In 2022, I requested an energy assessment for temperature differences. Luke the technician was professional, and did a thorough job. However, the evaluation mainly focused on upstairs ducts, and bathroom vents, but didn't address my primary concerns. When I received the quote, it was extremely high, so I decided to go with a different company--a decision I ultimately regretted. When I tried to return and schedule service with the company, I was told Luke doesnt work there anymore, so I was assigned to Ben. I requested to do another energy audit because the initial evaluation didnt provide CFM readings from Living Room and Dining room which is a colder area of the house. He was going to charge another $595 for another full audit, I asked for a discount and he said no. He said its not needed as he has all the information. When I agreed, he emails me back the following day to cancel because I had previously hired another provider due to Budget reasons. I find it disappointing that service would be refused based on my past decision to explore other options. This approach doesn't reflect the level of customer care I would expect. read more

HEM was amazing in many, many ways. But the most important thing is: THEY FIXED MY HOUSE! Our top floor was always in the 80s with 75% humidity. After the energy audit and bathroom venting, air sealing, and insulation work, it is now the same temperature as the rest of the house and 50% humidity all the time! And the hvac system is no longer straining to keep up! This was worth every penny. Do not go with a cheap quick fix. Scott and team really care and can be trusted. The 3 star review of Home Energy Medics is an average of the 5* rating of the home energy audit performed by Luke and the aggressively expensive quote (1*) and hard sell to resolve the challenges in our home. First the good: I emailed Scott and an appointment for a home energy audit was scheduled in just a few days. Luke came with all of his assessment equipment and was in my home for several hours. He checked the entire house very carefully-from the HVAC performance, to the adequacy of the insulation in various rooms and above the garage. Importantly, he evaluated how leaky our house is (very), and walked around the house with an infrared camera documenting the areas where we are losing heat. We spoke briefly about what he found while he was here. He then emailed a relatively detailed assessment of the issues and then proposed improvements to make our house more energy efficient and comfortable. The mitigation plan he sent to us initially didn't have prices, just the recommendations. A week or two later, we spoke by Zoom to review both of these documents and he was very clear and forthcoming. Now the not so good: the costs listed to correct the issues in our house were 50-100% higher than 'reasonable'. When on Zoom, the improvement plan listed the prices they would charge to do the suggested work. I spoke with 2 professionals in the industry, both of whom said "Wow" when I told them the prices in the breakdown in the proposal. One said, "This is just too much." After being quoted a high total price, in the tens of thousands(!), I need to give my decision some time to sit, so I can think things through . After all, the quote is valid for 30 days. About an hour or two after receiving the quote and contract, Luke called me to say that my 'home is on his way home' and he wanted to know if he could pick up a check for the deposit (even the 50% deposit would exceed my credit card limit). I responded that I needed time to read the fine print. Today, Luke called to see how he could move things along. I told him that his inspection was excellent but that the prices he provided to resolve the issues were just too high. I also asked him to send me some of the infrared pictures that he took (that I do not have) so that I can present and discuss the issues with contractors who I will choose to use. I'm still waiting to receive these. I'll update this review if/when I receive them. Bottom line: they provided a fantastic assessment of what's the matter. But I would NOT use them as the contractor to correct the problem(s) in your house without getting at least one other quote. It's rather unfortunate. In reading other reviews, several other people have written that "it was extremely expensive." BE CAREFUL. read more

Thus far there have been no new leaks and each room in our home is noticeably more comfortable. I cannot be certain that the problem has been completely resolved since the follow-up work was completed in September as temperatures started to fall. I live in a condo with an upstairs neighbor. I hired home energy medics to complete soundproofing on the ceilings and stairs. The sound from footsteps has been vastly reduced and is now much easier to tolerate in the areas where they completed work. (It is basically not possible to eliminate footstep noise completely without also renovating the floor above.) They were able to start the project early, and kept me apprised of progress and any unexpected issues. They also accommodated my requests to expand the scope of the work even after they had already started. I was very pleased overall and want to hire them to complete the rest of the place at some point. read more

I hired Home Energy Medics in May 2020 to provide a sound proofing solution for the ceiling of my master bedroom in my recently-purchased 2002 condo. After I moved in, unfortunately I realized that due to a lack of insulation between units, I could hear my neighbors above me in their master bedroom so distinctly that it was almost as if they were in my bedroom with me. Due to this situation, and as a light sleeper to begin with, I was unable to sleep soundly due to the acoustic noise (talking, TV) and impact noise (footsteps/clacking shoes on a hardwood floor, with wood joists and minimal insulation between my neighbor's sub floor and my ceiling). Based on my research, there are not many companies that provide comprehensive, professional soundproofing services to individual homeowners in the DMV area. Given the structural & technical elements of this work, in my view it is important to get the job done right. Home Energy Medics did the job very professionally and swiftly, though it is important to note that it was extremely expensive ($$$). Scott the owner is an excellent communicator, very smart, and enthusiastic about his work. The crew was very clean, kind and respectful. Now that the job is over, and I am waiting for the green glue to cure over the next 30-60 days, the acoustic noise is completely gone from my bedroom. I can still hear footsteps, though they are much less distinct, and I am able to sleep with a fan on. The footsteps now sound reassuringly "normal", as in, how I've heard them in other apartments and condos. My neighbors no longer sound as if they are in my bedroom. We've had several bad experiences with contractors over the years. So, we were hesitant at first when we hired Home Energy Medics to fix a couple problems created by previous contractors. However, I'm very glad we did hire them. Not only have they fixed a ventilation issue in our attic and repaired the foam insulation, but we will also be using them to correct a few other issues with our house. Throughout the process everyone from Home Energy Medics has been professional, kind, and respectful. Their work has been quick, thorough and they took great care to keep our house neat. We've had a lot of negative experiences with contractors who didn't care about the state they left our house in, so working with Home Energy Medics has been a relief as they took excellent care of our house at every step. Brian performed a blower door test and discussed things that could be done in our house. Oscar and his team installed a new dryer vent and sealed venting holes while a roofing team installed ventilation in the attic. Home Energy Medics completed work in our home in 2014 (energy audit) and 2015 (attic air sealing/insulation). Since then, we have received multiple blast requested from the company to provide them a five star review on yelp and/or Angie's List. Instead, we provided the following review via email and have never received a response from the company. In summary, we paid an exorbitant price for mediocre quality work and would not recommend. As a result of Dave's excellent communication and great work during our home energy audit, we hired the team to air seal and insulate the attic in our home. That team, led by Adam, fell short of the standard Dave set, particularly with respect to communication and work quality. On the first day, Adam canceled mid-morning, after we called asking when he would begin. The next three days, his crew worked sporadically and on one occasion, for no more than two hours. As a result, on the last day, Adam explained that he wouldn't finish in time and that he would need to "stop by" the following week. I wonder if the crew could have finished on schedule, if they worked the hours Adam communicated they would work. Adam claimed to encounter unforeseen issues during air sealing that resulted in cost increases. Later, after several phone calls the week after the project was scheduled to end, we were able to get Adam to return to finish the job. His work was rushed and required me to do touch ups where he failed to seal and/or removed paint around LED retrofits. After completing the blower door test, he provided the results verbally but we struggled for weeks to get the complete written report. When we did, the results didn't match the number he provided verbally. In fact, the figures in the report were considerably better than the actual improvement gains he stated we achieved, so we have some doubts about the work we received and whether there are other gaps between what we paid for and that which we received. Overall, we feel that Home Energy Medics completed mediocre quality work for a very high price and that we would have been better served using another firm or doing the work ourselves. We regret that we had a negative experience and are unable to provide a positive review of Home Energy Medics. read more

I live in a townhome in Arlington - a 4 story brick unit, constructed in the early 80's. I've lived here for 8 years and throughout the entire time, we have experienced issues with duct condensation in many places - completely on the interior of the house. We tried many solutions to fix the problem and nothing seemed to help. Then, this winter when Arlington county had the very nasty cold streak, I came home one day to a flood of water from a pipe that had frozen and burst on the interior of my house. I had heard many times of pipes along exterior walls freezing but never a pipe feeding a kitchen sink 5+ feet on the interior of a house. It was during the investigation of this problem that we discovered the root cause of both that and the condensation problems in the summer - outside air infiltration. I called Home Energy Medics (H.E.M.) on a Thursday night and left a message. My call was returned that same night by Barbara who was super nice and very helpful. She immediately got me on the schedule that weekend on a Saturday which I greatly appreciated. Her husband, Scott, showed up right on time at 9am with a bit of high tech equipment to perform an energy (air infiltration) audit on my home. Almost 7.5 hours later Scott was still in my house explaining things to me. He is super knowledgeable and infinitely patient with my many questions. I don't think he had any intention to stay that long but his passion for his job and his commitment to customer service kept him on site digging deeper to find the problems. He used an infrared camera as well as a blower door to test the amount of leakage and WOW! For the first time the frozen pipe and summer duct condensation were no longer a mystery. The amount of leakage between floors (in the joist band) was astounding. As a result, Scott and his team put together a plan to remedy the situation and then explained it to me in great detail. At it's core, the plan was simple - open up access points in my walls and ceilings as necessary, use their special blend of materials to create a tight seal from the outside air and then repair the access points as required. While simple in theory, the actual work required much more coordination and focus. This is where our excellent project manager came into play. We worked with Lauren from beginning to end and throughout the whole process she kept us very informed and made us feel comfortable. Her attention to detail and passion for her work are both very evident. One of the most compelling parts of the project was that H.E.M. insists on performing quality assurance checks on their sealing work prior to beginning the repairs. This ensures that their crew didn't miss anything and also sheds light on any potential new issues that might have gone unnoticed during the initial inspection. Most importantly this QA, work while a bit of a pain for them, filled me with confidence that the above listed problems with duct condensation and pipe freezing would actually be taken care of once and for all. As a home owner that has been fighting these issues for the last 8 years I was very happy about this. All in all the work started on time and was completed on time despite the fact that additional issues were found and a couple of small change orders had to be executed during the process. This was key because we were working against the clock (my pregnant wife was due only a couple of weeks after the work was to end). From beginning to end my wife and I were very pleased with the whole process. It has been less than a week since the work was completed and I can honestly already tell a difference in the overall comfort level of the home. I can't wait to see the reduction in energy costs! I would absolutely recommend Scott/Lauren and their team for any sort of home energy consulting. I also plan to engage them for a home inspection when we eventually move. read more

We have lived in our 3 story Alexandria town home for 2 years . . . and put up with 2 miserable summers and winters. There was a significant temperature gradient between the second and third floors, which meant that our bedroom reached 90-95 degrees in the summer with hair-frizzing humidity indoors, despite AC use. We tried to attack the problem first with replacement windows and fortunately came across HEM before committing to that investment. We decided that the home energy audit may be worth our money, especially once we realized that the report would include an itemized priority list. Preston did our audit and spent a lot of time explaining the process and the immediate findings. About 2 weeks later, Scott met with us (on a weekday evening, which was appreciated so both of us could be present) and went through all of the issues and potential fixes. Having done a little of our own research in the interim, we were very satisfied with the report and recommendations and signed the contract that night. We planned to have our attic insulation removed and upgraded, air sealing in the attic, LED fittings for air sealing in our recessed lighting on the third floor, and Aerosealing of our ducts. Two weeks later, with Lauren as project manager, the work started. Despite an initial estimate of the work taking 2 weeks, they were done in 4 days. The team was very professional and Lauren emailed updates throughout the week. We were so touched that Lauren even took our dog for a quick walk one day because she was worried about her whining while people were in the home. And sensing our slight obsession with our canine first-born, she even emailed us some modern art -- thermal imaging pictures of the pooch. Truly over-the-top, above-and-beyond service! But more important than our new artwork is the fact that it is over 90 degrees today and our AC is not running constantly. More importantly, there is literally no difference in the temperatures of the second vs. third floor. We thought this was an impossible goal, but HEM achieved it. The work wasn't cheap, but it's a small price to pay for being able to sleep without sweating through another hot summer. And we look forward to lower heating and cooling bills over the coming years. We recommend HEM without reservation. Even if we had not taken advantage of the opportunity to have the work done, the home energy audit itself was well worth its price to identify and prioritize ways to improve comfort and decrease our energy footprint. read more

I picked this company based on the stellar reviews, even though they were so booked up that they couldn't come out for months. I decided I was willing to wait for the advertised quality. We are new to the area and had two new strictly indoor cats. I let the two auditors (Dave and Tom) know that I was worried about the cats getting out, and offered to shut them into the basement. They assured me that it wouldn't be a problem, that they needed the basement doors to be open but they would be very careful when going in and out the front doors. At some point they accidentally let one of the cats, and either didn't notice or noticed and didn't tell me. I didn't figure out that a cat was missing (we thought she might be hiding because of all the action with the work), and I called Dave to ask about it. He denied that it could possibly have been them (really, who else?) and then was not at all sensitive about the situation. It took us hours to find the cat (thankfully, alive) outside, and when I called him to let him know, he didn't seem to think it mattered. He was completely immune to the concept that 1) people might like their pets; and 2) don't like their pets put into danger by a contractor. At NO point did he offer an apology or show any accountability. That said, I wouldn't post a negative review based only on that. When he came to the house to give us our report, he was awful. He talked and talked and talked without getting to the point. The estimates were greatly ~18K to remedy the issues if we used their company. We ended up using another company and the total was closer to $4K. Additionally, they were in the house for 5+ hours conducting the audit. I had a similar audit at my last place for half the price and they got it done in less time. And finally, because we had only been in the house a few months, they couldnt' do the full analysis (they wanted a year of energy bills) which 1) they didn't tell me in advance and 2) they still charged the same. read more

What a waste of 300 dollars. I was told they could do the energy audit quickly and then a contractor could follow up quickly with recommended improvements. Our main issue was a drafty cold bathroom that needed insulation. We got the audit and didn't receive the report until 21 days later after multiple requests. The quote for the bathroom fix was 300 bucks. What a great value! Let's do it! We were then informed that there is a 2500 dollar minimum. This was never disclosed prior to getting the audit. Then the auditor was making revisions to the report based on potential combination of fixes and the cost of the bathroom insulation kept changing, wildly. We finally gave up and ate the 300 bucks. If you have at least 2500 worth of work, I would still go somewhere else. The process is disconnected and lacks transparency. The auditors/contractors are apparently independent of the Home Energy company. Stay away. read more

I have a very tall townhouse which creates a problem for my HVAC system. The upper level is always hot and humid. I've called several HVAC companies to check on my system and each company I've called out to service my system has said my systems are running perfect. One of the companies recommended purchasing a dehumidifier to help pull the moisture from the air thus making the air conditioning more efficient in cooling down the air. The suggestion worked but who wants to be running a dehumidifier 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? After much research I came across Home Energy Medics. By the time I called them to set up an appointment I was so frustrated with my house, the home builder, mother nature for her sun and humidity, and all the asphalt and concrete in the DC area that contributed to the high temperatures. Home Energy came in and performed an energy audit on the house. The energy audit took about 4 hours. They closed down my house and used a blower door to depressurize the entire house. Then they set the temperature inside to the opposite of what the temperature is outside (when I initially had the audit performed it was cool outside so they cranked the heat inside the house). They then tested for air leakage and infiltration using infrared cameras throughout the house to look for the leaks. They also evaluated my insulation and checked for combustion safety. I'm sure they did other fancy things but the house was so unbearably hot, I left and ran errands. The written report came a few days later. I'll admit the cost to fix my inefficient house was not something I was prepared for however, Arlington County gives a tax credit for making your house more energy efficient which helped to offset the cost of their recommendations. All I cared about was having a cooler upper level (no offense to Greenpeace). The company came in and tore up some drywall to get to some areas of the house that was leaking air as well as other things from their report. The final verdict? My house was given back to me in the same state as when I handed it over to them (if not better). They fixed the drywall, repainted my walls, and cleaned the house. WOW! I wish they had to tear up drywall on the first floor too because I could use a fresh coat of paint in the living room and dining room. HA! And the painters they used were awesome. I might call them to come back and paint the rest of the house. You can't even tell where the drywall was cut. The crew did an excellent job. Everyone was so professional (on time, clean workspace, well mannered) they exceeded my expectations. I'm no longer using my dehumidifier and the air on the upper level is soooo much better. My only regret is waiting 8 years to find Home Energy Medics to fix my house. I wish I knew about them sooner. It was worth every penny and I couldn't be happier with their service. read more

The contractor they sent to do the audit seemed seasoned, but just about everything he said was contradicting something he said just previous and he couldn't stay on topic - rambling in all different directions. I'm glad to have received the list of things that can be done to improve my home's efficiency, but the cost of having HEM perform the work is way above market average so I will be looking elsewhere. read more

I found this company online when I wanted to get additional quotes for upgrading the insulation of my attic after I received an energy audit from another company. Home Energy Medics was a breath of fresh air - they couldn't have been nicer from the moment I called; they were responsive and seem to really care about their customers; they were happy to schedule around me. I ended up hiring them to air seal and insulate (blown cellulose) my attic, in addition to installing ducts and vents for two bathroom fans. Even though I didn't hire them for an energy audit, their lead auditor Lauren directed the whole project and was so easy to work with. She was clearly knowledgeable, very responsive by email or text, a great listener about our home's challenges, and explained everything in an easily understandable way and without any pressure whatsoever. We have used Home Energy Medics who first did a very thorough audit of our house with a great deal of knowledge, advanced technology and care. We have an old Cape Cod house to which we added an addition a number of years ago and there were a number of insulation issues, plus the problem of the upper floor becoming too hot in the summer. The audit itself took Lauren and an assistant five hours to do the preliminary report and then Lauren wrote up the report, which was extremely detailed and very well presented. She discussed the findings with us in person and divided up the work to be done into four or five phases, each costed out in case we couldn't do it all at once. It's not surprising that they found a number of things that should be done to improve the house, its insulation, energy efficiency and even basic safety (that was a bit more of a shock, admittedly). I was so impressed that I wanted to get it all done immediately but the cost to do everything was not cheap, so we have so far just done the first phase, to get the things repaired that were safety hazards. We hope to do the rest by the spring of next year. It's been so far an absolute pleasure to work with Lauren and her team; I know that we are in extremely reliable hands with the best people doing the job, both diagnosing the issues and doing the repairs. The people who do the repairs are chosen by Lauren and are clearly very experienced in what they do. I would recommend this organization to anyone needing to do this sort of work without hesitation -- but as with most or all quality work, don't necessarily assume that all the required repairs are going to be cheap. read more
