Kum Hong is a Richmond Hill establishment and has been around for more than 20 years. It's a family run operation by a brother and two sisters. Their service is really efficient and to the point not a lot of small talk. But what keeps everyone coming back is their excellent barbecue pork, roast pork, soy sauce, chicken, and barbecue duck. They have takeaway for just the meat or a meat and rice combo. It is not a ton of seating. Most people grabbed the food to go. They have some of the best Chinese barbecue in. Located off Hwy 7 in a strip plaza, parking is not an issue. I first walked and it was a modest place with a decent lineup, which affirmed that it must be a good place. 2 ladies working the counter, 1 of them chopping the meat. I was advised that there is usually a line up, so I gave myself some time and sure enough, there was a line in front of me of about 5-6 people. To me, that's a good sign. This place was the real deal, it was simple and to the point. People made their order, paid cash, and left - the wait wasn't bad at all. This was my first time trying Chinese BBQ, so I was playing it safe by trying the BBQ pork, but when I mentioned it was my first time, the lady at the counter said I could mix and match meats so I also got the roast pork. Holy moly...I don't know which one was better? They were both amazing in their own ways....cooked perfectly, not dry, the rice was even amazing. I must change my review and previous 4 star to a 1 star now. I will say their bbq is still good but this review is more for service and attitude. I'll explain my 1 star change and why I won't be coming ever again. I'm not sure if others have experienced this, I would like to know so leave a comment. Since returning regularly, I noticed some bias. Some serious bias towards me. Now, maybe the lady owner doesn't like me so be it. That is ok. But I have been there in 3-4 occasions and upon paying I noticed some people ahead of me paying cash just like me and getting a total of $16 or $15 or $14 even. But When I pay the lady owner calculates my total on a separated calculator and gives me an uneven total like $17.40 or $18.65 Now I don't mind them avoiding tax for paying the government But Why the bias and charging the customers ahead of me - obviously NO TAX and then charging me tax on a separate calculator. BBQ items like Charsui, Suiyuk, and Roasted Duck are the best in town. Crispy skin, great portion rice box, reasonably priced. Simply unbeatable in Richmond Hill. This time, the cashier sold me to try their braised pigtail. She kept telling me it was incredibly tasty and took them hours to cook. "We don't have these pigtails every day!" I have never heard of that before. Is that really edible? I was skeptical but she sounded with great passionate about it. So, after going back and forth in my mind about buying it or not, I finally bought a small box of braised pigtails and tried it! Verdict: it's just too exotic for me. All I can tell you is that it's very oily with not much meat. It's almost like a very fatty version of ham hocks but with way less meat on it. And the pigtail tip was just unbearable. Once and for all having this. I did not even bother to post any picture of that "dish". Still shivering from it. LOL! Not a cool experience. Okay, so if you plan on picking up food from you, be sure to not be on a tight schedule because they do take quite some time to chop up the barbecued meats! I promise you though, the wait is always SO worth it :D I have been eating barbecue pork from this place for as long as I can remember. Solid chinese style bbq. I tried the roast pork, the bbq pork and the duck. I got it with rice and asked for extra ginger sauce. I was a big fan of the ginger sauce and rice. Meats were all solid. Amazing BBQ place! They have a super freshly made selection and everything is cooked to perfection! In my experience, meat is always tender and juicy. They make batches throughout the day, so fresh batches vary. However, even when you get some of the meat at the end of the day, the meat is still not too dry or tough! Their prices are also amazing. Very reasonable meal and meat prices, with generous portions! You'll definitely be getting great value if you come here. All transactions are cash only though! Each piece was carefully cut in front of you at the counter and every piece was excellent quality and nothing you'd have to cut yourself. It's definitely more of a takeout style place that has some of the best BBQ pork (char siu), roasted pork, and roasted duck in town. The roasted pork and char siu have the optimal ratio of fat:meat, so you get that moist, flavourful meat without too much fat. And the roasted pork has super crispy skin, and usually someone's fighting over those pieces at the dinner table. Craving roasted pork, searched and found this place. It was at lunch hour on a Saturday, it was busy. It was takeout only, but still there was a line up out of the store. The service was friendly but was a little slow. Ordered roasted park and duck. The pork skin was crispy, the pork was well seasoned, very tasteful. I used to buy roast pork from this place until last Saturday. First, there is a sign on the glass window saying maximum 5 persons inside. There were 6 customers, and the 2 owners/servers. When it was my turn to go inside, I noticed 2 persons who were friends, waiting to place their order. One of them had his mask under the nose. As he continued chatting with his friend and waiting for his order, his mask slipped past his mouth - basically un-masked. I told the owner behind the counter that he wasn't wearing his mask, she looked up and pretended she did not hear me.. More likely because he was treated like a regular and she did not want to lose his business. This person took his order and walked out the store and continued without properly wearing his mask. When it came to my order, well, I guess inflation has taken a huge impact to this store. For a large 2 meat plus rice plate, it cost $9.99 plus tax. It was all rice and a miserly serving of meat! The meat was also not the best cut, almost like it was leftovers. No doubt you still have your most loyal customers, but you've just lost one and more when this message goes around. The reviews on this place were stellar. And most were on the barbeque pork and the roast pork. I really like roast duck. So I ordered a whole duck and a half pound of barbeque pork. The duck look good, however, I found it to be a tad dry. Nothing outstanding since duck is a high fat meat anyways but it should be quite moist and it wasn't. The duck was I think $24. So a substantial amount considering I've had moister ones from the Chinese grocery stores. The barbeque pork was really, really good! Probably one the best I've tasted in a long time. The thing I liked about it most was the pieces were small so the flavour imbued the pork better. It was $10 a pound I definitely go back for the barbeque pork but I wouldn't go back for the duck. However, Kum Hong remains my top pick for BBQ Pork in Toronto and I've yet to find another restaurant that comes close in over a decade. Something about the cuts they select and the way they roast the pork provides the most tender, juicy, and succulent BBQ pork you will find in the city. It's amazing how they've made even such a simple dish stand out. The restaurant itself is a bit hidden and more a take-out style although there are a few high stool seats if one desired to dine in. My only criticism is that they continue to raise the price and a single BBQ pork and rice box now costs almost $10! However, a pound of BBQ pork alone probably provides up to 4x the amount you get in a rice box and costs the same so I'd recommend that option if you're willing to skip on the rice. read more

It is located on highway 7 in the southern most part of Richmond Hill. It's in the same plaza as McDonald's. There's lots of free parking and its at the valleymede viva stop. They have roasted and BBQ pork, chicken, whole duck, cuttlefish, chicken feet, and lots of other food. You can buy the meats by the pound. You can also buy a whole or half roasted pig as well, you just need to pre order. I get the combo. There's a small and large one. It's rice, with one or two meats on it. With a sauce and ginger and scallion salsa. I get normally the chicken and BBQ pork. Tonight, the pictures are of something different. I got the roasted pork and BBQ pork with extra roasted pork.
