Come, enjoy by hanging a sip of non spirits along with a tumbler later on. If I were in my twenties again, I would be a Jefe every week. Live music, a slot of fun and an ambiance that will set you at ease. How do you unwind, spend in evening with Gnarly Sacs, Ivy Wilkinson and others.

One of old Austin's original live music hotspots. Great service and friendly crowd. Their kitchen was not open, but we enjoyed the live music venue. Great amount of parking within walking distance (garages, paytopark) or bus stops. There's more room and stages inside than expected.

A cute and fun venue that is appropriately named. Decent bar service and loved the little photo booth. Would definitely come back if I'm in Austin again.

We went to Hole in the Wall before going to a show at Mohawk. The bartender, Darrell, is so freaking cool. He's our friend now, whether he knows it or not. Hole in the Wall has never been busy the few times we've been. It's one of the coolest spots to stop in for a pre-show drink. Highly recommend saying hi and talking to Darrell!

    Great dive bar.

Great dive bar. And when I say dive it is just that. Cheap beer and questionable cocktails. Awesome music and a weird vibe. One of the last great bars in Austin.

My first review was to gate keep this place. Great music. Shit drinks. Cool bartenders. Everything you could need from a hometown-run down bar.

Ok this place is the best!! Some of the best live music in ATX! If I lived here it would be my regular spot. Great layout with two rooms. Amazingly friendly staff who genuinely welcome you into their home that is Hope in the Wall! Drinks are cheap and good. Awesome beer selection. Perfection.

Good dive bar. Always a live show going on during weekdays plus karaoke on weekends. Check in advance whos playing and if theres a cover. The bar is pretty big and has 4 main areas. There are two bars in the front each with a stage. Then there is an outdoor patio and a bar in the back. The bars in the front have a better selection of drinks. The patio is the best place to have a conversation. Usually theyll have karaoke and a band going on simultaneously. In terms of food, buffalo cauliflower and burgers are good. Its pretty standard bar food though. They have good week night specials in terms of drinks.

Ask the Community - Hole in the Wall

    Is it kid friendly?

Hi Jake! We're 21+ after 9pm each night. Folks under 21 (and especially children who are with their parents) are welcome to watch our daytime shows, which take place generally from 7 or 8–9pm each day. Sometimes, we have all-ages or 18+ shows after…

Just had a very vivid memory of hanging out here circa 2005 and I have to ask ... does the women's bathroom still have two toilets right next to each other with nothing between them?

Yes it does. It also has ever-changing graffiti walls inside there. Jimmy Fallon took photos in there for his recent show at UT.

You walk in and immediately know you are not in some polished Instagram cocktail lounge. It is loud, a little gritty, and full of people who are clearly there to have a good time and not pretend otherwise. The beer is cold, the Lone Star flows like Texas water, and the vibe is pure old school Austin. And yes, the legendary bathroom situation deserves its own paragraph. The men's room features a giant ice filled trough for a urinal, which feels like something out of a 1970s roadside saloon documentary. Somehow it is both ridiculous and perfectly on brand. It actually becomes a conversation starter because you walk out laughing and immediately tell your friends they have to see it and go pee. The crowd was friendly, the bartenders were quick with the beers, and nobody was taking themselves too seriously. I ended up staying longer than planned, drinking Lone Stars and talking to random people like we had known each other for years. If you want craft cocktails served with a rosemary sprig this is not your place. If you want a hilarious, slightly chaotic, authentically divey night in Austin with cheap beer and great stories, Dirty Bill's absolutely delivers. Five stars and I would go back in a heartbeat.

One thing I especially appreciate is how much effort they put into the themed décor during Christmas and Halloween. This is a great place to bring your own darts or pool cue and since there are two dartboards and a pool table here. There's plenty of four top tables, seating at the bar or five booths to sit at. There's also an outdoor seating area that allows smoking. If you are hungry, they do have a food truck out back that serves up tacos, ramen, nachos, etc. On our visit, the truck was not open after 4:30pm. As a result, we just had one beer and left. Plain old bar. No reason not to go there. But no reason to go there either. Perfectly adequate for what it is offering. If it was nearby, why not? * * * Minor notes. a) Even though this place is right on top of campus, I noticed almost no undergraduates the Friday night I was there. There were a bunch of elderly and middle-aged Longhorn golf club types and a handful of Cherry Creek Coffeehouse style graduate students either out on dates or working on some project. Maybe the undergrads were in their dorms or sororities doing the pre-parties for the eventual march on Sixth Street. The Crown and Anchor is not the place you would want to wear your slinky black cocktail dress. So if a black cocktail dress is in your plan, you would rose-all-the-way with your friends in your room, then change over and head downtown. b) The Crown and Anchor is across the street from a beautiful lush strand of trees north of campus. The church tower from the Seminary can be seen in the middle distance. This ought to be one of the best views in Austin. Except that UT has plunked a maintenance shed in front of all this. So you spend your time looking at a grungy trailer-like thing where they give maintenance guys their schedules and keep stashes of outdoor equipment and repair supplies. This is not where you want to go to look at the sunset. Turn your back to all that and watch the game.
