After seeing the very favorable reviews on renting from Holoholo, we decided to try them out on our recent Kauai vacation. We were excited to take a family ride up the bike trail, which we've done many times before with other providers. I'll jump to the reason for this zero star review. Service - the young man at the checkin desk was of zero help in adjusting seats, handle bars (both rusted shut) or adjusting our 8 year old's helmet. Selection - the absolute worst inventory of bikes I've witnessed on our multiple trips to Kauai. Every one was full of rust and looked like they were retrieved from the landfill. The Keiki bike's chain came off twice going up the hill and one of the adult bikes chain came off - both bikes had to be replaced (took almost an hour to receive the replacements). Value - prices were similar to other shops, but we've never experienced this many problems with any bike rentals on Kauai. My son-in-law requested a refund and after a heated discussion by phone where he was verbally berated by the owner (he also severely berated his employee) he granted him a partial refund. BUT not before the owner called him a scammer and said he would not have replaced the bikes (both broken down with no chain) had he known he would request a refund! WOW! Just a word of advice to any potential renters - go check out the place and its inventory BEFORE renting from Holoholo. We love Kauai and use local vendors whenever possible but WE WILL NOT BE BACK TO THIS PLACE!! read more

What an absolute treasure Holoholo Bike Rentals is! From the moment we pulled into the parking lot, we felt welcomed and cared for. The owners, Nadia and Ka'Imi, are truly some of the kindest people we met on the island ~ warm, genuine, and even aligned with my love for Jesus, which made the experience all the more meaningful. My husband and I are avid cyclists, and we were so impressed with how well-maintained the bikes were. They took time to talk with us about the bikes we were renting, and everything was in excellent working order. We rented for the entire day and absolutely loved every moment riding the trail. Meandering through town, stopping for lunch along the way ~ it was pure joy. This was one of the highlights of our trip to Kauai, and without a doubt, we'll be renting from Holoholo again when we return on our next trip to Kapa'a. Called with the intention of asking about bike rentals but then saw kayak rentals on their website and decided to ask about that too. Definitely the cheapest kayak rental in the area - $75 (including all taxes / fees), +$5 for delivery + pickup, so total of $80 for a double kayak without the hassle of needing to deal with transporting the kayak ourselves! Person who helped me on the phone (she told me her name but I forgot it) was super helpful and friendly. Had some issues with Venmo username but got that figured out. Slightly inconvenient when we were initially told 9AM for delivery for then 10:30AM was the time that they could do - I couldn't pick the time, which I think isn't how a business should be run. They also don't do deliveries on Sundays. I'm all for family-run businesses, but that's really just not a customer-first attitude and not how you should be running a business (not being able to pick what time you want to start kayaking in the day). Delivery and drop off was smooth, we called on the way back from the falls, they were there when we got there. Mostly smooth process, good pricing! read more

We decided very last minute to kayak up the Wailua River to the hiking trail that leads to the falls. It was already late Saturday morning & the options were few. My husband had found the Holoholo Rentals named in a trip advisor blog, so we decided to give them a call. They had availability to rent a 2-person kayak & could drop it off at the boat launch area for us too! Not to mention they beat the competition's prices. We just need to stop by their little kiosk & sign the waiver & we were on our way! We texted them when we were back & they were there very quickly to pick up the kayak. Great Location! The owner is responsive and friendly and his prices are great. But....don't expect high quality or luxury equipment or any extras. We rented bikes from which we hardly had any options to choose from. Two of the four bikes ended up having some issues. Gave me the impression that they don't inspect their bikes before they rent them out. Also, they don't give you any information on what to do if you have a problem while you are out. Pretty much same situation with the kayaks which we also rented. Three of the four seats they gave us were broken and missing parts which made it challenging to get setup. I recommend if you rent equipment that you check the quality of everything possible before you leave on your adventure. Lesson learned for us as it would have reduced some of the stress associated with some of our problems. Luckily, we were able to still have a great bike excursion and kayak adventure. A few tips for the owner: it would be great if water was available for customers and also a bathroom. Also, there was religious music blasting both times we were there and the entire shop was all religious items for sale and really nothing else which I found off putting. read more

When we called earlier the toddler seat was already out, but the owner gave me a call when the seat returned to the shop so we could snag it. Only went a block away and she kept crying so we had to go back and return the trailer (and granddaughter to her parents) so we could start our bike ride. Bottom line up front: local businesses deserve support and growing up in Hawaii I understand the challenges and I'm disappointed this business owner chose an extra $50 over providing a quality product and experience. My partner and I wanted to try out the new e-bikes everyone had been riding around town. We paid upfront for (2) 2-hour rentals @ $40/each. As soon as we left the rental location, I began to pedal and heard a large clank - similar to when you do not shift gears on a traditional bike. Unaware of how these bikes worked (no demo given or offered) I instead turned on the electronic mode and tried again hearing the same sound. Within 500 feet of the business I looked down at what was happening in the bike gearing and the plastic fender was totally broken; preventing a clear cycle of the pedal. We immediately turned around (mind you, within first 10 mins of our rental) and alerted the worker. She offered to trade out for another bike and apologized, nothing further mentioned. We assumed it is a rental, the plastic fender probably had sheared. At return of our rental 2 hours later we were then informed we needed to pay an additional $50. How that amount was chosen was never communicated to me. The owner spoke to us via their employees phone and instead of providing aloha and understanding, she instead insisted that I was responsible and began arguing with my partner stating that I was lying. She compared my almost immediate return of the rental bike within eyesight distance of her establishment with a broken part to an instance of another patron that left a bike unattended and resulted in the bike being stolen. Totally incomparable. I hope future guests have a better experience than we did as we won't be able to provide this business as a recommendation. I hate to argue and I understand the grind of small business, so I paid the additional $50 and informed the owner I would need to write this review. The owner could have done the bare minimum to explain how she came to chose/breakdown the additional incurred cost. Her employee could have also communicated this to us prior to us exchanging the bike. Again, hate to write reviews like this as I fully understand the business risk and liabilities I'm agreeing to when renting -- but if we're within minutes of rental and we're doing our due diligence to make you aware of something wrong, this is where a business owner could have very easily eaten the cost for a purely aesthetic plastic bike component, that was very clearly broken prior to my rental. Hope this business does better in the future. read more

Excellent! We had a weekend with the girls - we enjoyed every minute of this bike ride. The girl who helped us was young but she was so helpful and knew exactly what she was doing. While we were riding on the bike path, one if the bikes got a flat tire. We called the office, low and behold a beautiful man with a smile came with a replacement bike. So friendly and looked so happy, full of life. After the exchange some in our group turned back to return the bikes and just a few of us (myself included) went to the very end of the bike bath - incredible ride & views. When we returned our group was talking stories with the man who came to replace the bike. What an incredible story he had! Before we left, our group prayed over him, his family and the business. We rented beach cruisers (2 hour rental) for a morning bike ride along the Ke Ala Hele Makalae Path. The rental and check in process was so seamless! The bikes are a bit worn down/rusty, but worked just fine! The path is mostly flat and suitable for kids and adults. The path is a lovely, relaxing way to take in the scenery of the east coast of Kauai! We really enjoyed our time riding along the coast. It is ~8 miles and took us about 1 hour 20 minutes, including a few stops. read more

Used this company twice within our stay in Kaua'i. We rented e-bikes the first time to go up and down the bike path. One of the bikes we rented had no working breaks. Not the safest thing when your on a busy bike path. Switched it out for another bike. We also rented kayaks. Both kayaks had issues. Neither of them had the original seats. They were very uncomfortable to ride in this condition. Also, the paddles were not for kayaks. They were not the proper length or shape for a kayak. My biggest concern is that I gave them my credit card over the phone and now I have fraudulent charges on my credit card. Of course it's possible that it wasn't from them, but I'd give the one star regardless. The family seemed nice that runs the shop, but I'm not a fan of how they do business. The owner told us about the busted kayak when he showed up to drop them off, and openly discussed his dissatisfaction in his customers who broke his equipment. Bikes and kayaks. My son and I had a great experience from rental office and through out the 2 hour ride. Pedal bikes are a great way to tour the beach front trails with spectacular views. We rode along the the path and visited hotels through the south and incredible beaches to the North. There are eBikes available but I would not recommend those for longer rides as the models available are meant for short trips and can often be seeing by commuters in big cities when commuting from home to public transportation to office or other work place. I met one of the new owners and they recently purchased this business and asked me about my experience thus far I was very pleased and would certainly return All their equipment is newer and of great quality (I have a cruiser of same brand), bike trailers for the kiddos and other accessories (at cost) if needed.
