The people that own and run Holy Smokes are absolute treasures. This is a simple, family owned, and local southern business that takes pride in their food and feels a responsibility to their community. It's a humble restaurant, the inside isn't going to wow you - cabin like appearance and very simple seating. And you can smell the smoke as you pull up. Nothing new here in ages other than the very humble banquet hall that has just popped up. Your mind will drift back to an earlier time where a rail side bbq restaurant pops up to feed the locals. Driving back home to Huntsville through the Scottsboro area, I stopped in on a whim, hungry and hoping to support a non-chain restaurant unique to the area. I lucked out with Holy Smokes. I've been to a couple barbeque places in Scottsboro, and this is my favorite so far. The parking lot is a little bumpy / pot-holey so be careful pulling in. I rolled into the restaurant and immediately felt that this was a local-type spot. The man operating the cash register was engaged in a very friendly, familiar conversations with someone eating there. However, he paused his conversation immediately when I walked up to him and taught me about the different sauces they offered. I'm glad he did, because I definitely have bbq sauce preferences, and he steered me in the right direction! Their fairly large menu is handwritten on the board behind the register, but I opted for a lunch deal they had running - a small pulled pork sandwich with chips and a drink for only $5!! Now granted, it was a small sandwich -- if you were starving you'd likely need a little something extra -- but for how delicious the sandwich was and for that cheap, you really can't do much better than that! The pulled pork itself was really, really good - honestly some of the best bbq I've had in north Alabama. Tender, moist, moderately smoky, not too fatty. Really, really good stuff. The sweet sauce the man at the register set me up with was good too, also faintly smoky and tangy on top of the usual sweet tomato flavor. It was a delicious sandwich, and the sweet tea I got was good too, though maybe not quite sweet enough for me. I plan on coming back with family so we can try some of their other bbq. If the pork stays consistent and the other stuff is even 75% as good, this could definitely be a 5 star spot. Check it out if you're in the area! read more

What you see is what you get! I have nothing but good feelings about this place. They do not pretend to be an up scale 'all show and no go' restaurant. They are down to earth conscientious people who not only provide good food they support a food pantry right outside of their store! How many ritzy places do that? Over been to a lot of BBQ places here lately but this one just okay. I'm not a big reviewer on presentation as I'd rather have better tasting food. Here the presentation definitely lacked and the brisket was just okay. It was juicy meat the end but dry towards the middle. I will give a second try as I'd like to try the ribs or the burgers. The staff was friendly and the place was clean and easy to find. If I were you I'd give a try if you are around. read more

This place is small in size but the food is terrific! You order at the counter -- my husband had the 1/2 rack of ribs but it was very meaty so he shared some with me. They were fall off the bone tender and very moist. Seasoned just right with a rub and sauce on the side. I had the small pork BBQ sandwich with a side of potato salad ( not the traditional kind but made with sour cream - loved it!). They offer several BBQ sauce variations, some vinegar based, which I like. Barry, the owner, is my daughter's brother-in-law and she says the hamburgers are the best she's ever had. Don't knock it being out of the city. It is a very nice and large restaurant. They have daily specials which are super good. We got the pulled pork sandwich, catfish fillet sandwich, and the pulled pork potato which was huge! It all was amazing. And their hush puppies and fineee! read more

I've lived in Texas for the past 6 years, and Texans pride themselves on great BBQ. There is some pretty delicious BBQ in Texas, but I have never had a rack of ribs that compares to Holy Smokes. The meat was smoked to perfection, with a perfect balance of flavor and moisture, and falls right off the bone. This is then topped with possibly the best sweet BBQ sauce glaze I've ever tasted. The pulled pork and chicken are also good, but the ribs could make this little place famous. I also recommend the amazing potato salad as the perfect compliment to the ribs. You're doing yourself an injustice if you pass through this town without trying these ribs!! read more

This place has delicious bbq! My husband and I had their pulled pork sandwiches and crispy fries. Everything was delicious, including their sweet tea. You could taste just the right amount of smoke in every bite of that sandwich. Their thick sweet bbq sauce complimented the pork beautifully. Then we got individual pecan and cherry pies to go to have later. As a baker I am often disappointed by desserts we buy. I was not disappointed! They were delicious!! The only down side to this place is the lack of side options. You can choose between baked beans, slaw or potato salad. Some mac 'n' cheese or even french fries would be a plus. I had to reset my Yelp password as I had not used it for years so I can write a review about Holy Smokes. HOLY SMOKES!! Move over Unclaimed Baggage Center - there is a new star in town. It is hands down the best BBQ I have ever had. Fall-off the bone ribs, great smoky flavor. The ribs alone could propel this establishment to BBQ-dom. The potato salad is a must, especially if you like ranch dressing. It adds a little zing. I love this and I normally would not get potato salad with my BBQ as they are almost always predictably bland. Also, great sweet tea. Friendly and courteous hosts/owners. They made sure we were happy and gave us whatever's left of the brunswick stew as there was not enough left for a full order. I am still dreaming of those ribs. Amazing food and friendly owner! We stopped by here from Atlanta to Huntsville for dinner on a Monday night. Food and Helpfulness: After reading the recent reviews from other Yelpers, we decided to get a rack of ribs and potato salad. Usually the restaurant doesn't have ribs on Mondays but luckily, the owner had a rack of ribs for us! The waiting time was short, and I sipped on iced tea. The iced tea tasted delicious so I helped myself to a second cup. Once the ribs came out on a tray, we digged in. The sauce covered on the ribs was absolutely AMAZING and meat definitely tender and fell off the bone. Potato salad is sour cream based, definitely different from other ones but delicious as well. The owner was very kind and made sure we had everything that we needed so based on the delicious food and friendly owner, I will definitely return to eat here again! Appearance and Hygiene: You can tell this is a local BBQ joint due to the size of the place and customers that come and ask for "the usual." Owners remember names and orders of his patrons. Had to stop at Holy Smokes BBQ on my cross-country drive. I couldn't choose, so I ordered a pulled pork sandwich (with slaw Carolina style - try it with the "sweet heat"), a side of potato salad (apparently sour cream based, yum), and the generous proprietor allowed me to order a couple small ribs to try - the meat fell off the bone, the sauce spicy-sweet perfection. Our family loves good BBQ. I smoke a lot of my own meats, and we have eaten the best (and unfortunately the worst) BBQ as we travel around this great country. We don't eat it a lot, because so much of it really is not that great. But when we saw Holy Smokes on a recent trip, we knew we had to try it. It's in a tiny shack in the middle of town, and it smelled heavenly as we pulled into the parking lot. We were not disappointed. We each got a pulled pork sandwich - my wife and kids got the smaller size without slaw, and I got the larger one with slaw. We also got a half slab of ribs, and took it all to go, as we were traveling with our cats and needed to keep moving. I absolutely LOVED my sandwich... smoky meat, tasty vinegar sauce, and just enough slaw to give it a crunch. My family finished theirs off and all lamented that they had not ordered the large sandwich instead! We were going to save the ribs for a later snack, but ended up opening them up and devouring them right after the sandwiches. The meats were wonderfully seasoned and smoked, and we preferred the thicker sauce to their thin vinegar based sauce. But it was all incredible and we wish they were closer to us here in Florida! We didn't get any pictures because we ate it it while driving, but trust me when I tell you that you have to try this place! read more

the food there wasn't bad. in fact it was great til my daughter found a long black hair in her chicken. i went up to just ask for a new piece and not even asking for a refund. i asked for it to go. they did it fast too. they gave me a new piece, (or I thought was new) til I opened the to go box and seen it. all they did was reheat the exact same piece and put in the box. so disappointing!!! i won't be going back. watch for hair. read more

tiny place, it's an old repurposed grocery story, so the ceiling is low and the building looks like a wreck but the BBQ is awesome. I'm a brisket person not Pork but the pork is quite good. I got there late, so I suspect the condiments tray had already shut down, but the Owner was there and we talked BBQ. He's a man who does what he loves.
