HomerLink -- how to spell bait & switch
August 2025, I decided to add a FranklinWH battery to my existing solar. Per positive reviews I contacted HomeLink and connected with Tyler Ingley, sales (8-18-15) Tyler requested pics of my meters, main electric panel, DWP bills, etc which I sent (8-19-25) He put together a slick proposal including a Google maps overhead of our property showing the 2 houses on it. I told him my meters were on the back house where DWP's feed is. From there my house is connected via underground conduits. On a portion of my roof were panels of a defunct solar pool water heater that I was removing and wanted to replace with solar voltaic. At this time there was a huge demand for solar upgrades because Fed Tax rebates were ending 12-31-25. This was causing serious supply chain concerns. Tyler assured me that HomeLink was having no issues getting equipment. My job would be done in time and I would qualify for approx. $8k Fed tax rebate. Sounded great, hook was baited. I signed HomeLink's contract (8-20-25) HomeLink sent a tech to survey my layout (8-26-25). He was a novice; kept calling the office for instructions. I was on the roof with him to inspect my solar voltaic panels and pointed out the solar pool heater now half dismantled and would be gone in a few days. Roofers were scheduled for the following week to redo the roof. When the panels were gone and roof redone, I took pics, sent to Tyler (9-13-25). He texted, would update my file. I told him I would be gone 9-16 to 10-22. He asked if I wanted the job done while away. I responded when back. He posted a thumbs-up emoji.
(10-20-25) Texted Tyler regarding scheduling my job -- I would be home in 2 days. (10-31-25) Texted again about scheduling. Tyler replied "your layout is tricky". Hmm, felt like the switch. (11-7-25) Inquired again. Tyler texted; "...unfortunate news from Operations" -- Voltaic panels could not be installed because water panels needing to be removed - main service panel is on other building and would require extensive trenching. After a few tries, finally got Tyler on the phone. "What water panels?" He said the pool water heater. I reminded him I had sent pics 2 months ago of the new roof void of panels. He hadn't updated my file. My main service panel is in my house! The inexperienced tech HomeLink sent got this all wrong. There was no need for trenching. Okay for no solar voltaic, the the FranklinWH is what I wanted in the first place. I was concerned that time was running out. Tyler assured me he would get it all corrected and my job would be done before the deadline. Hook baited again. (11-11-25) Tyler texted; there's another problem. No place to locate the Franklin aGate (system's brain). It had to be within certain parameters to the main panel. I looked up Franklin's specs which didn't jibe per what Tyler was saying. Checked LA Building and Safety requirements which were in line with Franklin's specs.
A few days later, Tyler and I had our final conversation. HomeLink was dropping my job (1) trenching would cost $7k...HomeLink had no capacity to do this. I reiterated, no need for trenching! (2) Per Tyler, the FranklinWH battery weighs 350 lbs. 'How were they going to get it placed.' I asked, 'Isn't that HomeLink's job?' I explained there was a drive on our property; bringing in heavy stuff was no issue. No matter what I said, Tyler's responses where more excuses...a far cry from his initial 'no problem, HomeLink will get this done.' In my book; classic bait and switch.
I was disappointed, frustrated, ready to give up. No way to get a backup battery installed in time for the Fed rebate. I decided to try one last time. Per reviews contacted another FranklinWH installer.
NOTE: The reason I have waited to post this review was to give HomeLink the benefit of the doubt; maybe my layout was all wrong.
NOW A REALITY CHECK: a FranklinWH has been added to my system. Passed final LA Building and Safety inspection (2-17-26).
There is no joy writing this negative review. In my case, HomeLink totally failed to deliver and deserves to own this. My opinion; bait and switch is dishonest. On top of that, by HomeLink jacking me till late in the year caused me to miss out on approx. $8k Fed tax rebate; a big ouch.
If you are in the market for a FranklinWH - it's fantastic. I encourage you to read my Yelp review of GREEN CONVERGENCE that did my install. NOTE: little difference $$ between bids from H L and GREEN CONVERGENCE. Two technicians executed the install. No aGate placement issue. No FranklinWH battery weight or placement issues. NO TRENCHING! Do yourself a favor and read my GREEN CONVERGENCE review...the choice will be crystal clear... read more
