Best eye dr in Santa Rosa, Stavan was my Doctor of Optometry for decades. His holistic approach to eye care leads to better care. I didn't know how good his was till I moved to LA, and had to try and find someone as good. Having a real doctor make, fill, verify, and fit your prescription makes a big difference, And it leads to better results with glasses. (You're less likely to experience eye stain, headache, and eye fatigue.) There is a decent selection of glasses, and the office is clean. He got me hooked on "flexon" style frames. Which can handle a beating, and are less likely to break. I can't imagine going back to "normal" glasses. If you haven't tried them. It's really worth trying them. read more

I found Dr. Stavn after careful search of a doctor that could fit for Ortho-keratology in Santa Rosa. Dr. Stavn is a methodical patient-centered doctor who seems to thrive on threading the needle for situations that require artful thought and precision. I must have seen him about 7 times through the Ortho-K fitment process - over about 6 months. I hardly ever had to wait when I arrived and his time with me was always taken with care attenting to the details. I appreciate this as I am detail oriented person. Speaking for my unique situation with an off-the-beaten path treatment plan, it has been a thoroughly satisfying experience dealing with him and his office. I can only imagine what takes to have a solo practice when most other eye doctors opt for herding throughput in a group office setting where shared resources make for an easier business model. That said, I guess I have even more respect for what Dr. Stavn has been able to accomplish - especially in this day and age. When my 5 year old son had his kindergarten eye check-up 11 years ago, we first went to a pediatric ophthalmologist. Without mentioning any names, it was a terrible experience. Bad exam, bad prescription. My son was walking into walls. A mother of one of his classmates told me about Hollis Stavn. What a different experience! Hollis took his time, was patient with my son and gave him the correct prescription and treatment. My son was seeing clearly for the first time in his life, thanks to Hollis Stavn. And Hollis convinced my son to start wearing a contact lens for better peripheral vision. He's been wearing his contact since he was 7 years old. He's now 16. Because of the great years of annual visits, he has become my eye doctor. I love coming to see him, because I get the full-on care. He is patient and really takes his time with each patient. I went for my eye exam some months back, and all I wanted was my prescription to order elsewhere. I did not appreciate the pushiness of the doctor to buy from him. He even had the front staff woman try to convince me. I found his approach and tone rude. Not only did I get a better price elsewhere, but I also did encounter any of the issues he claimed I would encounter if, I did not buy from him. He even called several days later to see how I was doing. His staff is very nice... And with COVID-19 on everybody's mind... Great eye doctor! I took my kids to him a few months back. My youngest son, now 13, 12 at the time, has autism and was having a very stressful time at the eye doctor as he did not want drops in his eyes. He was almost having a melt down as he did not want to be there as most autistic children have a hard time, but Doctor Hollis was so patient and understanding.. it takes a lot of patience to deal with people and children who have sensory issues!! I randomly saw Dr. Stavns office as I drove down Mendocino ave and decided to see if they were accepting new medi-cal patients, since I've been having trouble locating an eye doctor that took my insurance and had openings to see me. I was thrilled to hear they had an appointment within 2 weeks. The entire office is very friendly, and I thought Lindsey at the front desk was very sweet and helpful. Previously to coming to Optical fashions I went to my health care provider for my vision care. I was in and out in 15 minutes and never quite had the "perfect" prescription. When a friend referred me to Optical Fashions I went on her recommendations and had the very best experience. Dr. Stavn ran tests that the health care provider never did (and I felt they should have) and was so incredibly thorough. I had previously given this doctor's office one star. I returned today and saw Dr. Stavn and I have upgraded to four stars. As far as Dr. Stavn himself I considered five stars. My exam was extremely thorough and the glasses work very well for me. I suppose it could be a communication issue with the other staff because I definitely didn't seem to get my needs across. The staff is the doorway and the exit to and from the doctor and is very important in this kind of environment. The staff may need a little customer service training. As far as Dr. Stavn is concerned I will most likely give this another try when it is time for my next visit. read more

I was truly hoping for a good experience, having heard such positive things about Dr. Stavn. And, if getting the right prescription is all that matters, I guess he was OK. But why would the doctor not dilate my eyes, as I was a first time patient? It seems routine for an eye exam, even if not strictly required. But he didn't bother. And as I was leaving, he looked at my file and commented, "That's a rather odd name." At first, I found it amusing, and said, "Well, I had no choice in the matter." Then he asked, "Did you grow up on a commune?" Of course, he was joking, but after reflecting a while, I thought--how unprofessional, especially with a first-time patient you know nothing about. I wrote an email addressing my concerns, both for not dilating my eyes, and then his making odd comments about my name; Dr. Stavn responded quickly, saying he appreciates comments and criticism, and offered to set up another free appointment to dilate my eyes, if I wanted it. And then he simply wrote, "I apologize if you felt offended." To me, that is not an apology at all--but a lame excuse that shows no acknowledgement of his actions. Apologizing for the way someone else feels is not an apology, and he should know better. When I came a week later to pick up my glasses, he didn't recognize me, and asked my name, so I joked, "the odd one..." and he said, sounding annoyed, "Oh, I should have known." And that was that, no reference to his earlier comments. Who knows, maybe his lawyer told him he can never apologize for anything to avoid legal problems...but in this case, all he avoided was a good reference and future visits. read more

I will not be recommending this eye doctor to anyone based on my experience there. The other staff was friendly but Dr. Hollis' bedside manner left MUCH to be desired. He was very unpleasant and seemed to be annoyed with the type of insurance I had. I left the enital appointment upset and not wanting to return later to pick up my glasses but thankfully I did not see him again. Dr. Stavn has developed a new type of computer glasses. They are similar to progressive lenses, but specific to reading and working on the computer. Progressive lenses are great, but if you want to work on a computer monitor, you have to tilt your head way back. The glasses Dr. Stavn created for me made a big difference in my eye comfort while working at the computer and I no longer have to changes glasses between reading books and looking at the computer monitor. read more

Truth is, I don't think Dr Stavn's office is "busy". I got an apptmt only a couple of days out. I don't have issues, just needed a standard eye exam. It took an hour and a half. Do you think I'm complaining? Dr Stavn was thorough, patient, and complete in his evaluation. I thought I would take my prescription to Costco, but he encouraged me to have a look. I do have VSP and wound up with a better pair of specs at less money than at a discount retailer. I've read reviews where the writer really loves one or another office. Dr Stavn's office experience is not memorable, just efficient. If fashion eyewear is your thing, there may be more suitable choices. But if the health of your eyeballs and proper prescription and fitting of eyewear is near the top of your list, I recommend Dr Stavn. He's been at this quite a few decades and has absolutely state of the art testing equipment. Another reviewer commented about his genuine concern for your optical health and welfare. On June 30th, 2017, I took my two daughters 9 and 13 to Dr Hollis Stavn's practice, where we've never been before. Since he's never seen them, he decided to dialate their eyes. My 9 year old daughter was in the chair already, and my 13 year old was standing next to me. He brought out some eye drops and quickly told her my 9 year old "this is going to sting", then proceeded to put the eye drops in her eyes, without really explaining, or even giving her time to process what was just said. She got scared, and closed her eyes, (because he told her it would sting) and pulled back just a little. Dr. Stavn grabs my 9 year olds head, very hard, and yanks her head up and screams, "I don't have time for this, look up at the god damn ceiling. I will not tolerate this behavior". She was fighting back her tears, because it scared the crap out of her. Mine and 13 year olds, jaws dropped. Also, before our appointment, there was a woman and her son waiting to be seen. They called back the mother, and said that the little boy (probably 12) could come back after he used the machine on his mothers eyes. So they let him go back with his mom, and not even 5 minutes later, the little boy comes out almost crying, telling the receptionists that the doctor kicked him out. They sat there making excuse after excuse as to why he probably did it. The little boy had said, it was because he sneezed. I thought it was a little strange, but didn't think too much of it, until after our incident. If you have children, please do not bring them to Dr. Hollis Stavn practice, as he's not kid friendly. read more

Great office staff and customer service! I have two busy puppies and they got ahold of my glasses and broke them. I brought my broken glasses in to see if they could fix them, and within 5 minutes I had a brand new pair and they sent the broken one back to the company. They were so quick and happy to help. And then, two weeks later, my glasses got broken again- by the puppies- and yet again, the staff was ready to replace the glasses with a new pair, and fitted them to my face. Both times they were so efficient and helpful and pleasant. Also I will add that when I had purchased my glasses last year, they helped me pick out good frame styles and colors- I always get complicated on what nice frames I have. Thank you all. read more

Our family has only been seeing him for about 4-5 years now. Always pleasurable, professional and good service. I read the other negative reviews and can't imagine that it could even be possible to receive that kind of service from him. Makes me wonder if those are not plants. He is good at what he does and has all the right modern equipment, office set up nicely and he gives you his full attention. We have a decent vision plan and usually have a minimal amount out of pocket for upgrades like scratch protection. We keep our frame selections within the allotted allowance. His selection is just fine, they are glasses, other reviewer complaining about selection I am sure if you want some designer frames that he has plenty of catalogs for you to look through. To the other comment about getting a prescription and taking it elsewhere, the man needs to make a living you know, that is where the money is made. That is like taking your car to the dealer and getting it diagnosed and then taking it down the street to the independent repair shop to get it fixed because it is cheaper. That is just wrong.
