I'd been going to Bark N Purr since I was a kid, however so much has changed there. I understand trying to meet the depend of the ever growing neighborhood around you, but I feel like they have missed the mark on where they started. They used to have a very down-home and happy vibe, now they seem so uppity. I feel like I've been judged for things that I'm buying (and no, it's not low cost crappy food!) and I feel ignored. I also have been given miss information from the staff. I understand that they receive much of their information from their sales reps, but it's biased and that should be taken into consideration on their end. I love shopping local, and would love to return to the store I grew up with, but I think I'll stick to Tomilinson's. **Notice, I'm not being rude, nor am I trying to start any kind of argument. Sadly, since being purchased by an out-of-state chain, this store has done nothing but go downhill. (It wasn't THAT great to begin with, but it had "Local" going for it.) Since the buyout, it seems that they know not how to stock the store. They never have the Primal canine formula that I used to buy there on a REGULAR BASIS. I don't know what the problem is, but I've had to go elsewhere on *numerous* occasions. So much so, that I plan to head DIRECTLY over to T*mlinson's the next time I need to re-stock. Whenever possible, I will avoid big box stores and shop only at local, or at the very least, locally responsible stores. Bark 'N Purr is a great local pet shop! My partner and I have taken our pugs there for pet food, baths, and the very important Furminator, since we moved into the neighborhood (Brentwood). They have a very large selections of dog foods of all types, toys and collars, leashes and harnesses. Yesterday, we stopped by with our pugs to buy a big bag of diet dog food and also ended up with a great harness for our chunky pug. We previously looked for a harness at a pet shop on 2nd street, but didn't find anything that seemed right for under $40! We found the perfect blue harness for less than $20 at Bark 'N Purr. Great find! I have always had good experience from the guys behind the counter and the groomer. My only complaint is that they close at 7pm! During the spring/summer, 7pm just seems too early! It's still light outside for another hour or so...and I'm in much more of a mood to shop for pet supplies....but that's just me. :) read more

Okay...so I have only been here once. My dog and kitten (the ones in my picture) won a pet of the week contest and we got a gift certificat eto Bark 'N Purr. So, I loaded up one day and made the drive from South Austin to North Austin to visit the store. I ended up getting an extrememly cute Longhorn collar for my lab and some food for my kitten. I actually thought the staff was pretty friendly...even a little flirty. So all of you that have had a bad experiece there, maybe give it one more shot. Maybe the employee that was rude or unhelpful was having a crappy day. Their products are nice, and what you bring home to your pet is the most important thing...right? My background: I am not your typical disgruntled, misinformed customer. I have been working as a veterinary technician for 2 years and have a bachelor's degree in biology. I know how to take care of animals. Pros: For being an independently owned pet store, Bark 'N Purr has an admirable selection of food and toys. The store is clean and organized. You can also go online and order food to be delivered to your house. This is very convenient, especially if you work nights and are unable to purchase your pet food during regular business hours. Cons: The staff member I interacted with (male, late 30's, bald) was rude and aggressive. I left the store feeling extremely embarrassed with tears in my eyes. I went to check out with a bag of science diet and the staff member spoke to me like I was an idiot because I picked the "absolute worst!" brand they carried. The man proceeded to tell me a lot of incorrect information about pet food nutrition. After lecturing me at high volume for several minutes, in front of all the other customers mind you, he finally ended his rant long enough to help me pick out a different bag of food. When I inquired about switching my kitten's food too suddenly off science diet, he said "they should be fine, kittens are really resilient." I wanted to tell him that half the diarrhea cases we see at the hospital are because of a sudden change in diet. I also wanted to tell him he is not a licensed veterinarian and should not be endangering the health of his customers' pets by giving them bad advice. Instead, I was too busy trying not to cry in front of everyone so I kept my mouth shut and left. If you decide you want to give this place business, i'd advise doing it online so you don't subject yourself to being humiliated by the staff members of Bark 'n Purr. Bark 'N Purr has been the place where we get food for our dog for the last year. The reason we stared shopping at Bark 'N Purr is that they carry the raw food diet that my dog requires for the allergies she has. They also carry a wide variety of toys, supplies, and goodies for all kinds of pets. I occasionally buy cat food here as well but its much more pricey than at Sam's or some of the other places you can buy this type of thing in bulk. Overall the people are nice, friendly and helpful. Love this store. They carry stuff that is a little higher end than your usual chain pet store, but everything in there seems a little more unique and durable as well. We've bought raw cat food here in the past for our kitty with a troublesome stomach. Today we bought a whole myriad of cat toys for our rambunctious kitten. So far 3 of the 4 are a complete hit (the 4th is still squirreled away for another day). Staff is friendly and there is a large selection of foods for both dogs and cats. I give Bark 'n Purr an okay service review. I go here as a back up to another local small doggy business, the hours fit my schedule a little better. I have to agree with others about the customer service, the guys behind the counter don't seem to ask you if you need help unless you approach the counter. I normally know what i'm looking for, but don't always know where stuff is located, I have to ask. No biggie. They are helpful and know products, but knowledge of products isn't the best i've seen by my regular doggie boutique. I also don't like having to drive half hour away from my home to get here, but like I said it's a back up store and I appreciate the open hours on Sundays. read more

Drove by this store for years but thought it would be too expensive. Finally went in on Saturday because of ad in weekly paper. Ugh! They didn't carry the item that was pictured n the paper -- 50 ct XL Simple Solution potty pads. Only carries 10 count. Even their web site says they are in stock but I asked 2 different clerks and was told no to the 50 count. Ended up getting 4x10 packs for about $28 when I went in for 2x50 for $26 (advertised sale). Positive: They carry top brands, healthy brands. You can probably find what you need in terms of top food and health brands. Negative: Pricing! First, you are lucky if you can actually find a price -- or a correct price. At least 1 out of 4 items picked off of shelves did not have a price tag. Many items on the shelves had shelf tags. Some were tagged above product; some under product - so you had to really read the tags to find the correct one. Many products were just near their tag. A tag might be listed for the smallest (or largest) size of product but not for both sizes. Clerks need to come out from behind counter and do some serious shelf cleaning and price marking!!!! read more

What I love best about Bark n' Purr is the vast selection of leashes and collars in ANY COLOR you could possibly want. This store has a good selection of products (though I disagree with mixing bad foods like Science Diet in with all the great holistic brands as I think it sends the wrong message that those are good foods) but their service is not very good. I was calling around for prices on kibbles and the guy told me that they were busy and that I would have to call back some other time. I understand being busy, but take my name and number and offer to call me back. That is just good customer service. I called another place, Just for Pets, and they took all the time I wanted to talk to me about their products, prices, etc. Bottom line, I used to shop at Bark and Purr all the time but when I can get the same products at a store with much better and more personalized customer service at Just for Pets, I'll drive the extra distance to do it. read more

This is a great place if you are looking for high-quality pet food. If you are looking for friendly customer service however, be prepared. Otherwise I might give 4 stars. But seriously, these people have not one clue about how to treat customers. It's really quite strange. In spite of this fact, I have gone there for nearly 10 years and will continue to go there as long as I can afford it. (We have five cats, so buying super premium food for all of them can get a bit expensive.) They are not rude exactly, but they definitely are not friendly either. And you would think a long time customer might get at least a "hello, how are you doing?" when walking in the door, but no. If there were another place in town that carried the same stuff but was friendlier, I would gladly go there instead, even if it meant driving farther. read more

i come here to grab gourmet treats to tide my two furry guys over until the online orders come in. this place stocks a good variety of dog treats, food, and toys but at a price. you can definitely find about 80% of everything they carry online for 15-20% less (most sites offer free shipping, promos, and charge no tax). parking is never a problem and my encounters with the staff are usually satisfactory. no one goes out of their way to offer assistance but the staff is well-informed. i find their toy selection most-impressive. read more

A few days ago I heard what sounded like a baby kitten underneath my house's foundation. After spending hours trying to coax it to safety, I was finally successful. It appeared to be one week old and abandoned by it's mother. It's eyes were not even opened yet. I took it to the vet hospital and they suggested I feed it solid food, even though that's premature, because they didn't have formula in stock. I bought 6 cans of solid kitten food as suggested by the vet. The next couple of days, the kitten became severely dehydrated, losing weight, and couldn't stand up. I was sure he was dying. I returned to the same vet hospital this morning (Sept. 26, 2012) for more help. They again gave me cat food, but suggested I go to Petco and buy formula and try that. I asked for local stores instead of Petco because I had not much time, and they suggested Bark N Purr. Upon arrival at Bark N Purr, I met the owner Eddie, a sales associate, and the most incredible customer by the name of Bonnie, who I think might be an angel. Bonnie told me exactly what formula to buy, how to administer it to the kitten using a bottle, and all of them were incredibly helpful in teaching me how to keep my new kitten alive. I wanted to share this experience because I give Bark N Purr 100% credit in saving my kitten's life and teaching me how to be a good kitty parent. Kind of hit and miss for me. Sometimes I go in and everyone is nice, sometimes it's like I'm bothering them just by being in the store--I hate that kind of inconsistency. Anyway, it's local, it's fine, it's got some stuff you can't find at the big box pet stores. I just wish I was more drawn to it as I do like to shop local. Was going to shop on the web site but none of the product photos show up on Chrome browser, but they do on Explorer....again, hit and miss. I like this store. They know how to treat priceless pets. I love the delivery feature; however, I found the service neglectful. No one asked if I needed assistance and I counted three sales people and two customers, one of which was me. And I really could have used some advice given the plethora of pet food offerings they have available and that I have never seen at a Pet Smart, Unleashed, or grocery store. I would have liked to have known the features of the brands and what they suggested and why. Oh well, I give them a four for offering the best selection of dog food to be found on the planet and they deliver. I think I'll just order online in the future since the customer service is absent in person anyway. not a huge selection of things you can find for cheaper elsewhere except for some cool toys and other accessories i haven't seen in the chain stores. someone told me that the service was great here, but they ignored me, until i got to the counter to pay. then they were all uber critical about the food i was buying--like i would be poisoning madison with it. they tried to upsell me to something way more expensive and were not very nice about it. the food i do buy is not purina! look, if i had a problem and was asking for advice, that's one thing, but to be super snooty about me buying something from your store--that's another. customer service counts, people. read more

I love Bark n Purr and have shopped here for years. The quality of the products is high and the customer service is fantastic! In fact, several years ago, they even let my 9-year-old daughter set up a little table outside of the store to do research for a science fair project on whether owners choose dogs who look like themselves. (According to the research, the answer is yes, they do!) I haven't noticed any change in the quality of the products, service, or staff since the store changed hands. One thing they do stress now, however, is that if you buy a toy or product and your pet doesn't like it, you can return it for a full refund. Pretty nice! read more

excellent selection of high quality pet foods, treats, toys and furniture/accessories. excellent selection of medium quality items mentioned above, too - the high end of medium, that is. fair prices. we purchased a HUGE dog bed from them and it is really fantastic quality. we complained about the price ($200+) but i did some research and it was more or less the mean price of all places that sell the same bed. the only turn off i had was when i came to check out their selection, the woman who assisted me (i believe is/was the owner) was very umm... sales person-y? sorry, not gonna drop $250 on a dog bed without looking around and doing a little research first - and telling me something along the lines of "it might sell out soon and idk when we're going to get anymore" isn't going to incentivize me at all... i purchase my 70 and 35lb dogs' food here, and a 30lb bag lasts me a little under a month and costs ~$40. very reasonable and the food is made by a small, family-owned/run business. the employees are super chill and always ask if you want help with things going out to your car, etc. they used to have a killer rewards program (10% of your purchase becomes store credit), but recently changed it. 12 UPCs from same dog food and you get the 13th bag free. it's certainly not a bad deal, but doesn't take into account things like $200 dog beds, lol. still - it is a rewards program and something they don't have to offer. the animals that come in here are also suuuuuper cute and the owners are usually pretty cool too. definitely not a place i'd recommend to someone who thinks Ol' Roy is acceptable dog food, but if you understand what should go into dog food (or want to, or want someone to offer you educated advice), this is definitely a place worth checking out! read more

My dog had fleas. She had fleas real bad. I had tried washing her, I had tried getting her professionally sudsed up. I had Frontlined her, generic brand smeared her, tried everything! Nothing seemed to help. So, being new to town, I asked my friend Allie, who I met through my precocious mutt liking her well bred Havanese, where I might find some help and products for killing those pesky pests and she recommended Bark 'N Purr . I found that they were actually really helpful and set me up with some Capstar and some Nematodes. Those totally did the trick. In addition, the lady there suggesting feeding my dog treats with garlic in them to help with keeping my girl flea free. I also like the range of toys and other products they have. When I needed to get my dog a harness, I found a nice one that was affordable and comfortable for her. I really like how homegrown it feels there and that it's not a megastore. read more

I love this place. Not having a car, but having a dog with some crazy food allergies makes it so nice that they have free delivery. Their customer service has always been awesome, free samples, and they haven't ever gotten annoyed with my millions of questions and stories about my dogs.
