Located off of Kamehameha highway is a tiny food truck selling all of the local kine grinds: pastels, lau lau, pickled mango, dried aku, poke, and lomi salmon. On our way back home from a North Shore adventure my boyfriend and I pulled over to pick up some dinner. We picked up half a dozen lau lau and lomi salmon to make a Hawaiian style dinner. The lau laus were hot when we got them and were still warm when we finally got home and decided to eat them. I wish we caught his name because this uncle was nice, friendly, and so thoughtful. He made sure to TRIPLE bag our lau laus. Now I'm no expert on Hawaiian food but you could tell from the first bite and every bite that these were made with a lot of love. Everything we purchased from the Holo Holo Spot was on point in terms of taste. The perfect amount of pork to fat and the leaves were the right amount of soft. The lomi salmon was bomb. My only regret was not buying some kulolo and pickled mango, which only means I'll have to come back another time for more! read more

$5 coconut and $10 kulolo aren't exactly (Kam) highway robbery in itself. But, the fact that Mr. Slick sold me a coconut with tart effervescent coconut water and couldn't look me im the eye when I stood back in line and told him politely when I got to the front, I knew that he knew he sold me a skunk nut and ripped me off. He just mumbled, "I don't know anything about that" then out some change in the drawer and then disappeared from view. The kulolo was OK if you've never had it before and had zero expections. This one tasted like sweetened azuki bean flavored sticky rice. When I shared it with my cousin and her parents, who are local Portuguese+Native Hawaiian, they took a bite and gave me the farcical "Mm! Where can I find this place? Translation: how do we avoid falling into this tourist trap? Because this is a 100% tourist trap. And do I need to mention pissing fecal liquid out of my ass hole? That fermented coconut water was Drano to my pipes, which would have been whatevers if I had full access to a toilet but we were taking the scenic route back via Kalanianaole and there's no worse sinking feeling when you have to go and have nowhere to go. I think this was so he can take advantage of me not being local. My boyfriend had also wandered off so it could have also been that I was a woman that looked like I was by myself to inflate prices. Wanted to support a small local biz so we stopped off here for pickled mango and boiled peanuts. For starters, this guy tried to rip us off, asking if we're local. Trying to make deals and sell us stuff we didn't want. Refused to give us change. Ended up going back before leaving to ask for a resolution, he ended up giving us pineapple instead of money back. Boiled peanuts were sold out, no problem but the Pickled mango was old, inedible and sour (not in a good way). Pineapple was inedible (not sure how you mess that up). Poke that he had us sample then demanded we purchase since we tried it was not poke - old fish, stringy and white parts only, was putrid. Absolutely do not recommend this place and hope this guy figures out how to treats customers right and make food correctly and safely. This place is LOCAL as LOCAL can get! Me and fiancé just came from ziplinning at Kualoa Ranch around 6pm and we were asking around for a resta that's popular for locals. We weren't looking for any Americanized Hawaiian food. We were looking to taste the Culture of Hawaii. Unfortunately many Mom and Pop shops close around 5pm, but we stumbled on Holo Holo Stop which closed around 7pm which was perfect for us. The owner George recommended us to get the Lau Lau with rice, some Cuban meat dish, and Ahi Poke. The Lau Lau is the best! The mixed spinach and pork had this amazing flavor. I forgot the Cuban dish, but it was pretty good as well. The Ahi polo was delicious! He added sweet and spicy soy sauce which added amazing flavor. 1 meal was good for the two of us. George was very accommodating, but I couldn't understand half of the things he was saying because if his fast speech and very deep Hawaiian accent. He's as local as locals get! He's a very nice guy and we're wishing him all the best. He also mentioned he's the best cook and nobody in Hawaii cooks like him lol. It's pretty much the most authentic Hawaiian experience we got in our whole trip. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the poor tables and chairs. I came here with my husband because he kept telling me that this was the best laulau on island. I'll preface by saying my husband's not from here and I'm biased because I grew up here and my dad's laulau was the best to me. He went around the island and for the first time ever I was able to catch this guys truck. I won't really know about how he treats other people that aren't from here. Since my husband is a little uncertain still with how to pronounce words I told him to pick and I'd say it. I guess he could tell I'm from here and was wondering how a seemingly hapa hawaiian girl knew what she wanted to order. I thought he was nice and friendly. We ordered: laulau with rice, poke and kulolo. Kulolo is pretty expensive, but you get a lot to be honest. I like laulau that has fat in it I'm not going to lie. Idk how people eat laulau with no fat in it because it becomes dry. He put fat chunks inside the laulau which made me happy! No fish inside, which was also a plus! This lunch wagon is right next to the hygienic store on kameheha highway in Kaneohe, under the big Banyon tree. Learned about this place from my cousin. My cousin have often come here with her family before going to the beach. She gave rave reviews about this place. They only take cash so be prepared. Ordered pasteles, ganduli rice, and pickled mango. They have lau lau and poke. The poke didn't look that great so passed. Pasteles was a winnah!! Tasty, big, and plenty of stuffings. Let me start my review by saying the positive: The vendor is really friendly and will tell you stories about how his dad was in Blue Hawaii. He's lovable, says he has the heart, and his food is homemade. We ordered a lau lau plate that came with a pastele, rice, and lomi salmon. We also ordered a side of poke, which was about half of a pound of really really fresh ahi poke. I couldn't complain. He gave us a Pepsi and a water, too. We enjoyed the fresh quality of his food, his cheerful demeanor, but...the price tag was extremely high. He charged us $28! Yikes! For one plate lunch and some poke. We thought we would be saving money by sharing a plate, but he charged us quite a bit. The proprietor asked us several times if we were from the mainland. My boyfriend, local, Hawaiian, Oahu-born and raised said no, and I told him we live in Kaimuki. After we drove off, my boyfriend said he probably charged us more because he thought we were tourists. This seems consistent with a lot of other reviewers. I didn't let it ruin my Sunday Funday in the countryside. I know it can be tough on local businesses, so I was okay paying the hefty price tag. Ambience is as you would expect with a food truck. I appreciated the folding table & chairs for us to sit at. What I have a tough time coming to grip with is the price. No prices were posted; that in itself is reason for me to walk away (but my kids wanted to drink from coconuts ASAP, and we were all hungry). If our crew is working in this area on a Friday or Saturday this is where we definitely come for lunch. George/Keoki, the Owner, is laid back, what you see is what you get, humble funny kind of guy. The food is always flavorful to me-- my favs are laulau, and smoke meat. We were so hangry we forgot to take photos. All plates come with a free can of drink. This time I also bought pickled mango which he uses shibata; large tear shaped mangoes. All I can say is I drank all the brine juice which you can because his recipe is less tart/vinegary, perfectly sweetened; although I prefer pickled Hayden or purée mangoes over shibata. I really like the owner and his food-- I get a nice cultural Ohana local connection with him whenever I stop by. Like visiting a nice uncle. I'll never forget the first time I bought from him, he must of just parked the lunch truck and rolled up. I ordered 12 plates combo laulau and smoke meat when he asked me if I could wait. He had to call his Mom to bring down the frying pan to finish frying the smoke meat in the pan. It was the most funny and loving and excited conversation I had ever witness. Let me start this review by saying that the guy was pretty nice when we first arrived. We wanted to buy roadside coconuts as we have in Maui and he said no problem he didn't tell me a price though. I asked him how much they are and he said $5. We wanted 2. He then asked me about pineapple and I said ok since I thought maybe he would put in my coconut. I then noticed he meant a ziplock with some pieces and I told him no I'm ok on the pineapple I don't want it . When I gave him $20 to pay for the 2 coconuts he gave me $5 back and said he would throw in another coconut and I said I only want 2 of them. He pretty much stole five bucks from me. This is how I felt. This is when things went really bad. He said he would cut the coconuts open after we drank them. So once I finish them I gave him mine and my girlfriends coconut. He cut them open and said he would give us a utensil to get the meat out. He ended up giving me a used dirty ladle that had some leftover food on it. So disgusting. We also noticed the coconuts were spoiled. We threw them out. We are really concerned about getting sick but thankfully didn'. Would not recommend anyone stopping by. Making the trek up to the North Shore on a rainy Saturday recently, the Holo Holo Stop called out to me and said : Stop! Since I was hungry and it looked appetizing, our little group pulled up and dodging the rain puddles, ambled up to order. A friendly gentlemen doled out plates full of Lau Lau--taro leaves stuffed with steamed pork & Hawaiian fish over a bed of white rice. All that for $7 with a can of Pepsi. Also on the menu and looking good: freshly cut local pineapple. As you can see from the other Yelps on this truck and their unanimous 5 STAR YELPS, Holo Holo is worth the stop. Not every truck shilling food along the Hawaiian roadside is good, so it's best for a curious foodie to yelp the good trucks and make the effort to find them so you can enjoy some delicious and authentic Hawaiian food while enjoying heaven in the Aloha State! read more

Some people complain that this simple looking food truck is over priced but for good portioned authentic local Hawaiian food and local favorites it is priced appropriately. Best Pateles in Hawaii! The poke is really good too. The guy running this food truck is really personable and entertaining. We always try to stop here everytime we come to Oahu. Today was slow so he came outside of the food truck and just talked stories with us. Great food, great prices, and great service. One thing to note, he is only here on weekends and holidays!! Another thing, people say he charges a lot and I respectfully disagree. I've come with people from the mainland, and also by myself and we always get tons of food for the amount we pay. That being said I do sympathize for anyone who thought they over paid. I think when he makes plates he charges according to what you choose... for example if you add poke depending on his cost of the fish, he'll charge extra. I do agree that he should have fixed listed prices and charge a set average for the fish. His pasteles, gondule rice and Lau lau are BOMB!!! I know people who always buy from this other windward truck because they are very large but dang, size is not everything! His are super moist with a delicious flavor. Holo Holo basically means vacation or time off. So when driving up to Polynesian Culture Center- usually I'm on time off and I have some time to talk story or chit chat along the way before getting to the BYU campus at around morning 10 ish. Usually- I have my parents with me to go on a show day/ vacation. So going to the Holo Holo Stop is an easy fun way to make a pit stop for my mom to go bathroom and for us to get a plate to share and eat between the 3 of us so as not to get too full but to have enough in our tummies for when we go to the PCC to be able to get up and go off to the farthest area first to get better seats for the small shows. Great to be able to explain local food to my parents like - ohh this it what it is like on Molokai or this is good compared to this. Great way to sample and taste different local foods for my parents that are not used to this kind of food and I am in no way able or willing to make all of the foods. Poke and Lau lau. Yes -there are many choices almost all over Honolulu. Not all places do them well. I'd argue- it is way better here at Holo Holo Stop compared to Ala Moana Mall Food Court where most tourists are going to experience Poke and Lau Lau. Price is really good for the hand made quality feel of the food. Not bad at all - especially to share a plate before going to some other destination. Bad news- it is far out and needs to have a destination attached to it- it is not a daily drive activity. I don't know if they are able to make any of the Eat the Streets but it would be wonderful to see them there too. Definitely pleasing and great for my parents and they really enjoyed tasting different food to them. read more

I was really excited to try the pastele and the gandule rice. Uncle was so nice and friendly, told me his pastele was the best on the islands. They were really good but definitely too salty. The bigger issue, however, was the gandule. Uncle was talkative until he served the rice. He looked at the rice and seemed suspect, but I didn't think much of it at the time, I didn't have any reasons to. Fast forward, when it was time to eat and I opened the container, I saw that the rice seemed uncooked. I thought, "Hmm?" And took a bite of it and sure enough I chewed on raw, uncooked rice grains, it was gross. I realized right away why Uncle was suddenly quiet, he knew he was selling uncooked rice to me. We salvaged it by reheating with added water but it ended up like risotto... I really wanted to give a great review for this but I feel like Uncle knew and I got ripped off. However, located under the banyan tree across from the orange Hygenic store on saturdays and sundays there is an awesome food truck!! On the weekdays he said that he is in downtown honolulu on cooke street between the OHA building and the Kaiser building. He has a wide variety of island favorites such as: pastele, smoked meat, pickled mango, gondule rice, lau lau, poi, poke, pineapple and kulolo. Everything was well priced and the more you buy the better the price!! 3 lau lau for $10!! If you are on the windward side or can find him downtown you should check out this food truck! We couldn't find anything and decided to stop at the next one we saw. When we first approached the truck it looked run down and old. I try not to let the ambiance of local food trucks phase me as I understand this is the country side. However, as we got closer, I saw too many flies for a normal food truck. Again I tried to not let it phase me. We asked for TWO coconuts and he casually asked if we wanted pineapple. My boyfriend thought he meant inside the coconut as a topping but he jipped us into thinking that but it was actually a bag! He charged us $15 total and instead of refunding us, he gave us another coconut. Based off the other reviews, I can see how he charged tourists more but then I saw him dealing with another customer. The customer already paid but he asked for money after. WARNING GROSS DETAILS ALTERT. He told us to finish the coconut water then he would open it so we can eat the meat. After he opened it he told us that he'd give us a utensil to eat the meat. Tell me why the heck he handed my boyfriend a DIRTY ladle that he fished out of his dirty dishes sink and thought we would even entertain that idea. Went for a little walk - and there was this white truck in the distance. I could see locals stopping by, buying bags of goodies, chatting, smiling, laughing... I decided to check it out. Tear stains on my face, I look up at the chef and ask him what he had to offer... I was open to anything. "You need the Lau Lau..." and that's how it started. My husband & I left with Lau Lau, Pastele, Pineapple, Poke, and true Aloha. That food was SO good - I felt better instantly. Loved it all - but the Lau Lau was unreal.
