Well, it's a week after, and we went back for the roast pork. It had just come out maybe an hour prior to when we got there. We went for the roasted pork ribs - wow, so delicious!! The skin was nice and crispy, nicely rendered, the meat was moist and flavourful. My favourite part was the slightly crispy undersides of the rib portion that had the marinade nicely charred just perfectly. Mmmmm! We also ordered their sautéed gai lan and we were really impressed. We both thought this was some of the best we've ever had, and we dine out at fancy Chinese restaurants often, and traveled extensively in China. Just perfectly crisp tender, the sauce was just the right balance of delicate flavour and salt. Really impressive. We also ordered another half bbq duck, which I'm going to use up in a dish at home. Coming from Los Angeles, I was expecting much better Chinese BBQ in Toronto, but this ended up being slightly below the average Chinese BBQ restaurant back home. The BBQ meats had decent flavor, but everything was noticeably greasy. The biggest disappointment was the wonton noodle soup. The wonton tasted stale, and after the first bite I had to spit it out because it didn't seem fresh. The restaurant itself had the typical old, run-down feel, but unfortunately it also didn't seem very clean, which made the experience less enjoyable. Overall, I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to eat here. I'm hopeful there are better Chinese BBQ options in Toronto. read more

SHAME ON YOU! One of the workers is racist. I had dinner at Hong Fa BBQ in Chinatown with a friend tonight and had a deeply disappointing experience. As we entered the restaurant and began looking at the menu to place our order, one of the staff had already picked up takeout boxes, assuming we were ordering to-go. I quickly said we were dining in, but instead of a polite response, the staff member snapped at me: "You should've said that earlier! You're standing there--I thought you were getting takeout!" I was stunned by the tone, but didn't react right away and sat down with my friend to eat. Later, I witnessed the same staff member speaking to four African customers nearby with an extremely kind, welcoming tone, even warmly explaining the dishes. The difference in treatment was striking--and honestly, it made me feel sick to my stomach. We finished quickly and left. You can be impatient or even rude, but what's unacceptable is having double standards--being cold and dismissive to someone who speaks Mandarin, but friendly and attentive to someone who doesn't look Asian. The wontons were the smallest I've ever seen, broth was bland. The steamed chicken for my daughter- they said I couldn't just get white meat, so after deboning the chicken, she didn't have much to eat. The meats tasted good, but there was way too much rice. The broth was okay and wasn't as clear and clean as I'm used to at other restaurants so I just had a taste. The bbq meats definitely hit my cravings and I enjoyed the rice as it was soaked in the sauce and drippings from the meat which made the rice really flavorful and the rice was well cooked. The cabbage accompanying the bowl also was pleasant. The inside has a few tables and already have place setting (plate, chopsticks, napkin, tea cup) ready to go. My review is solely based on ordering House Special BBQ Duck. At $27 for half a duck, it's a bit on the pricey side, but I've noticed that BBQ duck has gone up in price everywhere, from Chinatown to Markham. The duck came out juicy and tasty. The marinade was not overpowering and the duck was not dry. The flavour was just right. I even had leftovers which I took home to finish later that evening. The service was good. I'm used to impatient waitresses who practically bark at you at Chinese restaurants but the waitress taking care of us was a middle-aged lady with good manners and a friendly demeanour. I made sure to leave a good tip for her service. I would not bring my date to this restaurant, just so we're clear. It's a no-frills Chinese restaurant that had a renovation done probably more than 20 years ago. The toilets downstairs are disgusting and dirty but that's not why I came here, so whatever. It's great for take-out or a quick bite when on the go. BOTTOM LINE: I am definitely coming back for BBQ duck in the future. It was well worth every dollar. Our tea kettle had a broken handle and was held together with some tape which immediately broke once we tried to use it which was kind of funny. It was replaced though so not an issue. I was pretty much eating white rice and some cabbage. Looking at pictures I took from a year and two years back, there was definitely more meat for the same dishes back then.
