He has basically destroyed my confidence in my home. I am currently in the process of gathering estimates to correct 10s of thousands of dollars of poor workmanship that does not follow accepted trade practices. Had a window consultant, a licenced glazing and general building contractor out to look at the windows. Result? All windows need pulled out, framing fixed, and reinstalled correctly. SJB also installed a window in my son's bedroom that violates fire egress code. The window only opens 18". Minimum is 20". So I need a new window there now. I have told Steve about the windows. He is ignoring me. Steve's only response to my concerns was to ask for more money, for me to sign a gag order so that I cannot review him, and to exempt him from any liability. Not. a. chance. I have attached pictures of Steve's attempt to ask me for more money and to relinquish all of my rights. Is this why I have posted the first bad review? Have others signed their rights away to make Steve go away? Not me. Steve claims I am grading "unfinished work". Tile, floors, and windows are straightened out later at the end of project? Right. So he was going to pull baseboards off and pull the planks out of the drywall? Then put the baseboards back on? He was going to magically correct the tile work? He was going to correct the window framing with the windows completely installed and all finishes complete? Makes sense. If you are reading this and had SJB do any work at your home in the past, I HIGHLY recommend inspecting the work. Also - often he said he is doing work for "free" or "part of the project". Be careful.

That went well so this year we asked them to do our second bathroom remodel. So each time we had a project that needed to be done we had a couple different bids just to see what options there are and always went back to New Life because, even though they are not the cheapest, they had the best ideas and were willing to work with us more than the other places seemed to. Richard, the founder, has great ideas. My husband and I have a rough idea of what we want but Richard's suggestions for all three of our projects helped us consider more possibilities which I really appreciate. We also enjoyed working with Junior who was the lead on our bathroom projects. He is easy to work with, communicates well, and was patient with our many questions and requests. He also had some great ideas for our bathroom that we wouldn't have thought of but enhanced the remodel. What other contractors were not willing to do, such as our pocket door for our bathroom, Junior worked out a solution to make it possible. Even if problems arose, he helped things move forward as smoothly as possible. Everyone who worked on the project was professional and pleasant to work with. In 2023 we hired M.C. Brown construction to build out a full remodel of our kitchen in our 1958…read moreranch house. We wanted to create a space that was fully upgraded but at the same time felt like it had always been there. We were beyond impressed with their craftsmanship and continue to marvel at our dream kitchen every day. Nick is excellent to work with, and definitely took any concerns we had to heart--for example we weren't quite satisfied with the first attempt at color matching our hardwood floors, and Nick worked with his flooring team to correct the issue all while being professional and understanding. Their whole team was excellent--kind, professional and respectful of us and our space and they really care about details. It is so refreshing to see they prioritize their craft in every part of the job--they really strive to do things right. Very high integrity crew. The other thing to note is cleanliness. They are absolute pros. During our renovation Nick's team cleaned the site before leaving each day, and they take every precaution to manage dust and minimize disturbance in other parts of our home. Even midway through demolition I was always impressed to walk into the house, see their progress and note how clean they make such a messy job look! I absolutely recommend working with M.C. Brown if you prioritize craftsmanship, attention to detail and peace of mind. The entire project journey from project estimates to final touch up was a breeze. I contracted with Marrokal for an outdoor living area remodel. I am a business owner and have done…read moremany commercial buildouts with contractors. I have also done a number of home remodels as a 30 year homeowner. I am reasonable in my expectations on what to expect from construction and understand the challenges with construction. I know that not everything goes perfect and certain issues will happen on any construction project. However, the issues on this project were extensive and beyond reason. The subs they use are of very poor quality with poor oversight by Marrokal to ensure quality. Poor workmanship, poor quality control to address the workmanship, lack of integrity with contracted issues and all led to a poor overall experience and caused me to expend tremendous time and energy in order to achieve a good finished product and avoid being overcharged. Nearly every trade had significant issues with workmanship. The Concrete had a hump throughout the slab that required a week of grinding to allow tile installation and did not allow sufficient weep screed height. The Electrician had to cut out structural joists to install speakers because they cut two of the holes in the wrong place. The stucco had over 60 cracks throughout requiring elastomeric paint due to failure to use a crack isolation membrane which I learned should have been used for the matching smooth stucco finish. The framer did a poor job framing for the fireplace requiring modification. The fireplace installation was poorly done with insufficient vent height leading to 8 months of delay at project end to remedy the issue. Poor finish carpentry work was done by the project manager and should have been done by a finish carpenter. While this was primarily an exterior project, three windows were installed. The interior was left unfinished for a number of months to do simple molding and drywall work which was only 1-2 days of work and could have been done much sooner requiring us to have our kitchen and master bedroom a mess throughout the project. In addition to the workmanship and quality control issues there were major issues with the finance/contract issues on this project. My budget was not even close to adhered to in the planning phase with no transparency until an excessive price was given to me with no supporting detail or breakdown of how it was arrived at. After a lot of back and forth and once the contract was agreed to, there were multiple issues with attempts to charge me more despite a contracted price that covered those items. This included attempts to charge me more for electrical for heaters that was covered under the contract, attempts to charge more for deck pricing after we already signed a change order contract for deck changes, attempt to do chain link fence rather than stucco around back of deck despite renderings and contract/plans that showed a stucco wrapped deck. Ultimately, Marrokal agreed to resolve each of my requests as I was in the right but it took a lot of time, energy and debate with management to get to the result. We are extremely happy with the end result and they designed a nice layout but there was a lot of pain to get to completion.

What stood out was how much they actually cared. We'd text dumb questions at 8pm and still get a real answer. When we flipped the kitchen layout halfway through (sorry guys), they didn't make us feel bad about it. The 400 square foot addition ties into the existing house so cleanly you genuinely can't tell where the old stops and the new starts. They showed up when they said they would. Site was clean at the end of every day, which sounds small until you've lived through a remodel. The subs they brought in were solid. Lucy in the office kept us looped in on scheduling and payments so nothing ever caught us off guard. Construction stuff still came up, of course. A plumbing issue behind a wall, a backordered window. But every time, it was a conversation and a fix, not a fight over who was paying. Isaac wasn't the cheapest of the three bids we got. He was the only one who walked us through the scope line by line so we actually understood what we were paying for. No surprise charges at the end, which I hear is rare.
