I came to Holly's twice in rapid succession not too long after moving to Charlottesville, then they closed down (?) temporarily for renovations, and I was never sure what was actually going on. ("There's someone smoking outside, is it open? The sign says closed?") This dragged on for a few months, then finally they were clearly re-open! But I heard things had changed, so I was slightly hesitant to go back in case the Holly's I fell in love with was now a tattered dream. After some new reviews rolling in, I decided it was worth the trip back. It looks super nice and clean inside now! It was admittedly slightly dingy before, so way to go, Holly's. It seems like they still need to add some lighting; once the sun went down we were basically in darkness at our table. There was a fixture connection hanging empty above us, so I assume they are still adding things and finishing things up slowly. We were there on Thursday's "game meet-up," where the gamers of Cville crawl out from their holes and head to Holly's for a pint and a game or two with like-minded folks and friends. Our group, a party of five, came together and sat at a table to play our own game. It's a fun environment when the beer is flowing and all the tables around you are filled with various board games (think: catan, ticket to ride, pandemic, and many others I've never heard of). There was only one waitress who was also on the bar, so she was worked off her butt and would have benefitted immensely from even one other person to help. But because we had our game going, the slow service wasn't too much of an issue. Unfortunately my beloved, bigger than my head Club sandwich is off the menu, and they've streamlined their sides service with the sandwiches now, so you always get a side salad and fries unless you ask otherwise I guess. I got the reuben and it was huge, stuffed full, and delicious. I felt like the melty cheese wasn't as present as it could have been, but it was still good. The side salad is meager, but I'm always thankful for fresh greens when eating greasy sandwiches, so no complaints. The fries were hot and delicious. My husband got the BLTA, (a blt with avocado) and it was also huge and looked great. Definitely something I'd think about ordering another time, once I know tomatoes are in season. So, to wrap things up. Some menu changes left me a bit sad, but what they are delivering is still tasty and still priced fair especially for the portion you get. The service is friendly and the renovations made a nice difference. Still looks like a dive from the outside, but inside it's clean and tasteful. The bathroom upgrade is especially welcome and appreciated. Go. Avoid Thursday if you don't want to be crowded by gamers, or go on Thursday if you're into that. I assume other week nights aren't quite as hopping. Glad I finally returned to Holly's! read more

A nice place for food and drinks. Their happy hour goes until 8 and features 2 dollars off of any draft beer among other discounts. The renovations look good on Holly's and it has a cozy feel now. I tried the veggie quesadilla and thought it was delicious. Overall, there is a lot to recommend Holly's and I will definitely be back. read more

This spot is a hidden gem. They have happy hour from 3-9pm ($3.50 beers, $4 glasses of wine, $2.25(?) rails). There is a nice selection of draft beers on tap and the wine list has options ranging from your typical reds, to rosè if you wanted something lighter. The food was surprisingly fantastic! Great deal and LARGE portions. I got the meatloaf sandwich which was the special that night for $6, which included fries and a side salad. I mean it was a bargain. If this was anywhere else it would be at least $13-15! Really great quality food. I'd highly suggest the reuban sandwich, which my husband got. Apparently we got the last sandwich of the night? That I found odd that there was a finite number of reubans. So keep that in mind if you come later in the day! Special shoutout to the bartender! She was the only person servicing the entire place (tables and bar). There was at least 40 people there and she managed to get everyone's order timely and accurately. A hidden gem for sure. The food was so good we got 3 appetizers (the cornbread included) and the meatloaf. The drinks were super cheap too they have all day happy hour on some draft beers too. The food was delicious and the staff was super nice, I don't know what happened but after I ate I went home and slept for 13 hours straight! Brunch at Holly's will bring you right back to the days of La Taza in Belmont. Same chefs and same great Mexican inspired breakfast food(tacos, burritos, chilaquilles,Huevos rancheros etc.). The diner was crowded when we visited and expectably our order took a bit, but well worth the wait. Delicious food all around, perfectly cooked eggs, and their homemade hot sauce is awesome. We are from out of town. Our daughter lives in walking distance of Holly's and we have watched the turnover. The new owners have made this place a very favorite of ours! We actually like it better than some of the other 4-5 star restaurants in the area that we used to go to. It's our new favorite for so many reasons. Great ambiance. Great service. Great unique menu. A hidden gem of Charlottesville! Delicious food in a quirky, fun, intimate environment. The waitstaff are wonderful. A lot of variety on the menu - something for everyone. We were a group of four, and everyone's food was delicious. Particular favorites include brussels sprout hash, rueben, jalapeño poppers, and cornbread, and the bread pudding a la mode is incredible. Best Food in Town for the Price. We live 1/2 mile from Holly's and visit 4 times a week. When one of our favorite restaurants closed, Robert was smart to grab their chef, because he is amazing. The place is a great "dive" with a wonderful staff and great food for a great price. A bit disappointed that brunch hasn't come back yet, but certainly look forward to that. Went tonight with my son, his fiancée and a family friend. Drinks were on point. Although the menu isn't huge the options were all so tempting it was hard to choose. We started with crispy brussel sprouts and fried green tomatoes. The sprouts were cooked to perfection, crispy and tasty. Fried green tomatoes had a delicious corn meal breading and were topped with a delicious fresh salsa. I had the smoked pork burrito with puréed black beans. The smokiness of the meat was heavenly, tortilla lightly crunchy , rice, tomatoes, cilantro lime crema all danced happily in my mouth for a delicious dinner. Puréed black beans were nicely seasoned and paired perfectly with the burrito. Other meals ordered at the table were smoked pulled pork sandwich, fried baloney and a hangover burger. I cannot day enough good things about little place. I'm not sure when they opened but since discovering them in July, I've been several times. First, huge delicious sandwiches and mountains of home cut fries $8! Second, the food is fucking delicious. Third, or maybe first, ever since La Taza cafe closed I have ached over the loss of the best Chilaques in the world. But wait!!! Jorge, the chef here, was at La Taza. And his chilaquiles are still so fine. Recommend huge BLT with fried green tomatoes. Buffalo chicken wrap, and chilaquiles of course. Don't let the rather plain exterior fool you. Holly's is a good deal on great food. After passing by for ages, I stopped in one night to hear a music show and got something to eat while I waited. I absolutely love this place. The staff is friendly, everything is delicious, and it's so affordable. They're also incredibly welcoming and tolerant. An order of potato salad and an order of chips were missing, there was no chili on a chili dog, two pickles were missing, and a sandwich ordered with no onions/peppers came with both (it was noted in two places on the order form). I just waited 1 hour 45 minutes for this dive to deliver my food. That's ridiculous. Their food isn't bad at all but strangely priced and their delivery method needs to be rebuilt. For example, if you order a sandwich the added soup is $3. If you don't, the same size soup is $4.49. If you order a dog or a brat, like I did tonight, it's still $4.49 although I sorta thought brats were like a sandwich. Ordered buffalo wings and fries using grubhub. The buffalo wings were very salty and did not actually taste like buffalo wings. It had an unpleasant buttery, greasy flavor to it. The fries looked like leftover fries from the end of the night and they were also salty and soggy. Would not recommend at all. read more

Even though it's been a while, most people don't realize Holly's was significantly updated inside sometime ago. New decor, updated flooring and walls, and new lights really freshened up the place. The menu remains great. Big, delicious sandwiches, daily specials, and even slices of pie make their way onto the chalkboard. The bartender Jess is one of the best in the business - friendly, attentive, and with a memory like a steel trap. Go there once, and she'll never forget your drink order. Don't be fooled by the exterior anymore. Inside is warm and welcoming. Come watch the game, bring the kids for a bite, or belly up to the bar. Oh, and did I mention the prices? Went to Holly's with a friend for lunch. Only one other diner in the place at the time. We ordered a appetizer, a burger,and s cheese steak. Call me crazy but shouldn't the appetizer come out before the entree? Well the fried pickles came out after we were almost finished with our entrees. The burger looked about average for the price. The main problem was with the cheesesteak for a price of more than $7 I expected a decent size sandwich. Total length was about 4" with barely enough meat to even cover the bun. For that price and that size I would expect the best cheesesteak in the world, but this one was just unremarkable. If you are looking for a good cheesesteak I recommend jersey mikes Stay away from holly's I expect it will will be gone soon as we're the rest of the sub par Restaurants that tried to make it in this location. read more

I ordered a ruben with macaroni salad as the side and upgraded chips to fries... the ruben was dry, the macaroni salad was soup and the fries were brown, stale and desiccated. Even my boyfriend, who normally kills my fries for me, couldn't. We ended up throwing most of it in the trash. read more

Alright, let me break this down for y'all. We ordered from my office, the order totaled 8 people. These people had the audacity to call us up and be like, "Oh we usually need you to call ahead 24 hours for orders this big". Yeah so if we had all rolled up and sat at a table, y'all wouldn't be able to help us? If anything y'all have more time to cook the food. Next, We called for this order at 11am for a 12pm lunch time. We did not receive our food until 2pm. Now I'm not going to even consider blaming the Orderup driver because even he wasn't ready for the blasphemy that we encountered at this place. Alright, so then everything is fine right because got our food. NAH, this place tried to give us some cold food too, not only did they have HOURS to make it and get it to us, they decided, "Hey we already ruined the timing and composure of their lunch, let's stack some more on top of that and give them food from last week." "Oh and that soda that you ordered? Who needs it? Certainly not the paying customer. Let's forget that from the order as well." And I'll give them that people have enjoyed the sandwiches that they ordered, maybe only content from having had waited 3 hours so that'd they find garbage appetizing at that point. But NAH, these people give me these overpriced "chicken wings", which were the second grossest set of wings I've been served at restaurant. The wing was more fat than meat and yeah they snatched these things off the most obese and growth stunted chicken they could find. These things weren't bigger than my thumb, but sure 6 tiny wings for 10 bucks including delivery fee and tip and what not. On top of that gnarly meat situation they threw at me, they decided to be artistic and give me deconstructed wings. Legit had the buffalo sauce in a cup on the side like I was eating chicken tenders or something. And that ranch you ordered? You don't need that ranch either because how would even use that with your buffalo wing dippers that you were so graciously given. I went their for lunch. Had a corned beef Reuben with fries and coleslaw. It was the best Reuben I have had since I can remember. I am a big eater, and it was a struggle to finish it all. Loads of corned beef on marbled rye. The fries were good as well as the coleslaw. One of the owners, Chuck waited on me and was very attentive and friendly. The prices were very reasonable. It took almost 2 hours to get my order. I order from this deli via Order Up. I always get the club sandwich (avail on several breads; I chose marble rye). It has several slides of freshly roasted turkey, several slices of quality ham, and slightly sweet bacon, with good lettuce leaves (not iceburg), fresh tomato, and cheese. It is exactly what a club sandwich should be. And it is HUUUUGE. Two people could easily share it, and honestly three to four small people would do fine with one order if they also had some chips. And it comes with chips, about twice as many as in a snack-size bag. You have a few sides to choose from (I picked macaroni salad, which was bland). For a few bucks extra you can get hand-cut fries (I did one time but they didn't survive the 2-mile delivery trip without getting soggy.) My iced tea was delicious--freshly brewed, not from concentrate, and "light on the ice," as I requested. I'm grumpy because the forgot the pickle I specifically selected on the Order Up form. But I forgive them because seriously, this is the PERFECT club sandwich. read more
