Their communication is terrible. They don't respond to calls and emails. They claim they are insured if they pack your fragile items. I had them pack some family antiques that were destroyed in the move. I filled out the insurance forms, had verification they were submitted probably. PLEASE, Read ALL the reviews and get a 2nd quote! I would NEVER use them again! If you choose to use them, get the Optional Option on Liability, NOT the Basic, which doesn't cover much. The owner, Carl, DOES NOT Explain the insurance and liability in detail so it's up to you to read ALL the fine print BEFORE YOU SIGN. Re-read the highlighted sections and words in red BEFORE you sign. Ask many questions! We spent over 18T to have them pack our house and move us from CA to AZ. DO NOT HIRE THEM TO PACK YOUR HOUSE!!! Pack yourself. It's worth the time. We had heard so many praises from friends and neighbors so I trusted them and hired Carls company. My mistake to trust! Now they say basically "too bad". "You signed on the dotted line for Basic Liability at .06/lb"which is basically $60 for all that was damaged! That won't even cover my one lamp they broke! This is a good one...day one, the packing crew drank MY Tequila in MY kitchen with MY cups and then stupid enough to leave the evidence behind!!! This is professional? NO! And none of my tequila bottles made it to AZ! Funny, but not. Also, the crew ate pistachios and as I unpacked, the shells are all over in the boxes. The list is too long of the major damages and broken dishes, art pieces, missing components, ruined clothes, gashes/scratches on furniture, mattresses damaged, etc. A lot of fragile items weren't packed right, so broken, yet on a non-breakable item, wrapped in 5-10 large pieces of packing paper. They waste a lot of packing material and you are charged for it. Beware of this. The packers literally threw in harsh chemicals on top (not on bottom of box) of our clothes (including WET Clothes I had just handwashed got packed? really?) and precious family photos in the same box together! One chemical opened and damaged all the above and soaked thru bottom of box on to floor. No Common Sense! They Did not mark boxes with "fragile" so MANY dishes broke. They lost key components to put items back together. Some of the crew worked hard and were professional but other crew members were disrespectful and not knowledgeable,or trained,on right way to pack boxes and loading the truck, so not to damage furniture. I do not recommend this company. Several pieces of antique furniture damaged. Left My brand new LG stainless steel refrigerator with permanent scratches from the straps they used. Huge marks across both doors & lost the tray for the ice maker. They used ( waisted) so much packing materials and left a mess. They left shells of Sunflower seeds all over. And one of the movers was very inappropriate...said I looked tired and offered to come back and give me a massage! Ugh! I called the company several times to express my concerns. No response. We recently moved from Gilroy to the mountains of AZ. This move was complicated because we needed storage. There were also a lot of fragile antiques, a grandfather clock, and tons of Lego bins. Despite having to put things in storage, the distance, and coming up a steep driveway at our new house there was almost no damage to anything. They may be a bit more expensive. However, if you need storage, have lots of fragile items, and are moving to a neighboring state, they are great. read more

I had my realtor recommend this company and Carl specifically. In the first place it was hard to get hold of him but finally he came over and did complete inventory and told me that he would have moving quote ready once he returns from his trip in couple weeks. We were not in a hurry so I wasn't worried. Month went by and still nothing. I have been asking for the quote now for over three months and I don't even get a reply from Carl. His assistant is more than helpful returning my emails but he is useless as far as getting something to you on timely manner. If I could do a zero I would!! The entire story is too long to post, but the bottom line is just DON'T USE THEM! I paid a lot of $$ to have them move me to Wyoming. They either broke or 'lost' everything that I own. They have ignored my phone calls, emails and even a letter from an attorney requesting that they respond to the claim that I filed w/ them. Their 'insurance' obviously means nothing. Their statements about they'll 'take care of you' also obviously mean nothing. I'm sure Carl believes that because I'm out of state I can't do anything. Well, I may not be able to get anything done in CA, but I'm filing a complaint w/ the FMCSA and will write negative reviews on every possible site that I can find to keep them from doing this to anyone else! I have worked with Carl and/or his employees for many years. It's a commercial hire, so I am not responsible for that aspect, but I am on the receiving end of the delivery, and have witnessed their quality, friendliness, and flexibility year after year. He orchestrates these massive deliveries, and when life inevitably throws curveballs or some of the volunteers on our receiving team make the employees lives a little harder, they are always patient, and work to clear up any confusion or swiftly rectify inevitable errors. They took great care to protect our furniture and other belongings both loading and unloading. The guys helped place our furniture and if it had to be reassembled they went out of their way to make sure it was correct. Placed boxes in the correct locations especially the heavy ones. I tried to support the local team with my move and greatly regret doing so. On the day of the move the team arrived short at least one planned laborer so they quickly found themselves behind schedule. It was a local move, so this led to a late start unloading at the new home. I ended up having to help unload and they still worked well past midnight. The team did not use any protective coverings, so there wasn't a corner or doorframe that wasn't scratched or needed repainting. They reassembled a bed incorrectly (which later collapsed when a house guest used it). When leaving they drug the lift gate of the truck down the driveway (causing gashes), drove through and damaged a retaining wall and irrigation system, then backed over the mailbox. The claims process took months and they low-balled the repairs claiming no need to fix the driveway since there were other blemishes on it. I've decided it's not worth my time to go to small claims court, but would highly discourage anyone from utilizing their services. read more

Used them twice. My local Salinas to Salinas move was great. My Salinas to Ripon, CA...not so great. I discovered the next day the workers broke two of the four bed frames which were wood leg supports on one bed upstairs and one bed downstairs, and stacked the pieces in neat little piles under the beds. Unfortunately, I couldn't watch everything they did and I never thought to look under a beds. I tipped the crew very generously before I knew. The next day when I called to alert the office Patty told me I could file out the 0.60/lb. they were responsible for. An apology or a follow up call from mgmt would have been nice. read more

I decided to book this company for my in town (Hollister) move based solely on price. I noticed the bad Yelp reviews and I actually discussed it with the owner (Doug) before hand. I was worried based on the Yelp reviews, but went with the cheaper option against my normal better instincts. I was given a fair flat-price estimate, something that I can't say for the other three moving companies I called. With the others, I may have had to pay several hundreds of dollars more at the end of the day. Three guys and a truck showed up promptly on the date of my move. They immediately made contact with me and after a walk through, started placing protective film and boards around my home. They wrapped every item carefully. never complained or gave me any sort of attitude even once during the day. I think they only stopped once for a 15-20 minute lunch break. The guys even moved a large air hockey table up to my second floor without as much as a tiny complaint about it. The move took a few hours longer than I was quoted, but that wasn't a concern for me since I had a locked-in flat rate. I feel I got more value than what I was charged. They provided free wardrobe boxes for our clothes. I also have to say that this was the first time I've ever used a moving company without having a single item broken. No dings in the wall, no scratches on the floor, no dirt on the floor/carpet...these boys really went the extra mile for me and I couldn't be more thankful. Very hard workers with their leader keeping them on task all day. Called my Wife and I "Sir" and "Ma'am" all day without fail. I liked them so much that I called the owner at the end of the day to compliment his workers professionalism and respect shown towards my home and my family. We gave the three workers a nice tip at the end of the day even though it was not expected or asked for. I almost had to chase them down to give them a thank-you tip. That says a lot about them in my opinion. I realize that every person may have a different experience with a company and I'm not trying to invalidate their bad experience. Carl, Patty and the moving team did a fabulous job. We started talking to them about 6 weeks before our move, Carl came out and walked through the house and was very personable. He let me know he had a few family commitments and would get me the quote in a week, this was totally fine for us since we planned on getting several quotes done. Hollister was priced quite a bit less than the big movers, since they used their own truck and were only moving us. Plus we just had a really good feeling about them. Moving day came, it was 100 degrees and the team worked tirelessly until everything was loaded. The truck arrived at our new house 4 days later and unloaded quickly. They asked questions when they needed to and put everything they had initially taken apart, back together. Nothing was broken. I wasn't able to get Carl to even come out for 2 1/2 weeks. He finally came about 2 weeks before my move date. Came on a Tuesday, was supposed to have an estimate on Thursday, nothing by Saturday afternoon, so I had to get another company at the last minute. Highly recommended by my realtor, who is now aware I had no mover less than a week away. Completely unreliable. I was told Friday afternoon that he was "in Pebble Beach" and would work on the estimate when he got home. I guess I'm just small potatoes. If he didn't want to take the job, just say so. read more

We moved in September of 2017 we purchased insurance to cover any items that may get damaged. we had multiple items that were either torn, bent, scratched and broken. we filed a claim and have yet to see a dime! We used this company on the recommendation of a friend. The owner's wife came out to our house and discussed with us every item we wanted moved. Doug (the owner) emailed us a guranteed not to exceed proposal which we quickly signed and sent back. The day of the move we had a 3 man crew. They were prompt, polite, efficient and FAST!! They wrapped all the mattresses in a bag before taking them out to the truck. They disasembled and reasembled the bed frames. They took special care to wrap each piece of glass individually with pads and shrink wrap. I felt bad for them going up and down the stairs all day but they never stopped. We had some really expensive and heavy furniture that we were concered with getting down the stairs. Not only did they pad the furniture itself, they padded the banister and the door jamb to ensure no damage. They asked where to place every piece of furniture in the new house. They cleaned up their mess as they unwrapped and took all the trash with them. They stayed on task all day. Not once did I see any of them look at their phone. None of them complained or slacked off in any way. I was amazed at their pace. They are rockstars. These guys are over the top great! They moved us out of a three story Condo on Beach Hill into our new house in Seabright in one day! The stair wells were skinny and steep, the access for the truck was limited and the largest pieces of furniture were on the top floor. The crew showed up and covered the floors and stairs with protection and proceeded to pack and wrap and pad and hustle to my hearts delight. It went perfect. nothing damaged or missing including both the condo and the house. Doug and Olivia were fantastic to work with and everything they said was right on. Our move was to another state, it turned out to be a nightmare, I would not recommend this company. They delivered our stuff three weeks late after the supposed delivery date, failed to communicate during that three week delay, they promised and charged for a whole truck but room was saved for someone else's goods, then they kept some of our stuff, repeatedly claiming everything was delivered, finally they admitted stuff was still on the truck. HM&S was referred to us by a relative who had used them twice before. Moving is stressful and hard enough as it is. Carl and his team made moving easy. Hiring them was the best money we ever spent. They are courteous with your belongings and efficient with time management. The movers are a tight knit team and look like they are having fun and enjoy doing what the are doing. They didn't break or damage a thing. MH&S will come out and asses the job first and also make contingency plans incase of bad weather, we moved in the winter. You will get a quote with a min and max amount which is a good thing and might cause sticker shock at first. But remember, moving is hard work and your cost depends on how prepared you are on moving day. They will explain every service and cost. Other outfits will quote you less even without inspecting the job. Their quote was spot on and they completed our move as quoted, even saving us money. Hollister Moving & Storage are true professionals. They show up on time, prepared, and ready to work. They also take donations for a program to help women transition from shelters. I was so excited to work with this local business to move my piano. We would definitely have been given them more business later too! Too bad Patty was so crabby. I would first like to say thank you to the wonderful, nice man that spoke with me yesterday, Tuesday January 23 (unfortunately I forgot his name.) He was nice, wrote down my contact information and dimensions, and said Patty would call me back first thing in the morning. He was great and gave wonderful customer service! Too bad that he isn't the receptionist! Patty, the receptionist is not as easy to speak with. I am new to this and didn't know to measure every doorway and the piano. She was condescending and spoke to me like I was an idiot for not knowing to do that. I honestly had no idea. I looked past that though, got the measurements, and called back. She gave me a quote of 3 hours, 3 guys, $190 per hour. I waited and waited for a call from her and had my husband follow-up today. During that call she told my husband that their minimum was 4 hours and that the price would go up $190. This is a single move of a baby grand piano and is 16 miles from Gilroy to Hollister.....okay. She promised that she would call back after 3:30PM once she confirmed our date with the owner. 4:30 rolls around, still no call from Patty so my husband called back and asked for the owner. She said that he wasn't in and was very short with him when he asked when he would be back. She huffed and said "He's not coming back at all. Can I take a message." At this point, she had raised her voice with him. I was with him, he wasn't mad or impolite but she sure was. Treat me like garbage-okay. Treat my sweet, soft-spoken husband like that-no way! We found a different PROFESSIONAL piano mover in Gilroy. Oh and they were half the price, laughed when they heard that this place demanded the measurements of every door, and were more than happy to have our business. read more

Three movers (Jessie and 2 other gentlemen) packed my mom's house in Morgan Hill and loaded everything into their truck. They went above and beyond to carefully and thoughtfully pack her items. They were on time, efficient, hard-working, easy to work with. Jessie drove her belongings to a storage unit in San Diego. He arrived in San Diego on time, and called me when he said he would so I could meet him at the Self Storage property. He did the moving into the storage unit all by himself, like the Hulk! He took great care and worked very hard to load the items into the unit so we could access them, if necessary. He did this without us asking him to and his extra effort will make my mom's life easier--for that I am grateful! They made a hard move very easy for my family. If I could give zero stars, I would. Run, run fast away from this company. Once they get you quoted and you sign on the dotted line, all bets are off. We had to look online to find a number to reach Carl Freese because he NEVER returned any of the messages we left at the office. Six numbers later we finally got ahold of him. Julie, the office gal, is horrible. She lied to us, interrupted frequently and was just very rude and inhospitabl. Carl was either not there, or busy or on vacation. The guys packing our stuff broke a platter on the first day and didn't tell me. The only way I found out was cleaning up the mess they left and it was stuffed in one of the tape boxes they were using for garbage. I had asked for full value insurance and Julie never sent me the paperwork. I did not know it had to be done prior to loading because Julie never got back to me. Fortunately I have awesome homeowners insurance. They did not check or tell me there was oil in a small fryer and packed it, badly, because the oil leaked out. The box was ruined but was on some paper padding they had put on the floor. But that box dripped oil for days and I had to wash everything in the box and repack it. Good thing because they packed terrible. I took over packing the kitchen stuff. They tried to gouge us on the hours and supplies. I noted the time they arrived, took lunch, departed and how many guys were there. Carl also kept changing rates on the quotes since he had to redo them so many times because I was not going to pay for what we did not get. Our friend had a 52' racing trailer so we got our stuff out of HM&S warehouse and good riddance. They were going to charge us over $50k to move our stuff to Louisiana. Our friend charged much less and we were happy to pay. We hired a local moving company to unload the truck and they were awesome. The nice thing about Hollister Moving and Storage is Patti. She has a wonderful attitude and keeps this business afloat I've given them a very low rating because businesses should not just be good when things go right...but also when they go wrong. They should have processes that take into account the unexpected. For example something being broken in the move. This was my unfortunate experience with Carl and what I believe must be his company. I've used them twice and on the second occasion they broke my dining room table chairs arm completely off, as well as a finial on an expensive bedroom set. This was on July 7th. I never got a phone call that said, "We are sorry that happened and will make it right", nor did they keep me posted on the progress. All my calls to Carl went unanswered , leaving poor Patti trying to figure out what to do. I made over 20 phone calls during the course of three months and a half months and was told countless stories of where in the process the repairs were. I would never use this company again, nor recommend them to any of my friends. Companies need to be able to handle simple issues like this in a professional manner. When you move,it's not unusual to have something scratched or broken, it is unusual for no one to care at the company, and take over three and one half months to do a simple repair. Not to mention never making a single phone call saying they were sorry and they were trying to make it right. There are far better moving companies out there. read more

We completed our second move using Hollister Moving and Storage on 11/21/14. The gentleman that helped us were all very courteous and respectful of us and our things. The crew leader took the time to sit down and go over all of the costs with me on the day of the move. They were careful to explain that our quote was an amount that was not to be exceeded even if the move took longer than expected. In the end they worked so hard that I actually saved $300 off the quote. All of our things were moved and nothing was damaged. I hope that we wont have to move again for a really long time, but if we do I will definitely use HM&S again. read more

Warning: Stay away from this company. We wasted a whole day driving and waiting. We hired them to move some training equipment. They were going to call 1 hour in advance before they came. We called to check, and confirmed again that they would call 1 hour before they came. All of a sudden they call, and say they are at the house, and ask where we are. We tell them it is a one hour drive, and we will be there in one hour. When we arrive, they are gone. Now it is impossible to call them on their cellphones. Only voice-mail. read more

Hollister M&S recently moved us from San Jose to Scotts Valley, with a very slim timeline. We have a tricky driveway at our new house but they came prepared! They brought a second, smaller truck that they used to relay our items up the driveway and the full move for a 4 bedroom house was fully completed by 6:30pm. Do not use Hollister Moving and Storage. Sadly, we used them in August to move from Aptos to Henderson, NV. They broke several items - the priciest of which were a mirror worth $350.00 and a chinese statue worth $3,500.00 Total claim - $3,850.00. We sent a completed claim form with the applicable receipts as they requested. We followed up with phone calls and were promised that a proposal would be sent to pay the claim by the Office Manager, Patty Drost. She kept telling us that her boss and owner, Carl Freese, had to complete the review and send the proposal. After months of phone calls on our part, Patty finally told us that Carl was not going to respond.
