They also offer a gluten free option for an additional $10 which is great for accommodating different dietary needs. Have seen Gary's fresh mango cakes all over IG and with my Dad's recent birthday I convinced my sister to order one, instead of our usual mango cake from Saint Germaine bakery. Gary's only allows to order the fresh mango cakes up to one week ahead to ensure they have enough ripe mangos, which I admire their dedication. We ordered the 6 inch cake for 9 people (7 adults and 2 kids) and everyone got a thin to average slice. The cake is definitely prettier than the other fresh mango cakes on the market, has a lot more mangos that are perfectly ripe and sweet, there is less wipped cream, and the sponge cake is softer. The family agreed that Gary's has the best fresh mango cake but at $69 for a 6 inch cake, versus $43 for a 6 inch mango cake from Saint Germaine, a cake from Gary's is definitely a treat and for special occasions. Is Gary's worth the premium price? I think so but not everyone in my family agreed. One thing to note: Gary's do offer cake in a jar that's $8.50 each. When we went, they had a BOGO deal with the mango cake jars. My nephew asked my sister to buy the BOGO deal knowing that the 6 inch cake was not going to be enough, as the kids like having a second slice of cake. read more

Have only tried their mango cake - very sweet and draped in an abundance of well ripened mangoes. The mangoes were a bit soft/overly ripened and all of their cake designs are old fashioned. They actually have mango cakes in a jar, but there were none on the day that I visited. Instead, I got a pandan cake in a jar, which was terrible. Nothing but sponge cake and icing. Beautifully decorated with thick slices of mangoes on top, reasonable amount in the cake and thinner layer wrapped around the cake. I love the sweet mangoes as they are in season in July. Tasted the natural sweetness of mangoes without added ingredients. Also love the light level of whipped cream as I'm not a fan of cream. Gary's store is right on Kingsway in Vancouver, next to the small strip mall where the old Vancouver classic, Dai Tung Chinese Seafood Restaurant, used to be (now permanently closed). The cake shop is small and a bit cramped, with several staff working in the back and one person managing the front register. Unfortunately, they don't offer any nice gift bags--just basic plastic bags for 25 cents. It's a charming little cake shop, but don't expect much in the way of customer service. read more

Their cakes are very reasonably priced to boot. Their storefront is nothing to write home about, and there isnt a whole to to buy in the store. But I dont care, since you can just order your cake online and go pick it up. If having a humble nondescript storefront translates to lower prices for their high quality, im all for it. I wish I took a picture where there was more light, but the cake turned out well. We ordered a 4 inch ube cake and they ended up putting a rose on it. The rose was slightly brown on the outside but that's ok since it's not as noticeable. The cake itself wasn't too sweet and it was the perfect end to our meal. I remember ordering from here during the Pandemic and it was located in a warehouse in Burnaby? I don't remember, but I do remember getting their cake in the jar type of deal couple years ago. My friend ordered a Pandan Mung Bean cake from this place, and I went to pick it up, realizing it has a brick and mortar now! WOOT! Congrats it has a store now! So happy to see such great ideas & labour come to full fruition :D Anyways, I had a slice of that pandan mung bean cake and it was delicious!! The Mung beans really took over the flavour of the pandan in the cake, but overall it was extremely delicious. If I would just have the pandan flavour on it, it was perfect, and fluffly and light. Came back for more of their cakes in jars (we like the portion size and the fact that they can be kept for a few days with a simple jar twist) and were pleased very happy with the quality and consistency of 3/4 cakes this visit. This time we got their red velvet and black forest again which are usually both family favourites didnt stand out the way it did before. The tangy cream cheese pairs well with the not too sweet cake but I found it too dry this time and the black forest's chocolate sponge was also not too sweet and reminiscent of a classic asian chocolate cake. We also got the white chocolate strawberry cake and it was a simple strawberry and white sponge layer cake. The strawberry sauce was a little bit sweet but it paired well with the fluffy cake when eaten in one spoonful! Finally, the purple yam was a big surprise and not in a good way. The colour was definitely not purple..but brown. I was really excited to try this and got too anxious about getting sick to try it so I contacted Gary about this to gain a bit of understanding. His staff replied immediately saying that he was off for the night but he replied the next day and said that this batch of yams was different colour. I was in the neighbourhood and knew Gary's Patisserie was somewhere there. I decided to look for it and tried to buy his cakes in a jar. The shop is away from the crowd and busy streets. I saw a yellow sign (sandwich board) outside the shop and customers went to pick up the food, so I knew I found it. I knew people preordered the cakes in advance but I did not. I asked whether or not they had some existing cakes in a jar that I could buy and try because it was my first time. I chose the durian and chestnut cakes in a jar. They were on sale as well. That's perfect. I tried both. Wow I loved the durian cake in a jar. I could eat the real durian fruit and the jar and cake smelt so good!! The chestnut paste in the jar was like one from the chestnut cakes that I bought from other Chinese bakeries. It tasted great as well. The cakes were not too sweet. I plan to go back and want to try other flavours. The label on the lid of the jar shows what ingredients Gary uses for the cakes. It looks like they are very natural and he doesn't put other chemical ingredients in the cakes. I just love the cakes and their quality. I chanced upon this place, or rather the sandwich board, when I was at YVR Prep to pick up food from a Pop-up chef. I bookmarked it and eventually placed an order online. The cakes looked amazingly delicious! My friend was enamored with the picture of the mango cake. It looked epic with lots of mango slices covering it and topped with many slices of mango to look like a flower. One day I will order that, when mangoes are back in season. It's purely a layer of chunky fruits, whipped cream, and sponge cake, it was disappointing and underwhelming. I was looking for a cake for my Dad's birthday so I went to my favourite hub to find the go-to places, Yelp! I came across a couple bakeries but Gary's Patisserie stood out, with a variety of eye-pleasing designs. He is a local baker running his business out of a commissary kitchen so the location can be easy to miss if you aren't looking carefully. All orders must be placed online in advance where you can schedule a pick-up date and time (keep in mind at least 1 day notice is needed). Gary has a wide selection of baked goods such as Coffee Cake, which we ultimately decided to get. The cake was decorated with an overflow of toppings like chocolate shavings, chocolate coffee beans, and chocolate whipped cream. As you can see, this isn't just for the coffee lovers! The cake and filling was very smooth, rich, and thick with the right amount of moisture. The size (we got a 6") was also very good for the price, enough to feed 4 people for a few days! Even up to the details, the cake was packaged securely, careful not to crush the top. (Check out the included pictures! Warning, salivation trigger!) Aside from the cake, we also ordered Cake in a Jar's. They are a great way to sample his selection without having to order a full size and they make perfect gifts (for your loved ones or even yourself, no judgement ;)) No matter the occasion, Gary seems to have it all. If you're looking for something light, try out the Cookies in a Jar. For events (in the long awaited post-COVID future), he offers cake platters, extravagant custom 3D cakes and beautiful tiered wedding cakes. Taste: I've tried his mango cake previously at a relative's baby shower and immediately loved the presentation! There are large mango chunks throughout the cake and as another reviewer noted, not overwhelmed by copious amounts of whipping cream. I'm lactose intolerant but was able to eat a large slice without feeling any side effects, so i was pleasantly surprised. There were a few slices that weren't as sweet but I wouldn't say it was sour. Their sponge cake is not as dense as the typical Western sponge cakes, but I've had lighter sponge. My brother noted that he preferred this in-between sponge density and thought it worked best with the cake with the large mango chunks. Presentation: I'm just amazed that it's possible to slice the mango into such fine precise slices and then arrange it into petals. Wow! The petals do tend to fall off in groups as you start cutting the cake so make sure you take your pictures beforehand. Logistics: Pickup was clear and easy to understand. There's a small sign outside of the door that has a button to press for pickup.
