You know, after many, many years of just driving by this non descript and kind of run down building we were eager to try a local brewery which was on our Oregon's North Coast craft beer trail card. If it was not on our card we would not have stopped. What a fun local treasure! Met Hondo, the owner and brew master who sat down as we discussed the beers. All named after dog breeds except for Dexter's double chocolate porter, that's named after the owner's dog. Met Dexter who was hanging out on the couch. Grabbed a $8 flight of four pours and watched the locals who came in to watch the Blazers game. Good, local vibes, a genuine hidden treasure here in Astoria! Tried 4 dark beers, Dexter's double chocolate porter, Pitbull oak stout, Hellhound mocha stout and Doberman dunkel. The dunkel was lighter and sweeter than most. Good beer, not great. Crochety old bar tender with the personality of a rock. Met someone who works here at Astoria Brewing back in January, was looking forward to liking this place but with all the other great options in the town probably won't be back. Word to the wise employer looking to hire in a tourist town: make sure your potential employees have a bit of a personality, know how to make tourists feel like they are welcome and not wait to check on customers until their beers are empty then act surprised that they are not having a second round. Oh and a "thank you" when handing the tab to be signed is a nice touch too. read more

The kind of place that requires you to respect their approach towards beer and brewing - and that's okay, because they know what's what. It's a hodgepodge of beer and wine and music gear and dog hair and personal taste that's essential for beer culture. There are some old signs that advertise beer and wine tasting -HA! WINE? - and a small parking lot, but it's worth a stop in if you live out in the corner and seek different beers. Currently they're featuring a bunch of Boulevard, a brewery from Kansas City, but you can pick up micro and craft beer from a rotating selection of sources. If that's not your thing, post up at the bar for a pint of dog-themed nano brew and strike up a chat with RJ or...someone else...all eager to shoot the breeze. You can see much of the brew operation from the bar... Definitely a reflection of the owners, this is a place you can hang out and talk beer and pet dogs all day. read more

Somehow this little brewery slipped out of my searches and previous visits to Astoria up until recently. I am really glad that I found it! Hondo's also contains a beer supply section for those that brew their own, a bottled wine and beer selection which is very impressive and of course their own taproom with their own beer! They have a very diversified selection of their own beers on tap which makes decision making a bit tough if you are just going to stick to one beer. Many of their beers are oriented towards a sour flair which is actually quite good! I had their Hellhound which was an excellent, dark beer which was very warming on the somewhat brisk day when we were visiting in Astoria. Hondo's is definitely worth a return visit next time we are in Astoria! read more

One of the best kept secrets in Oregon for craft beer. This place has an outstanding selection of beers everything from IPA's to sours, ales, porters and stouts. Worked through the upgraded Bourbon Bernard - a 32oz came home... Followed by the Imperial IPA - absolutely support - a fabulous sublime smooth bitter on the end - and oh the depth!!! Since coming here from Ireland, there are a few things that I miss, and one of them is Harp Irish Lager, well yeah and sheep, but that is another therapy moment. I am not a beer expert at all, so much of the hoopla and brew pubs here in the Pacific Northwest are a total loss on me. All I know is that I like what I like, and I like Harp Irish Lager and things that taste like Harp Irish Lager. Guinness is good for an occasional car bomb, but for refreshment, it isn't what I crave as a rule. Bored out of my mind and driving around Astoria led me to Hondo's Brew & Cork. It was early in the day, so a time when I don't think they get overrun by customers. I had the great honour of meeting "RJ", the owner / operator of Hondo's. He is a really nice lad who knows his stuff. He has an amazing mind for brewing and a true love for the craft. RJ gave me a tour of his facility and shared with me his plans for growth. He also teaches a class on brewing at the local college. Hondo's has a nice selection of home brewing supplies and ingredients, many microbrews, speciality beers and ales, wines, brews on tap (local and made onsite), and I am sure anything that you could ever need. He stocks what people like and request and his selection is eclectic and impressive for the size of the shop at this stage. His plans are to have a separate retail section for his supplies, one for his wines and brews, and then a small pub area with tables and a small bar for happy hours and social times. The transformation is already in progress. Once this is accomplished, Hondos will be a nice place for a pint that is quiet and free of hipster attitude and BS. I personally can't wait. The fact that Harp is one of RJ's favourites and that he stocks it regularly doesn't hurt either. So be sure to check out the place now for your brewing and consumption needs, and have him pull you a pint. Soon, this place will be a popular neighbourhood pub that is simple....good drinks, good times, and good company. Who could ask for more really? Really interesting place! Didn't even realize it was there till I walked by on foot. The place has good selection of beers on tap, and amazing prices on take-home bottles(seriously, $2??? d#mn). I am not so knowledgeable on it, but they have a pretty nice selection of brewing equipment for sale too. Great service too, Brad sat and talked with me for a good 45 minutes about the company. Highly recommend that people give this place a try! Doesn't seem like the rest of the bars in town that cater to specific groups and cliques of people. read more

Great brew supply shop and also a great place to grab a beer. The shop owner was very nice and chatted with us for quite a while. The store is expanding so I think it will probably get even better. You do have to buy a glass if you want a beer there, but the glasses are very cheap and cool souviners. I guess it would have been nice to know that in advance so if your reading this and going for your first time bring your own glass to save 1.50. Hondo's seems like a really cool local business to support. read more

Hondo is a legend. Words cannot express the level excellence when it comes to his craftsmanship. Next level beer. Even the beers I have no interest in are phenomenal. This guy has the touch. We have passed by this place so many times through the years, never figuring it warranted a stop. We took too many years to finish the North Coast Brew Pub Tour but finally knocked it out this weekend. We finished with Hondo's and wish we had started there! This place has so much local color that it looks remarkably like Astoria! Hondo, the brewmaster, is a home brewer turned master! Boasting more varieties and recipes than he has room for and with no favorites because it'd be like having a favorite child...I mean, I'm sure we all do but we'd never admit it! :) Meanwhile, this place a quarter of a mile closer to downtown, would be incredibly crowded and busy with locals and tourists alike. But without the 'destination worthiness' of Rogue on pier 39 or the centrality of Fort George, Astoria Brewing, and Buoy, it sits here as an outpost in a city steeped in beer culture. However, it remarkably belongs among the best that Astoria has to offer. Hondo mentions that he has plans to move closer into the downtown area which I hope happens soon because Astoria continues to grow and flourish despite so many store fronts that remain shut down. Another brew pub in the downtown blocks will add more color and liveliness and anchor the further development of other businesses...and it makes a pub crawl that much easier :) Every beer we tried was fantastic, the company was even more enjoyable, and the experience overall was comfortable. We look forward to returning another time to enjoy a couple more of Hondo's brews! Great Stuff! read more

Two dogs? Hondo is great. One dog that I am used to and enjoy seeing. But on my latest visit today, I was greeted with a growling and barking new dog as well. I wasn't able to enjoy my experience or hunt for beer in peace. It was like the owner is saying, "To hell with customers. Who gives a damn about them?" I love dogs, but I don't like one sniffing my biscuits when I am look for beer, or growling at me like it is going to bite me in the calf. Bad choice. read more

I don't know why this place isn't as busy as the bigger breweries in town, but Hondo's offers some damn good beers on tap in a low-key, relaxing atmosphere. The brewery's logo and mascot is the sweetest dog ever (his name is Dexter, don't mistake that for Hondo, the brewer and owner.) Although if you ask Hondo himself, he'll tell you that Dexter actually runs the place. (Also note the Beer names on tap are all dog-themed. This made me love the place even more.) We tried the pick-your-own flight, and everything was GOOD. There are very few breweries that I've been to (Portlander here) that I can boast this claim. The "Pugtail Pale" Dry-Hopped Double Pale Ale and the "Dog Days of Summer" Blood Orange IPA were my favorites. Also noteworthy is the place is (obviously) dog-friendly and there's a bottle shop and home brewer shop located in the building. Hondo's is your one-stop shop for all beer lovers, and I can't wait to come back for our next trip to Astoria! read more

Hondo's is growing. They have added more microbrews from around the northwest and added more choices to their brews on tap. They have just hired a brewmaster who makes small batches on site. They also have a selection of wines and sake available. They have a better selection of home brewing supplies and they teach two different levels of classes through Clatsop Community College on home brewing. The owner says that while he began as a package store his own interest in homebrewing as a hobby inspired him to start the classes and offer supplies instore. If you are a home brewer, or wannabe this is the place to go in Astoria. read more

Nice little tasting room in the heart of Astoria. We had lunch with the owner and one of his assistants who were both pleasant. Frankly, I wasn't in love with their house brews, but they had some great selections in both bottles and guest taps. Their sandwiches were also pretty good.
