My family & I were there for almost 6 months- the first few months we were there the property managers were very friendly, and helpful. The rooms are equipped with a small kitchen, it reminds me of a studio apartment. During our stay there several different altercations took place on the premises between other people who were staying there and management. Drugs are VERY prevalent at this establishment, and are effecting the way this business is being ran. There is a noticeable change in the management and the way things are being done at this establishment. The rooms are not being cleaned well, and there are roaches in several of the rooms. During our stay there we were given linen upon check in- never again after that. There were burn holes & stains on the flat sheets we were given. The mattresses were gross, no mattress protector- I had to purchase my own. We were given tissues on occasion, but never toilet paper or other essentials that most motels would provide and are included in the room rates. There is no housekeeping on a day to day basis. The cleaning supplies that are provided, such as a vacuum or carpet cleaner are not cleaned and covered in filth. The washer & dryers that are paid for do not work, and the ones that are there for use of the property managers are only used by a select few people who are allowed. There are SEVERAL dogs here. Most defaecate all over the parking lot, and on the walkway that is upstairs. Overall this was not a positive experience and I'd strongly encourage you to look elsewhere to stay if you are able. The drugs and attitudes run rampant there. The managers are delusional and make up their own rules, and ways to charge people for rooms. (Such as if two working men are staying in the same room, they both have to pay rent rate, it cannot just be one of them at one rate) the door locks are not secure & someone can easily card your door. There were several occasions people were entering rooms they had no business being in, or had not given notice to go into. Hope this gives some insight and someone finds it helpful!

There was a dead bug in the bed. The windowsill at the head of the bed had an inch of sanding dust, apparently from the remodel of the room. The sofa was ripped and patched with packing tape. No coffee. No breakfast. It's what I would have expected for a $40 hostel.

Met the owner, Allen Neely, and had several interesting conversations with him on the history of the area as well as the MacArthur Inn itself. (It is actually named for General Douglas MacArthur). I can HIGHLY recommend staying at the MacArthur Inn if you are visiting or passing thru this area of Virginia. It was really nice to have a very comfortable bed to sleep in AND to have plush towels (not the thin kind you usually find at hotels). Also, as a retired hospital administrator, I appreciated the high level of cleanliness of the hotel. Staff was extremely helpful and friendly too. We stayed at the Fishing Creek cabin that sleeps six and has a small kitchenette with Wi-Fi. This cabin is also Creekside and has chairs with the fire pit set right next to the creek. The cabin was super clean. The beds weren't the greatest, but they weren't terrible either. To fish the creek it's $25 per person per day, but the creek is stocked and we caught plenty of trout. My husband and I would definitely stay here again and are looking forward to coming back. The only negative was that Four Fillies offers add-ons to the reservation such as in cabin massages or cake pops waiting in the cabin upon arrival. We booked for and paid for both of these add-ons provided, but received neither as the massage therapist canceled and the bakery where the cake pops come from was closed the day of our arrival we did however get a refund.

Main Street Inn has roughly 7-10 spots, then there are temporary spots available in order to check in. Check in was easy enough, although the man at the counter was asleep when we arrived. The room was spacious with 2 queen size beds. Also, there was a small flatscreen television and typical things you'd find in a hotel room (hangers, dresser, clock, iron, ironing board, etc.). The bathroom was spacious and clean. The one thing that was missing was vending machines, and I didn't see an ice machine. But there is a convenience store across the street and a 7-11 about 2 blocks away, so that wasn't a big issue. The room was $200 a night. On the positive side, the two young women at the desk were kind and helpful, but overall, this was not the charming stay we expected and we would not return.

They've recently acquired the hostel from The former owner who still lives in the area and as Foodies themselves make incredible meals. For supper the first night we had cheese stuffed shells with arrabiata meat sauce and the second night we had "Mexican lasagna." Both nights there was a yummy salad. Eric mentioned how much he likes it when gluten-free hikers come through as he is (completely) gluten-free himself, and it allows him to have second crack at any leftovers. Breakfast was amazing buttermilk flapjacks, and eggs mixed with spinach, as well as sausage for those who want it. (And infinite amounts of coffee for those who need that.). The bath house was recently built -- 3 giant shower stalls with locking doors (but Al fresco so I'm not sure how that would feel during colder months.). We got one of the private rooms which had three beds and could've slept five comfortably, but the toilet is communal as per usual at hostels. There is a stream with small fish, large crawdads and some cool giant pollywogs on the other side of the gravel driveway. The front yard of the property is a field where we (with other resting hikers) watched an impressive number of butterflies and we understand the firefly show is impressive during June-July. The biodiversity of the Appalachian Trail on either side of this property is unparalleled. I read it's the most biodiverse temperate forest in the world and I believe it. Do yourself a favor and pay them a visit!

Being off the beaten path, it's easy to forget about life in the "real world." It was so quiet and peaceful; you only hear the sounds and see the sights of nature that have been lost in far too many places. I stayed in the Farmhouse Inn, the main house of the resort. It was clean, tastefully designed and well-furnished. I was the only one staying in this space, so again, it was very quiet. I spent a few hours outside in the evening chatting with a few other guests who were staying on the grounds. We sat out on the patio area during this time, and even decided to have our dinner there, as the weather was beautiful. While we ate, several deer payed a visit to the grounds to get dinner for themselves. Speaking of dinner, it was fantastic. I had a fresh salad, that I can only assume came from the organic garden on the grounds. Additionally, I had a vegetable lasagna and finished my meal with some delicious apple cake. Since I was leaving early the next morning for work, a breakfast basket was prepared for me with a variety of baked goods, orange juice, fruit, and a serving of the best baked oatmeal I ever had. Gail and Gary, the owners, were fantastic as well. They were extremely helpful from booking through my checkout. There were several emails sent to me prior to my visit with all the directions and information I needed to know for my arrival. Since I was arriving during their off hours, they prepared a binder for me that got me to my room and settled in until we had a chance to meet later in the evening. If you are interested in connecting with the outside world during your stay, cell service is spotty. I was told that only some cell service work there. However, there is a public phone that anyone can access if needed at no cost. In addition, the Farmhouse Inn has wifi. I don't believe this is true for all the outer houses. But since you come by the Farmhouse for meals, and any other time you want to, it shouldn't be an inconvenience. Overall, I have absolutely no complaints. I would HIGHLY reccomend this place if you're in the area.
