Decent food, not the cheapest. My main problem with this place is that they automatically charge you gratuity when you sit down to eat. A very sneaky move in my opinion as your bill then shows up with a blank tip section. I. E write your tip amount in this line _______. My wife fell for this and added another significant tip on top of the already charged tip. Luckily I reviewed the unusually high bill and found it before leaving. The consomme for the birria was just fine-certainly not the best birria I've had. You get to choose which salsa for each taco, which I appreciated. However, I was surprised by the consistency of the "guacamole" sauce, which was definitely salsa-textured and not guac at all. I had ordered hours ahead for a time-slot of 6:45-7:15, so was a bit bummed when I got there at 7 and had to wait until 7:15 (they don't seem the fastest establishment). I never sat and ate there I always order take out. The customer service is great and sometimes when you order online they offer you 10% off. I normally order the Taco Supreme , Birria, Fish, Shrimp which comes with cheese, guacamole, pico de gallo and sour cream. For an additional price. Otherwise the tacos always come with your choice of meat, onions, cilantro, lime, radish and a choice of green, red, or guacamole sauce. I ordered a steak taco, a chorizo tostada, cheese empanada and tres leches cake. Taco was sturdy and chrunchy and stuffed with ingredients as was the tostada (soft shell). I was pleased with every single bite of each item. And the packaging of the food to go was effecient, thoughtful and neat. Beware... Even their mild salsa is VERY spicy! Price: I paid about $20 (i ordered extra guac) for all four items and a can beverage. They have specials for combos which i ordered. And it was enough food to share. Service: i ordered an order to go at the register the cashier was nice, informative and great at giving recomendations for a first timer. He also realized he over charged me by a couple dollars. Really amazing people here, but sadly the food wasn't what I expected. Food: Beef empanadas: The empanada pastry was really well made but the beef was really dry, and honestly felt heavily under seasoned. Chicken empanadas: Similar to the beef, the pastry was done really well but the chicken was really dry and would avoid ordering this. Cheese empanadas: These were actually my favorite of the bunch and glad I got these for my vegetarian friends. The cheese really boosted the flavor of their well made pastry. Came on a wrong day. Argentina vs Netherlands in World Cup. Ordered 3 tortas, and a burrito. I placed this order online and I was literally right across the street leaving my son's piano class. Within that short walk to Homemade, my order was already ready. I couldn't believe it because I've ordered before and waited quite a long time for smaller orders in the past. Upon entering the restaurant, I noticed all the workers were sitting in the dining area watching the World Cup. When I got home, all of my sandwiches were no longer hot. I couldn't help but feel that they pre-made their entire menu so that they can catch the World Cup without any customer distractions. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, I'm saying I totally understand! It's the World Cup! It was no biggie, I reheated it them with my panini press and it actually ended up tasting better this way with a crispy toasty bread. Verdict - their tortas are pretty underrated. Good portion and the price hasn't increased dramatically during inflation times. For the burrito, I wished it came with a little more tortilla chips. We have been to the Kew Gardens one and were anxiously waiting for the Forest Hills location which is closer to walk to. My favorite here so far are the Tortas. The sandwich portion is big and worth it for 8.95. We just tried the Mulita which was very good but not the Birria I was hoping for. Our other go to is the tostada al pastor. I could drink the consome as a big bowl of soup! I was also impressed with the al pastor, shrimp, and fish tacos. I found the chicken, steak, and chorizo tacos to be good but not amazing. If you're getting the birria tacos, I'd recommend only ordering those for your meal, and if not, make sure you eat those 3 first because they don't stay hot/crispy for long and they are definitely better FRESH. Also, beware that you might end up waiting longer for your order than they say. They told me 10 minutes for pickup but it ended up being 20-25... but they were super busy so I understand. I got a carnitas taco which was very tasty though there was an extra charge for it, not sure if it's because it's a new addition to the menu. The steak tostada was pretty good. Love this place, I use to live in the area and there's nothing else like it. Just some food trucks that is as closest as traditional as you will get. Sure there's a couple Tex mex spots but it's not the same. Good place for take out Mexican food. They have tacos, burritos, quesadillas, horchata, agua de Jamaica. Some of the things are very traditional it's very good. They have combos too which are good. They have great portions. I miss living so close to this place and the whole neighborhood. I was excited to have this place open up for more variety. Finally went and got take out. Decided to try their tacos, so ordered one of each. Maybe I got them on bad night, but the food wasn't what I expected. The beef taco, was basically ground beef without any seasoning. The fish taco, was unrecognizable. Basically the food was tasteless. When I asked if they guacamole, they said no, but has a sauce instead. Don't quite understand how a taqueria doesn't offer guacamole. One last thing, that for me was an issue out of principal. They have a 4% surcharge for anyone using a credit card. Normally I am fine with the policy, if the orders are small. But we live in a digital age, if your order is close to $50, that is a sizable order and I don't believe I should be penalized for not carrying large bills.
