It wasn't hard to find parking on Maunakea st for a quick stop. However, I saw parking enforcement's car there so it looks like now you gotta put money in the meters. Disclaimer: I give honest but rarely 1-star reviews. I looked online for places where I might be able to find Thai-style wide rice noodles. I tried Hong Fa to see if they had any. A past review mentioned there are some in the fridge. When I walked in, the owner was restocking or cleaning. She did not greet me or look up. The fridge didn't have the noodles, darn! I read that the lady (owner) was super kind and helpful. I felt comfortable asking her about the noodles. She snapped at me, very rudely, and said "NO! Next door!" This confused me because the businesses next door sold ready-to-eat food--they were not grocery stores, they were restaurants. I'm sure some may argue that this might be a misunderstanding on my end because of potential cultural differences. However, I grew up with a Korean grandmother who comes across aggressive when she's actually quite kind and loving. This was a customer service issue for sure. I stumbled across this Lao/ southeast Asian market and I'm just like WOWW! They have tons of things that is sooooo hard to find on the island! It's owned by a nice Lao lady. I suggest you come here for all your SE Asian goodies! I've been craving for Cambodian style papaya salad since I've moved back home but it was so hard to find the ingredients else where (including the clay mortar & pestol). I love this Asian market. The prices are reasonable and you can find all kinds of Asian sauces and curries. I was looking for Thai yellow curry paste. I tried Safeway, Times, and Walmart and they didn't have it. They only carried the red and green versions. I looked on Yelp and was directed to this store. I passed by this store hundreds of times but never entered. I came to this store and found the Thai yellow curry paste that I was looking for. They also had the red, green, and panang curries. Not only did they have it, it came in two sizes. I also found pad Thai noodles that I can make at home. I also saw black rice that's really nutritious. I will come here from now on to get Asian products. The store isn't that big, kind of like a mom and pop store. They only take cash, but their products are cheap. read more

THANK YOU yelp for helping me find this place! Ever since coming back from my trip to Thailand (where I took a cooking class), I have been wanting to cook Thai food. However, going to all the different grocery stores, I could not find so many of the necessary ingredients. Yelp to the rescue - I looked up Yelp and found this place. I drove here and was lucky and found a spot a block away on the street to park. This place is next to Lam's Restaurant and is kind of tucked away. I entered and while it is pretty small, they had SO many fresh, canned, bottled, etc. ingredients and I found everything I needed! I got tamarind paste, dark soy sauce, and they even have so many types of curry pastes! In addition, I asked the kind lady if they had pad thai noodles, and she led me to a package of them and suggested a certain kind that would be perfect for pad thai - I greatly appreciated her suggestion :) I asked where I could find fresh noodles to make pad see ew and they directed me next door to Lam's Restaurant (where, btw, I got 3 pounds of fresh rice noodles for only $4.50!) While the only downside is that they only take cash, I will definitely be back for my cooking needs :D read more

I've been here for 2+ years and I keep coming back to this market. It might be small but it has EVERYTHING I NEED (besides fresh meat). I've tried other places (in a pinch) and it never fails, I'll have to buy bits and pieces of the ingredients from different stores to make my Vietnamese/ Thai dishes but there's no need to go anywhere else except here. Its located at thr beginning of chinatown which is easily accessable with a parking lot right across the street. Parking is $3 per hour. At this store you can find all the items that you need. They are a lot of various products and cookware. They have both non-perishable and perishable groceries and even a frozen section. The owner is a friendly lady who is always in a good mood. She has always stopped what she is doing, personally shows me the products, asks good questions, and makes sure I leave with everything I need to make my best interpretation of Thai food. I just discovered this gem and I love this place! As an Indonesian, I couldn't be happier finding Indomie goreng, rendang & rawon seasoning, FRESH red chillies, tempe, and BEEF meatballs!! I've been shopping here for about 20 years. About 10 or 15 years ago, the owners changed location from farther makai on Maunakea Street. The owners, Noi and her husband are the nicest people. They stock pretty much everything you would need to make a Thai, Lao, Vietnamese, or Malay meal. They also stock hard to find items like Rendang mix to make Indonesian beef Rendang. This store is small but clean, well-stocked, and has everything I needed to stock up for Thai soup and curry making! The woman who owns the store was very sweet and helped me find anything that wasn't right out in front, and gave recommendations on what brand or style of item to buy for the dishes I plan to make. The owners are this cute old Thai couple. Every time I come in mama always speaks to me in Thai since I come in to buy stuff like palm sugar, pickled radish, and kaffir lime leaves. The husband usually sits in the corner while mama mans the cash register. They have an extensive amount of items for a small store. Anything from sticky rice to curry pastes, all herbs and spices, fresh veggies...anything you need to make your favorite dishes from your local Thai/Vietnamese/Lao restaurant. The good thing about this store is that mama speaks very good English and can tell you what you're missing if your making a particular dish. The only downside is you have to find street parking which is no biggie since I usually moped it. read more

Went here after reading other Yelp reviews. I wanted ingredients for a few thai dishes. This little store has all the essentials that I needed. Owners are very nice and very helpful. I told guy what I wanted to make and at first he showed me premixed items. I told him I wanted to make it from scratch, the way I learned in Thailand. This is a wonderful store for Thai and SE Asian goods, especially some that are hard to find elsewhere. The shop owner is such a nice lady, so friendly and helpful. Today I bought ingredients to make my Thai curry paste from scratch -- galanga, shrimp paste, coriander seeds, etc. etc. They offer many different brands of various products, such as coconut milk, fish sauce, etc. I asked her what brands she preferred and she freely gave her opinion. They also have pre-made curries with clearly labeled manufactured and expiration dates. Also bought a rice steaming basket and sticky (glutinous) rice, so this'll do me for awhile! The shop is clean and tidy. Well organized. The shelves are neatly arranged. If you're just exploring Thai cuisine and culture and don't know where to start, this is the place for you. This is my go-to Asian Market. Luckily, I work in Chinatown so I can stop in as often as I want and buy ingredients for whatever I'm cooking that night. This is the place for lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime, birds eye chilis, palm sugar and whatever other obscure SE Asian ingredient you need. She also carries croks (Thai mortar and pestle) and baskets for steaming sticky rice. But what I love most is that if I tell her what I'm preparing ingredients for, she helps me find exactly what I need and reminds me if I've forgotten something. Plus, she sells holy basil in 50 cent bunches so I don't have to get a huge bunch that will just wilt and go to waste. Khop Chai Deux! read more
