This place came recommended by a friend and was supposed to be our 2nd destination with my daughter, brother and 2 of my daughters friends. We were celebrating my daughter's 21st birthday and had a plan of visiting Home Grown's bar after finishing lunch at Klondike kate's. We entered and were greeted and told that we couldn't go to the bar for a cocktail since no seats were available. I am visiting my son at the university of Delaware for graduation weekend and I happened to stumble upon homegrown. We sat down and the ambiance was lovely! We were immediately graciously greeted by our waitress Hannah. I loved having Hannah as our waitress!!! She was so friendly and considerate to my allergies of pineapple, tree nuts, carrots, potatoes, apples, and gluten. I'm serious you have to come here and try the veggie burger split it w a friend for $10 and you will not regret it. Now the beer selection. Oh boy you are in for a treat. The chicken nachos were so good! We went on a weekday after I got off work and it wasn't busy. Outside I don't think there was any seating, but inside there were only about two other parties seated. It was very cold inside, though. They could raise the temp on the thermostat just a tad. The croque monsieur was very good, as were the sweet potato fries. Only complaint about the sandwich was that the cheese wasn't melted. Other people in my party got wraps with sweet potatoes fries, but they didn't like how theirs were cooked. They were a little dark and I guess burnt. The waitress tried to argue with them and convince them to eat them because she likes them that way?? Weird. Anyway, then she said "well we don't have anymore sweet potato fries. This was the last order for the day." It's so early in the day for you to be out of sweet potato fries. But then, the table next to us who sat down after us, got two orders of identical sweet potato fries! So either the waitress lied when she said they didn't have anymore, OR they just gave those people next to us my two sisters fries that they had already touched and tasted! Both of those are pretty gross! For that reason alone, the deception or the unsanitary-ness of it all, gives this place 3 stars. But damn, those nachos were so good. read more

Came on a Sunday morning. The decor gives you a chill, artsy feel especially with the low lighting. We came for the mimosa special (build your own mimosas for $18 a person) but the food was great as well and had reasonable prices. For the mimosa special, we got served the champagne and we had to walk over a short ways to 3 juice and 3 fruit options to mix with our champagne. I appreciate that they gave you options on what you can mix. You get to have as many mimosas as you want for 2 hours which I feel like was worth the money. For an appetizer we got the fries with a creamy crab meat dip and old bay which came in a bucket, so it was as filling as it was delicious. For entrees, me and my boyfriend got the boneless wings. The sauce on the chicken was great, and the wings were nice and tender. Personally, I could have had mine little more cooked but they were so tender and juicy I did not mind. Overall, the atmosphere was great, the waitress we had was awesome and made sure we were satisfied, and multiple mimosas on a late Sunday morning is always a plus. On Friday, February 16, I was invited to lunch at Homegrown with five other ladies in their late 60s early 70s. Two of us arrived at 11:45 for our 12 PM reservation. The restaurant was almost empty and I could see our table set with menus and water. The manager, Tyler, said he would not seat the two of us, until at least half of the party arrived. We pointed out that our table was ready and they were not busy, so could he reconsider and allow us to wait at our table for the others. He again said no, we needed to wait in the foyer area. Another patron came in and was speaking with us and I told her why we were standing there and not seated. Tyler came back and looked at me and said if I complained again, he would not seat me at all. I was appalled at his audacity and rudeness. I would have left immediately, but needed to stay in order to meet the other four ladies that were coming l. I told him that I was going to be writing a review and calling the owner of the restaurant. Due to his impertinence and rude behavior - I do not plan to frequent this restaurant again. on another note, the food was very tasty and our server did a great job. I don't think I've ever had a bad experience here. They update their menu, seasonally it seems, which is nice. They have a great beer and cocktail selection and good rotating specials. They also have a really good kids menu. We usually go for dinner but they serve a good brunch too! I would recommend ordering any of their crab dishes, like the crab dip or the crab fries. I'm originally from Newark and have been to Home Grown probably 100 times at this point. For my family, it's the go to place. Now I've gotta be honest about one thing, you have to know what you enjoy and you've gotta know what to order here. If you go out on a limb, there is a possibility you may be disappointed. However, once you find the right things to order, this place is a true gem. I can't go here without ordering the buffalo cauliflower wings - they are a must. And my go to meal is the Cobb wrap with fries - I never get tired of it. My only true qualm with Home Grown is that it can get pretty pricey and that is the reason that I don't go here more often. The staff is always friendly, though, and always attentive. I also appreciate that the servers always try to accommodate any diet. Would definitely recommend Home Grown so long as you aren't looking for something very cheap :) read more

I came here with my family right when they opened for brunch on Sunday morning (9:30am). The venue is pretty spacious with an eclectic feel to it. Our waitress was very friendly and quick to refill our waters and coffee. The menu is filled with items that you can make vegetarian/vegan by subbing a few of the ingredients, which I love! I ordered the Creamed Chipped Beef (roasted garlic and cheddar biscuit, smothered in chipped seitan and white gravy, with two eggs) with home fries. It was delicious, and a big enough portion to last me two meals. My mom got the French Toast, which she said was amazing. My dad got the Home Grown Breakfast with their house-made vegan bacon as his meat, and he let me try it - it was so good. I don't know what it's made of, but it's super tasty with a great crumbly texture. Overall, this is a great brunch spot if you're ever in Newark! read more

We came in for Brunch on a Sunday and I was excited to have the bottomless Mimosa bar and the steak wings poutine I was reading about before I arrived. It was busy and there was a wait so we hunkered down at the bar and I was able to start my mimosa there. That's a decent deal at $18 if you drink enough. They had a variety of juices to choose from and it looked like there were fresh fruit options though in the time I was there it was never stocked. It was always a bowl of juice and seeds with a sad spoon. So that was a little of a bummer. The steak wings poutine (described French fries, cheese curds, fried steak tips, grilled asparagus, Guinness gravy, two any style cage-free eggs 16) was a complete bummer because the meat was fried like a country fried steak and must have been over-fried cause it was impossible to chew and was really really gristly. The gravy was tasty and the egg was fine. But the cheese curds completely melted into the gravy and I couldn't tell it was there and the asparagus were buried under and pretty much melted. I tried to eat it I really tried but I just couldn't get through it. They took it off and apologized and that was fine. It just made me sad. My husband had the buffalo chicken waffle and that looked good. I'd go back to try again when in the area but this visit left me sad. read more

I was contacted by the management who wanted me to "further explain" my review which IMHO was fairly succinct and to the point. She vociferously defended the service stating that "9 minutes after being served a large group appetizer is appropriate, maybe it should have been 10 to 15". In all my experiences at restaurants the server usually walks over to a table and either discerns if the patrons are finished with their appetizer or asks if they can bring out the dinners. I have been hesitant to eat here because I like meat and I do not like the vegan/vegetarian concept. I was under the assumption that this place fell into that category. My friends were coming into town and they have many dietary restrictions. Lactose intolerant, gluten free, etc. Whatever the issue, they have it. Every single time I come here the food and service never disappoints. My mom got a pomegranate Bellini (they have several flavors to choose from including a bottomless option should you choose for Sunday brunch). She ordered the avocado toast--Avocado mash, alfalfa sprouts, cherry tomatoes, capers, smoked salmon, over easy cage-free egg, rye toast, served with field greens and their house made vinaigrette. She loved it. Said it was a great alternative to a bagel and lox. I got the BLT-Thick cut bacon, butter lettuce, tomato, house-made apple butter aioli, Muenster cheese, over easy cage-free egg, wheat bread, served with home fries. I did have to send it back from crispier bacon but with the quick fix it was delicious. We then ordered the peanut butter cheesecake for dessert. It had raspberry drizzle over it with a chocolate crust. Almost like a peanut butter and jelly combination. I will continue to go back and highly recommend. Falsely advertised with print so small you cannot read it at the bottom of the menu - waiter told us that the food was gluten free but later we found it was not. All good is cross contaminated. Went here last night for the first time with 5 friends and enjoyed it. Everyone liked their food, especially the two girls who got the grain bowl. Two girls had cocktails and they enjoyed those also. The ambiance was good and the art on the walls was very cool which gave it a nice vibe. I noticed they have a full bar and bar area so I'll definitely be back for drinks at some point. Service was good also. They were accommodating for a group our size, let us make reservations in advance and we're flexible as some of our group was running a bit late. If you are celiac do not eat here. It looked like an amazing place for me to eat due to the menu and was so excited but it's made for people who have a sensitivity.
