Craving Laos food In Hawaii found this store that had premade food and it was delicious.

It's a small Lao store located in China town, close to maunakea marketplace. It was my 2nd time coming by. The prices they have in this store is cheaper than I've seen in DonQ. They also have a small fridge filled with homemade Laos items like fermented pork sausage, jeow bong, etc. The workers are so friendly here, easily making conversation with us and the regulars here. LOVE this store! I love Thai/Lao food and it's so hard these days to find a restaurant that you can just buy from so instead..I try to make them IF I can find the ingredients. I've been here a few times and each time I come in , the aunty behind the register and the other aunty who hangs out there (not sure if she just hangs out there or works there) but those 2 have ALWAYS been so helpful in finding and suggesting ingredients that I need. If they didn't have it, they always had another place in mind where I might find it. Once I was looking for fresh wide noodles to make Pad Kee Maw ..they didn't have but they suggested the restaurant on the corner had! They assured they sold the noodles plain in plastic bags..and yes, the restaurant sold the noodles! Cheap too! Today's visit I walked in and told them I going to make Tripe Laab.. the aunty behind the register pointed it out and the other aunty told me to follow her ..not only did they show me, but explained what it does and other alternatives that were available just in case the more specific ones weren't available. There was another customer in there at the same time..I'm assuming she was a regular ..she looked at what I put down on the counter ..started talking in Thai to the worker....she then turned and looked at me and already knew what I was going to make .. she ended up telling me to put back when I got and instead told me to follow her and showed me the "homemade better version" of what I first got.. I was so impressed at the help even by a random person who didn't even work there! I'm definately looking forward to making Tripe Laab this long weekend. I enjoyed going to this store. Clean and organized. Prices clearly marked. I came for star anise spice for my boiled peanuts. I found they have small bags for $2.00. But, I wanted larger quantities. Owner's husband pulled out a 16 oz package for $20.00. This store is so so clean!!! Can't reiterate this. Finally found, they also have pho spice packets with cloth bag to make pho at home. Run of the mill Asian market in Chinatown. Called ahead and asked if they had Siamin bowls. Lady said yes, drove 25 minutes there to find out she was calling the big tubs/bowls of ramen type soup "siamin bowls". read more

The people there are so nice, friendly and very helpful. I was looking for banana leaves but they ran out so they even recommended another store where they have. The lady at the store even walked us half way down the street to show us welders to go and get the banana leaves. It's a small shop but they have a lot of stuff there. Small ethnic grocery. Very clean! Located next to Wing Shave Ice & Ice Cream on Pauahi Street. Street parking only, or relatively cheap parking at the Beretania municipal lot. I went in because I really really wanted to make this Thai basil pesto and I wanted to pair it with some pork meatballs that had a pho flavor. The cashier recommended some pho packets and I found the rice noodles and - my fave! - a jar of friend garlic. There seemed to be a zillion brands of noodles but only one brand of pho packets! Also giant buckets of curry paste in flavors not seen in a regular American grocery. About half the store is taken up by giant chest freezers full of fish and meat - all types! You could seriously make pretty much any dish from ingredients from this store. There is a smallish selection of fresh veggies but they all look really fresh. Everything here is priced very reasonably to downright cheap. The cashier was very helpful, telling me how she makes her pho broth using the same packets. Because I didn't start off using meat to boil (meatballs, remember?) I ended up having to add beef bullion cubes but it all turned out. If I ever have to make another dish like this I'll be back. I'll certainly need to come back for the rice stick noodles, which were perfect! read more

It's exactly what it sounds like and that's a good thing. If you're looking to make some southeast asian food (not just Lao) they've got a good selection of stuff, including my favorite shark brand sriracha sauce which I've not seen carried anywhere else in Hawaii. I wanted to buy some lao sausage but they were out. Apparently they're made locally and I saw the person before me get the last set. I'll just have to go back. read more

The lady working the register along with another gentleman in the store were really helpful with all the questions I had. I love this store. It's very small but clean. They have a lot of the ingredients to make any southeast Asian food that I would normal have a difficult time finding, when in Chinatown. This is definitely my favorite place to get sauces. I also like that it's on the edge of what I would consider Chinatown so parking is a bit easier to find. read more

A great spot to find Southeast Asian groceries. I was wanting to make tom kha soup and needed galangal, kaffir lime leaves and lemongrass. Despite being a small shop they had all of these and more of the items on my list right in the front. The cashier was very helpful when she saw that I had grabbed a different kind of leaf and pointed me to the right ones. The prices were very reasonable and they accepted credit card. It was also convenient that they were open til 5:30pm so I could swing by after work. read more

Solid place for Thai groceries. I needed sticky rice and they had that plus jasmine, red, brown jasmine, etc. If you need 50 lbs of sticky rice they have that too. I picked up some galangal, chiles, seasoning, and a little frozen durian for my wife. The shopkeeper was friendly. Parking was very convenient too. I parked in the underground Smith-Beretania municipal lot. The store is less than 100 yards from the elevator on Pauahi. Price for parking: $0.75! read more

Come here when I am in need of authentic southeast Asian ingredients. Being part Khmer, Laotian and Thai along with many others it is hard to come by authentic southeast Asian dishes in terms of homemade flavors. It's small but it's family owned and you just get that vibe. Prices are pretty fair and cheap for the ingredients they do have. read more

I have been going here for two years now and have always enjoyed the convenience of it's location on the corner for easier access especially in Chinatown. The store is small with narrow aisles but everything is well kept and clean. It contains most of the ingredients that I need to make Thai/Lao food. The store has a NEW OWNER now! My most recent trip compelled me to write a review for this store. I went into the store with my toddler in an umbrella stroller and my other son in an Ergo baby carrier on me. My toddler decided to stick his feet out on the side of the stroller as I was pushing him down the narrow aisle. To my worst nightmare, his feet knocked a fish sauce bottle and it cracked a hole and spilled on the floor. A young gentleman came to my rescue and cleaned up the mess. I apologized numerous times and thanked him. I also told him I would pay for the bottle since it was my son's fault. I gathered my items and went to the register and an older lady rang me up. I reminded her that I would pay for the broken bottle. During this time, they were speaking Lao and said it was stinking from the spill. They didn't know that I can understand the Lao language and I felt so bad about the spill. When my transaction was done, I apologized in Lao to the lady and she was surprised that I could speak Lao. After I left, I realized I was overcharged around $5 more which even takes into account the paid broken bottle. I went back to tell the lady but she was busy with another customer. A random customer told me the cashier didn't charge me for the broken glass. I assured her I was charged for it AND some more! The young man who helped me earlier had to recalculate everything including the broken bottle and agreed with me. He told his mom that she overcharged me. They reimbursed my money. The lady apologized afterwards. I'm sure she overcharged me on purpose and then had the audacity to tell other customers (after I left the store) that she didn't charged me for the broken bottle when she actually did! Some people take advantage of people who look young and don't think twice about second guessing a cashier. I was also feeling so ashamed from the incident that I just wanted to pay for the bottle and leave right away. It was after I left that I realized my total didn't add up. I want to believe that she made a mistake or maybe she had a bad day. Who knows. It just sounds "fishy." Overall, this place is still the same. Same items and same store but the prices have definitely increased a tad bit since there is a new ownership. My advice-if you go, be sure to pay extra attention when you are at the register. Either that or you can go to Hong Fa or to one of the Vietnamese stores to buy your specialty ingredients. You would be surprised to know that other stores carry Lao/Thai ingredients in Chinatown as well and are cheaper than this store. read more

Awesome Laotian and Southeast Asian market. It has a lot of hard to find ingredients you wont be able to get at any other super market on the island. If you are thinking of having Thai or Laotian dishes for dinner this would be the perfect grocery store to get all of your cooking needs. read more

Friendliest Lao people ever! My parents stopped by directly after their flight to get some Lao groceries to cook at our condo. The owner walked us down to some Lao restaurant a couple blocks down! And invited them to a party at the Temple! Talk about service. It's the culture. Store was very clean. read more
