I'm far from a car expert, so when I take my car in to get looked at, I want to feel like I'm talking to experts who aren't looking to fleece me. Honest-1 exceeded expectations. First off, I made an appointment - my car was taken in on time and they finished working on it on time. I tried to buy full-synthetic but they pointed out I only needed a synthetic-blend (which was cheaper). I can't remember being downsold very often when my car is being worked on. Along with an oil change I had a 21 point inspection done. My car checked out with one issue. Rather than paint it as an emergency, the guy I spoke with said there's no rush to fix it, but I should consider it down the road. They provided me with a quote should I decide to bring it back to have them fix the issue. Oh yea, and the cost was comparable to the common chain locations that are known for lacking in quality. To sum it up, I don't see why I'd go anywhere else for basic maintenance. True professionals, competitive pricing, honest advice. read more

Had an engine code on our truck and wanted to see if they could fix the issue. They first had to do a diagnostic test which was $200. Did not get detailed results, just told us what part needed to be fixed. So we had them replace it. Now there are still codes. Last time we used a different auto shop for a different vehicle, the diagnostic test told us EVERYTHING wrong with the car and they provided the price for each thing. We got nothing from Honest-1. Feels like they don't really care about fixing the whole vehicle. Also, not very friendly. read more

Brought my car in for a complete diagnostic on my car to make sure all components were in good shape and I had a clunking noise and resistance backing up. This car had been running and driving rough leading up to this (point of the diagnostics), had a squealing belt I hear every time I use the A/C but they apparantly couldnt find it. They call and update that it needs new CV shafts and mid shafts, $1,700. Assuming this was the reason for the problems reversing I had them go ahead and replace it. When I picked up my car a couple days later I was informed the problem was the fender hitting the tire so they had to cut some away.. thats a cheap fix. After leaving unsatisfied and with a squealing belt I could tell something was wrong. I took the car somewhere else and learned they left one of my tires dangerously loose and somehow in their "$270 full diagnostic" they missed that my transmission was slipping gears and in desperate need of repair (and they found and fixed the A/C squeal easily), I would pressume this transmission problem was not only more obvious than the axle problem but also more important to have fixed. I do not find these mechanics to be competant or honest, wouldn't recommend them but I have another shop I would ;) read more

I paid $3,688 to Honest-1 Auto Care Stark to fix a power steering problem. Before the repair, my steering was fine. After they worked on it, the wheel was dangerously loose. A technician even admitted there were tool marks on the universal joint, suggesting the damage happened during their repair. When I asked for help, management said they couldn't find the part to fix it and told me I could try to find it myself if I really wanted it repaired -- clearly hoping I would just give up. Weeks went by with no updates, and when I called, staff became aggressive and hung up. My vehicle remains unsafe, and the shop refuses to take responsibility. Their work was careless, their communication nonexistent, and their customer service appalling. **Avoid this shop at all costs -- they will leave you with a worse, dangerous vehicle and no solution.** read more

I had my car towed here because the hybrid battery gave out. Considering I didn't have an appointment, they got to it fairly quickly and I had my car back in a few days. They also replaced the regular battery which was on its way out. The price for their services wasn't great but it wasn't horrible either. About 20 miles later the new hybrid battery broke down so I took it back and they replaced it free of charge. I would have preferred more communication from this business about what was happening to my car. I didn't know the regular battery broke too and that they replaced it until after they had done so but, you know, it was broken so I would have had to replace it anyway. None of these things are really that interesting, but what I found in my passenger seat after I picked up my car for the second time absolutely was. As pictured, someone had been enjoying what I assume to be fries and fried chicken in my car. I would love for someone from this business to respond and correct me if I'm wrong and these were crumbs from some other kind of fast food, as I am curious. Also, the little fry bits looked really good and I kind of want to get some for myself. I'm a little confused about the amount of napkins left behind. There was a sizable stack of them in the footwell in addition to the napkins in the picture. The amount of napkins they were given wasn't Honest-1's fault, I just thought it was odd that the fast food place gave someone so many napkins for what I assume was just one person. I also thought it was odd that the mechanic left the napkins in my car. Anyway, I'm not mad about the crumbs; they were easy enough to vacuum up and I found it amusing that a mechanic decided to eat fried chicken in my car. I admire the chutzpah it takes to do something like that and not clean up the crumbs at all. It's like a calling card left by a serial killer, or perhaps an artist signing their work. It's a bold move for which I can only respect the culprit, so I'm not taking off any stars for the crumbs. At the risk of getting too personal, I've been pretty down in the dumps lately and this gave me the laugh I really needed. It's the little things, like a beautiful sunset, a call from a friend, or a stranger who you paid to fix your car messily eating fried foods over your passenger seat. I acknowledge that potentially they could have left my car unlocked and some sort of strange fast food pervert may have snuck into my car and had a quick meal over my passenger seat because that's their thing. I choose to give this business the benefit of the doubt and assume that this was not the case, as I would remove a star if they left my car in their parking lot unlocked and someone snuck in to eat chicken in there. I'm waiting patiently for the day when a friend asks me for a mechanic recommendation, and I can say "well the folks over at Honest-1 on Stark fixed my car for a price that wasn't great but not horrible either. They told me to just get an oil change at my local location. Geewiz, don't you think I would've since it's closer to me, maybe they are booked out maybe I'm asking for this location for reason... always would get smart Alec responses since 2018 hence why I stopped going to this location. *** sorry, after 1K my car is NOT in the same condition as before. After flushing the transmission fluid, these jokers shorted me THREE QUARTS of fluid ruining my transmission. Also, another local shop was able to fix the a/c the first time around for under $200--it turns out it wasn't even the 3rd thing Honest1 diagnosed it with. Not that it matters with a blown transmission. If the owner (NOT the manager) doesn't reach out to me ASAP about covering repair costs for the transmission, we will be escalating the matter. read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. This is the absolute worst place to take your car. They are just scammers. I came in asking for a camshaft sensor change, and I had the diagnostic report ready from that same day. They stated they HAVE to get to the "root of the problem" before they fix anything. It took them days to even look at my car even though I had an appointment confirmation. They then called me and quoted me over $900 and said I have an issue with my camshaft sensor. I told them it was my camshaft sensor 3 times, and even provided the evidence. The camshaft sensor costs $47.99 at O'Reilys. I told them not to do anything! They still charged me over $200 for simply telling me it was my camshaft sensor (after I told them 3 times and provided the printed diagnostic test). When I came to pick up my car, it wasn't in their lot and instead parked on the street in a no parking zone. The car smelled like cigarettes, the radio was set to a station I don't listen to, and they left some random metal rod in my car. read more

They called me to rebook my appt because the one the I made online wasn't available so we booked for several days later. When I arrived there was no record of my appt and none of my info that I had already entered about the appt in their system. After diagnosis I was told that I had a broken air compressor, but was informed that they would not replace the broken part without also replacing several other items that were still functioning but would add another $1k labor to the project. I got their Groupon for the oil changes, they are by far the cheapest but after a year I am having a hard time trusting them. When I first went in my Airbag light came on when I picked it up, I showed them and they said "we don't touch that", they tried to diagnose it, not cuz it happened on their watch, but because I had a freebie on my groupon. They couldn't figure it out and I paid $50 to have it diagnosed elsewhere- basically it isn't worth investigating further so still broken- it is an old vehicle so Maybe it was a coincidence? I reluctantly came back and on my 4th & last Oil Change there was oil on the door, seat, and shift lever. Also I noticed a metal ring had fallen off my ignition housing and been placed on the steering column adjust lever (see pictures). I showed them and first response is- "we don't touch that". They asked around and the technician didn't remember. The ignition ring wasn't a big deal but that they wouldn't admit to it makes me think they either intentionally or delinquently mess with the cars- or maybe just certain customers. The savings isn't worth wondering what else they "don't touch" :( If you do go there, I suggest you wait- It seems like the sketchy stuff happened when I let them know I was going to go on errands and would be back a little later. read more

Honest-1 should NOT be allowed to put "Honest" in their name. They stuck me with an extra $80 charge they did not tell me about before hand and basically held my car hostage. I have a Honda CRV---I know, it's a very rare and uncommon car. I needed new brakes, and they couldn't get the lug nuts off without using a special key universal to Honda. So, when I picked up my car they told me they had to charge extra to get them off. Funny, because when I had my tires changed here a year ago, none of this was an issue and they were easily able to get my tires off just fine without this sneaky, extra charge. Also, the interchangeable pear-shaped men who work the front desk are misogynists. Whenever I pick up my car with my boyfriend they ignore me and only look him in the eye and only talk to him, even if I ask the question. I know more about cars than he does, my parents owned an auto part store while I was growing up. I just have no patience for that. read more

If I'm at a shop it's because I probably have to spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars fixing something that is required for me to have in order to go to a job that I may or may not despise. Depending on the day. ;) With that said, Honest 1 on Stark is the mechanic that I choose to hate. Well, hate and love. Hate that I'm here, but love and thankful that I'm at the best mechanic that I know of in the Portland area. The doode at the counter is always nice and when I call in they always try to get me in as soon as possible. As far pricing goes, I really have no clue. But I think they are pretty reasonable. It's also one of those, you get what you pay for type of thing. So go here and spend your hard earned money to get your car fixed. read more

I've been a customer for nearly a decade in Gresham. Today I was attempting to get to their office to discuss appointments for two vehicles. Traffic getting there was a mess, and I decided to go in the back way as it was late. Honest 1 mechanic was parked in his truck blocking their business. After honking and getting no response, I got out to see what the issue was. He said it was not for public access, even though I've accessed their business this way lots of times. He proceeded to flip me off and ignore my request to pass. After driving around the block, I was able to get to the office where the manager was very unsympathetic, he said he would tell his brother, Steve, the owner of the business. Well, Steve, you've lost a long time customer who has recommended your business often. That stops now. read more

I took my car to honest one auto, Stark and 20th to get a new starter installed. Total cost was over $1000. The part for the starter alone was $300 and I t was a used refurbished one. I went to Napa to price a brand new one and that was $175. They installed A new battery. The battery that was in my car is only one year old. When I questioned the bill ,I asked can you knock something off of this, the guy behind the counter took $50 off. I don't recommend this place to anybody. I would stay clear of them in my opinion, they are dishonest. read more

I bought a Groupon and found out when I got to the 82nd Ave location that they don't accept the Groupon coupon. Beware.

if I could them zero stars, I would. I brought in my Lincoln to this garage in September 2022 for a brake check. Upon inspection by the mechanic new brakes were recommended. The total cost for the new brakes was $1700. I thought that was high, but everything on this car is more expensive. After I drove off, I went about a week without any problems. Soon after the brakes were squeaking and a clanking noise started to happen. I took the car back to Stark, but they were now to shut down due to a fire in their shop. I then went to another garage and they confirmed the presence of a clanking noise, but could not find the source. The manager of the shop said "those guys over at Honest are crooks, they probably screwed something up". I then took it to another garage and they had it for three days and found the source of the noise, it was the breaks. I drove on it for a week and the noise came back so I took it to the Milwaukie Honest 1 location. They had it overnight and when I picked it up I was told "everything is fine, breaks squeak in the winter and the clanking noise is probably something rolling around in the back". I left completely unsatisfied and insulted. I waited a few months and took it back to the garage that said the breaks were the source. After 5 days, they shop diagnosed the problem as the breaks that were installed by Honest 1. The breaks were not only installed incorrectly, the wrong parts were used. $1000 later the breaks do not squeak anymore and the clanking noise is gone. I will NEVER take any vehicle of mine to Honest 1. I will follow up this review with a formal complaint to the State of Oregon. read more

Jason at the front desk is not only helpful & knowledgeable, he's also able to explain things in a way that is understandable. Jason is upfront, honest, & will give you a quote you won't get from most other mechanic shops. Trust me I've shopped around. I've used this shop for my last 2 cars & they've never done me wrong! That's saying a lot when you're looking for a mechanic. i can barely open the hood on my car but the people that work there are always friendly & willing to lend a hand. I have to say I really appreciate how transparent, the quick turn arounds on jobs, & friendly service. I know they sound too good to be true but I promise you won't be disappointed in this shop. I live in the vicinity of Honest-1 in SE portland so I thought I would give my local mechanic a chance instead of taking my jeep to the dealer. I called to make an appointment and they told me to bring it in the next day before 9. When I showed up they told me that whoever took my phone call never put me on their schedule and they were too busy to take my car in so I would have to come back on Monday. I figured things happen so I was very understanding and brought my car back on Monday. I told the mechanic that there seems to be a coolant leak that spills into hot parts of the engine making it look like it's overheating and that it might need a coolant flush since I added some coolant that wasn't the recommended coolant for my jeep... He called me back a few hours later saying my jeep was ready to pick up and when I showed up he just had a bill for $120 and told me I need to take it somewhere else to get the head gaskets replaced because they don't do that kind of work there. In an effort to get more answers I asked if he had flushed the coolant as I asked and he said there was no need because he performed a carbon test and it came back positive. So I asked how long it took and what else he checked and it was clear that all he did was a 5 minute test and then considered the problem to be too much for him to handle. Either way, he choose to charge me for a full hours worth of work. I took my jeep to the dealership like I should have in the first place and they found a very clear coolant leak in the radiator. They replace the radiator and tested my jeep and the head gaskets seem to be fine... Thank God I didn't take Honest-1's advice and go get my head gaskets replaced since they would have cost me thousands of dollars. At this point I can not recommend their service and will not be going back. It's hard not to call them Dis-Honest-1 Auto Care when they charge people for 5 mins worth of work without properly assessing your vehicle. read more

Pete's an alright guy, and wants to do good by you, the customer. Scott's a bit condescending, and wants to make a sale. I'll also note Scott will treat male and female customers differently. I can't say whether he treats gay customers differently than straight customers, or if he treats black-skinned people different than white-skinned people, but i wouldn't be surprised. I've taken my car to this place a handful of times, and for a while i believed the place was pretty decent. Initially, the only problem i had with them was that they'd provide quotes for EVERYTHING wrong with your car, even if you tell them in advance that there's one specific problem you want fixed. So you have to play a little game of "which of these problems actually needs immediate attention," to reduce your $1500 estimate to $500. Then one time, Pete claims his master tech Scott was the person who did the shoddy job on my car that caused some short-term, but serious problems. I had mentioned when i was having the work done, that i would soon be leaving for a road trip, and i wanted to make sure the car wouldn't break down on me. It didn't exactly break down, only because i kept the car running all day, even while stopped to eat, shower, and buy gifts on my road trip. But it came to the point where the car took 3-5 seconds to start after cranking the key, and sounded like it might not start next time if i turned the engine off. An absolutely excellent mechanic in NE California assessed the problem, and showed me that a certain essential liquid was depleted, due to a leak caused by the prior job done by Scott at Honest 1. The CA mechanic replenished liquids, made a single tweak, and my car started back up without any excessive crank time. Then the next day he finished the job, and showed me exactly what the problem was that caused the leak. When i brought this problem back to Honest 1, Pete took care of me, but required proof. With the proof i provided, Pete was able to reimburse me the charges i paid in CA. Pete's customer service efforts earned my review an additional star! read more

I originally posted a somewhat negative review after getting a bit of sticker shock on a wiper motor replacement. The part cost was higher than a quick search seemed to indicate and the work wound up being more expensive than I had foreseen. In all fairness I hadn't spoken up at the time of service, being stressed over some other issues and let it stew for a bit before writing the review. Scott reached out to dispel any resentment and explained their side, and that they always use OEM parts rather than after-market, to back up the 30,000 mile guarantee they provide. I work on my own cars up to a point, and have no issue with quality after-market parts, so was surprised to see just how much dealer parts can cost compared to after-market. I mentioned even in my original review that the work done was solid and fast, and that there was never any attempt to sell me on work that wasn't needed, and that's definitely the truth with these guys. I was also impressed that he reached out and explained their side. If you have something peripheral to fix and don't necessarily want to spend the money to get dealership parts for something non-integral, then well... you might want to shop around. But my revised opinion is that if you want high quality work done with the most premium parts available, this a fine shop to go to. They seem to have a philosophy of not cutting any corners and then back up the work done with a significant guarantee. read more

After my last experience where I was told I had "a massive oil leak" and needed to replace my timing belt over 15k miles early- BUT a second mechanic found NO such issues. I went in to have them replace a power steering hose. They told me they would have to charge me $115 to diagnose the problem. I am not going to pay $115 for them to get in the car, turn the wheel, and witness the leak. I have already done that, I know where the problem is, and I would like it fixed. I don't see why I can't hire them for a simple service. That is like going in with a flat tire, and having them charge me $115 to tell me the tire is flat before they will even replace it. I'm not trying to employ their services to have them tell me what the problem is, I just want them to make a simple maintenance fix on my vehicle, but they absolutely refuse and unless they do their $115 'check'. If you know what is wrong with your vehicle, and just need some work done, take it anywhere else. read more

First impressions are crucial, but can also be undone, so this review is a work in progress, subject to revision, as I get to know this shop better. The fact that I am opting to stick with them after my first visit, however, should be seen in the great light that I intend. Scott and his team at Honest-1 on Stark st. were nothing short of stellar. I just recently moved to Portland, and was seeking an independent auto care facility (given that dealerships tend to overcharge and underdeliver) that I could rely upon for the long term care and maintenance of my car. Honest-1 had good reviews, so I decided to try them out for my oil change. The place is clean, appointments are promptly handled, and the additional charges incurred seem to have been based on perfectly reasonable recommendations: Scott took the time to show me my old dirty air filter, as he recommended I pay for a new one to be installed, and the small overage required by my 6.5 liter oil capacity (as opposed to their quoted coverage of "up to 5 liters") wasn't worth getting upset about. In fact, they were kind enough to give me (and install) a wiper blade that needed replacing, free of charge, so I reckon I came out ahead. All in all, a very pleasant and efficient experience, that compelled me to commit to Honest-1 for the foreseeable future. Might this have been an anomalous good experience? Sure, and I'll update my review accordingly, if that's the case. However, if my next two or three visits prove equally as positive, then I feel Honest-1 will have well deserved my rarely granted five-star rating, for whatever that may be worth! read more

Took my 97 Rav4 in because it wouldn't idle when I started it first thing in the morning. When Scott and Pete did a diagnostic, they found the problem and I had the car back later that day. The next morning, I still had the same problem with the car. I called them back and they said to bring in the car as soon as I could. When I took it in, they found the cause and fixed it for me free of charge. That's the kind of service that keeps people coming back. My car is running smoother than it has for a couple years. Just had my oil changed here and I am so so pleased! I'm pretty clueless about cars and other places tend to zero in on that and go hard on the up-sell until I'm CONVINCED I need all the bells and whistles, but at Honest-1 they took care of everything I'd need (even remembering to turn off my check engine light, which other places always forget since it's a little complicated) and charged me the flat rate I expected. I drive a 2008 Prius and have been told by other places that I needed to buy anywhere from synthetic blend to the most expensive synthetic oil, but Honest-1 told me that they used synthetic blend standard and that with my model and year I could even get away with conventional oil, so that was nice to hear. Plus it was fast! And much cheaper than anywhere else I've had my oil changed! And everyone was extremely friendly, without being overly friendly in that creepy way that these experiences can sometimes be for young women. All in all, A++++ Honest-1, I'll definitely be back. read more

I bought a used suv two months ago that didn't have a maintenance record so when it was time to get the oil changed I took it to honest-1 after finding their Groupon deal for an year long maintenance package. I made an appointment the day before and dropped my car off. They have a nice seating area to wait with complimentary coffee and wifi. Took about 45 min and I was talking with Scott who is their store manager about regular vs synthetic and what other service he would recommend I get done. Scott recommended I stick with the regular synthetic blend because of the higher mileage on my vehicle. I had also told him I didn't know what major service was needed since I just recently bought the car. When it was time to pay I asked Scott what maintenance he recommended and he said everything looks great and he doesn't see anything that needs to be done until my next inspection. When has a mechanic told you that you didn't need any additional services? Really makes me want to come back here knowing that when Scott does say something needs replacing that it actually does. I've has several really good experiences with these guys over the last month. I live in the neighborhood and brought the car in to get a burned out taillight fixed. The guys did it in no time, changed 3 other bulbs and didn't charge me a dime. I suppose that's a good way to recruit new customers because the next week I came back for a transmission flush. Unlike most other places they scheduled me in for just a few hours allowing me to have my car for most of the day. I guess I'm so used to having to give up my car for a full day no matter how routine the service that this really pleasantly surprised me. T he other day there was a rock stuck on with tar between my brakes and the rotors and while another shop wanted to replace ALL of my cars brakes and rotors (front and back!) without taking much of a look, these guys diagnosed the problem, removed the rock and fixed it all, again at no charge, again - a pleasant surprise. You can ask for a buy 3 get one free oil change card next time you're there too. The front desk guys Pete and Steve are very friendly and explain car things in regular words, without pushing unnecessary services on you like many of the other shops that I've gone to. Sure, they'll offer you all the services that they can, but I've never felt pressured in any way. On top of that they have consistently quoted me the lowest price for services compared to 2 other shops in the Portland/ Vancouver area where I used to take my car. This place is just better than what I've come to expect from mechanics these days. read more

When I got there I simply walked in they took my keys and went right to work on my car. Told me it would take 30-40 minutes, yet they were done in 20. Appreciate the speedy service! Unfortunately, I felt obligated to leave a 1 Star review for the sake of other people in Portland. This is my first time doing this on yelp. To make a long story short- Honest 1 didn't close the oil cap in my car after an oil change, and as a result, the car completely leaked all the oil in the days following, resulting in an engine that no longer works. In addition to now needing to figure out a new car situation, Scott took no ownership of their mistake. We really like them. My roommate wanted to buy a used car, we made an appointment to have it checked out, and they did a very thorough inspection and told us everything that was wrong with the car as well as how urgent it was to fix it. Since the seller was from Montana, they also pulled up all the paperwork we'd need to get the Oregon title, made an appointment that fit our schedule, and we came back and got the car tuned up. Great shop! I have been going here for about 3 years with a few different autos. There very prompt and trust worthy. They made a slight error once on something minor and when I came back about it, the manager went out of his way to make it right and gave me a coupon for a free oil change.
