This company was stellar throughout the whole process -- From the time we initially met with Jonathan at the home and garden show, to the planning/designing of the project and closeout with Jonathan and Pat, to meeting our PM Kevin and the various trades for the job, and to the welcoming and friendly Marrokal staff. These folks are definite pros and would recommend them to folks looking for home remodeling. Any questions and concerns we had before and during the project were answered and addressed promptly. We were kept apprised of any schedule changes and items that would have needed a change request was provided to us in a reasonable time. I contracted with Marrokal for an outdoor living area remodel. I am a business owner and have done many commercial buildouts with contractors. I have also done a number of home remodels as a 30 year homeowner. I am reasonable in my expectations on what to expect from construction and understand the challenges with construction. I know that not everything goes perfect and certain issues will happen on any construction project. However, the issues on this project were extensive and beyond reason. The subs they use are of very poor quality with poor oversight by Marrokal to ensure quality. Poor workmanship, poor quality control to address the workmanship, lack of integrity with contracted issues and all led to a poor overall experience and caused me to expend tremendous time and energy in order to achieve a good finished product and avoid being overcharged. Nearly every trade had significant issues with workmanship. The Concrete had a hump throughout the slab that required a week of grinding to allow tile installation and did not allow sufficient weep screed height. The Electrician had to cut out structural joists to install speakers because they cut two of the holes in the wrong place. The stucco had over 60 cracks throughout requiring elastomeric paint due to failure to use a crack isolation membrane which I learned should have been used for the matching smooth stucco finish. The framer did a poor job framing for the fireplace requiring modification. The fireplace installation was poorly done with insufficient vent height leading to 8 months of delay at project end to remedy the issue. Poor finish carpentry work was done by the project manager and should have been done by a finish carpenter. While this was primarily an exterior project, three windows were installed. The interior was left unfinished for a number of months to do simple molding and drywall work which was only 1-2 days of work and could have been done much sooner requiring us to have our kitchen and master bedroom a mess throughout the project. In addition to the workmanship and quality control issues there were major issues with the finance/contract issues on this project. My budget was not even close to adhered to in the planning phase with no transparency until an excessive price was given to me with no supporting detail or breakdown of how it was arrived at. After a lot of back and forth and once the contract was agreed to, there were multiple issues with attempts to charge me more despite a contracted price that covered those items. This included attempts to charge me more for electrical for heaters that was covered under the contract, attempts to charge more for deck pricing after we already signed a change order contract for deck changes, attempt to do chain link fence rather than stucco around back of deck despite renderings and contract/plans that showed a stucco wrapped deck. Ultimately, Marrokal agreed to resolve each of my requests as I was in the right but it took a lot of time, energy and debate with management to get to the result. We are extremely happy with the end result and they designed a nice layout but there was a lot of pain to get to completion. read more

1 Star - Marrokal Quoted Us $280K and 6 Months. Instead We Got a Beautiful Prefab Kitchen & Upstairs Remodel in 5 Weeks for $100K. In 2025, we reached out to Marrokal Construction for a remodel that included a 400 sq. ft. kitchen and new flooring across 1,500 sq. ft. of our home, including the upstairs. We made it very clear up front: we were working with a firm, cash-only budget, and were not open to financing. Marrokal gave us a verbal estimate of $175,000, and assured us that our budget would be respected. Based on that, we paid a $4,000 design fee to begin the process. After the initial design phase, we were told the estimate had increased by $30,000-$50,000, and were asked for another $6,000 to continue. When the final bid came back, it was $280,000, with an expected construction timeline of 6 months. This final estimate did not include the small quarter-bath renovation, which we had discussed early on and were previously told could cost around $15,000--a number we found personally hard to justify. Additionally, during multiple conversations, the Marrokal sales representative repeatedly brought up financing options, despite our firm stance against borrowing. We later received refinance and HELOC marketing materials by mail. While that could have been a coincidence, it added to our discomfort with how the process was evolving. At that point, we chose to walk away, and Merrokal refused to refund any of our design fees. Instead, we worked with Prefab Granite Depot in Kearny Mesa, who: * Delivered a beautiful kitchen that feels custom despite being prefab * Completed a full upstairs remodel, including flooring and the quarter-bath * Finished the project in 5 weeks * Charged us $100,000 all-in, including $58,000 for kitchen demo, cabinets, and installation The rest of the budget covered flooring, paint, appliances, hardware, and the quarter-bath renovation--all delivered with clear pricing and no surprises. To be clear, Marrokal's design team was professional, and their renderings were well-executed. For homeowners looking for high-end, heirloom-quality cabinetry and who are comfortable with a flexible budget and extended timeline, they may be a good fit. But for homeowners like us--who prioritize timeline, transparency, and cost control--the experience did not align with our expectations. We felt the project was structured in a way that gradually escalated commitment before presenting the full price, with little flexibility once payments had been made. If you're considering a remodel, we strongly recommend exploring reputable prefab options first. In our case, it saved us $180,000, months of waiting, and a lot of unnecessary stress. read more

Ladies, watch out for the President of the company and the Operational Manager of this company. On the week of Labor Day of last year, the president of the company demanded payment for $29,500 for the drop shipment of drywall. When I screenshot him that the contract that states "IT IS AGAINST THE LAW FOR THE CONTRACTOR TO COLLECT PAYMENT FOR THE WORK NOT YET COMPLETED, OR FOR MATERIALS NOT YET DELIVERED. HOWEVER, A CONTRACTOR MAY REQUIRE A DOWNPAYMENT."; he called my husband at his work to get me to pay. I am not going to pay $29,500 for the dropping drywall in the garage and bedroom addition. I will pay $2950 for the materials. Until the work is done, I will pay the full amount. My young project manager was sent all over the county of San Diego. RSF, South Bay, San Diego State, instead of being onsite when the City of Poway inspectors came to check off. I communicated my frustrations effectively at a meeting on 8/14/22 with (Operational project manager, Project Manager, Director of Operation, husband, and neighbor as recorder) about the extension of deadlines, no communication from PM about timelines, truss issues, timelines were given but extended. This "easy" project was suppose to be done in 6 months, instead it was completed in 18 months. If they had told me if was going to take a year, I would have been patience. The young PM blamed it on the City inspector. I went down to the City Planning+Engineering+Permit office and checked out the story. He said that there were no one there to help him. I went there, and 3 people came to help me. I asked the City Inspector Oscar Herrera, is this true? Oscar gave me a different story. Oscar said he drove up and down the street looking for Marrokal truck. Another lie. On the initial timeline, the project was to be completed by Labor Day. Labor Day came, and Marrokal was behind. The director of Marrokal Business Operation said," To stack the subcontractors" The subcontractors would come and do different things at the same time. Yes, they stacked the subs; yet the timeline got extended to 11/16/22. Thanksgiving came and went. The 227sf 3 bedrooms add-on and third car garage were not completed. 3 piles of trash were left in the 3 bedrooms for 3 months. Not until I had written a letter asking the PM to clean the site with dust, nails, drywall, demolition. I cited on the contract that the site needs to be clean daily. The roofer was smoking while he was installing the black tar paper. It wasn't like he took a break and smoke. He would staple and smoke, staple, smoke, staple, smoke. When I confronted the owner of roofer to get down, he said he wasn't smoking. I yelled at the top of my voice "to get down from my roof". The roofer was on the top of the roof. He came down. He told me he wasn't smoking. Yes, he wasn't smoking, but his African American worker was smoking. Both my neighbor and I saw him. So I had all my neighbor's RING cameras pointed on my roof. I communicate to my young PM, this is fire season. There were 3 fires on Twin Peaks, Metate, and nearby Rancho Bernardo. My house is worth 1.2 millions prior to construction. If the house burn down, Marrokal will pay for the damages. Not only did the President of the company demanded $29,500 payment of drywall, the manager of the Project Managers use his big large 6' 3", 300# size to intimidate me at a wall that I paid $5425. He wanted to rip it out since I was not happy with the wall. I yelled back at the top of lung, "NO, you cannot rip my wall out. I paid for this wall." I cried over the frustration of extended delay, bullying, and demand of payment. My neighbor who came as a recorder/eye witness said by the words he used "intimidation" and "needling me to break down". He was "aggressive" towards me. Some inflated prices of 4 brass floor plugs were quoted as $300 apiece, became $3318. The price of wood went up, I paid $16879. Marrokal "abandon" from 5/2/22 to 7/8/22, no show. The signage was taken down. Neighbors of Poway Upperwindmill asked what happen. I didn't know. They didn't communicate with me. Other contractors were willing to come and help me. I said, "No, I wanted to finish with Marrokal." After all dust has settled, we closed on 3/1/23. Marrokal gave me a credit of $350 for the wall that I was intimidated, bullied, and cried, I didn't want their money; I wanted them to get out of my hair. Recently, I found out that the president of the company asked my husband of 33 years if I was "mentally ill". This is name calling in my book. I am a highly education Asian woman with a bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from UCI, master of EECS from UCSD, UCCE Master Gardener and Master Composter. I paid this company $1000 per sf. This is the kind of rick-a-row that I had to deal with. Pressure of payment by the President of the Company. I never had to deal with this in 2005 when I did a kitchen remodel. read more

Yelpers, here's a key point to consider in choosing your home remodel company. California law requires contractors to guarantee their work for 1-year. Marrokal guarantees their work for life! Case and point. Wife & I have been in our remodeled home 14 months. The farmhouse style kitchen sink had slightly settled leaving a small gap between top of sink and granite countertop. I simply Emailed a service request to Marrokal POC. Within 24 hours I received phone call from Marrokal project manager to organize date & time for service. Marrokal coordinated to have manufacturer of kitchen cabinets, Imperial Custom Cabinets (separate review) onsite. Imperial technician Dave arrived at appointed time. Dave took care and time to diagnose issue. Dave stated they've installed countless sinks of this type and never had one settle. After much inspection Dave found the cause. Our sink was not flat underneath all sides. For whatever reason sink had two small feet underneath front edge of sink. This causes majority of sink weight to rest on these pressure points instead of weight being distributed equally. Dave arrived onsite with all required power tools and supplies for repair. He manufactured from maple wood matching interior of cabinet a brace to support middle of sink. Wah-law, problem solved with still great appearance. Marrokal project manager Kevin was onsite to apply new grout filling space between sink and granite countertop. Everything looks good as new! Before and after photos attached. We are getting bids for our kitchen remodel. We recently met with Steve from Marrokal and while we did not choose Marrokal Design, it was only because of the negative reviews here. I think I might regret it. First the word of mouth in my neighborhood of Scripps Ranch is extremely positive on both Marrokal's work and Steve as a designer and architect. Steve came to our hose, exactly on time and prepared. Steve is a true professional! He's someone who just comes across as honest and trustworthy and his designs have a very good reputation. I spoke to Steve about the reviews and he answered all my questions. Then I looked deeper into the people who wrote the reviews and saw this was not their first negative review. Currently we have been struggling with the designer we selected to get beyond a basic kitchen design. The total bids are about the same. Marrokal seemed slightly higher but they included all appliances. We will have one more meeting with The other company and if they can't design a nice kitchen we will be going back to Marrokal! read more

We chose Marrokal D and R over others because of price and we liked the design they come up with the best. I feel we were very fortunate to get the Project Manager that we did in Ryan. Ryan is very knowledgeable and made us feel like he was there for all of our needs. He saved us some money here and there and 95% of the project was finished within a couple weeks of the projected finish date. When you go with an all in one design and remodel, your project goes only as well as the Project Manager runs it. I would definitely ask for Ryan Firestine to do your project, if you choose to go with Marrokal. Also, Jensen was great for us as she was able to pickup on our style and what looked good. I'm still very pleased with my home. Support for keeping it super has been given by Holly. She provides me with people to call for additional services like changing a waterline filter. I'm also very pleased with how the handled a warranty issue with my home. I had a water leak due to a stucco staple. The leak was repaired and the stucco redone on the area so you would never know anything happened. All this was done in a very timely manner. read more

Marrokal has been remodeling my next door neighbors house for over a year. Recently my neighbors house was re-stuccoed and the works were sloppy and splashed stucco on to my house and property which has since dried. The stucco has also logged its way into the air intake vents on my new air conditioner.. They also were chunks of concrete / chicken wire scattered on my property. I called Marrokal and they gave me the name of the Construction Manager on a Friday. I called "John" and he promised me he would come by on Monday to take a look and take care of it. It's been a week I've heard nothing... I realize that the stucco company was a sub contractor, but still if you promise to take care of this, I expect you to deliver on your promised. If you want to hire a company that breaks promises and hires sloppy subcontractors, Marrokal is the company for you! Next stop the BBB / my attorney.. read more

I was told they would call me back. I had a design consultant come out and give me an estimate for a room addition. When I said I would rather do my yard he never called me back. The main office called to follow-up and I told them I was disappointed, never got another call. Very bad...I was disappointed. I am surprised by these negative reviews I see here. I just had Marrokal complete a fire pit remodel of my back patio and they did a beautiful job! I don't think they bid their services out, as far as I saw they did all of the work from in-house services, which is way better than contracting out! I worked with Steven Mark as my designer and he was with me through the entire process and everything with us went through without a hitch! I recommend them to everybody! Get ready to shell out a lot of money if you sign up with Marrokal Design. The initial verbal estimates for my remodel projects did not seem too pricey. Then they get you to pay them $5000.00 just to get crappy preliminary designs showing you a range of prices depending on the number of projects you would like to do and the materials that you want to use. They claim that the more you spend with them the less expensive it will cost due to "economy of scale." After getting an estimate for a variety of projects including hardwood floors, built in entertainment center, bath to shower conversion, etc., the cost was unreasonable based on other estimates from smaller shops. A shower conversion was estimated at over $30000.00. I eventually went with a local contractor (MOST Construction) that did a beautiful bath to shower custom conversion for $13000.00. My hardwood floors were installed by a local flooring company (Unique Flooring) for about 2/3 of Marrokal's quote. I had a cabinet designer and maker build and install a custom entertainment center for 1/3 of the cost for a Marrokal designed entertainment center. If you want to pay high prices stick with Marrokal. If you want to save money, do your homework and keep looking (which is what I should have done in the first place). There are plenty of contractors, builders and designers out there that do quality work for less. I'm out $5000. But overall, I'm ahead after deciding not to go with Marrokal. read more

Marrikal Design Several months ago we completed a project with Marrikal Design, we had some problems. Initially we met with a designer, Chris to design a pergola and a small front patio at a cost of $3500 which I paid failing to realize that the design and drawings did not belong to me unless I signed on to the project. But I signed on for $55,000. When I wanted to see the detail on the line items I was refused stating it was proprietary. I was given the detailed drawings and computer renderings that were indeed impressive. Chris detailed how the work was going to be done and who was going to be in charge as a project manager, Jeff. A six page contract in small font was given and signed by me. The work started and I was initially very impressed. After I paid the time table draws and the bulk of the funds were paid the project went to a standstill and the quality of the materials deteriorated. The pergola had beam 6 X 10 that had multiple holes where knots had been as well as multiple gouges. When I complained I was told that he could patch it up with Bondo, knowing that the patchwork would eventually fall out I insisted that the beam be replaced. Jeff dragged it out but by then it was painted. Eventually the beam was replaced but they wanted me to pay the painter again. Unknown to me Jeff said that the wood to be used on my project was construction grade as buried in the contract. When I looked further into it I was dismayed by the content buried in the small print. Nothing seen in the impressive design center, the computer printouts, the drawings or verbiage matters unless it is specified in the contract. BEWARE Chris specifically told me that they would never come back for more money if a subcontractor ran into trouble but that was exactly what he did. He handed me a bill for $480 because a tree removal had bigger roots than expected. I wanted to see the line item but he refused and didn't pursue the bill that is when I learned that the items that have an allowance means the sky is the limit. He explained to me that an estimate is different than an allowance. BEWARE The project dragged out for several months with a workman showing up about every two weeks spending about 90 minutes doing something. I I have never dealt with other high end contractors but I would expect some pride in workmanship since they are very expensive. I would advise any prospective customer to spend more time on the contract than with the design people because it doesn't matter what they draw, or computerize or say if it isn't in the contract you're not getting it. Educate yourselves to know the difference between construction grade lumber and higher grades. I didn't know. You can be sure that the samples in their design center are not construction grade. read more

This review is regarding Steve Walton and the remodel job he did for us 3 years ago while working with a different company. He worked with Marrokal Design and Remodeling for about 14 years, then went to work with a different company and now he is back with Marrokal as the director of the custom home division. Steve is the utmost professional and very easy to work with. He helped us achieve an amazing outdoor space that we use daily and is enjoyed by the many guests we entertain. The project won several awards; including the Gold Award with Qualified Remodeler and Remodeling Magazine for best out door living space. Before the project began, we met with Steve several times to fine tune what we were looking for. Once our needs were determined, he and his team measured the property and presented us with three different designs. We melded the 3 designs into what we have today which consists of: out door living, dining, kitchen and bathroom along with 2 fireplaces and an extended balcony. He is a perfectionist and it shows in everything he does. This was more than a remodel or a simple addition to the backyard. It truly was a transformation, which enabled us to extend our living space so we can enjoy the outdoors comfortably with music, lights, heaters and fans. There's not a thing we would have changed or wished we would have done differently. We selected Marrokal to create an indoor/outdoor living space. They used La Cantina doors to open our home to a new outdoor living room and dining room, complete with pool, hot tub, built-in BBQ and fire pit sitting area. Our two bathrooms were also completely remodeled. We could not be happier with the improvements they made to our home! We now feel like we live at a resort. Ian Nanson, the project manager was a joy to work with. He kept the project on schedule and was a creative problem solver. Jensen Landers was also great to work with. Marrokal far exceeded my expectations by leaps and bounds. The professionalism and workmanship were over the the top. My wife is very satisfied and joyfully happy and she is the OCD one and tends to notice minor perfections. I have been in the Active Army for 24 years and we built our organization on trust and Marrokal Design and Remodeling have earned my trust! Marrokal installed new green wall, a walk in shower, toilet, vanity, pocket door and floor in our main bathroom. Marrokal installed grab bars that fold up out of the way when company comes over then folds down for my wife's mom to use daily. Marrokal demolished the old bathroom the first day and was able to put our bathroom back together in five days which had a minimum impact on our daily life. I talked with Allister (Design Consultant) to give hime an ideal of what I was preparing to do: kitchen remodeling. We talked briefly about my project budget how much appliance costs, countertops, cabinets, etc. It appears to me that after I mentioned my project budget, he "conveniently" had a meeting to go attend, but he would call me to get more details. My review is limited from the seminar I attended up until our consultation with Alicia Readler (Design Consultant) and my brief conversation with John Ryan (Director of Design). I highly recommend anyone to discuss their projects with Alicia or John! I met them during the Total Home Remodel seminar at the Marrokal Design Center and they were really great. Over the course of several weeks, we interviewed 4 different Design/Build firms of similar caliber but ultimately we did not select Marrokal. I am highly confident that Marrokal would have been fine to work with but we selected a company that had a better overall fit for our family. read more

We had Marrokal do a whole house remodel. I was a little skeptical since they must be spending a lot of money on marketing but I am a huge fan! We got: Beautiful design Outstanding project management (one call and things were taken care of ASAP. And I am high maintenance.) Project was completed a day before schedule (6 months from demo to move in for a 2300 sq ft house) No back and forth between the architect and builder - they were both so in the two cases where additional money needed to be spent to fix something that wasn't on the plan that was structural, Marrokal took care of it themselves. Really great quality - they have high standards with their subs and if something looked wonky they addressed it. As with any construction project, the more you know before you get started the better. If you pick your materials ahead of time before the contract is drawn up, you will not only have a fast construction process but you'll know very closely what your actual budget will be. Also, go over the plans with a microscope and figure out your lighting and electrical, doors, etc before plans are finalized. Yes, their insurance company came to her home twice since her security bars pulled right out due to stupid installation by incompetent installer, just to save Marakol $1,000. They charged her $400,000 for remodel. We never heard another word from their insurance company but Mr. Marakol's attorney wrote us a letter denying all responsibility. Whose fault was it that this was not done right and then not checked over at completion? My mother believed that she was safely nestled in her home and she was not. Furthermore, in this letter, their attorney threatened to sue us if we said anything on YELP about it! I wrote Mr Marakol a letter and probably dropped a 4 letter word or two on him and what does he do? He mails the letter to my mother. Come on! A really mature, ethical and honest man NOT!!!!! read more

My husband and I live in Northern California but own a condo in San Diego. In January we attended a home show at the convention center looking for ideas to redo our condo kitchen. We stopped at the Marrokal booth and talked to the rep, who seemed interested in our job. We made an appointment with him, to see our kitchen, a day or two later. He arrived in a timely fashion and spent about an hour talking to us. He indicated he would meet with us at Marrokal's design center the next time we came down and provide us with options for our remodel. We set a date and time for the next meeting, which was reiterated several times. We arrived at the Marrokal Design Center at the date and time agreed on only to find the rep we talked to was not in the office at that time and apparently had done nothing about preparing any options. Needless to say that doesn't present Marrokal in a very good light. read more

Had them do a large project. The design was nice. Every other aspect of the job was poorly done. There were countless delays, cost over runs and just poor service overall. Even when we tried to escalate the issues to management we got no real responses. Wish we could say something nice. Do not like writing reviews like this. read more

I was anticipating an awesome experience working with Marrokal Design. After meeting 4 times with the architect and giving them $3,500, we were thoroughly disappointed in the designs as they did not take into consideration the majority of what we requested and were way over the budget we had requested. We chose a different contractor - Lars - and are thrilled as we have moved back into our "dream house" and love it!! read more

I LOVE THIS COMPANY! We had a major remodel, we live in North Park and my house was built in 1929. My house has all the modern conveniences, like dual-pane windows and insulation but still looks true to the period it was built. We lived in the house during the remodel...that was rough but we knew what we signed up for when we started. Everything was done stucco, new bathroom, refinish floors, brand new windows and window trim, brand new bathroom, roof, getting rid of hot water heater, new front entrance walkway, paint, stain, new mouldings and trim..... Did we run into overages? sure it is an 85+ year old house. Luckily they found some wood rot issues and other items that could have been devastating and expensive in a couple of years. Were there snafu's...sure it is construction with a lot of workers trying to get into the same space at the same time. However any problem or issue that arose was taken care of to our satisfaction and done quickly! John Simko spot on for our job. I couldn't say enough great things about this guy! He kicks butt and works hard to make things right! The other person I need to mention is John the MASTER CRAFTSMAN wood worker. The mouldings and trim that he did for windows, door etc. was AMAZING. Once the project was completed they made a donation on our behalf to a charity of my choice. The charity called to personally thank me for the generous donation. The construction part of the project lasted approximately 11 months. It has been about a year and I am seriously considering hiring them once again to remodel the bathroom that was not remodeled and do some detail work in the kitchen....call me crazy, but that is how much I liked this company! read more

We were very happy with our downstairs remodel in 2011. What prompted me to write now is the extraordinary service we just received. A few days ago I spoke with Craig Speicher at Marrokal. Even though I was well outside the warranty period, Craig volunteered to look at my pull out garbage/recycling cabinet where the sliders were no longer working properly. He then offered to do the install for free if I paid the cost of new sliders. I was pleased. He contacted Art at Imperial Custom Cabinets who said "no charge" for the new sliders. Craig then installed them today. So, I have my gorgeous kitchen back in working order and all for free. Craig could not have been nicer or more professional.
