This is a gigantic building - I guess it used to be something else? A different hotel? Or it's just unusual for a Holiday Inn Express. It's easy to get to but there are pros and cons to that - as it's in a very popular area, with a college nearby, tons of restaurants with zero tables (all reserved, even in the middle of the week), and just a medium walk to the big Riverside mall and the famous Spokane falls, not to mention an events center where, apparently, a major concert was happening on the night of our stay (thus the sold out-ed-ness of everything, I guess?). Bummer about the crowdedness and the busyness. Very cool about the gorgeous hotel, the premium lobby with the most delicious lemonade water we have ever had, and free cookies, the comfy room with a sliding door onto the grass so we could easily walk the dog. Be warned that this hotel is so close to the hotel across the street that when we ordered out for dinner, the address showed up over there. read more

The outside of this hotel is so cute, like a ski lodge. We were only there for one night and got a room on the second floor with a balcony. We had views of the river. With only a short walk to the riverwalk, we were able to hoof it to dinner, coffee, and attractions. Loved being able to walk. Our room was spacious. Pillows and bed were comfortable. Room was dark and cool for sleeping. Everything was clean. Even had a towel folded on our pillow that looked like a teddy bear. So cute. Breakfast was the best free breakfast we've had on our trip. Bacon, scrambled eggs, real oatmeal, orange infused ice water. Staff was nice and helpful, for example, providing directions to get to riverwalk. Free parking. Great stop. read more

Comfortable stay @ Holiday Inn in Spokane-Downtown, WA. ! Although I have always appreciated my stays at Holiday Inn hotels, this one has more upscale features than most. This particular hotel has beautiful castle like architecture and more appealing common areas. Holiday Inn employees, as always, have been friendly and accommodating, and this time, checking in with Nissa, was no different. Our room had all of the usual amenities. The bed was very comfortable. Many lighting options. Free parking (which is a definite plus in this area). Uber is only about $12 from here to get to central downtown for the night out without worrying about parking fees and walking in the cold! Highly recommended. read more

Aesthetically pleasing hotel up in a hill. It looks like a building out of Bavaria and slightly like Hogwarts. It has a private parking lot that feels more secure than it should be given the location in downtown Spokane. I asked about the safety of bikes on car racks and they said they have a security person, but to be safe it is okay to take bikes to your room. It has friendly staff and a decent breakfast buffet. They even have cookies and milk in the evening until 9pm. The lobby/buffet area is spicy and has many different seating options. The room was nice, too. With some pet-friendly rooms and even some ground level, external door rooms directly leading to grass, this is a great stay for parents of fur babies. The shower water pressure is great. There are many device charging options in the room. We would stay here again. read more

Beautiful hotel from the inside out. I accepted a position for work 2 hours from where I live. We needed a place to stay while I worked and tried to find a place for my family to live. I'm so grateful for our stay here. The staff was the best I've ever experience. I wish I knew all of their names, but one in particular, Max Casto, deserves recognition for going above and beyond to accommodate our family. There was also a older gentleman when we were checking out that was very kind as well. This might sound weird, but I we have been stuck in hotels a lot lately and something always sucks. The bed is caved in, The ice machines are broken, the pool is ice cold, I could go on and on. Not here! Everything was working fine. The bed is beyond comfy with lots of pillows and blankets. They have a great spread for breakfast with a little bit of everything for everyone. They even have dairy free milks to choose from! You never see that. I highly recommend this hotel. It's close to everything and the staff and rooms can't be any better. read more

This hotel is very cool and unique. We were warmly welcomed by Max at the front desk. He took amazing care of us along with providing an upgrade to our room. He showed us some cool places to check out and ensured we were taken care of. The room was everything he promised and made our vacation start off on a good note! Three stars just because the cleanliness of the rooms was very lacking initially. I've stayed here on another occasion when this hotel was being renovated and had a good experience so I thought I would try it again to see the updated rooms. This location and setting is awesome. High up on a gorgeous rock near River Front Park, it's a stunning sight to drive up to and to see from. Even the bottom floor rooms have a good view of the city. The lobby is elegant. The staff are accommodating and understanding. Five stars for the staff hands down which is why this is a 3 star review and not a 1. We had two rooms, my parents in one, myself in the other. I have a dog and so IHG generally puts you in pet only rooms on the bottom floor. Not my favorite choice because the pet rooms aren't always super clean and sometimes smell. But I sort of get it because pets can be dirty ...? My parents room had not been fully cleaned. The person before us had a dog that had pooped on the carpet right by the sliding glass door and either the prior occupants had placed the bags of poop outside or housekeeping had done so and not taken them. There were at least 5 poop stains that were still fresh, rather large and we tried cleaning them just to see if they were just stains but no, they were definitely very new and smelly. The staff was super great and did what they could to get us into another room last minute. It ended up being a handicap room right by an exit door so it was pretty noisy for them. Our room also had dirty carpet, not fully vacuumed, dog hair and stuff under the bed. Everything else was very clean but for some reason the carpet just didn't get cleaned. The location of the room was perfect. There was a nice little yard that was easy to go to from the room with a neat view and nice grass. However it too was full of poop land mines. My dog absolutely loved it I just don't think I'll come back to IHG with a pet. I understand why the rooms might be little bit used but I also know people and kids have accidents in rooms and can be incredibly messy so I don't know why they would assume that if you have a pet you will be ok with a dirty room. I would prefer to not be forced stay in a pet only room and just use a regular room and pay a higher fee even. Spokane does tend to have dirtier hotels I find so this is not just specific to IHG... read more

Words will never be able to fully express how much we loved our stay at this hotel. I traveled with 6 young men from New Orleans to present to two schools and a church in the region. The entire staff made us feel at home. I especially want to thank Max from the front desk for going beyond the call of duty to make sure that we had an amazing stay. This exterior does not look like any Holiday Inn I've ever stayed at! Perched high on a massive rock giving you a nice sanctuary over the city. Quite impressive. Rooms are slightly dated but very clean and bedding to HI quality standards. Some first floor rooms have doors to outside. Balcony doors on higher floors do open. Breakfast was continental and included. Milk and cookies in lobby at night and light dinner service was also available. Small gym but clean and open. Love the lobby seating area! read more

Loved the place, the staff, the location (perched atop "the rock" and walking distance to Riverfront Park), the breakfast, the very comfy lobby/reading room with tons of information. Outside has been recently remodeled and we heard the inside is next. We had no trouble at all with the room, so I don't know what they will be redoing. We had a great view of Riverfront Park, and walked to it (after a very filling breakfast) the next day. Breakfast was not your traditional cold continental, but additionally featured bacon, sausage, hot biscuits and my favorite, a pancake machine. This machine made pancakes to order with a press of a button. I can see the attraction as it's not as messy as a waffle maker, but I still like waffles better... First the good stuff. The sweet lady manning the breakfast area was very efficient and helpful. The architecture of the building facade was unique and fun. We sat outside that night and enjoyed the sites and sounds of Spokane in the fabulous temperatures. No bar. The man that checked us in sunday evening was rude and disinterested in even being there. The front area is pretty with fire "pits" but we couldn't find anyone to flip the switch to turn it on. Our room was covered with dog hair (it is pet friendly). Typical Holiday Inn. You can tell they refurbished an older building. Only one elevator for guests with multi-level floors which created a wait to get on. No fans in the bathroom/shower for king suite. For the price, I expect the coffee service to be better. They keep using the standard sweet & low with cheap creamer packets in each room. For a government rate of $105/night, they could do better. I went down and got better cream and splenda from the kitchenette so no big deal. Very thin walls, ceilings and floors. I normally ask for top level and forgot this time so I suffered. I am an extremely light sleeper. As usual, when I forget to ask for top floor we get a late night heavy stomper above us. This guy went back and forth well after midnight and then he got up at the crack of dawn. What got my three stars was the ac unit. Climate control Nazi's have it so you cant go below 68 or above 72. We sweat liked hogs all night and no, we're not fat! Had to get up and crack the window . Toilet made an awful swooshing noise early in the morning as everyone started taking showers and water pressure varied. So annoying. Will not stay here again due to lack of noise control. Could do much better for the price. read more

Front desk help was wonderful, kind and accommodating. We checked in early since I wasn't paying attention to time and he got us in a room immediately -he put us in a room with a parking space right outside so my girl would have to limp so far. We only stayed one night but the staff was friendly and helpful. Room was sparkling clean and my little girl was happy. She loved the milk and cookies in the evening, she was thrilled the building looked like a castle, loved the subtle Halloween touches around the lobby and the staff helped her and showed concern about her broken foot. This is absolutely the noisiest hotel you will ever stay at. The walls are extremely thin. I could hear everything going on in the rooms to either side of mine. Worst was the couple in the room on one side (304) were having a heated argument and he was very loud and needed a foot in his ass. Jerk. The hotel itself is beautiful and the staff is very friendly and extremely helpful. Breakfast was delicious and fresh. With Tylenol PM, I would have no problem staying here again. read more

The front desk at Holiday Inn Express (Downtown Spokane) depending on who you get may be very rude... I only have one experience to compare with, but I didn't even get through the front doors nor would I at this point . So, on their website there is a tab for groups/events. It didn't say anything specific about details of the events they hold, so I called the front desk to inquire. First, the front desk lady was very rude and short. This was on August 30th, about 4:50pm. Second, she said they aren't set-up to hold group or events of any type. So either the tabs are misleading and shouldn't be there to direct people to believe there are "groups and events" or the front desk lady had no clue what she was speaking of. Regardless, I wouldn't suggest this place to anyone else, nor would I ever use it. read more

The staff at the hotel were pleasant, knowledgeable and helpful. We stayed on the ground floor, which had a door to the parking lot, as well as into the hotel. We were able to park right outside our room, which made our stay so easy, as we had our dog with us. The room was clean and roomy. The reception area was bright and inviting. This place is an extraordinary bargain. I was charged $107 with tax in December. There were very nice Christmas decorations in the beautiful front entry with soaring ceilings and extensive woodwork. The breakfast was pretty good served in a modernized area. Hung the do not disturb sign on the door and house keeping knocked loudly 5 times between 9:45 am and 10:15 am and then started aggressively cleaning a room near by. I like this place when I stay in Spokane - the view is lovely, the location is downtown adjacent and the staff are friendly. The amenities are as you would expect for an HI Express except that they offer several 'managers events' throughout the week that have a little buffet with food etc. Some nice touches to a good budget-business standard! Reserved room using Hotwire on 6/21. Got there and no reservation for us despite confirmation number. First room key, opened door and other people were already in there. Second room opened door and the room had not been cleaned at all. It took nearly 1 hour and 45 min to get a room and the towels folded above sink still had pink lipstick on them because the room wasn't clean. It cost $169 for night and was definitely not worth it. No parking. They tell you to park down the road at two other locations they have arrangements with. Ridiculous. read more

We had a fantastic experience at the Holiday Inn Express in downtown Spokane. First impression is awesome; for, while it doesn't sit right on the Spokane river, this hotel looks like an old-timey Bavarian mansion! My 3 year old daughter was super excited we were staying in a "castle." From there, we were impressed by the above-average friendliness of the staff. We got to enjoy the Manager's Reception (which they apparently hold Mon- Wed in the early evening), during which they serve free wine and snacks. Very nice. The hotel was quiet, clean, and met all expectations for sleeping accommodations. The breakfast in the morning was hot and good, definitely a cut above your average continental type breakfast. There was also really good variety of foods- eggs, biscuits and gravy, pancakes, bacon, to name just a few things. The final cherry for our stay was the lady (whose name I can't remember, she was Eastern European and her name started with a "D") who managed the breakfast bar. She was so service oriented, she actually had little gifts for all the children who came through and had breakfast there. My daughter received a stuffed caterpillar toy and it made her day! She carried around the rest of the trip. We left very impressed overall, and would definitely go back. read more

Edit: After giving this hotel 2 stars I've receive exceptionally good service. The service was always good but the follow up service to the issue in my original review (below) has been terrific. It's not just a basket with brut and goodies, but some care and attention. They even went to the trouble of having a flat tire on my car fixed. The staff are terrific and very well managed. In fairness and honesty I must still recommend you stay on the top floor. It is a bit noisy, but everything else they do very well. Here's the prior review: There are so many things to like about this hotel...so why the poor review? Check out my reviews here and you'll see I usually don't write negative reviews and if I do it's because a restaurant made me sick or I've been getting bad service for a while. Last night I checked in. Today is day 2 of a 7-day stay. Why not wait until after the trip you might ask? Well, when checking in I told the very polite staff member that quiet mattered more to me than anything. He told me there was only one room left I could take that had a king, i.e. I only had one choice. At first all seemed great. It's a nice room, plenty of space, a cute door to access the parking lot as well as an indoor door, nice shower, nice desk, comfortable bed, etc. They also have a lovely building well located atop a rise with a terrific entrance area with natural light and loads of chairs, benches and couches for socializing or reading or whatever. There are cookies at night and an awesome pancake machine for late-night snacks. My room seemed quiet too. I felt much relief. Wired from a day of cycling and driving I went to bed late... which was a great mistake because everyone else here seemed to get up early, which should not have mattered... but it did. This morning I was awakened by a series of loud thumps. FYI, earplugs don't help with thumps because it's the vibration combined with the sound that wakes you. I realized that I could hear every step from my upstairs neighbor, every thump when he dropped a bag, every slamming of a door. Then I realized it wasn't only the upstairs neighbor, it was car doors just outside my window and also doors in the passages and doors to the outside. This along with the cute doors on both sides of the room seems to translate to banging from all sides. I can usually sleep through this sort of noise or at least fall back asleep, but the noise was loud and went on a while. It was like being surrounded by mean-spirited roosters determined to wake me. There was no getting back to sleep, so after asking at reception to be moved to another room and being told it's booked up and they can't move me to a top floor until tomorrow (meaning a move in the middle of my stay will have to leave my conference to do so, spoiling my trip more), I found myself at breakfast an hour and a half before I intended to be there... and I guess I'm lucky folks around me didn't get up any earlier. Breakfast is excellent by the standards of free hotel breakfasts with plenty for the sugar fiend and real food for the rest of us. There was even gluten-free bread. The coffee was out, which is a cardinal sin, but when informed about it they made more pretty quick. The woman running breakfast was friendly, helpful and took special care to take care of a Finnish woman in a wheelchair...which was awesome to see. Service here seems terrific. So with so much to like, why two stars? Normally I'd have given them 4 or 5 stars without the noise, but with the noise I'd have given them 1 star. They get 2 because they do everything else pretty well. Truth is though, I have stayed a lot of hotels and this is one of the noisiest I've endured and no matter how nice a hotel is around the edges the number one thing you need is a good night's sleep...and I didn't get that...and I probably will not tonight either...then tomorrow I miss hours at the conference center to move and hope for better. Plus packing up the 7 days of stuff I had already filled the cupboard and drawers with and then repacking it all will no fun. It takes the luster off what should be a great trip to a fun conference. On the flip side because they woke me early they gave me extra time to write this review, which I wasn't planning but then they had cards on every breakfast table asking us to review the place on TripAdvisor...so I did and now I'm also here on Yelp where I write most of my reviews. My advice is get a top floor unless you can sleep through anything. Otherwise find a place built better. read more

Let me start by saying I've stayed at the hotel at least 10 times for business trips to Spokane. The good: The staff. The front desk staff will do anything in their power to make your stay better (move you rooms, late checkout, extra water bottles, etc). Dzeanna works the breakfast area and she is the nicest hotel employee you've ever met. The breakfast area is fastidiously clean and well stocked. She'll give you a goodie bag if you're a regular! Free dinner Monday through Wednesday nights and milk & cookies in the evenings. The dinners aren't always amazing, but you get what you pay for because they're free! The cookies are delish. Workout room. The equipment (2 treadmills, 1 elliptical and weight machine) is Precor and is generally well maintained. It's clean, there's a tv and a watercooler. There aren't usually people in there so you can pretty easily snag a machine (can't be said for the Doubletree!). Free and plentiful parking. Free Wifi. The not-so-good: The rooms. They're not bad, but they aren't amazing. Pretty standard holiday inn express. The heater clicks on and off so you have to keep it off if you're a light sleeper. The location is close enough to downtown (15 min walk), but it's not a fun walk by yourself back through the park in the dark (especially if you're a female). So you'll want a car in the winter to get downtown. Also, not a lot of food options within easy walking distance. Overall I choose to stay here because I like getting the priority club points and the staff is great. read more

I travel a ton for work and this hotel is very so-so. I've stayed here three times for business trips and each time had something or another stand out in my mind to come up with my average rating. 1st time: The thing that stuck most in my mind was that the hotel staff was quite friendly and helpful. The second thing was the breakfast: everything was so tiny!! They served miniature bagels, miniature muffins, they even cut their bananas in half.. I'm sorry, but I would never eat a banana that's been cut in half with its cut end starting to brown and bacteria easily permeating into it. I've never been too impressed with Holiday Inn Express breakfasts, but this one was just weird how tiny everything seemed to be.. 2nd time: The staff was friendly and this time, they gave me a pretty nice room on the top floor with a nice enough view. I was also happy to note a flat panel tv. Unremarkable experience, was pleasant although I ignored the breakfasts here for the most part. 3rd time: Not too happy with this experience. I was given a room "with a view" but it was on the 1st floor with a view of the bushes growing outside the patio, and the vending machines were right outside my door. The only other room available was the wheelchair accessible room and I really did *not* want to have to use a handheld shower without a tub to catch the water. The sprinkler system starts up in the evening sometime and will spray into your room if you happen to have the patio door open. The breakfast was still very blah, though I noticed the bananas were not cut in half, just overripe :( Internet speed sucked *ass* even though I was on the 1st floor. Some awful, some good points. I think it's overpriced, but many things seem to be in Spokane. It's a decent place if you get a room with an actual view and there's no rooms available anywhere else. read more

This is the nicest Holiday Inn Express I have seen. PROS: complimentary wine & beer and snacks during happy hour, very large breakfast selections, nice sitting areas and outdoor patio. CONS: you can't easily walk many places, the bed is too squishy, and the linens are too scratchy. Another great experience with Holiday Inn Express! Yes, they are renovating the lobby area so there may be some inconveniences but not for me. Always got a great parking lot right near the entrance I wanted. The walkways were shoveled but the parking lot was kind of dicey due to overnight snow. Breakfast was typical of HIE - cheese omelet, sausage, biscuits & gravy, pancakes, yogurt, cereal, milk, juice. Wish there was fresh fruit and oatmeal but it did the trick. The employees all seemed happy to be there and were very pleasant. Missed out on the evening cookies/meals/drinks because I didn't use the main entrance, and the clerk didn't mention it (other HIE have signs or mention the extras at checkin). Location is super, my room had a cute little balcony with one chair overlooking the convention center area. The bed was comfortable, had lots of pillows, triple sheeted with a light blanket. Another blanket would have been awesome but I didn't feel like calling to ask for one. Room size was average - king bed, desk, entertainment center (with hidden microwave and refrigerator), large flat screen tv, comfortable chair with ottoman. Shower was nice with good pressure, bath tub was average. For being a Priorty club member, I got a a little bag with a bottle of water, some Cheetos, and hard candies. Nice thought, but less than impressive. The workout room appeared small but adequate though I never saw anybody using it. Saw a shuttle in the parking lot but didn't use it so not sure where it goes or if it is free. Wifi available with code given at checkin. Would definitely stay here again and recommend to friends (and strangers). read more
