New owners as of the last year- owner seems pretty busy and stays on the phone constantly making deals with other people about buying/selling animals. It seems like the staff aren't allowed to answer many questions and you've got to wait for the owner to make time to talk to you between calls. Unfortunately I also noticed last time I was there a few months ago that the rats for sale (not feeders) had maggots in their cage & a poop pile atleast a week old. Unfortunately I don't get the vibe of communal animal excitement and adoration from staff/ownership that I do at some other pet stores like zookeeper. read more

After many years of doing business with Gallery of Pets with pleasure i can honestly say I have been sorely and surprisingly disappointed in my interactions (and promised lack of communications) with staff since February 2026. For 6 months I attempted to keep in touch via phone and email after my house flooded and they rescued my fish. They promised to keep in touch, return phone calls and provide written estimates. I finally did receive an invoice for rescuing my fish but replies to invoice mistakes so i could pay them never happened. My last phone call in late July they told me a particular person would call me back soon after they hung up. I'm still waiting on the call as i am estimates for replacing flood damaged equipment. I've experienced lie after lie by phone and in writing for 6 months. i do best when people tell me honest truth. If they can help... great. If they cannot please be honest in communications. I can truly say this business can no longer be trusted. It's sad. Be cautious. read more

Hi, I don't even know where to start with this place. When I was around nine years old, my dad and I lived just up the street from this store. We used to go in to buy bird food, and I would spend my time looking at the fish. I loved it there. A few days before my tenth birthday, I decided that all I wanted was a chinchilla. I was beyond excited when my dad took me to the store to get the one they had. While one of the employees went to tell who I assumed was the owner that we were interested in the chinchilla, my dad followed a few steps behind. The woman didn't realize my dad was close enough to hear her, and she told the employee not to sell us the animal. She described my dad as incompetent and said I probably wasn't much better. She even claimed we would likely kill the animal and then ask for a refund. She genuinely said this. I have absolutely no idea why she would make such assumptions about my dad or me. This led to a heated argument outside the store between my dad and the owner, and we never went back. I used to love this store, but the people who work there are absolutely despicable I'm sure you can scroll through these reviews to find the only dad left way back then. The first time my fiancé and I went, we had the best time, and the staff was amazing. The second time was a complete 180. I found two toys and treats I wanted to get for my dogs. We walked the whole store, and I came to the front to check out. The gentleman who was behind the register didn't address me when I stood in the 'line'. After 5 or so minutes, I stepped a bit further and said, " Excuse me, is this the line?" Very rudely, I was told they only have one POS system, and he was in the middle of a transaction. I completely understand both the one POS system and not canceling the sale. What I don't understand is if your other customers are still trying to decide which live animal they want to purchase, why start the process of ringing them up? Due to the person behind the counter, I put the toys and treats away and left. Again, I understand certain aspects, but his rude behavior and inability to provide support left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

Lovely place but I have a big problem with the way they care for their betas and one large Oscar fish. They have multiple betas in tiny half circle containers bolded to the wall, in murky still water, the betas are clearly unhappy, just floating in place, with no filter, sand or plants. There is only one beta that has an appropriate tank, and there is a lot of room to add more thanks. They also have an Oscar fish in a very overcrowded tank, it can only move back and forth and cannot turn, as it is surrounded by large rocks and coral, and the tank is shared with 2 other fish.the tank size is fine but the coral desperately needs to be removed. Other than that the place is truly delightful and nice, I just wish they would take better care of their special fish. there is a room that seems to be under Reorganization, so I'm praying they plan on putting the betas in there. I am planning on adopting one of the betas in the small still water "tanks" and demanding that container be taken down after I adopt it, hopefully I can rehabilitate them all until all the containers are taken down. I am also planning on donating some large tanks in the hopes of them using them for the betas. This bad care is very surprising as they take lovely care of all the other animals including birds, pics, reptiles, and the shop tortoise. I truly love this shop and pop in anytime I can but this poor care breaks my heart and I hope the shop owner will become aware of the situation and fix it read more

This place should have never gotten axolotls they obviously don't know how to properly take care of them and they were starving to death having to eat each other and their skin was burning off from ammonia! They obviously did no research before getting these animals and have no business trying to sell them. read more

Fantastic pet store, as fish keepers I can say the fish here are well loved and cared for, all in appropriate housing and with appropriate tank mates. Small animals are in excellent size cages with appropriate pairing and grouping. Absolutely unbelievable. When going there to get a first bird for teenage grand child, was astounded at how knowledgeable these people are. Incredibly they won't sell you a bird until you bring the cage in and they get the bird used to it for a couple of days (there's NO charge for this). A friend gave us a cage, but the spacing on the bars was too large for the small parakeet we bought. So we bought a proper cage. They helped set it up with the things we needed (which we had no knowledge about - millet holder, toy, pumice perch, etc.) They put our little parakeet in it with a companion. They'll will weigh him and make sure he's eating properly and comfortable in the cage. This is a couple of days or a week. Then we can take him home. They're there 7 days a week to answer questions in person or on the phone. They'll trim feathers anytime (except Sundays) for free. Forever. $10 a year puts you into their Pet Club, which gives you a 10% discount. I saved more than $10 already and haven't even brought our bird home yet. Shopping at this store brought me back to the early 1960s, when customer service actually was more than a phrase and meant something. Pretty cool to see them giving "Alice" her breakfast. This huge tortoise got led to her meal with a squash. I couldn't imagine EVER going to another pet store in Austin. read more

The conditions the animals are kept in at this store are horrendous. The owner and staff should be absolutely ashamed of themselves! And when the owner has been asked about why they allow their animals to he kept in such horrible and abusive conditions, they will gaslight you and and cuss you out. An example of their care is their axolotl's. They kept their axolotl's in an enclosure way too small for them, with disgusting contaminated water, and they were starved to the point that they were eating one another! And that's just one example of their neglect. None of their animals are properly cared for. Please don't ever buy from this business. They need to be shut down and investigated for animal cruelty! read more

This store needs employees are are properly trained and educated to care for unique/more exotic animals. Their needs are different, and animals in their stores are suffering because of it. Pros: healthy, live animals (rabbits, rodents, birds, fish); knowledgeable, competent staff; clean facility; bird boarding; free wing clipping for birds purchased in house Cons: expensive; parking is tight due to a small lot with other businesses; limited supplies and resources; only sell select species (those that make the best pets). Overall, I think it's awesome that you can buy a fledgling bird, they hand feed it for 6 weeks, and the buyer socializes it in that time period. The birds are expensive. For example, I paid $500, but I got a remarkable companion. I also paid $600 for an adopted bird and everything needed to start a life together. On the other hand, I paid $225 for a pair at a bird show. Yet, I have no regrets regarding my purchase at the store despite the vast price difference. That's because I have 2 of the most amazing pet birds that started their lives with us loving attention and handling. They are so gentle and would never bite. My bird show birds are beautiful and adorable. They are also scared and bite. They'll require months or more than a year of training to be good pets. A lot of people don't have that amount of time, energy, & devotion to training that's required of parent fed birds. read more

Shame not only on the owner but also the heartless employees for treating those poor selfless animals that way. They depend on you to care for them and you did the exact opposite of that!!!! You cannot tell me you didn't see that many axolotls in that bad of a condition. That did not go unnoticed by staff members by any means. If you would have been feeding them properly, which you clearly were not seeing as how malnourished they are, you would have seen the horrendously sick condition they were in. And to keep them in that filthy tank makes me wonder how you even take care of yourselves. I hope this "business" goes down the toilet when people realize how cruel you are. read more

Disgusting conditions for small animals. I know nothing about bird, reptile, or fish care so I cannot speak on the care of those animals but considering how poor the care was for their small animals I wouldn't be surprised if these animals were suffering too. They have a shop rabbit that they keep in a TINY cage and I would assume never gets let out. All their small animal cages are disgusting and in general the store is just unsanitary.
