First of all, the name of this place is deceiving. It is SO much more than carpet. I went here today looking for backsplash tile. This was the 4th or 5th stop on a disappointing run of tile stores. I first visited Tile Outlet, which was OK but didn't have a good selection of traditional tile in 3x6. So, thanks to Yelp! I found my way to Home Carpet One. Luckily when I called to ask a few questions, Mark, was the salesperson they gave me. Over the phone he assured me there would be a good selection - and boy did he deliver on that promise! Before we started walking around to see samples he asked me to describe the finishes in my kitchen, the general style and how long I was planning to be there (to get a sense for how ornate/expensive to go). I LOVED the first sample he showed me - it was right on the money. He showed me a lot of great choices (maybe too many good ones!). Mark is knowledgeable and friendly, but not pushy at all. I will be going back on Monday to finalize my choice once I've checked my slab for match. Other +'s: They are open 8-8 on weekdays and they have Carol's cookies in the store to enjoy. **Updated: I appreciate the note and comment from the owner. While it was resolved in an hour on his side, it was 4 hours of my time during work hours due to all of the confusion. I'm sure his team learned from this, but that does not help me recover my lost time and costs. ** To sum it up they are all sales and no service. My advice is to use these guys as a very nice showroom and then price it out at tile outlet on Fullerton or go to Home Depot or Lowe's. Let's talk about what went well: The sales lady was very interested and took time to understand what we were looking for. They had to select the right carpet and the right tile without pushing the margins of product. They were even able to find the right tile which is a description and give us a sample to go home and verify. When I did the pick up at the warehouse the warehouse folks are very organized and friendly and help me load it into my car.At the end when I had a problem with my product the owner of the store give me a refund. Let's talk about what went wrong: First pricing - the prices here are what you'd expect from a specialty store markup. For brand-name or standard product like natural stone you can find better pricing outlet stores or Home Depot. We purchased from them because they were having a one-day sale in their sales price was comparable to the outlet stores. Second the sale - The sales lady well asking really good questions about our purpose did not ask you questions about the product. In the end we ended up getting the wrong size carpet. It was 56 ft.² however the wrong dimensions because they only selling 12 foot rolls which is standard for carpet. We were specific that we were building a 7x8 room so we should have bought 96 sq ft. She did not mention that to us and so the product we picked up was incorrect. Third pick up - The sales person gave me the wrong delivery information. As a result I went to Lakeview to get part of my order only to be told that I had to go to the South Loop. Unfortunately, I live closer to the south loop so I spend 2 hours driving around to get my product. Forth issue resolution / return: Third the return process - I will admit that they do outline their return policy on the invoice. My contract noticed it was the wrong dimension without even unrolling it. I called immediately. And this is where it got messy -- (a) I was told they cut it so I bought it. They would give store credit, but that's it. (b) After I complained they offered 50% refund or store credit. (c) In the conversation, the sales there were lots of excuses all of which were customer-driven miscommunications.... "maybe she thought you were doing an area rug". (d) There was no focus on resolving my issue... just what they couldn't do for me. (e) Finally, my wife called the owner and he agreed to give us a full refund. All in all, you go to a specialty store for expertise and service. I will maintain for the mark up asked for, they should take charge for making sure they get the right information and not blame the customer. (How am I supposed to know?). And I should not have to go to the owner to get resolution. Like I said, nice showroom. Buy somewhere else. read more

I was exhausted after shopping for paint, furniture, area rugs, lighting and everything else that goes along with rehabbing your home. By the time we got to picking out carpet, I just didn't care anymore. We got a recommendation on Home Carpet One from a friend of mine so we decided to check them out. The prices seemed OK and the sales guy was really helpful. Everything that we loved was way more than we could afford, so we downgraded the carpet but upgraded the padding. We were told our order would come in in about 10 days. Our carpet arrived early and was easily installed within a week. Service and installation was fantastic. Now comes the hard part. I'm not in love with it. I thought we got thicker padding, because we are on the ground floor and it's concrete and COLD, and we didn't. I don't know if it was us or the sales guy that misunderstood, but I can still feel the floor//wood beneath me and it's COLD. Our crappy carpet and padding that we just replaced was not like this. In order for us to remedy the situation we would have to put out more money. Sigh. I don't want to spend anymore money, we paid enough already, I'm just disappointed that it didn't work out. So, we'll live with it. It's not our forever home, it's nice carpet, it's just not what I wanted or like very much. Bah. read more

They are extremely knowledgeable, and work to find something that fits your lifestyle. I love my dog (see picture), but she has...issues...with being left alone. After first adopting her, my carpet was really put through hell, and it was time to replace it. I had never bought carpet before, but the saleslady (Annie?) was very nice and helpful, recommending carpet that would be durable and within my price range. I took home samples, called back with the final choice, and it was delivered on Saturday. The delivery guys were great - so fast! - even taking apart and putting together two beds (I had two rooms done) and moving out heavy dressers full of clothes. The carpet looks great. I docked a star because I'm pretty I could have gotten a better deal if I shopped around more, but, I'm happy with everything nonetheless. read more

We are now 2 for 2 with a great experience with Home Carpet One. Both projects, a kitchen backsplash and stair runners, turned out beautifully. My husband and I couldn't be more pleased with the results. We love the fact that HC1 allows potential customers to check out boards and product samples. It has made a world of difference to us, because it's very difficult to know what something will look like by a very small swatch. Our sales consultant, Mark Gustin, is fabulous. He is attentive, involved, caring, reliable, patient, and offers great advice and input. With that said, he's not pushy either, and that's a great quality for an indecisive person like me. I had a great experience with Home Carpet One on my very first carpet purchase after moving into my new home a few months ago. Initially I had gone with Luna Carpet and had a miserable experience and ended up having to cancel (they wouldn't install the first time accusing me of having asbestos tile which it was not, and the second time brought the wrong carpet AND not enough carpet for the stairs). After these bad experiences, I called Julia at Home Carpet One. I wasn't sure what I wanted when I went into the store and she patiently showed me many different types of carpet so I could get a better sense of what I liked. I ended up taking home 6 different samples (different colors & textures) and finally decided which one I liked. Eric came out to measure my upstairs and was on time, fast & friendly. I was impressed that they drew out the dimensions of the space rather than just taking electronic measurements. This was clear when they came to install the carpet as I chose something with a pattern making it very important to have accurate dimensions. The actual install was great - the two gentleman arrived right on time. They were polite and very efficient. The end product looks fantastic, I'm very happy with the quality and the install itself. At each step of the process it was easy to reach a human on the phone or via email if I had any questions or needs - something very lacking at Luna. While Luna was the cheaper option, my awful experience with them shows that you get what you pay for. I'll come back to Julia & Home Carpet One for any other flooring needs I have. read more

Many thanks to MARK GUSTIN, staff, and installation crew from Home Carpet One. I finally had an opportunity to replace the carpets of over 20 years in my home. The project included all three bedrooms, a staircase with banister needing carpet birdcaged around each individual spindle, a hallway, closets, and another staircase leading to an office as well as the office space. Let's start with Mark. He listened to my needs and my concerns over my two dogs one senior, one young pup. He made great recommendations of areas to look through that included pet friendly carpets, but allowed me sufficient time and space to peruse the carpets without any pressure. When I narrowed my selection to two, he explained the pros of each along with the associated costs. He actually recommended the less expensive one for great reasons and I knew he was right! Once the carpet was identifed he explained the timeline and gave me the names of people who would be contacting me for follow up to measure, provide the cost, and ultimately install the carpet. As this project was monumental in that all the rooms needed to be emptied I was overwhelmed. I was thrilled when they assured me that while I needed to move all the smalls from the rooms, they would be able to work around the large furniture. True to their timeline, they made an appointment to measure all the space, the carpet was ordered, it came in timely, and they scheduled a two day appointment for installation. Every person I dealt with along this journey was professional, and oh so helpful! Next, I must give huge kudos to the installation team. These two men worked from early morning to evening. They didn't just move furniture around, they even disassembled and reassembled beds to make sure that the carpet was installed to perfection. And it was! I can't see a seam anywhere, the stairs are perfect, really perfect! I was literally blown away by how fabulous this project turned out. I was buying area rugs for my new place, and I went to a few carpet stores. I like to make rugs out of carpet since I am not a big fan of wool. Nylon carpeting (Fabrica, Stanton, Karastan) is just more comfortable in my opinion. Plus, you can get the exact size you want. This place is very organized, even though they were doing some renovation. All of the samples were neatly laid out. It doesn't have as much space as the suburban places, but nobody does in the city. What was the most interesting part about my experience here is that Bruce literally picked out the exact carpet I wanted (out of thousands) within 10 minutes. Then, he took another 10 minutes or so to get a quote. First, I have no idea how my vague description led him to the perfect carpet (because elsewhere I looked at hundreds). Second, most of the time it takes companies hours (or days) to give you a price on a custom area rug, and there are availability issues too. I would've just bought it there, but the price was ~ $1500 and I ended up getting the same thing for $1000 somewhere else. So, that's the only issue. Their prices are a bit high. I felt bad until my brother's wife told me she did their entire new house from here. Given how much they did to their house, I am sure they don't miss my little sale. Anyway, I think it's a great store & maybe my price issue was a fluke. read more

Had a great experience. Went in with my two young daughters (ages 10 and 5) to get new carpet for their shared room. We looked at a ton of samples, laying them out on the floor, rubbing our feet on them :), etc etc, and the sales guy helping us (Bob) couldn't have been nicer. We also changed our mind several times--Bob was very patient. He also told us that if we waited a week, we'd be able to take advantage of a free installation special. I appreciated that he didn't rush us into anything. The carpet was delivered and installed within 2 weeks. The installers were great nice guys, and they took almost an entire day to install the new carpet and it looks great. The only reason I didn't give Home Carpet One 5 stars is that I didn't receive a follow-up call from Bob to make sure we were satisfied. In general, I feel like the company should follow up post-installation to answer any questions and just make sure the customer is happy. That didn't happen in this case, but I am happy and would recommend Home Carpet One. read more

My first experience at Home Carpet One was in 1985. I'd just purchased a one bedroom condo in the Gold Coast and my first home. They replaced my kitchen and bedroom floors, and they were wonderful helping me pick the perfect choices for my budget and having the utmost patience with a young first timer who couldn't make up her mind. When my Husband and I purchased our first home in Roscoe Village 1991, we needed kitchen tile, bedroom carpeting and linoleum for the basement, so we went back to Home Carpet One and again they were extremely helpful, efficient and provided an overall above & beyond experience. In 1997 we bought a 3 Flat in Roscoe Village and again Home Carpet One provided our front stair case with a glorious runner, which held up (a testament to the quality of their product) until May 2022. We've been remodeling this 3 Flat since 2018 and it was finally time to replace the front staircase runner and add a runner on the back staircase. So back to Home Carpet One, this time Mark Gustin greeted me at the door, I told him what I was looking for and he immediately lead me to the goods, along the way we got to talking about our remodel and I showed him some pictures of our work, he was engaged and showed me several beautiful choices for runners, his measurements and calculations were estimates but provided me exactly what I needed to know for my budget. In just two days the measuring expert arrived on time and did his work in about 25 minutes, super nice man. Mark then called me immediately with details on when the carpet would be in and when the installers would arrive. Four installers showed up on time and were fantastic and got right to work and the work is AMAZING! They actually bind the runners right in your home using this little sewing machine on wheels low to the floor, it's beautiful work. Since we have 3 floors and 2 sets of staircases they were busy from 9am to 4pm. They even made us a few 3x5 floor rugs for our doggies....so lovely. I'd give this long-standing Chicago business 100 stars if I could, for 37 years they have been a trusted, most valuable resource. Thank you Mark and everyone at Home Carpet One!!! read more

Our experience at Home Carpet One was simply EXCELLENT! They have all types of flooring at every price range. We were in the market for high quality Engineered-Hardwood Floors. We walked into the showroom and met Mark G. He was knowledgeable and helpful. Through the process, he kept us highly informed making us feel like they really cared about our business. After taking some samples home, we chose beautiful Wide Plank Maple. We had to wait a few weeks for the wood; it came from Canada. I also want to give a shoutout to Tomasz (Tom) S. He installed the floor. He is a very personable man and highly skilled, a true professional...Practically an ARTIST! He moved all of our furniture around, protected it with plastic covers from dust; he always cleaned up and he was always On Time. I moved the little things like potted plants and files and he, sometimes with helpers moved the big stuff. I put off getting new floors because I thought it was going to be a huge hassle, but it really wasn't. The installation was completed 2 months ago, and we have had had NO follow up issues. Home Carpet One is a great place. We needed a carpet for our dining room, and had been unable to find one in the dimensions we needed. We were wary of ordering a custom rug, but had little choice. HCO met our needs perfectly. The showroom is beautifully set up, with all the samples you could need to see set up on the wall, and smaller pieces of the actual carpet available to put on the floor. We were ably and non-intrusively assisted by a salesman, who helped us immeasurably (Mike Kruse in the Chicago office). We were able to get the rug we needed, at must less cost than we were expecting. Even better, the finished rug was available for pickup only 3 days after we ordered it. The rug is high quality, with an excellent binding. All 4 corners quickly flattened out soon after unrolling it. In sum, we highly recommend HCO for home rug/carpet needs (ps the tile selection looked very nice too). read more

After my recent experience as a customer of Home Carpet One, I could not have been more dissatisfied. I highly recommend anyone looking to purchase carpet to look elsewhere. The story begins in November 2009. Home Carpet One was recommended by a friend who purchased a rug there. We went in and the salesman sold us an area rug at a heavily discounted price. $1500 rug for about $750. Not the most expensive rug...but not cheap either. Immediately upon getting the rug home, we noticed it shed terribly. Literally once a day we had to sweep our entire condo to get rid of the wool. We thought it would get better....that it was because the rug was new. So, we gave it a couple of months, but it kept shedding. In early March, we let Home Carpet One know about the problem. After having been given the run-around for two months (repeated attempts to call without hearing back, stopping into the store), we were directed to Matt Youell, who was supposedly the only guy who could do anything for us. We went back and forth with him from April until June trying to come to a resolution. Weeks kept flying by because when we'd leave him a message, it would take a week for him to get back to us. We finally packed up the rug and dragged it into the store so that they could see why they should have never sold this rug to anyone. After some haggling, they took the rug and agreed to give us store credit for another rug, which we thought was reasonable. We ordered another rug that day (early June), and Matt told us we would have the rug in 3 weeks. 5 weeks later we call him up. A week later, he returns our call. He tells us it's taking a little longer to be delivered, should be another week. Now it's the beginning of August, and he calls us up and explains, the rug is in, but there's a "slight problem". There's a stain on the rug. Not a "slight" problem in my book because now were back to square one and have to order another rug. But he assures us it will be quicker this time. Fast forward to mid September when I, of course, have to call again to see if the new rug is in yet. When he calls me back several days later, he tells me the rug is in the factory ready to be bound....just one more day. A week later, he calls to tell me they have the wrong binding for the rug. He says he will overnight the binding to the factory.....no more than two days for sure. A week later, I call and he says the binding took longer to get there (obviously not shipped overnight). Finally the binding gets there and he says the guy can finish the binding in one day. It is now October. He calls to say it's finally finished and it will be delivered the next day. BUT, when he calls the next day, he informs me the rug is the wrong color! This couldn't get any more ridiculous. At the end we just gave up on this company and asked for a refund. They (Matt Youell in particular) are completely irresponsible and unprofessional. With each excuse, I felt they were stringing us along. The excuses just kept on coming and it was always someone else's fault. Looking back on the whole saga, I'm not even sure there was ever a rug ordered. So here I am, almost a year later, with no rug to show for my troubles. I would urge you not to patronize this store. read more

We were working with them on an insurance claim to get carpet. Unfortunately it was a very bad experience. They took way too long to process things. After they came out to do the inspection it was a week and a half before they prepared the estimate, and then it only happened after we called and emailed several times, and eventually threatened to go with another company. They always had a ton of excuses about computers crashing and difficult estimates, etc. Then when we went into the show room the sales person was extremely rude. He barely took the time to talk with us or answer our question. He simply showed us a wall of in stock carpet and told us which one he thought we should get. He didn't explain much about the different types, and even when we asked questions he barely answered them. He even threw the carpet pad at my partner, which was just weird. So finally we decided to go with another company, who took care of things ASAP and we are very happy we did because today the manager called. My partner explained about the poor service at the store and said we were not sure if it was because we were going through an insurance claim or if we were being discriminated against because we are a gay couple. Once my partner said we are a gay couple the manager actually hung up on him. He actually hung up on him! I have almost never experienced that kind of homophobia in Chicago, but if that's your thing I guess this is the company to go with. read more

We went to HCO hoping to get a great deal on some carpet for our condo. As soon as we walked in the door it was like walking the Salesman Gauntlet. You walk in the door and between sales people at their desks facing you. Which I assume is to assure the next person in line gets to you asap. Didn't make me too excited about the rest of our visit. As I expected, Bruce came up to us right away and offered help. My husband told him we're looking for carpet for a condo we're putting on the market. So he immediately steered us to the stock specials section. I appreciate wanting to offer us a good deal on the carpet, but then we stood there staring at the wall of carpet while Bruce stood there with us. No offer to point out the rest of the carpet, no offer to give us some time to look and talk things over, we all just stood there debating the merits of the beige berber wall of fame in front of us. I asked if there was more carpet in the room we had just walked through and went to look. Bruce followed me around the room as if I was going to steal something. I might look a little shady in my jeans and cubs t-shirt, but I don't think I could have fit a carpet remnant in my shirt or pants without someone noticing on my way out. I think it's a balancing act between making people feel like they aren't allowed to be alone in the store and ignoring customers, and HCO didn't achieve that balance with us. The carpet also ended up being a few hundred dollars more than Home Depot for a very close match of type, color, and style. The HCO carpet was their stock specials too, which means it's reduced because they buy it in bulk, so if we had picked a comparable carpet out of the room-o-carpet it would have been even more expensive. They had a huge selection of beautiful tiles though, since we aren't in the tiling zone I have no idea if they were expensive or not. Despite our not so great experience I will go back if I'm ever looking for tile to check out their prices. I will be ready to stand my ground on our space and opportunity to discuss with my husband without the salesmen joining the conversation next time though. read more

We had been working with an associate who was very nice, but he was gone one evening, and was going to set some samples out with his manager (I believe her name started with a "K"). That evening, when we stopped by the store, the manager was completely rude and unhelpful. She ordered a sample of a basketweave tile that we liked and said that it would arrive the following Monday (we stopped by on a Monday or Tuesday evening). Monday came and went - it's now been two weeks and I just received a call that our sample was in. We like to purchase from neighborhood/small stores, but this was just a terrible experience. The manager was so rude, and acted like we were wasting her time. We just purchased all of our tile from The Tile Shop on Halsted. It was a third of the price, in stock, and the people were wonderful to work with. Home Carpet One needs to teach its manager how to treat customers politely...especially with a new big box tile store on Halsted. They were completely uninterested in our business. read more

It's tough to leave this review at a "2", but I can't write it any other way. Had a fantastic experience at HC1 years ago, so 1st need we had we went right back. Our long term tenants moved out, time for new flooring. Great experience in the showroom, picked out new floor, even got a bunch of carpet samples for another project. Set a measurement appt, salesman will expedite the estimate, measurement guy was fantastic. So far, so good, right? Day I'm supposed to get the estimate, nothing. Next afternoon, call over, salesman is off today. I'm thinking NBD, anyone can write it right? A different salesman writes it, I'm appreciative, as I know it's going out of his way. But the estimate is higher than I thought, I see labor to move furniture, odd for an empty unit. Still NBD, I'm thinking it's just that it wasn't my salesman writing it up. Next day, I call my salesman. I said, hey, I know he was helping out, but could you look it over for me, some things look odd. My salesman erupts, interrupting me, raising his voice how they "sent their measurement person over FOR FREE". I ask him to please let me finish, that I think it's that he didn't know it was empty, and that all costs - labor & materials were in materials, which makes a difference on tax. He's still talking over me, telling me that "sorry I took a DAY OFF!" I told him I had been fine with everything, even if the estimate turned out to be right, right up to that call. My husband calls the next day to find someone else to talk to, ends up with the owner Joel. LOVED Joel, and that was before we knew he was the owner. We're back on track, costs of moving furniture doesn't exist is gone, tax appropriately calc'd, and he said, a discount. Delivery guys were great, still back on track, until... Installation day(s). I meet the installer, he needs me to take him around the unit, asks what I'm supposed to have done. Fine, it's a 800 sq ft unit, doesn't take long. He's upset building rules are 9a start, upset his truck is illegally parked and the building wants it moved, and upset that I said I was expecting new baseboards when he said there were none. He tells me it will cost me more unless I want him to leave the old ones up. I call my husband, we read the 'new baseboards' on our purchase order, and he says "fine, but you don't have any". I said I just want what I paid for. I call Ben, who manages the warehouse side (I think?). Ben's on it, he'll get it straightened out, baseboards were there all along. Awesome, now we're back on track again! Until... Day 3 of install, day to be done, they're gone, but it's a mess. My front closet shelves weren't reset, pieces in different places (I reinstall). My kitchen and part of the walls are coated in dust (I wipe it down). The doors they took down aren't rehung. There's a piece of flooring that's raised and a gap to the next board. I put what I can back together, and call Ben. Installer to come back the next day to fix the board, rehang the doors. (Turns out the doors needed cut down, makes sense, height of floor changed. But don't just leave and for sure not in disarray.). Now the installer is going to be 30mins to 60mins late for the appt (nope, no advance call, I had to call to see what was going on). Now we need to reschedule (sigh)... 3rd times the charm, right!? Or, not...board that unlocked is mostly fixed, but installer argues it's perfect (it's not), with clear evidence, he's still arguing. I give up on the board, close enough. Then he's befuddled by the closet doors, one side was attached w drywall anchors, what to do? His assistant has a workable solution, fill the holes from the prior anchors, let dry, reinstall. He tells me "you need someone else out here anyway for the other door, you can have them do this too". Awesome, if only I could do that with my job....hey someone else will be here anyway, can you just have them do my job too? It falls entirely off rails when the installer is raising his voice at me, how he's "not happy about any of this either". I ask him..out of respect for others, can you please lower your voice, I'm right here...I try to set another appt for the final 1/2 door re-install. He wants me to do a permission to enter, I say no, I want to be here to see the final product. He's upset - again. "Wooooowwww, really? Really, wow?" So I ask, isn't it fair that I see the finished work before you go? "No! No, I mean, yes!", grabs his tools, and storms out. I talked to Ben, I said...I know this is a risk on dealing with the doors myself, but I cannot meet with this installer again in my lifetime. In the end, Joel and Ben are great. We all wanted this experience to be different, but as they say...how it begins is how it ends. And it's sad to see the carpet square from HC1 in my bedroom, still picked out, ready to go, but I can't see risking an experience like this again. read more

What a terrible experience! First I contacted Home Carpet One and began working with George. He was supposed to get back to me about engineered hard wood or laminate flooring, and I didn't hear from him for weeks. Any attempt to email or leave phone messages were unanswered. I posted a negative review on here and the owner contacted me and offered to help. Apparently George had a family emergency and was unable to respond. Fine. I still think the owner should have followed up on George's customers, but I removed my negative review and decided to try again. BIG MISTAKE! I went into the store to meet with George. I picked out flooring, someone came out and measured, and my quote came back unreasonably high. I contacted George and he said he'd see what he could do with the installers. I emailed back and said I'd be interested in picking out a less expensive option and I never heard from him again. So I emailed again and no response. Appalling. I contacted another company and am much happier with their customer service. read more

After Empire failed to show up to do my installation, I marched myself over to Home Carpet One to set something up. Eddy was very professional and helped me pick out something appropriate for a rental unit. I was in and out of there in less time than I was on hold trying to cancel my Empire order. The measurement guy showed up the following Monday at 7 a.m. so I didn't have to take any more time away from work (note: I took two days off to deal with Empire before they just didn't show up to install). That process took about 30 seconds, and I was on my way. We were given a late morning (10-noon) general time frame for installation. The guys showed up at 10:10, and were fully done, cleaned up and out of there within an hour. Oh, and best of all? With tax and everything, it was only slightly more than HALF of what Empire quoted us. Overall, we are very happy with the job they did and the customer service. If you are looking for carpeting, I'd stay away from the big advertisers and go with a smaller, more local outfit. Home Carpet One has earned our repeat business! read more
