Local Kauai native turned Bike Shop Owner, Bicycle John is now gone. Briggs Bikes has the new "Vibe" going on! I was browsing the mall after a pizza and ice cream early dinner and the awesome logo of Briggs Bikes caught my eye! Needed to get my bike hand gears fixed because it wasn't shifting, Briggs was super friendly and suggested different options to fix my bike. $105 to change out my hand gear and the gear cables as well as changing out the right hand brake cables, they work sooo much better now. This is where you buy a bike on Kauai. Unless you mail order one. But seriously, why not support the mom and pop shops like this one? Here's what you get: + John knows a LOT about bikes. He rides to work every day. He build all the bikes in his shop. He repairs all the bikes that come in, himself. + John sells good bikes. Not too flashy, but definitely not cheap. He sells durable bikes that will last you when you ride. + Great customer service and free repairs on the bikes you buy there. I would do this just because I don't want to spend a bunch of time and effort fixing my own bike (only t find out I didn't fix it properly, on the road!) + No pressure sales. When my wife and I went in, John was knowledgeable and wanted to share that know how with us. He did not push us to buy anything. I love that in an expert; you can tell he just loves bikes and biking. I will be back, but hopefully just for repairs! I highly recommend this place if you are looking to buy a good bicycle. read more

I trust this man with my bike. Talk about a caring enthusiast bike guy and John's your pick. I dropped off my bike which needed to be reassembled after a flight from Portland. Not only did he assemble my Trek he also readjusted and coached me on things that needed to be refreshed. Go NOWHERE else in Kauai to rent or repair or purchase a bike. This place has been taken over by a young local guy, Briggs. I brought my bike in for some repairs and a tune up. He did it in a fraction of time as last place. And replaced broken parts with quality parts so I won't have to go back in next 6 months. Then after doing a great job, Briggs went above and beyond in closing out the deal. Many thanks. Very nice guy to deal with. Rented two bikes while on vacation and he was great. Very fair and accommodating. Highly recommend.

I am a lifelong biker with over 60,000 miles under my belt. While a total character, Bicycle John is far and away the premier bike expert of Kauai, and the experiences I have had with him outfitting my whole family really bear that out. The products he sells (mostly Trek) are top quality, and they are assembled better than factory specs require. And when I get my bikes tuned up by him, they come back better than they would come out new at a second-rate bike shop. I can work on bikes myself, but John is so much better than me I always just get him to do it. It's actually a safety issue depending on what you are doing, and the experience of riding a finely-tuned bicycle on Kauai is definitely worth it. John's prices are about the same as other premium bike shops, but at least with John you get what you pay for. read more

Bicycle John has bid Aloha to Kauai! After many, many years, John has given in to his desire to travel and see more of the world. All we can say is "Mahalo" for a job well done keeping Kauai bikes on the road and heading toward a nearby beach. Briggs has taken over the bike repair shop in Lihue's industrial center and he would seem to be doing a fine job! The inventory looks good, with a nice selection of bicycles for nearly every rider and plenty of necessary biking gear. My old two-wheeler needed a new shifter cable and Briggs told me to bring it over. He arranged to replace the cable that day. The part and repair charges were reasonable and the shifter works well. I took the bike home that same afternoon. Briggs seems like a nice guy and his shop continues to provide bicycle repair service and sales to folks on Kauai. read more

I had my biked packed by "Bicycle John" himself so that I could ship it to Maui. It was a simple beach cruiser. When went to drop it off in the morning he REEKED of alcohol which would in hindsight explain why my handlebars complete with limited edition grip covers and bell were missing as well as the step to hold the handlebars when I unpacked my bike. The way he packed it in the box completely bent my fenders, and those were toast too. I called numerous times to see if he still had my things and maybe forgot to put them in the box, but I got a quick and uncaring "nope". So after visiting a bike shop to replace those items ($98 later) I'm going to go ahead and recommend staying away from this place. read more

We bought two mountain bikes from John. We went to a few other bikes shops first but they didn't seem to know much about the product they sell. John was able to answer all our questions. We spent more than we originally budgeted but John sold us on the quality. You need a good aluminum bike for this island environment or it will rust. Don't. by a cheap bike if you want it to last. John even insisted we leave the bikes a few hours so he could tune them up. Now that is great service. read more

Bicycle John is great! He fixed my travel bike and tuned it up in one day, while providing engaging conversation! My bike has never shifted this well before. John checked out my whole bike, and adjusted every component and trued the wheels, too, for a very reasonable price. I will be back again on our return to Kauai next year. read more

I'm sorry the other reviewer had such a poor experience at Bicycle John's. Mine is just the opposite. My wife and I each bought a bicycle at Bicycle John's, which aside from Walmart and Costco is just about the only place in Lihue and the area to buy a bicycle and the only place to get repairs. We were very satisfied with the price and service. Later we had our bikes repaired after an accident with our bike rack (my fault), and again John was very prompt in getting our bikes repaired considering Kauai is is a bit off the beaten path. I recently moved to Kauai from Alaska and have a road bike. In my packing I seem to have lost a bushing. I took my bicycle down to Bicycle Johns as there are few options, even after reading the previous reviews. He was there and assisted me promptly. He immediately saw my problem, even before I pointed it out. He's obviously very knowledgable. My bike was in need of a tune up and adjustments and he assured me he could perform the job. Since it gets dark pretty early here I told John that I also needed a headlight, I also needed a few co2 cartridges and some oil, as I didnt bring any. He suggested an additional tube as I have only been carrying only one. When I left it he asked me if tomorrow would be ok to pick it up (wow! 1 day in and out?) Of course I said that would be great. During the maintenance he checked my bike over, did the necessary adjustments, replaced a stretched brake cable, lubed it, replaced the bushing, (in stock). When I picked it up the next day, he went over corrosion issues in Hawaii, let me know where to ride and was very helpful with information. I ended up with (2) co2 cartridges, a new tube, bushing, cable, headlamp (160 lumens) and the tune up. It was done overnight, for $150 bucks. Needless to say, I was very pleased. I got great personal service, I was confident that he knows what he is doing, and its obvious he has a passion for bikes. Two giant thumbs up from me! read more
