The staff is friendly and attentive but they just need more time to run the business more smoothly. We were there on the second day they opened so they were still in a mess with bad waiting time. I decided to stop in here on my lunch break and I am honestly upset about what a waste of time this ended up being. They have a sign outside advertising combos. Beware though that if you want to order said advertised combo, you specifically have to ask for the SPECIAL combo, otherwise they will give you the OTHER combo they also have listed on their menu. Burrito is not huge but doesn't need to be - great fillings. I've also had their torta and it was excellent. When we've eaten inside, we've always gotten friendly service. It's small for dining in; maybe 3 tables for two people each. When we've picked up food, they're very good with their time estimates. Really amazing people here, but sadly the food wasn't what I expected. Food: Beef empanadas: The empanada pastry was really well made but the beef was really dry, and honestly felt heavily under seasoned. Chicken empanadas: Similar to the beef, the pastry was done really well but the chicken was really dry and would avoid ordering this. Came on a wrong day. Argentina vs Netherlands in World Cup. Ordered 3 tortas, and a burrito. I placed this order online and I was literally right across the street leaving my son's piano class. Within that short walk to Homemade, my order was already ready. I couldn't believe it because I've ordered before and waited quite a long time for smaller orders in the past. Upon entering the restaurant, I noticed all the workers were sitting in the dining area watching the World Cup. When I got home, all of my sandwiches were no longer hot. I couldn't help but feel that they pre-made their entire menu so that they can catch the World Cup without any customer distractions. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, I'm saying I totally understand! It's the World Cup! It was no biggie, I reheated it them with my panini press and it actually ended up tasting better this way with a crispy toasty bread. Verdict - their tortas are pretty underrated. Good portion and the price hasn't increased dramatically during inflation times. For the burrito, I wished it came with a little more tortilla chips. Cheap and yummy tacos right here on Austin St. This place is capitalizing on the new Birria taco trend and did it very well- they are delicious! The consome dip was very rich and flavorful. I could drink the consome as a big bowl of soup! I was also impressed with the al pastor, shrimp, and fish tacos. I found the chicken, steak, and chorizo tacos to be good but not amazing. If you're getting the birria tacos, I'd recommend only ordering those for your meal, and if not, make sure you eat those 3 first because they don't stay hot/crispy for long and they are definitely better FRESH. Also, beware that you might end up waiting longer for your order than they say. They told me 10 minutes for pickup but it ended up being 20-25... but they were super busy so I understand. Love this place, I use to live in the area and there's nothing else like it. Just some food trucks that is as closest as traditional as you will get. Sure there's a couple Tex mex spots but it's not the same. Good place for take out Mexican food. They have tacos, burritos, quesadillas, horchata, agua de Jamaica. I was excited to have this place open up for more variety. Finally went and got take out. Decided to try their tacos, so ordered one of each. Maybe I got them on bad night, but the food wasn't what I expected. The beef taco, was basically ground beef without any seasoning. The fish taco, was unrecognizable. Basically the food was tasteless. When I asked if they guacamole, they said no, but has a sauce instead. Don't quite understand how a taqueria doesn't offer guacamole. One last thing, that for me was an issue out of principal. They have a 4% surcharge for anyone using a credit card. Normally I am fine with the policy, if the orders are small. But we live in a digital age, if your order is close to $50, that is a sizable order and I don't believe I should be penalized for not carrying large bills. AT LAST, a legit taco spot for austin street that isn't a cart (no hate, but it's harder during covid to get out) - Homemade Taqueria is a new joint, so I know some other reviews may talk about waiting times, but they're just sour about a tough technical day. No spills; and the drinks contained very well. the food was hot, absolutely fulfilling and so so good. Lots of flavor and authenticity in the tortillas (both flour and corn) and the homemade chips were bomb. EXCELLENT água frescas too. Ive been to the location once and it's a small spot, super clean and well kept, and the staff is very understanding and accommodating.
