You know, after many, many years of just driving by this non descript and kind of run down building we were eager to try a local brewery which was on our Oregon's North Coast craft beer trail card. If it was not on our card we would not have stopped. What a fun local treasure! Met Hondo, the owner and brew master who sat down as we discussed the beers. All named after dog breeds except for Dexter's double chocolate porter, that's named after the owner's dog. Met Dexter who was hanging out on the couch. Grabbed a $8 flight of four pours and watched the locals who came in to watch the Blazers game. Good, local vibes, a genuine hidden treasure here in Astoria! Tried 4 dark beers, Dexter's double chocolate porter, Pitbull oak stout, Hellhound mocha stout and Doberman dunkel. The dunkel was lighter and sweeter than most. The winner was Dexter' s double chocolate porter! Rich, smooth, and chocolatey!

We stopped in while doing the Oregon's brewery trail. James was behind the bar and gave us an education on how beer types are made, he actually changed how I felt about sour beers (hated them before I met James). James was extremely knowledgeable on beers! We also met Dexter, the pup on the logo. Great service

    Cool and casual bar

The owner was working alone despite having some medical issues. He was wonderful to talk to and the pineapple hazy was amazing!

After taking two friends to Hondos I was told by an employee "Don't come back kike". Fluorescent lights, dreary.

The set up here is quite interesting and comes very close to a one stop shop. It has part convenience store and beer bar all wrapped into one and the tap list of beer is pretty extensive. Lots of local or PNW area beers on tap but they also have some exclusive beers of their own that I almost missed. I was ready to go but Steve pointed this out to me so we got a beer here after all. I liked the tucked away seating and at the time we were there there wasn't anyone else having a beer so the peace and quiet was appreciated. The beer that we had was a lager and it was okay. It was apparently brewed out of Bend, Oregon but I am not sure if another brewery does this for them or not. The flavor highlights with this lager is a breadiness and somewhat of a clean aftertaste. It was fair but it kind of gave me the impression of a big corporate beer as I didn't see much personality to it in the flavor profile. But other than that I did enjoy my first visit to a Growler Guys and as the name implies you can bring in a Growler Bottle and select from the wide list of beers to enjoy.

Cool little pub /restaurant near Pier One in Astoria, OR. Upon return from a bike packing trip,…read morehit Portway Tavern for lunch before heading out of town. Ambience - small tavern with seaside vibe with both indoor bar and table seating as well as some limited outdoor table seating. As a party of one, I elected to sit indoors at the end of the bar. As it's located on HWY30 at Portway, I imagine sitting outside could be a little noisy at times. Service - prompt and very friendly. Seemed like the sole bartender was the sole waitress as well...but she was very attentive nonetheless equally dividing her attention to a full house of customers! There appeared to be 1-2 short order cooks in the back...so small crew to handle the lunch crowd. Food - clam chowder, fish and chips, and a cider...a reoccurring meal of mine when traveling through the PNW and kinda how I like to judge one place from another. Thick NE-style clam chowder loaded with clams! Solid contender and some of the better chowder I've had as of late. The F&Cs were 3, 2-3oz sized halibut pieces fried golden brown with a huge side of string fries...also very crispy! With some lemon and malt vinegar on the fish and a refreshing cider on tap, it all went down quite well...yum! Price was reasonable, although maybe a little pricy given this was the industrial side of the riverwalk. Nonetheless, the food/drink, service, and ambience were all good! Felt his was more of a local hangout for those working at the marina as compared to, say... Astoria Brewing... a definite touristy alternative that's larger, busier, and smack dab on the riverwalk. Both are solid places offering different vibes. Definitely will be back here as well! Cheers!

Portway Tavern has the best clam chowder in Astoria, as far as I'm concerned! I recently did a…read morechowder crawl through Astoria, trying chowder at 10 different restaurants, and Portway came out on top for every person in our group. It's a classic clam chowder, but incredibly flavorful, rich, and creamy. It has big chunks of clam, bacon, and some potato, but unlike many chowders, the clam-to-filler ratio is definitely heavy on the clam. It is simply outstanding. The staff are every bit as impressive as the food. I drove an hour back tonight specifically for their chowder and planned to try the fish and chips as well, only to discover that the power was out and wasn't expected to return until much later. I was obviously disappointed and mentioned how far I had driven. The staff were so kind that they gave me a bowl of chowder to take home and heat up later--on the house! That level of kindness and customer service is rare. We need more restaurants like Portway Tavern. Amazing chowder, wonderful people, and a place I will happily keep coming back to! They have a customer for life!
