I love the barbecue here. The beans are my favorite. The slaw is my most favorite. It's always so good. My favorite place to eat.

This place has been here seems like my whole life. Excellent bbq. One thing, I miss the Brunswick Stew in the fall/winter. Where'd it go?

The people that own and run Holy Smokes are absolute treasures. This is a simple, family owned,…read moreand local southern business that takes pride in their food and feels a responsibility to their community. It's a humble restaurant, the inside isn't going to wow you - cabin like appearance and very simple seating. And you can smell the smoke as you pull up. Nothing new here in ages other than the very humble banquet hall that has just popped up. Your mind will drift back to an earlier time where a rail side bbq restaurant pops up to feed the locals. I honestly can't imagine ever going back to the big city for a "culinary experience" as long as I have eating options like this. Bon Appetit / happy eating, yelpers!

Driving back home to Huntsville through the Scottsboro area, I stopped in on a whim, hungry and…read morehoping to support a non-chain restaurant unique to the area. I lucked out with Holy Smokes. I've been to a couple barbeque places in Scottsboro, and this is my favorite so far. The parking lot is a little bumpy / pot-holey so be careful pulling in. I rolled into the restaurant and immediately felt that this was a local-type spot. The man operating the cash register was engaged in a very friendly, familiar conversations with someone eating there. However, he paused his conversation immediately when I walked up to him and taught me about the different sauces they offered. I'm glad he did, because I definitely have bbq sauce preferences, and he steered me in the right direction! Their fairly large menu is handwritten on the board behind the register, but I opted for a lunch deal they had running - a small pulled pork sandwich with chips and a drink for only $5!! Now granted, it was a small sandwich -- if you were starving you'd likely need a little something extra -- but for how delicious the sandwich was and for that cheap, you really can't do much better than that! The pulled pork itself was really, really good - honestly some of the best bbq I've had in north Alabama. Tender, moist, moderately smoky, not too fatty. Really, really good stuff. The sweet sauce the man at the register set me up with was good too, also faintly smoky and tangy on top of the usual sweet tomato flavor. It was a delicious sandwich, and the sweet tea I got was good too, though maybe not quite sweet enough for me. I plan on coming back with family so we can try some of their other bbq. If the pork stays consistent and the other stuff is even 75% as good, this could definitely be a 5 star spot. Check it out if you're in the area!

Let's be honest, this isn't 5 star Japanese cuisine, but they don't pretend to be. This is simple,…read morefast, but also tasty, Japanese style food. Their sushi is basic, the Japanese style dishes are somewhat reminiscent of the Japanese style food I would eat in Okinawa - mostly tailored for the American palate, not the Japanese. So, what makes this place worth 4 stars? The combination of price, experience, expectation, and taste. They have a regular sesame chicken special (not to be confused with the Americanized Chinese dish of the same name). It's not battered and fried, and it's not sweet. IMHO, it's better. And you can't beat the price of $6.99. The portions are good, everything is made fresh, the sushi is fair (but so is the price). Reading some of the older reviews it's easy to see why restaurant owners fislike Yelpers. Two words, unfair expectations. If you expect five star experiences at a two star price, you're the one that's delusional. If you get what you pay for then you only have room to praise, not condemn. Their service is fast, this place is not fancy but the owners keep it clean. I've never been in there where they aren't mopping the floor or wiping down tables and the like. And they're very friendly! Small towns like this need people like this who are willing to open up restaurants and charge fair prices. The alternative is a town filled with boring chain restaurants or, even worse, poorly run chains run by people who don't care! So, buy local when you can!
