I called in to get a quote for a repair on an older car and was told "That is just not a car where are taking in right now." I politely asked the gentleman on the phone for clarification on what he meant: "Can you please explain what you mean by that?" " I am not sure I undestand, can you explain the rationale? He repeated the same sentence four times in a condescending tone. The repair I need costs over $1,200 in labor alone. I understand a business can refuse service to anyone, but treating customers poorly is not a profitable business practice. A positive tone and some patience can do wonders, even I am being turned away! read more

My car is a senior citizen, an old Honda with well over 100,000 miles, but I am hopeful it will go another 100,000 with continued service from the sane, measured, honest folks at Holland. They keep things working, over and over, for fair prices. They've fixed my a/c, replaced a hose on my power steering, and provided routine maintenance...they seem to be able to do it all. This review is a long time coming and I'm glad I'm finally sitting down to acknowledge them for the years of great service they have given me. Chris the owner and Robert my favorite mechanic have always been honest and fair with me and done a great job keeping me and my car on the road. Lexann the office manager had recommended them when our kids used to play together by basically saying ' they don't 'fix' stuff that isn't broken. That is for sure true. They are all friendly, accommodating down to earth real people and super competent professionals. Usually you'll need at least a week (unless emergency?) to get an appointment so whenever possible give yourself plenty of time to get the service on your car you're needing. I let my water pump leak go too long and it overheated. That caused the intake manifold to leak as well. Chris and the team fixed both problems in just two days. My van had been sitting way too much the past two years and more and it needed most fluids changed and a variety of details handled, and Chris and crew seemed to do a great job at a fair enough price. These guys are probably the best mechanics you can find. I have a very large old chevy van with an unwieldy 7.4 liter 454 v8. To make matters worse, it's crammed into a small and very hard to get to engine compartment. The prospect of changing out the spark plugs and wires was frankly daunting. This from someone who's pretty mechanically savvy. No problem for Chris and the crew at Holland Service though! They did a full service (oil change, etc.) as well as replaced all my spark plugs and ignition wires and vacuum set up. They checked the rest of the truck over and let me know any other potential problems, things like replacing the differential seal and fluid. Clearly they were unafraid to crawl under and inspect my beast of a truck. The truck starts right up now, and runs and idles beautifully. Plus it passed smog with no problem after this. Even more important was all the free advice and wisdom they gave me. This old truck is unusual, and I had to learn a lot. I was impressed with how much Chris the owner and the other mechanics knew. Even though their price is super fair--what you pay for with places that have been around a while like Holland Service is the tremendous expertise and experience, especially for odd old school vehicles like mine. Recently, I drove to the Berkeley area from Ventura, and the second day of my visit the Alternator on my car stopped working properly. Asking around if anyone knew of a reputable and reliable local repair shop, I was twice referred to Holland Service. Upon my arrival, Christine greeted me with a fantastic smile, and inquired how she could help me. Right away, I knew these were good people to work with. As I explained my car challenge, and the fact that I was out of town with no other transportation, Christine immediately went to work on my behalf to move things around in the schedule to fit me in. She inquired of Chris, the owner, how they could help me out, and both of them put their minds together to make it happen for me! Needless to say, the outcome was incredible! Not only did they fit me into the schedule, they gave me an estimate of what was wrong, what options I had available, what they recommended, how long it would take, and how much it would cost me... all up front, so I could make an intelligent decision on the facts. Wife took our old car there because of good yelp ratings. We paid an exorbitant amount and a couple months later we had more problems with the car. Hard to tell if it was the same thing or related but was made to think all issues were resolved. What I didn't like is he started working on the car without giving us a quote or estimate. One redeeming quality it was repaired quickly but maybe that was a negative. We will never know :-( I just hope we don't have to go back there again. read more

I live around the corner. I think Chris is a good guy who might have gotten too busy for his shop's capacity and quality has suffered as a result. I had 2 separate bad experiences here. Once I drove my truck in to get the starter/flywheel looked at and I watched on one of his mechanics literally rip a wire out from under my hood and then claim it needed a $40 repair. I'm a mechanic on the side and could have repaired the part for the cost of a two cent plastic connector, but now my truck was stranded at his shop and I didn't have my tools. I asked to borrow tools to fix it and he said that he wasn't in the tool rental business. So he charged me $20 as a compromise. the best part was that I DID THE REPAIR while his mechanic watched. that I can't blame on him, but he also didn't take ownership of the mistakes his employees made. The second thing was troubleshooting and changing a starter pinion / flywheel on the same Toyota. I got all the parts for him and asked him to either replace the flywheel ring gear and/or the starter, whichever had the worn teeth causing the problem. When I went to pick it up he had replaced both of them, and so I asked for the old parts back. The starter was clearly bad, and the ring gear was in great shape, which meant the ring gear didn't need to be replaced. His mechanics just didn't care enough to follow directions and inspect the parts they were replacing. Again, this was not directly Chris's fault, but a result of him hiring sub-par guys to work at his shop, and then not taking responsibility for the work they did. I hope he has since increased the quality of his mechanics, there is great potential for this shop, its just falling short as is. read more

I recently joined the legion of folks who've had the catalytic converter stolen from their car. For me, it happened Christmas Eve, so I knew it was going to be tough even finding a shop that was answering their phones, much less open. But after reading laudatory reviews here on Yelp, I tried Holland Service. Trevor was really helpful, scheduling my job for the first available post-holiday slot. The job itself was done in a day, including installation of a guard to (hopefully) deter anyone who might think of helping himself to my new converter! All this for a very fair price. This could've be an easy time to get taken advantage of but an hour after I dropped of my car Chris called and let me know the breaks had a lot of useful life in them. I can easily trust this operation after that cause it would've set me back $300+ to replace those breaks. Christine was very attentive to my needs. I admit I had been shopping around getting price quotes on replacing a Serpertine belt. Prior to my call I wasn't in a good head space. The person whom I purchased the car from mentioned that the belt will probably be the next thing I would need to take care of. When I expressed concern, he said it wouldn't be something I would need to address anytime soon and can't imagine it to be more than a hundred or two to get work done. I didn't push for him to get it done before signing on the dotted line. He said wishful thinking when I asked him to help with expenses. Lesson learned. Anyhow, not in a good head space... Kristine gave me a quote for both, labor and the belt: $100.00. Also, on yelp they currently had a promotion: buy now for $50.00 and get a voucher valued at $75.00. Walked out paying $23.00 and change. One of the other quotes I got prior to committing to Holland Services was from Ocean works in Berkeley. They do good work and had gone to them multiple times. However, they quoted me $225.00 to $275.00. Wow!!! Too expensive!!! Part is about $30.00. My parents still take their car to Oceanworks. I feel they are getting the short end of the stick. Even if they believed they were or had been cheated, they wouldn't speak up or question it. They just pay the ticket. I was nervous to try a new place especially for car work. Happy I did. I gave five stars assuming nothing will go wrong with belt. They will be the first place to call for my next service. read more

Each time I told them what I thought needed to be done (like Diesel fuel filter replacement, alternator replacement), and each time that's exactly what they did, without trying to sell me on some other work. The young lady who runs the office is knowledgeable and professional, and takes care of a customer in a friendly and helpful way. The guy who runs the shop and/or does the work is efficient and communicative. He always calls me up to say what he's going to do and how much the estimate is, takes the truck for a spin if necessary, and calls as soon as he's finished. Jeff Holland is the most honest and forthright mechanic I have ever encountered. I have been taking my 1995 nissan pathfinder there for years. He gives advice and quotes...over the phone.
