Our three-year-old dog suddenly became incontinent and showed signs of injury. We took him to Modern Animal Hospital in Palo Alto and they ran several diagnostic tests on him, including a series of x-rays. The images seemed to indicate that there was some kind of spot where lumbar meets sacral (L6, L7, S1). He seemed suspicious for IVDD. We were given the usual recommendations for neurologists in the area, but I couldn't find an appointment soon enough at most of them, and I didn't feel great about the vet at the one where there was an appointment available within a couple of weeks. I was extensively researching other options when I somehow came across Neuro Vet. WOW, WOW, WOW!!!! A 24-hour vet JUST for neurological conditions and concerns!? The doctors seemed excellent in terms of credentials and experience so I calls Sage to cancel and get my deposit back. They were so eager for my business that they repeatedly tried to convince me to go forward with them by offering to make time immediately for our dog. This was interesting because I previously begged them for any way to come in sooner and they were firm in telling me that they were solidly booked. I felt very drawn to Neuro Vet, so we drove 1.5 hours from our home on New Year's Eve to visit them. They were absolutely PHENOMENAL. I am so incredibly happy with the way that they have cared for him so far. We took him back yesterday for what ended up being a full body MRI and a spinal tap. We will find out more about what is going on soon. Thank you wholeheartedly, Dr Fitz and the whole Neuro Vet team!!!!

My dog Ollie lost use of his back legs, because he injured his back, and Dr Fitz at Neuo Vet, got us in quickly and Ollie got same-day surgery! That saved his back legs, and he was up on his feet in a matter of days! Obviously every case is different, but I'm amazed! The Neurologists are incredible and so is the rest of the staff! They were great at prepping me for taking care of Ollie's recovery. Thanks Neuro Vet!!

Neuro Vet was fantastic to work with after our cat Lily's recent seizure episode. We brought our young five year old cat to The Neuro Vet since Dr. Erik Johnson came highly recommended in the bay area for veterinarian neurology (and my husband is a speciality vet too ACVIM). After she experienced a sudden seizure, and I can't say enough good things about the care she and we received. From the moment we arrived, the entire team was calm, compassionate, and incredibly professional. We were heart broken that our dear cat was having these sudden seizures and Dr. Johnson explained everything clearly, and they quickly scheduled an MRI and spinal tap to get to the root of the problem. The staff treated our cat gently and kept us updated throughout the process, which really eased our stress during a scary time, especially for me the non-vet professional, I am a social worker. The facility is very clean, new, organized, and clearly equipped with the top of the line advanced diagnostic tools. They even have a red light thingy in the recovery room for the pets (advanced stuff). Their office takes Trupanion as well for payment, which is a great pet insurance company for doing direct pay when authorized. Their prices are extremely competitive for the area. Thankfully, our cat Lily is now recovering well, and we have answers for peace of mind. Which is worth it. I truly believe their prompt actions made all the difference. I highly recommend The Neuro Vet to anyone facing a neurological emergency with their pet -- their expertise and compassion are unmatched.

i just would like to say thank you to the staff for being very attentive on getting back to people about instructions and in general for any questions. I have nothing but respect for Doctor Erik Johnson as he has always been honest and never pushy about proceeding to do something immediately unless he feels too, this has been my experience with him and i truly appreciate that because things can get costly fast . The office is very nice and clean as well . Again i have to say it doctor Johnson is amazing and has a good personality and heart .

We will forever be grateful for the team at Neuro Vet. Our 3-year-old Frenchie, Piper, had a herniated disc in her neck (IVDD). She was in excruciating pain and our local vet recommended we go immediately. The team was wonderful, professional, and you can tell that every person there truly cares, starting with Dr. Erik Johnson. Our girl went straight from the MRI into surgery and was back home with us the next day. The staff kept us informed the entire time and this was the first experience I've EVER had when a doc said to me, "thank you for taking care of your girl." I can't say enough nice things about this place. About a month later, Piper is back at it like it never happened. We received SO much education through this experience from the start to the post-op appointment. So not only did we get our girl back on track - we are now also armed with the knowledge to prevent further complications.

Dr Johnson & Lou are absolutely phenomenal. They have gone above and beyond for my beloved cat Duke. I am so grateful we have such an amazing neurologist in our area. Their new hospital is gorgeous and state of the art. I am so blessed Lou has been there for my cat and listened to all my concerns and gotten answers for him. Thank you truly for Dukes exceptional care.

We found Dr Johnson 2 years ago (at a different practice) when our Frenchie had a herniated disk. He was amazing and fixed her like new. Unfortunately, last week she was showing signs of another back injury. Stressed and upset, I found that he had opened his own practice. I called and they were able to take us a few hours later as an emergency appointment. Our Stella did in fact have another herniated disk. Dr. Fitz operated on her that evening and she is back home recovering. I can't say enough about how amazing Neuro vet is.

    Birdie, the epileptic.

Dr Johnson and his team, I see you Lou, were amazing. This new hospital is top tier. The aesthetic is unreal. You have to see this place to believe it. From the gold accents in the bathroom to the sleek design. But much more importantly, the experience was seamless. We waited all of 5 min to get into the exam room. Lou was great, she always is. They were so kind to my anxious frenchie. And genuinely care about her. When she was diagnosed with epilepsy, I was so upset and freaked out. Dr Johnson put her on Keppra and she hasn't had an episode since then. I cannot recommend this practice highly enough. We will never go anywhere else for our Neuro needs. It's also very reassuringly to know that they take emergencies as well. May we never need that service. Thank you to the neuro Vet team, y'all are unmatched.

I brought my 6 year old dog in as an emergency neuro case after emergency vets told us that our dog should be seen by a neurologist since she was experiencing mobility issues without an injury. During our emergency visit on 6/18, the Dr told me to call if the medication they rx'd made my dog better or worse and it would be helpful to know to rule out other things. They did an X-ray on her leg and recommended we schedule an MRI, but Neuro Vet's MRI capabilities were down for at least a week. My dog was seen 6/18 and the soonest she could get scheduled for an MRI was 6/26. My dog had existing conditions that we discussed with the veterinarian that made medications particularly concerning to us, but these concerns were dismissed during phone exchanges that we had with Neuro Vet after my dog's visit. I had followed up about one of the medications they prescribed since my dog's mobility issues worsened only when she was given the medication. The person on the phone dismissed my concerns and said it was impossible for the medication to make my dog's mobility worse. Our dog's mobility improved after we sought out advice from another vet that recommended we stop giving her the meds Neuro Vet prescribed and the other vet ordered other tests to rule out other conditions. Now, I do not blame Neuro Vet for what happened to my dog. Neither Neuro Vet or her primary vet had reason to suspect my dog's condition was life threatening because she seemed well enough during encounters that no one would think that sudden death was possible for her. 6 days after her initial visit with neuro vet, my dog did suddenly pass away, which is not consistent with any of the neuro conditions Neuro Vet wanted to screen her for (with MRI). After my dog passed, the results from blood work other tests we requested to be done with another vet came back, and based on the professional opinion of the other vet it appeared that the sudden death of my dog was due to a blood clot that had moved to her heart, a condition that is rare, but can also present as weakness in limbs that looks similar to neurological lameness in dogs. Neuro vet was the end of the road for us, emergency vets sent us there, and MRI wasn't even available within the timeframe that my dog was still alive. This review isn't about Neuro vet's competence as veterinarians, this is about service and how awful it felt to be seeking professional veterinary care and help and instead of being given information or options, our concerns were minimized or dismissed. Based on the conversation I had with the veterinarian there, they made it seem like calling and asking questions was expected, however, in the 3 follow up calls I had with Neuro Vet after my dog's visit, I was not given the option to request a callback from the Dr, schedule another appointment, or recommendation if who I should speak to instead if the emergency vet or Neuro vet could not help my dog's mobility issues. These interactions felt unprofessional and the person on the phone seemed apathetic and uninterested in helping us, which made the whole situation feel much more distressing than it needed to be.

You never hope to need a neurologist for your animals, (especially a second time!) but my goodness am I grateful for Neuro Vet. Dr. Johnson, Dr. Fitz, and now Dr. Otamendi are the best, there are no other words to express it. The empathy, care, and compassion they have for animals and their owners is completely unmatched. From the moment you call Neuro Vet, you are treated with such kindness in a stressful situation. From my pup going into an emergency consult, to MRI, surgery, and now preparing for discharge, I have felt supported every step of the way. There is always a neurologist available, which is a unique experience in emergency care. To ease my anxiety while Auggie has been hospitalized, the neurologist on duty has called me both morning and night to ensure I had updates on my Auggie. I never feel like a burden when I am speaking to anyone at Neuro Vet, they understand how stressful and unique each situation is. If you are looking for a neurologist for your pet, look no further. Thank you to the entire Neuro Vet team!

Throughout my experience, there seemed to be very little effort to discuss alternative options or genuinely address the root of my dog's issues. Instead, the only solutions presented involved continuously prescribing more medication without much explanation or care for long-term wellbeing. What was even more frustrating was being charged a "service fee" that staff could not clearly explain when asked. If clients are expected to pay additional fees, there should at minimum be transparency and professionalism regarding what those charges are actually for. I understand veterinary medicine is difficult and clinics are busy, but compassion, communication, and honesty should still be basic standards of care. During this process, not ONCE did they push euthanasia.. they left it up to us to decide that which is something we appreciated very much. They reassured us that they were able to be reached via email, text and/or call to update them on Kitty's treatment at any time. They were responsive and on top of every little thing. Of course, Kitty was a 16 year old bombay and could not function like a normal cat any longer even with the extensive treatment that was prescribed to us. His health deteriorated rapidly due to his illness (hyperthyroidism) that not even the medicine could treat. We then had to make one of the hardest decisions of our lives to put him down so he can finally live a life of peace. Thank you to the health care team (Dr. Narg, Sheila, Leah, Marissa, and many more) for treating Kitty, my partner and I with so much tender care and I will never forget how comfortable you all made us feeling during this very hard transition. We brought in our Pomeranian because he was experiencing significant pain. I was expecting the visit to go like other visits I had before at other vet emergency hospitals, where they whisk your pet away and you spend all of your time waiting and wondering what is happening. Instead, we were escorted to a nice padded bench (that he promptly shed all over, sorry if you are still finding fur there) and most of the examinations and work was done there. The staff was so kind and friendly, coming over to check on us and give him pats and so much love. There was another emergency surgery happening when we arrived, so they were giving us constant updates to make sure we knew what was going on. When I spoke to the vet, she was kind and gave specific recommendations (rather than a past emergency vet experience where they just gave us options and expected us to know what to do). Unfortunately, it became clear that our Pomeranian was not doing well, as he started displaying severe neurological symptoms and declined rapidly despite the treatment for his pain and a UTI. The vet ultimately suspected a brain tumor based on his behavior, and was very upfront and clear with us about his chances. Although it was devastating, we really appreciated how honest they were. We made the difficult decision to put him down (he had declined so quickly he probably would not have lasted the night), and everyone was so kind during the process. They gave us time to be with him and were so kind and sympathetic during the process. Although I am still heartbroken at losing our dog, the fact that we were able to spend so much of his last day actually being with him was something we really treasured, especially since the loss was so unexpected.
