Walking into Deep Eddy's is like going back in time... an old school dive bar where you can get a cheap drink, play some pool, and spark up a conversation with a stranger at the bar. It's a surprising but unassuming melting pot of Austinites of every stripe that's open 7 days a week, rain or shine, and most (if not all) holidays. No frills. No nonsense. They take happy hour very seriously with their Mon-Thurs 12-1 (??) and 7-8 options. The beer is cold and comes in mugs, mini-pitchers, and pitcher-pitchers -- and all for the cheapest price in Austin. They also have liquor and mixers ...and technically wine (if you dare) but I don't know that anyone's ordered wine here in the last 50 years. I'm tempted to ask just for giggles but risk, of course, being thrown out by one of their friendliest or surliest bartenders. It really is a choose your own adventure type of place. read more

The King of Neighborhood Dive Bars (and that's an absolute compliment)! Deep Eddy Cabaret is a family-owned business that's been around since 1950 or so. I've gotta sidestep and mention that it reminds me of a favorite dive bar in Pittsburgh where I'm originally from. We like to visit after a day at Deep Eddy Pool and lunch at Pool Burger. We end our day here with Shiner drafts served in perfectly frosted beer mugs. This old-school joint attracts patrons of all ages (21+) and backgrounds. Neighborhood regulars, folks from across town (like us), and tourists. It's that place where you pick up conversation with total strangers and feel like you've made lifelong friends even if you never see them again. The bartenders are great. They actually take the time to chat, ask about your day, what you've done up to that point in the day, etc. The bar is embodied in the kitschy decor you'd expect to find at this type of watering hole. Lots of cool things for the human eye to take in. The prices are insanely affordable. $4 for a Shiner draft! Though I've never actually made it, happy hour is Mon-Thurs 12-1 pm and 7-8 pm. I had a horrible experience with a female bartender who singled out my friend, who has CMT, for tripping over himself and denying him alcohol for the rest of the night despite him being sober. I talked to the bartender afterward to make her aware of the situation and she immediately disregarded me and said "its her job": her actions were unjust and judgmental. Maybe we should talk to our clients before coming to conclusions? Hopefully she learns something out of this. read more

I came here tonight 8/7/24 to get a drink w my boyfriend, the bartender asked for our ID And we showed our IDs to her. She starts mumbling saying "this isn't making me happy" honestly she seemed pretty drunk. She told me no she's not serving me. She thought my ID was fake. I'm 26 years old and manage a bar, I told her that and told her I'd show her proof and she refused. Never have I ever had that happen to me. I brought my out of town family to Deep eddy Cabaret for Dec 26th post-Christmas beverages. We were excited to get out of the house and away from the kids for a fun night out. We ended up at deep eddy and had the absolutely worst experience I've ever had at a bar. I'm so embarrassed I brought my family here. Both (female) bartenders were so rude to us. Every time we ordered a drink the one bartender rolled her eyes at us and when the other one took our order she barked at me: "it works better if you order all at once". The problem with that is that I DID a order all at once but she ran away as soon as I said the first drink!!! Additionally the guy bringing ice into the bar (wearing a Dave and buster Jean jacket) was super rude to my 62 year old dad (who was just trying to watch the football game). He seemed drunk but that's not an excuse! Also why would you be drunk at work?!? Since it was Christmas Eve the bar was not packed and we easily parked in the back by Deep Eddy pool. The bar appeared to have its regulars and everyone was watching the Cowgirls play against Seattle. The bartender was friendly and I ordered a Tito's with pineapple juice. No go on the pineapple juice so I subbed it for orange juice. My husband grabbed a few beers from what was available on draft. Honestly the beer selection is limited (they had natty light on draft). As my first time I can say without a doubt they are doing their absolutely best in monitoring people coming and out as well as making sure tables are well situated. When a friend recently had a birthday party here I was excited to celebrate her special day at this Austin staple that I had yet to experience. There are so many things to love about this place. Close to my heart this has a small town bar feel with bright signage, cold beer, juke box, oldish video games, sports on the TVs, pool tables and decor that proves they have not updated anytime recently. They are no longer cash only but I wouldn't doubt cash is appreciated. Another stand out about DEC is you can bring some foods and the fact if you want to stay away from downtown they are just across the highway on Lake Austin Blvd. The drinks: Full bar with one specialty drink listed that I could see. The beer selection is well rounded with ciders, domestic beers and some nice TX brews that are nicely priced. The "DEC Fancy Wine" List (yup they named this not me) consists of 5 wines and I went with the Block Nine Pinot Noir which I enjoyed along with a Topo Chico. Well finally after years of being in Austin, I was in the neighborhood and remembered Deep Eddy! I arrived at 3 or so with a friend of mine after a day of hiking on the trails. We weren't sure if they were going to be open but there was a sign on the door that said open 12-2am. Those are some real bar hours there. Great beer prices. They have a half a pitcher called a mini for 5.50 that is perfect for two people or one very thirsty one. They have a happy hour between 7 and 8 but their prices are great already. I liked the bathroom as far as bathrooms go. There is a lock on the door and even though it looks like you have to pay to get in there it is just for looks. The condiment machine looks quite interesting. And if you had a bad hair or thigh day, there is a full length mirror w/o lights so it is really a mystery on how you look.
