This was my first time ever having something dry cleaned. I called and spoke with Jay about a tuxedo jacket I needed dry cleaned. I let him know I had worn it for the first time on 5/26/25 for a wedding, about five hours straight. There was no damage or visible stains, but the inside of the jacket, specifically the armpit area, had a little deodorant/sweat odor from wearing it for hours. Jay reassured me they could take care of it. I had originally gone to another place first, I walked into SF Green Clean, which said they couldn't remove armpit sweat odor with dry cleaning. (To be fair, the woman I spoke with there was very sweet, so no complaints on her customer service.) That's how I ended up at Sonia's Dry Cleaners. Jay told me they'd be able to handle it, and if I wasn't satisfied after the first attempt, they'd clean it again at no extra charge. He mentioned if needed there were other chemicals they could use to get a smell out if needed/depending on the material of the jacket and that prices would vary if needed, but he looked at it and quoted me when I dropped it off for $25. I dropped it off on 5/28/25 with no rush order. When I picked it up on 6/9/25 and checked it, the odor was still present. I went back inside and spoke with Mary at the front--she was VERY kind. I pointed out the specific area I was hoping they could focus on, and she told me it would be ready by 6/12/25 and that they'd call or text me when it was done. On pickup day, I called ahead and spoke with Jay again. He was EXTREMELY kind and made it clear they truly wanted to earn my business. He even said they'd be willing to clean it a third or fourth time if necessary. That level of care and professionalism really stood out. I expected I might have to ask for a refund or run into a problem, but instead, the whole interaction was handled smoothly and respectfully. When I picked up the jacket, the smell in the armpit area was completely gone. It looked and smelled brand new, bagged and ready for the next event. It was in a clear bagged packaging and had a metal copper hanger (the copper hanger was encased in a wrapped paper like material but seeing the metal iron worried me because I've had old copper hangers rust/leave the copper residue on materials, thankfully this one didn't, but I also assume since it's wrapped that it's not meant to be hanging on it long term, but just an observation for someone who might worry like I do) I was originally leaning toward a 3-star rating because I had to return for a second cleaning and didn't receive the call/text updates I was told to expect (Mary did mention their system may have been down). But their exceptional customer service, especially the way Jay and Mary handled everything completely won me over. That extra effort earned the business 4 stars. (The dock was having to come back in due to it looking/smelling the same which was mentioned my main concern, and them not contacting me when they said it'd be ready both times) I don't know the price of more dry cleaning items but thankfully I don't do dry cleaning so often. I'll definitely be back and will update my review after my next visit. Thank you! read more

I brought two pairs of pants here for a simple hem over a week ago. They charge a premium price of $40 per pair. For that price, the alterations should have been done in a couple of days, not over a week. To make matters worse, the receipt said they would be ready to pick up at 5:00 PM, but the shop closes exactly at 5:00 PM, which makes absolutely no sense. When I picked up my pants, they couldn't locate them because they had my phone number under a different name. My receipt had my correct name and phone number on it. You would think whatever they printed out would be what's in their system. If a business is going to charge top-tier prices for basic alterations, they need to manage their scheduling and organization properly. Extremely frustrating experience. read more

I have to update my review! I had the tailors at Sonia's add a new corset closure to the back of my wedding dress and it came out perfectly! Being able to adjust it made the dress soooo much more comfortable and I didn't have to worry about potentially gaining/losing weight before the big day. They also added a wristlet to pull up the train and were so thorough. The value was amazing as they also gave me the best price. 1000% recommend for all occasions. read more

This place is terrible. I would give them zero stars if I could. I took my bridesmaid dress here to be altered and when I received it back there was a hole in the front of the dress. They had damaged my dress while altering it and took no accountability for ruining my garment. The man that did the alterations was rude and dismissive, suggesting that because the dress wasn't a high end piece it didn't matter that it had been damaged. The person at the front desk told me the manager would be in touch with me about the incident, I never heard from him and have made multiple attempts to reach out to him myself regarding a refund for my damaged dress. It was like $55 for a 24 hour expedited cleaning for a suit jacket, pants, and shirt. Service was great and straight forward. I was a walk-in needing a quick clean for an event and was really surprised they were able to get me in. I guess it depends but in general you should plan ahead. I've been putting off dry cleaning my wedding suit for a minute - it still had drunk stains on it hahahah. And the second an abrupt formal event popped up within a week, I was like uhhh this is gona be tough. But it ended up working out! I think the value is good - I never went to dry-cleaning before but the quality of my suit when I got it back look brand spankin' new!! I will go here because its local and seems nice and affordable. These people are absolutely outstanding. I brought them my favorite Carhartt jacket. Well worn and well loved, but so well worn that my hands were getting cold from the huge holes in the pockets. I wasn't sure what to expect when I got it, but let me say my jaw dropped. They went above and beyond and patched parts of the jacket that I didn't even know had holes in them ! They did such an amazing job, I don't normally even leave reviews but this was well deserving. Shoutout Rachel I believe who did this ? I'm in town for a job interview and realized my pants are missing a button. I walked in asking if they had any extra buttons so I could sew one on, and the kindest, welcoming young woman helped me. She didn't charge me for the button. I was taken aback by her continued kindness. There are plenty of kind people out there, thank you for being one of them. Guy kept telling me that the coat I wanted to clean was a "raincoat" when it was clearly not a raincoat. It was a 100% cotton (with polyester inner lining) coat with no waterproof coating. It is a Uniqlo C trench coat - https://www.uniqlo.com/au/en/products/E474938-000/00?colorDisplayCode=34&sizeDisplayCode=003 Because of this the price went from $35 to $65 dollars to dry clean this coat. We were going on a trip and had to choice but to bite the bullet. Then the guy said it would take 5 business days, and I said I can't do that, then he said no problem, I can get this done by Monday (3 business days). When I came in Monday, the same guy told me that my ticket says Thursday and I told him that he was the one who said they could do Monday. Then he said to wait and that the coat may be done, tuned out that the belt needed more work so I had to come in the next day to pick that up. Not a great operation in my honest opinion, will look for other dry cleaners in the future. YMMV. read more

Ruined my daughters flower girl dress for my wedding this weekend. I brought a brand new $300 dress from Anthropologie to Sonia's to be let out at the seams slightly for more comfort to move around in. The dress still has the tags on and the dress is damaged. Looks like the sewing machine almost ate the dress. It's white satin so it's very hard to get a good picture showing the damage but I paid almost $100 just to have the seams at the waist (inside the dress) be let out and instead was given a damaged dress with no explanation. I just took the dress out of the plastic and I know they had no intention of telling me about the damage. I would like an immediate refund. It's the least they can do for damaging my daughter's dress immediately prior to my wedding where there's not enough time to buy a new one. read more

I wish I didnt have to write this review, but I have not heard back from anyone here about my problem so I feel like I have no choice! I brought my bridesmaids dress in to be altered. Had the hips taken in, and the straps shortened. The front desk staff member was very sweet and attentive, and the tailor seemed to understand. I went back to get my dress, tried it on in store and felt good. The changing area is quite small so I think I rushed checking the dress because when I went home and tried it again, I noticed the straps had barely been touched. They were almost just as long as they were before. I contacted Sonias Cleaners via email, they replied promptly and told me to bring it in and they would fix it. At this stage I had only 5 days to get my dress back before I left for the wedding. Again, the tailor pinned up my straps as needed, and I left it with them. I went back to pick it up a few days later, and didnt have time to try it on in store (my mistake) but I was rushing. I went home that evening, tried it on and only one strap had been shortened. My dress is now completely off kilter! One strap is longer, and the neckline is very obviously off balance... I emailed again right away with pictures, and have not gotten a reply, its been 2 days now and I am leaving today. This is incredibly disappointing, I feel like my dress is now ruined. I had to find a tailor who can fix it in the location of the wedding, and pay for expedited service on top of already paying for the messed up alteration in the first place. I only had a few weeks left to get my bridesmaid dress hemmed for a wedding. I called several places, and many weren't available to do a quick turnaround time - except Sonia's Cleaners! Stephanie is their seamstress, and she did a wonderful job. I needed alterations done - just the length, and she was able to get it done within 1.5 weeks. The price was more than expected, $135 (although she gave me a 10% discount), but completely worth every penny. The dress looked fantastic, and also, the turnaround time was very, very fast. I am extremely pleased with the service from Stephanie! She is a very personable lady too, who really wanted to make sure that the length was what the bride wanted. Wonderful job!!!!!! There are new owners and operators of Sonia's which we've used for laundry and fold over a decade. We brought in shirts for laundry and fold, which were entered into our previous customer account and charged as dry clean and deliver on hanger, about a 60% markup. We asked the new front staff to why the change in the order entry and difference in costs, and they stated they were new and couldn't explain why our customer profile had been changed. The new, temporary staff tried to be helpful, stating they would contact the new owners and call us back with an explanation. We received no call, and returned to the store to retrieve our shirts, and were told it had closed early. It's not clear if the new owners are focused on their associated hotel market or Sonia's traditional customer base. read more

Sonia Cleaners is great! I brought in a tuxedo for cleaning and tailoring and they did a fabulous job! They shortened my tuxedo paints for me and dry cleaned the whole outfit. The tailoring took less than a week and was perfect. I messaged them on Yelp to find a time to come in and they responded right away. Price was super affordable as well and everyone there was friendly and helpful. I appreciate the timelines in which my items were ready for pick up. There's not high expectations for a cleaners except they don't ruin your items. They gave me a ticket and a text once my items were ready but there wasn't any follow up after that. I wish they would send another notification if you haven't come within 30 days to get your items. read more

I would not trust this place with my business due to poor staffing and being told different answers about whether they would alter my dress from multiple different people. I first messaged on yelp over the weekend to see if they could fix a dress for me. They said to come by Monday and drop it off. I came in Monday at 4:50pm (10 mins before close) and the door was locked and no one answered when I knocked on the door. I called their phone number and was told their employee would be coming back shortly. They then told me to come back Tuesday and they would fix my dress by this Thursday but to call an hour before to confirm having a fitting appointment with their tailor. I did so today and was told to come by and the tailor would be there. I then came in and was told by another employee that the tailor left for the day because they were feeling sick. I spent about an hour driving back and forth to this store after being told on the phone or through yelp that they would take my business and was turned away two separate days because they, in fact, could not take my business. Sounds like this place needs a supervisor so that everyone can be on the same page. Wouldn't recommend. read more

I was looking for someone to alter my formal dress for a black tie wedding and this place delivered! The dress was too long on me with my heels and it needed to be hemmed. The lady helping me was very sweet and determined to make sure it was pinned to the correct length. I really appreciated her attention to detail. I brought my dress in 2.5 weeks before the wedding and it was ready on time. Crazy rip off. They charge 5 times the amount most other places in the area charge. Came here once, not making that mistake again. Got some alterations done that usually cost $10-$15 at other places. I honestly thought they handed me some one else's bill when I looked at it. I was like there's no way it's $110 to hem two pairs of pants. Each pair of pants only cost $30. I couldn't believe it. It was my fault for not asking the price before but every other place I've gone to it's never been more that $20 to get alterations like this done. You're much better off going to Sparkles, better customer service, WAY better prices and great quality work. I felt completely robbed by this place. I don't know how people go there. read more

I'm about to move into the Richmond district and saw that Sonia's Cleaners is nearby. It's always a hit or miss with these places, so I brought in 4 pairs of pants with the request for shortening... test them out and see how the service and quality of work is. The guy seemed nice, and there was a woman behind him who welcomed me to the neighborhood. They entered in my information to create an account, and then wrote down my alteration requests. I asked if it would be possible to complete the order by May 31st, letting them know that I had to pack that day and fly out early morning on June 1st for a work trip. They said it wouldn't be a problem. I left feeling optimistic, that Sonia's Cleaners would be my go-to for dry cleaning and alteration services. Boy, was I wrong. It's now May 31st and I had finished my hospital shift at 4am. I started getting my things together and called Sonia's Dry Cleaners at 10am (they open at 9am) to see if my pants were ready for pick up. After a few rings, a man finally picked up -- it was the same guy who helped me last week. I asked if my pants were ready for pick up, to which he asked if I could call back later because he wasn't at the shop. Apparently, this phone number on Yelp is his personal cell phone. I told him that it wouldn't be a problem and asked if I should call back in one hour... he said to make it 1 1/2 hours (11:30am). I said, no problem. It was 11:45am, and I called back. No answer. Having little time left to get packed, eat a meal and sleep early for tomorrow's early-morning flight, I decided to drive all the way to Sonia's -- hoping that my pants would be ready, as promised. When I got there around 1pm, that same guy came up to the front and asked how he could be of assistance. I provided my information and then he went to the back to check. After about 30 seconds, he came back stating that one pair was still being worked on, so I'd have to come back later. I asked why it wasn't ready yet, to which he stated that orders don't have to ready until the end of the day, with this droopy-eyed, I-don't-give-a-shit look on his face. I asked what time "end of the day" was, to which he replied, "4-5pm"... giving me that same look and attitude. Now, keep in mind: as a new customer, I was never made aware of this "end of day" policy, and it wasn't making the helping the situation to get an attitude. With my clothes held hostage, I had no other choice than to come back. At approximately 3:20pm, a text suddenly comes to my phone -- stating that my alterations are ready. I'm like, "WTF... you guys never told me about this service!" If I had known that I'd be notified via text--during my initial visit, during my 10am follow up call with the guy, and/or during my follow up visit--I wouldn't have wasted my time. I drove all the way back to Sonia's and was now met by the women from last week. I gave her my information, and she brought my pants to the front counter. I told her to remove my account information from the system because I wouldn't be coming back. She asked why, so I told her everything. Her response? "Oh... I'm sorry, but you know... we expedited your order because you said you needed it sooner." Her deflection clearly told me that neither of them were going to take accountability for what happened, so I just told her that it had nothing to do with anything that transpired today. She then said, "Okay, well... anyway..." with this whatever attitude, so I just replied, "yeah... anyway...". From there, I paid, took my pants and walked out. Brought the pants home and found that for $145, the quality of their alteration work wasn't even worth the price. It's amazing how quickly these dry cleaning places can flip their personalities. It's happy and "we can do anything for you... no problem" when you drop off your clothes, but then it turns into this "anyway..." and go f$%* yourself attitude when things go wrong and they refuse to take accountability. And they know they can behave this way because you have to pay to get your clothes back. This is the hit or miss that I was talking about. Some of my colleagues who currently live in the area are also looking for a good dry cleaners, and they were asking me to let them know how it went with Sonia's. I'll be telling them to go elsewhere, and recommend you do the same. Response to owner's post: The beginning of your perspective is true, but the latter part is not: I was never told about a call/text upon completion, and you did give an attitude... you didn't realize it because you're the one giving it. And while I appreciate the expedited service, it's completely irrelevant. At this point, I'm not going to argue with you because it's clear that we have different perspectives of what happened that day. And just so you know: after picking up my pants and leaving your shop, a female customer followed me out and agreed that your co-worker's attitude about what happened was "messed up". I will say, she does great work. The dresses I had her hem and the sleeves I had her hem on two cardigans were done really well however, to hem the dresses, each one was $55; to hem the sleeves of the cardigans, each one was $24. So pretty pricey in my opinion and pretty much doubled the price of the items I bought. So after this experience, I have told myself that I will not purchase clothing that needs work. She does have a dressing room where you can get changed and she'll do measurements. read more

I am a COVID bride and got my dress altered here (taking straps up). I inquired at a few places and Sonia's had the most reasonable price and the quickest availability and turn around time. It's easy to reach the business as Alfonso is very responsive on Yelp messaging. Stephanie, the tailor, was really nice and did a great job on my dress and straps which is very impressive as I have a lace bodice. She took the time to consult with me and confirmed that just taking the straps up vs also taking in the bodice would give me the look I want to achieve. I mentioned also that my hem was also a bit long but she recognized that it was a smaller wedding and didn't push me to hem it saying I could save some money. That really shows to me that this business cares more about its customers than money. The work was done in a week which is amazing and I would definitely recommend them. read more

I brought a basic jacket here they charged me $20 to dry clean. Then brought a warmer jacket they charged me $25 to dry clean. They said this is because of the lining. Do they overcharge everyone or just new customers? Went back to my old dry cleaner in Hayes Valley where they charge $7.80 regardless of the jacket. I did that thing that all bad bridesmaids do when they have 6 months to get their dress hemmed and then go 3 days before the wedding. Guys, I used to manage a bridesmaids dress store. Do you have any idea how many people I've told to get their lives together and get their dresses hemmed on time? Omg. Anyway, I found Sonia on Yelp and rushed over on a Wednesday afternoon. I got into the small changing room so she could pin me up, but I forgot my shoes. Seriously? I wanted to hit myself. She suggested multiple times that I should just go home and get them because she didn't want to accidentally hem too short. Long story, but I couldn't do that. So she patiently dealt with me standing on my tippy toes forever, let me rest several times because my calves were burning, and instead of getting frustrated with me she kept apologizing like I wasn't the one that messed everything up. As she promised my dress was completed the very next day. She rushed to do it before she flew out of town. This dress was no joke... 4 layers of super flowy chiffon... like so much chiffon she couldn't even find the 4th layer. And guess what!? The length was PERFECT. I was singing her praises for that whole wedding day. AND she steamed my dress and fixed a run. No knock on the other bridesmaid... but her dress was wrinkled AF and I was overjoyed that I didn't have to look like her. Sonia, you're the bomb-dot-com. And your shop is completely out of my way, but I will definitely give you all of my tailoring and dry cleaning business for the rest of my life (in SF). read more
