The Hawaiian fresh poke was more traditional. It had more of an umami taste and was not as flavorful as the pau hana. Still very good though! We added furikake to our rice. Our mixed bowls were $19 each, which was great for tasty poke! The staff were nice, too. I was able to sample some and they were happy to explain what they were. They also quickly refilled one of the flavors I got as they were running low. This grab-and-go spot is perfect for quick service. It's a no frills spot that serves high quality fish and rice. And even after we moved, we would still drive out just to come here for the seafood. That's how special it was to us. The reason why he chose Tamashiro over other grocery stores was simple--it was quality and because of my Nanay (grandma). His mom purchased from here and made so many delicious dishes. He knew what to look for, and he trusted this place. For him, it wasn't just about buying food... it was about getting the best for his family. My dad isn't the type to say "I love you." He shows it. One of the biggest ways he showed love was through his cooking. Even after a long day on his feet cooking for others, he would come home and cook for us. That was his way of taking care of us. I loved coming here with him. It was a five-senses overload--the smell of fresh seafood, the sound of people talking story, the colors of fish on display. Back then when you were allowed to sample a grape or poke to make sure it was good before buying. But more than that, it was time with him. Lots of parking in the shopping center...stalls are good sized. It is usually busy, so parking can be problematic.

One thing that I (and I'm sure others) noticed in this section, was the awful smell. It's the first time this odor was here. It smelled like rotting seafood, or decomp, like something died. I smelled it all the way from the liquor section by the sake, to the back by the seafood case. There was a maintenance person working on the pumps, and the refrigerated cases looked like there was a lot of condensation inside; meaning possible cooling issues. Another sign on the inside door said the drains were clogged, so perhaps that was causing the smell and other issues? Unfortunately, no one was at the counter, and the sign said I had to wait about 15 minutes (it was 12:30 when I got there). Someone finally did come a little after 12:45, so I got my poke to check out, only to find only 1 register open, with 5 people in line. I really hope they address these service issues.

The fish was soft and pretty fresh. A little different spin than the other Poke shops we like but it was pretty good. If you are in the Waikiki area and looking for take-out and something quick that tastes pretty good, drop in at Sato Seafood. I ate the Otoro Uni Handroll right away... in the open-air... mmm! So fresh and delicious! At home, I enjoyed the Deluxe Kaisen Don. My favorites were the firm, sweet scallops and the briny ikura! The next morning, I saw Sato Seafood at the Kaka'ako Farmer's Market... wow... these gals work hard! They're so diligent, polite, and efficient!
