"In and around the lake Mountains come out of the sky and they stand there" (Yes) What a pleasant surprise! The Holiday Inn Express at St. Ignace sure didn't feel like a Holiday Inn Express. First of all, it has a beach, a big grassy communal courtyard, and chairs where you can sit at the waterline and listen to the seagulls that chitter and chatter like crazy. The beach scenery is gorgeous, and the views of the bay and Mackinac Island are gorgeous. The beds are comfy, the HVC and Wi-Fi work great, and the shower may have been the best hotel shower I ever had. Super pressure and plenty of hot water. Oh, and we had a balcony with a great view of the beach and the courtyard. But the biggest surprise was the amazing breakfast variety and the stellar breakfast service by Sheila and Melissa. They ran around at full speed, cleaning, wiping, refilling and straightening non-stop. As for the breakfast foods, there was a bounty of egg white omelets, scrambled eggs, turkey and pork sausage links, biscuits and gravy, a pancake machine, Cereals, Yogurt, gooey Cinnamon buns, Oatmeal, breads, muffins, bagels, apples, oranges, bananas, and more. Our two-night stay cost us $540.50 after taxes. We could not have been happier with our stay here. Five stars all the way. read more

We stayed here a couple years ago and although the property has fabulous staff and an amazing location/view - the property needs updated rooms with smart TV's, functional remotes, coats of paint & new carpet (rooms & hallways)! We stayed in room 119 - should definitely be a king room vs 2 double beds. Barely had enough room to sneeze and the noise from guests above sounded like romper room with a heard of kangaroos all evening & night. The shower area had peeling paint & needs fresh caulk. Spotted a long black hair in toilet area stuck to wall, door, & hinge. The curtain over the AC needs to be shorter to not interfere with air flow & had black mold on the inner sheer one - double yuck After a long day of traveling we didn't appreciate hearing vacuuming outside our door at 730pm & than again at 930pm. Only hubs had breakfast & coffee - which he said was good & hot!! They did welcome our pet & had a great area for walking & bathroom breaks for him. We thought the Mackinac City property was the worst IHG property we've stayed at - this one is slowly catching up to it, sadly! The newly renovated lobby floor looks spectacular-as does the fire pit & patio!! That was being remodeled last time we stayed here! read more

Very clean. Decently sized room. I almost gave 4 stars because the "closet" was tight and had a refrigerator, coffee maker, and ironing board in it which left no room for my clothes that I didn't want wrinkled. There really wasn't many other places for the fridge and I would rather have one than not so I didn't have the heart to take away a star because it was good for the price in the area during a holiday week (July 4). The breakfast was good. Fresh and hot and staff kept it up and again, VERY clean. We also had a day where housekeeping dropped towels off but left the trash and didn't do anything else. Lori, the manager, and Crystal, the head housekeeper were on it! Crystal cleaned the room and Lori came up to follow up personally. Fantastic customer service. We felt very taken care of. Totally awesome hotel. Great place to stay. The rooms are big. Very comfortable beds. Awesome breakfast each morning. Fruit freshed drinking water near service desk. The guests rooms with huge bathrooms. They furnish toiletries. Just in case you forget to bring them with you. They are on the bathroom counter. The breakfast is hot.eggs.sausage.toast. French toast or pancakes.can't remember which. Pasties.beagles. donuts. Bread for toast. Cream cheese and jelly. Fresh fruits like apples and bananas. Not sure. I believe sausage. If you stood on the beach or sat on the balcony, those nasty little buggers were everywhere! Don't go on the beach or open the door-wall if you stay in May. The hotel employees did vacuum their outdoor patio (off the front lobby) and had fans on for guests to enjoy dinner. Friendly employees, daily breakfast was great! read more

The hotel is a bit rough around the edges. The looby is nice as is the breakfast. It faces the lake with a large fire pit on a patio that was in the process of being constructed. The rooms have balconies overlooking the lake which is nice. The room itself had a comfortable bed but stained carpets, loose tiles, in the bathroom, chipped furniture among other minor issues. We didn't get into town until after 9 so it was good enough for us to sleep until hitting the ferry to Mackinac Island. read more

No, no, no. We spent two too many nights here. We had no other option. The carpet in our room was badly stained like a crime scene, as was the hallway. The shower head was placed at a level for someone 5'4, my husband is over 6'. I laughed, he did not.. It was a room w/ 2 queens and they shoved a desk/chair & a lounger in a space that couldn't accommodate- way too claustrophobic in there! The mattress was rock hard- I thought I was going to need a chiropractor after three 1st night. There was no wifi signal in our room so that was frustrating as well. The bananas and apples they set out for breakfast were well past their prime. I wasn't going to make banana bread. The rest was fine. Our view of the water was nice but I can't get past the carpet, claustrophobic feeling, and lack of wifi. read more

We stayed here for 3 nights on a family vacation. This hotel has some positives including the following : comfortable beds, refrigerator in the room, great free breakfast with many options, nice water pressure in the shower, free shampoo/conditioner/body wash, and decent view of the lake. However, there were several negatives too including bugs hanging out on the ceiling of the room, lampshades in room, and outside of the hotel (lots of them, not just a few), dirty carpets in the hallways, dated decor, no microwave in the room, and the pool water was ice cold. Also, there was construction going on right outside our door to the outside so we couldn't get to the lake that way. Overall, it was an ok stay but we will find another place to stay next time we go to St. Ignace. read more

I don't know why this place is getting such a bad rating?!?! The thing is I am a Spire Elite of IHG, with that being said, I have traveled quite a bit and so this place compare to others is not typical Holiday Inn Express. I doubt people who come here are here for business. This is a tourist destination. Why would someone come here to conduct business, I don't know. Now from a tourist stand point. This place got a bed, WITH CLEAN SHEETS. We stayed on ground floor, because I requested for that, it smells like a typical basement. But my bed room view was all I was there for. I loved the water from my bed, the smell and sound of beach, with seagulls was amazing. we were there for the meteor shower but that couldn't happen since the cloudy weather. But we are planning a return trip soon. It's for sure a serene spot, we had a corner room, we paid extra for, and was worth every penny. I enjoyed it, but my kids Loved it, I am surprised they loved the fact we stayed at the hotel all day!! Price is a bit high, but than again, this was my best vacation, close to home, and for a day away, I felt like I was off to bahamas for all I know. Minus the beauty of Bahamas ;) nothing compares to that. But place to visit when temp are high, and the sky is clear!! I hear it's more beautiful than! read more

I'm with the previous writer...I don't understand the negative reviews either. We turned what started as a negative experience into a very pleasant stay and experience. My adult son booked a getaway at the hotel next door, for himself and us, to do a little exploring. Upon arrival, our room wasn't the large suite he booked and paid for through Orbitz. When we went to the office, we learned that Orbitz had sent wrong info to the hotel. (Lesson here, always call the hotel to verify your booking!) Another couple in the lobby was going through the same thing...booked but no room. The clerk called next door to the Holiday, and got us in 2 double queen rooms next to each other. The original hotel picked up the difference in what we paid, as they didn't have the large suite we booked. While my husband and son went in to get our keys, I was looking on Yelp, and worrying that we were in for a nightmare. It couldn't be further from the truth. It was a neat, clean, and pleasant lobby/breakfast room. Everything, from lobby to hallways, to pool area, to our rooms, were fresh and clean. Nothing looked outdated. There were nice furnishings in the rooms, a dorm size fridge, a Keurig kcup coffeemaker, and very comfy beds. The windows were clean, as was the bathroom. That picture of someone's bloodspot on her sheet? Come on...she finds it in the morning, after she slept all night there. The bed must have been made up by 3 p.m. that previous day. That is a red spot. A spot left by anyone not in her bed when she found it would be dark by then. Brown, or rusty...not red. That is a fresh spot. Maybe she had a scrape on the back of her leg, a hangnail, whatever. That wasn't the maid or a previous resident. Maybe that writer was just looking for a cost offset. Back to my own review. The pool area was excellent, very clean, good temperature for both pool and spa. I thought the pool was a bit cold at first, so I used the spa first, then the pool. Much better. Breakfast was more plentiful than I expected for a free hotel breakfast. Several hot items, along with the usual suspects. Really tasty cinnamon rolls. They did run out of a couple hot items when the crowd got large, around 8:30. By 9, they were replenished. All in all, we were very impressed, and I was grateful I ignored the negative reviews. My only request would be to add microwaves to the rooms for the leftovers we bring from the restaurants. read more

Great views on the lake side and a very good breakfast quality with variety BUT stains on the carpet, dead bugs in curtains, and overall old, unkempt feel and look detracted from our enjoyment. After staying at Holiday Inn Express all throughout U.S., we felt this one fell short--especially after considering the high price. All staff were courteous and helpful but we often saw more staff at the front desk or monitoring the breakfast area than cleaning or maintaining rooms or overall premises. A little TLC for cleanliness would go a long way for this place. read more

We had a nice room, with two queen beds and a jacuzzi tub. The beds were comfortable and we had a lake view. Whomever was in the room next door must have been hanging pictures for about 2 hours, as there was almost constant banging. We opened the sliding door and slept listening to the lapping water. We had been traveling 8 days, going from hotel to hotel. We try to avoid Holiday Inns because they have lousy breakfasts but most of our normal choices were booked. We stayed Friday night and the hotel was packed with families. Saturday morning we went down to breakfast and the breakfast area looked like a high school football team had just stormed through. All the tables were dirty and there was food on the floor throughout the dining area. I only saw one employee working this area. I grabbed a wet rag off her cart and wiped off a bunch of tables. Through most of our travels I lived on hotel waffles. This hotel had a pancake machine but it wasn't working. That left premade food that had been nuked. I decided on a bagel but the little fridge was empty. No butter, yogurt, milk- no nothing. There was also a lack of utensils. The pile of paper plates got knocked to the floor and the employee picked them up and put them back. A guest grabbed the plates and threw them away, citing health department laws. Eventually they reloaded the fridge and I got some cream cheese. My husband isn't as picky as me so he ate the premade egg "omelettes." Ick. When we went through that area an hour later to leave, the tables were wiped but the floor was covered with food still. The rooms are nice. The breakfast sucks. read more

When the hotel we were originally booked at booked our room we went looking for reasonable hotels and fast. The Holiday Inn Express saved us! They were not only available but SO considerate to our situation. The general manager was on duty assisting the front desk clerk and they were both so kind to our family. They gave us an amazing room! It was VERY reasonable and on top of everything, it was a 2nd floor room with a private balcony overlooking Lake Huron. Every morning we saw the sun rise and the sun set. It was gorgeous! The only complaint I had the whole time was the morning front desk guy. When I asked if they were out of cream cheese because the woman putting out breakfast said they were, he acted like I was crazy for wanting it. The next day we asked for change for a $5 and he didn't have a key for the drawer but insisted that the pop machine took $5 bills, which it did not. He was kind of "simple" acting and "lazy." But everyone else was great! The hotel was clean and comfortable. The staff was nice. The view was AMAZING! And they totally had care and concern for my family after that AWFUL Best Western down the road treated us poorly. read more

Stayed here with my wife on 4th of July weekend. The hotel is beautiful and is right on the lake. Our hotel room was in the 4th floor and the balcony overlooked Mackinac Island. Also had view of the fireworks that the island does. The room itself is nice. The bed is comfortable, they have Directv so you have plenty of channels for when you just want to relax for a couple hours. The water pressure is phenomenal, though the shower head is placed a tad low. The AC works great compared to some other hotels I've stayed at. The only negative is that the carpets are a little stained up and the room is a little small compared to all the furniture they stuff into it. 9/10 would definitely recommend. And I will definitely stay here again. read more

The hotel has a nice external appearance and a wonderful lake view. The rooms are serviceable and have a nice layout. The continental breakfast and service at from the breakfast staff is great. That's where the positives end. Much better customer service is needed. I have three main issues that were not well handled from a service standpoint. 1) Crib - I requested a crib when I made the reservation, but nothing was waiting for us. I had to remind them at check-in AND call twice once we checked in to finally get the crib. 2) Turn Down service - Awful. Our daughter was napping while they were cleaning, so we had a DND sign up. I called after she woke up to request turn down service, and had to call several times (exact same situation 2 days in a row). The first day, they didn't come until after we put our daughter down for the night, so we said to forget it. The second night, they came and "cleaned", if you can even call it that. I seriously didn't think they had come at first because of how the room looked - the bed was seriously half made. 3) Package - I gave the desk staff a package (pre-paid postage) to leave out for USPS. This package contained $400 worth of items. After 2 weeks, I hadn't seen the tracking updated so I called back. The gentleman who answered was nice enough, but he said their head housekeeper quit and that he would have to investigate (I don't know how this specifically related to my package). After 2 days with no callback, I called them and was transferred to a manager who seemed like she couldn't care less about my request and told me she put my package out. When I pressed her on it and repeated again what the package looked like, she suddenly said she never saw a package like this. She said she would follow up, never did. But in general, I have never seem such blatant disregard for a customer before and would have preferred the situation was taken more seriously. Also, please consider giving a receipt to customers in the future to document that a package was given and who took it to USPS. Overall, I would never stay at this location again due to the customer service and lack of cleanliness for turndown service. read more

When I was looking for a room in St. Ignace for the weekend and saw the words "lakefront room," I jumped at the chance to hear the waves lapping on Lake Huron as I fall asleep. The description doesn't lie, because you can view the lake, but there is no actual beach and you'll be hard pressed to find a good place to swim. You can go walk around the rocky shore but there really isn't a traditional beach (the current picture is deceiving). The hotel itself is pretty average and seems to be a fairly busy hub for tourists in the summer. I must admit, it's a great launching point for any adventures up into the UP or Mackinac Island. Only about a mile off I-75 and quick access to the few major roads that criss-cross the UP. We had four people in our party, and splitting one room over two nights made this the ultra-economic option. However, were I traveling here by myself or with one other person, it might not be the ideal choice. The amenities themselves were pretty standard though I must give kudos to the internet speeds. My girlfriend wanted to watch the Olympics on her laptop and I was skeptical about streaming video, let alone for two hours straight, but lo and behold, the Holiday Inn Express came through. read more

Staff was kind. That's the reason for the star. Our room was so smelly we checked out. It smelled like a wet basement. They were not able to get us a different room so we had to check out. Maybe the positive reviews are for people who got rooms on the second and third floor. There's no way I would ever attempt to stay in this hotel again. It's too bad. More expensive than it's worth. "Lake view" means "can view the lake if you stand in the right spot and gaze around the corner." I spent nearly $200 for a room without some of the basics like a refrigerator. I would price this room at about $120. The morning breakfast was terrible. The sausage tasted like a sponge with some pepper on it. The English muffin was a bit soggy, then tasteless after toasting. Eggs were about as expected for buffet scrambled. Cinnamon roll was ok. Better off spending a few dollars on a regular breakfast somewhere else. read more

Wayyy over priced for the quality of the rooms - for example when we woke up in the morning (since I honestly didn't look the place over before getting into bed because I was so tired) I woke up to find that I had been sleeping in a BLOOD STAIN, yes you read that right. apparently the cleaning lady thinks that maybe we wouldn't notice the stain or simply think it was ours. Being a nurse and having common sense I knew it wasn't mine. Then as we start to examine our room a little closer we find finger prints and dirt on every surface. If you look at these pictures I have posted there's no way you should ever stay here!!! Update: we waited for the manager to come he never showed up. We were told to get the hell out of the hotel! Stayed here while working nights for a job and I was woken up every single day by the maid staff yelling at each other down the hallway, slamming the heavy hotel doors, and even knocking on my door with the do not disturb sign to ask if I needed anything. One day after the maid woke me up to tell me I missed check out even though I had continued my reservation, as soon as I got back to sleep a manager came to apologize for the confusion. I swear it was a game to get me to answer my door in my boxers. Some days I would attempt to eat some continental breakfast before going to bed in the morning but breakfast never started on time. We are no strangers to the HIE hotels and they are the first hotels we consider when we are looking at staying in a new area. The St. Ignace location did not disappoint. We had the promised view of Mackinac Island. The hotel does not have a gym that we could find but the indoor pool and large jacuzzi were nice and clean. The staff is stellar and very helpful. We stayed in room 414 until the last day of the season and even though the hotel staff was looking forward to closing down for the winter, they did not cut any corners in service. The grounds were immaculate and you just cannot beat the location. We will be back! read more

Tried multiple times to contact the property directly for room rates for the company I work for. Robot answered the call and wanted to know my rewards # and since I didn't have one, it transferred me to corporate reservation line. This person tried to connect me to the property with no success. The phone # of 906-643-0200 is on the website, google maps, and in yellow pages but I couldn't connect directly to the property. If I can't talk to the property directly regarding corporate rates and setting up a direct bill, what problem will I have when I need to make reservations? Very disappointed in this. read more

We had been staying in Motels with our 4 children during our U.P. vacation and wanted the kiddos to enjoy their last night and everyone have a good nights rest, so we went with the Holiday Inn Express after calling to verify they had laundry and a pool (yes to both!). Room was great, enough room for all 6 of us, comfortable beds, and a wonderful view of Lake Michigan. There are 2 washers and 2 dryers on the 1st floor that cost $1.25/load. They were fast! Always a bonus. Pool was spacious and includes an attached hot tub. The breakfast the next morning was outstanding! Plenty of options and tasted good. Walking distance to many things, or just a short drive to many other attractions. Front desk staff was pleasant and accommodating. They even keep rolls of quarters at the desk if you need change for laundry! read more

A very clean hotel. Seemed brand new. Everything was updated to modern decor. Clean, smelled great and breakfast seemed as real as hotel food can get. We got an awesome deal on a King suite with jacuzzi... No refrigerator in our room though. :/ Plus you don't have all the tourists on that side of the island. I had made reservations with points and unfortunately had to cancel them a day and a half prior to my stay. I expected at this time to lose one nights points (the currency I had used to make the reservation). However, instead the hotel charged me $303.00! I spoke with the "Manager" Rachel and found her to be in great need of customer service training. When I asked who else I could speak to she said there was no one else and nothing could be done! So, I called corporate. Eventually, due to my having stayed at this brand over 60 nights corporate refunded me and took my points. However, the management of this hotel continually refused to do this. Beware of this hotel and the policy of charging outrageous amounts when you cancel a reservation made with points. read more

very nice staff, but the hotel itself is tired. probably you get what you pay for, but this really isnt up to the Holiday Inn Express standards. It looks like a holiday inn inside and out, but lots of "issues". I am 6' and the shower head hits me in the chin. I dont like bath accommodations where the sink is outside the bath area. our first room the beds were so bad we asked to have a different room. Not much better, but a floor higher so view was better. Our room had a broken off security latch; how does that happen and not get fixed? Over all we were comfortable with no issues, but the place isnt special. Oh, and beware of the midges coming off the lake in mid-June. it is an awesome sight! I'd really like to give the hotel a better grade just for the very nice people working there. read more

Our weekend experience at Holiday Inn St Ignace was amazing! Laurie was so helpful, as orbitz booked us in another hotel that was overbooked. Laurie found us a beautiful lakefront room last minute. The room was very clean, with new updated furniture, comfortable bed and big mini fridge. The pool was very clean, and HEATED! The work out room is disgusting. It's next to a mechanical room in the basement and is about 95 degrees. They don't clean it, or maintain it. There is no way to clean the equipment after sweating and they don't keep towels in the room. There was a used cup left there for days. The Tv doesn't work and the room stinks. I called and asked to get towels to clean the treadmill after I had sweated all over it and they said they'd bring some. They never came. We picked this hotel because they said it had a fitness center. It's the worst fitness center I've ever been in. If they aren't going to maintain it they should shut it down. We told ta couple employees and they did nothing. It makes you wonder about the rest of the hotel. read more
