Our 5 year old dog suddenly stopped being able to stand one day. It was a Sunday morning and we rushed her to the emergency vet in Santa Rosa. After consulting with the ER vet, she suspected a slipped disc and said if this was her dog, she'd get them straight to a neurologist. Within 45 minutes of arriving at the ER, we were on our way to Nuero Vet in Pleasant Hill. The Santa Rosa vet had called their office during her exam and they were able to see us right away. We'd never dealt with anything like this before, so we crossed our fingers and hoped for the best. Dr. Johnson reviewed her gait and back, suspecting a slipped disc. He recommended her staying overnight at the hospital on some pain meds and getting a MRI the next day, with the prognosis most likely being a need for surgery. It was devastating news to hear, but anything for our baby. Dr. Johnson walked us through the process and I really felt through him that he saw our sweet girl as a family member to us, not "just a pet". Every part of the conversation was made through that lens, helping me feel more at ease with the blow we had been dealt. I was in a place of shock, worry, and anxiety with the suddenness of it all, and he definitely helped me feel at ease as he walked me through the processes and options lying before us. The next day, I got a call from Dr. Johnson that it was indeed a slipped disc and she'd need to head straight into surgery to get the disc removed. He was surprised out how well she was moving around considering the severity of what was showing in her imaging. He called her "one tough cookie". I waited on pins and needles while our girl was in surgery and was so appreciative of the quick responses the whole time she was there. On a side note, I was also extremely grateful that we have dog insurance on all of our pups! We picked our sweet girl up the day after surgery and took her home for her several week recovery. We are three months out from surgery and she is back to running around, playing, and going on walks. We look forward to getting her back out camping and backpacking next season. If you suspect your dog has IVDD, skip the standard ER vet and go straight to Neuro Vet! I went to Sage initially but they were only able to offer an x-ray which was inconclusive. I've since been to Neuro Vet a handful of times within the past six weeks - initially for conservative care options. My dog Rigby had cervical IVDD and ultimately (after trying multiple medications and conservative treatment, but he was in too much pain, and kept having pain outbursts randomly) underwent surgery with Dr. Johnson. I came in one Saturday night to see if we could try other medications, and after consulting with the doctor, decided to do the surgery instead. My dog stayed overnight. The MRI and surgery were done the next day and took about 2 hours total. The staff and doctor were very communicative which eased my anxiety a lot! I was able to pick up my boy 24 hours later. He immediately felt so much better! Even so, he needed to rest for four weeks after. It's been a journey, but it was all worth it to see our dog get back to his normal happy self. Today he had his follow up and he is cleared to go back on walks again, and we are overjoyed! Thanks so much to the staff for working around the clock and being so gracious. Our three-year-old dog suddenly became incontinent and showed signs of injury. We took him to Modern Animal Hospital in Palo Alto and they ran several diagnostic tests on him, including a series of x-rays. The images seemed to indicate that there was some kind of spot where lumbar meets sacral (L6, L7, S1). He seemed suspicious for IVDD. We were given the usual recommendations for neurologists in the area, but I couldn't find an appointment soon enough at most of them, and I didn't feel great about the vet at the one where there was an appointment available within a couple of weeks. I was extensively researching other options when I somehow came across Neuro Vet. WOW, WOW, WOW!!!! A 24-hour vet JUST for neurological conditions and concerns!? The doctors seemed excellent in terms of credentials and experience so I calls Sage to cancel and get my deposit back. They were so eager for my business that they repeatedly tried to convince me to go forward with them by offering to make time immediately for our dog. This was interesting because I previously begged them for any way to come in sooner and they were firm in telling me that they were solidly booked. I felt very drawn to Neuro Vet, so we drove 1.5 hours from our home on New Year's Eve to visit them. They were absolutely PHENOMENAL. I am so incredibly happy with the way that they have cared for him so far. We took him back yesterday for what ended up being a full body MRI and a spinal tap. We made an appt at the NeuroVet for our 12 year old English bulldog after she developed seizures and was seen at the ER. W were very satisfied with Dr Otamendi. After the exam- he spent as much time as we needed to explain the treatment plan and possible outcomes, answered all our questions, and suggested us to call if there were any problems. A few weeks after that, our dog developed symptoms that were very concerning. We did not know what was going on, called NeuroVet, spoke to Dr Otamendi and he prescribed a new medication. Within day-two all those new symptoms were gone, and, very importantly, he explained what was going on with our dog. What a relief for the dog and my family! After she experienced a sudden seizure, and I can't say enough good things about the care she and we received. From the moment we arrived, the entire team was calm, compassionate, and incredibly professional. We were heart broken that our dear cat was having these sudden seizures and Dr. Johnson explained everything clearly, and they quickly scheduled an MRI and spinal tap to get to the root of the problem. The staff treated our cat gently and kept us updated throughout the process, which really eased our stress during a scary time, especially for me the non-vet professional, I am a social worker. The facility is very clean, new, organized, and clearly equipped with the top of the line advanced diagnostic tools. They even have a red light thingy in the recovery room for the pets (advanced stuff). I was extremely disappointed with Dr. Otamendi's, the neurologist, bedside manner yesterday. Not only did we drive two hours to get there, we had already paid about $5,700 for the consultation and MRI and we were facing a very serious decision about our dog's treatment plan. We came prepared with important questions about our dog's prognosis and treatment options, but it was nearly impossible to get a word in. The neurologist talked at length, and whenever we tried to ask something, it felt like we could barely get a word in before the conversation moved on. Before we were able to finish our questions, we were told that the vet tech could answer the rest because he had an urgent matter he needed to get to and seemed frustrated by our questions. We did record him with his permission, so we could remember everything we needed to do. We have been exhausted caring for our dog while he's been in pain so a recording is a great reference to go back to. Since we have that recording, we know our visit was about 15 mins. We definitely felt rushed out of the conversation. What made this particularly frustrating was that surgery had been offered for that same day. I completely understand that emergencies happen, especially in specialty veterinary medicine, but once we declined surgery that was over $10k, I was left with the uncomfortable feeling that there was suddenly much less time available to help us understand the conservative treatment plan we had chosen. Thankfully, the vet tech Jennifer was AMAZING. She was patient, compassionate, and answered every remaining question we had. Her bedside manner was everything we needed in such an emotional situation. Jennifer provided the five-star experience. I expected the neurologist to set that standard, not fall short of it. Unfortunately, last week she was showing signs of another back injury. Stressed and upset, I found that he had opened his own practice. I brought my 6 year old dog in as an emergency neuro case after emergency vets told us that our dog should be seen by a neurologist since she was experiencing mobility issues without an injury. During our emergency visit on 6/18, the Dr told me to call if the medication they rx'd made my dog better or worse and it would be helpful to know to rule out other things. They did an X-ray on her leg and recommended we schedule an MRI, but Neuro Vet's MRI capabilities were down for at least a week. My dog was seen 6/18 and the soonest she could get scheduled for an MRI was 6/26. My dog had existing conditions that we discussed with the veterinarian that made medications particularly concerning to us, but these concerns were dismissed during phone exchanges that we had with Neuro Vet after my dog's visit. I had followed up about one of the medications they prescribed since my dog's mobility issues worsened only when she was given the medication. The person on the phone dismissed my concerns and said it was impossible for the medication to make my dog's mobility worse. Our dog's mobility improved after we sought out advice from another vet that recommended we stop giving her the meds Neuro Vet prescribed and the other vet ordered other tests to rule out other conditions. Now, I do not blame Neuro Vet for what happened to my dog. Neither Neuro Vet or her primary vet had reason to suspect my dog's condition was life threatening because she seemed well enough during encounters that no one would think that sudden death was possible for her. 6 days after her initial visit with neuro vet, my dog did suddenly pass away, which is not consistent with any of the neuro conditions Neuro Vet wanted to screen her for (with MRI). After my dog passed, the results from blood work other tests we requested to be done with another vet came back, and based on the professional opinion of the other vet it appeared that the sudden death of my dog was due to a blood clot that had moved to her heart, a condition that is rare, but can also present as weakness in limbs that looks similar to neurological lameness in dogs. Neuro vet was the end of the road for us, emergency vets sent us there, and MRI wasn't even available within the timeframe that my dog was still alive. This review isn't about Neuro vet's competence as veterinarians, this is about service and how awful it felt to be seeking professional veterinary care and help and instead of being given information or options, our concerns were minimized or dismissed. Based on the conversation I had with the veterinarian there, they made it seem like calling and asking questions was expected, however, in the 3 follow up calls I had with Neuro Vet after my dog's visit, I was not given the option to request a callback from the Dr, schedule another appointment, or recommendation if who I should speak to instead if the emergency vet or Neuro vet could not help my dog's mobility issues. These interactions felt unprofessional and the person on the phone seemed apathetic and uninterested in helping us, which made the whole situation feel much more distressing than it needed to be. read more

He became a total ZOMBIE!!!After a few months of this we contacted Dr Johnson because we knew something wasn't right. He told us to wait a few more months and wasn't concerned with checking the PB levels!!!!! Hopefully you never find yourself in this situation, though if you do, this is the best vet I've ever been to and the place you want to be. They are responsive, quick and incredibly warm and kind. Our 13-year old dog had been diagnosed with "Old Dog Syndrome" (Yes, it's a real thing!) where his head was permanently tilted almost 90 degrees, and he became unsteady on his feet. But instead of getting better, he kept getting worse. We took him to ER a few days later--Pacific Medical, which was also excellent. They confirmed he was misdiagnosed and it was neurological. They linked us up with Neuro Vet who offered to see him same day. Given he had already been in ER almost all day, we opted to take him home to rest and they said they could see him the following day for an MRI. Through of all of it, the entire Neuro Vet staff was incredibly kind, empathetic and has been continually responsive to all our questions, including referrals and requests for medical records. I just wish we could use them as our primary care vet. We're still on this journey with radiation and oncology to figure out the best path for our dog, but can't say enough great things about the team and facility here. read more

When Dr. Johnson was at Pacific in Lafayette, he helped our cat beat meningitis. He was always upbeat about our cat's condition even though we had serious concerns. More than four years later, our cat is still with us, although suffering from some neurological issues that were likely brought on by the meningitis. But at 17-plus years, she still enjoys life. While treating her, and even in the years after, Dr. Johnson always cheerfully responded to emails I peppered him with concerning our cat's condition.
