Ray is a true tailor. He has been working at his craft all of his adult life. It's hard to find such a talented craftsperson. I brought a suit that the pants and jacket sleeves needed to be altered. The moment I started talking to Ray, I knew this was easy for him. He said it would be ready in a week but it was actually ready the next day! Express Alterations is no joke. His location was out of the way for me but well worth the trip! I believe any tailor or alterations location downtown would have charged way more and made a bigger deal about what they had to do. I have a trip coming up and my regular tailor wasn't avail. I found Ray on Yelp. Wasn't too far from my house. He responded quickly, schedule my appt. I had 2 pairs of linen pants and a dress. Came in on a Thursday afternoon, pick up Tuesday afternoon. If he was to have gotten them done early, he'd call me. Ray did a fantastic job (decades doing alterations at Macy's & Bloomingdale's), used original bottoms and he didn't change the style. He's thorough in what he's going to do, his prices are more than fair (regular lady $100 for 1 pair of pants, Ray $25). I enjoyed chatting w/ him. He knows what he's doing. Not only was he able to do this for a very reasonable price, he was very kind and flexible about working around my schedule for when to come by for a fitting and when to pick it up, even offering outside of his stated hours! On top of that, the dress I brought in had a very complicated bust line to alter and he worked with me on it to find a solution I was happy with, and the end result is beautiful! I hate it when the back of the suit rolls up in the neck area because it makes the suit look cheap and sloppy. One of his many specialities are to shorten up the back of the suit jacket for that perfect flat look. Ray was really nice and easy to work with. He's coming from Hawaii and was very proud to tell us his story. Everything was done quickly (had a suit pant that needed some adjustments) and professionally for $20 (including a $5 " rush " fee for orders with less than a week delay). Ray is overpriced and does poor quality work. He botched 3 of my shirts and then tried lying to me. You are better off going to Josh's Tailoring and Design or Spoon Tailors, both in SF. These guys are masters of their craft and their prices are much more competitive than Ray's outrageously overpriced rates. Just like Amazon displaced Sears with more competitive pricing and better customer experience, places like Josh's and Spoon Tailors will displace inferior tailors such as Ray. I paid $45 a shirt to have the sleeves shortened only for Ray to ruin them. Out of 6 shirts he botched 3 of them. 1. He used ink to mark the alteration line on 3 of the shirts. After cleaning the shirts the ink spread (as it should) and ruined the sleeves of the shirt. 2. When I first pointed this out to Ray he lied to me and said he used pencil. Obviously it was not pencil after the shirts were washed. 3. He made the sleeves too short. So much for his claims of being an expert tailor who boasted about his glory days of making custom suits. 4. He credited me $45 to do another shirt. After this I realized that all of the 3 shirts could no longer be worn because they were too short. 5. I only went with Ray because he puts on this charming facade and brags about his past experience. Save yourself some money and headache by visiting another tailor. I spent a total of $360 with Ray. This includes the 3 shirts mentioned above as well as several other items - jacket, pants, and other shirts. I repurchased 2 of the 3 shirts, since I could no longer wear the ones Ray stitched, and asked Ray to alter the sleeves, but he refused. He then went on a tirade about loosing money. Loosing money? I lost 3 good shirts. Don't waste your time here. Ray is a relic from a past era longing for his glory days of when he was a master at his craft. Take your clothing and money elsewhere for better service and more competitive pricing. I hope you are reading this Ray. Your business will be in further decline. read more

Still excellent and friendly. Since my original review he has also completely altered a pair of pants for the BF, they were quite possibly 3-4 sizes too big (they BF liked the material and took a chance that Ray would be able to work his magic) and they now fit perfect. I have known Ray for 5 years now and he is the best tailor I have ever met. There was a pillow that needed sewed and he did it at any hour I wanted to. That was 3 years ago and the stitch is still staying. Even after I moved to El Sobrante there were 2 jackets that needed shortened and the slack taken out of the back of them and he measured me in under 10 minutes. Ray is the tailoring man! I took my rock and republic jeans to Ray at 8pm and he had it done perfectly by 11pm. I wouldn't trust any other person chopping my expensive denim down to size. Making boot cut jeans to straight leg jeans is no problem for him. Unlike many other alteration places.. You can understand what Ray says and Ray understands you perfectly lol Super nice guy! I never thought I would have a tailor, because, well I dress like crap. But after having to be measured for a suit, Ray is now my tailor for life. He took his time, informed me of what to buy/how to fit clothes, and overall just made what I thought would be a pain in the butt into a really pleasant experience. It's taken me 36 years to realize that how well your clothes fit is a lot more important than the label on them, and now that I have a skilled, friendly affordable tailor right here in the neighborhood, maybe I'll start looking a bit more presentable. Ray jokingly told me that we could put the wedding on hold if he didn't finish my suits in time. ***nervous laughter on my part*** Ray got it done and I looked like a champ. He's not particularly cheap ...or expensive, but he did quality work on time. One thing that's a little tough is that he is one man show, and not always there during business hours, so call ahead to make sure. Went to Ray's because of all the great reviews and dropped two suits off for alterations two weeks before the wedding. He was a good guy, said he'll definitely get the suits altered within two weeks, and everything seemed peachy. Came back two weeks later (yesterday) like he said in the late afternoon and after ten minutes of him searching for the suits found out they hadn't been worked on since I dropped them off. He said he thought he had done them, but actually worked on another guy's suits (I expect a stellar review from that guy saying, "Damn quick! Dropped my suits off and got them altered in less than a week when he said two! Will be going back!" You know, typical Yelp boilerplate great review language. Anyways, no altered suits, it was late afternoon, and wedding was the next morning. WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF He was able to alter one of the suits the same day, which was great, but again, had two weeks to make the alterations. The other suit will be altered past the deadline he himself gave and assured me. Didn't offer a discount, but more importantly didn't offer an apology. Ray probably deserves all the 5 stars from other customers - he's a friendly guy (when you first meet him), he's very experienced, the alterations he does are on point, his prices are reasonable, and he's probably on time according to all the other reviews. But in my case, as a first time customer, given the reasonable amount of time to make the alterations, this wasn't a positive experience in the end. Suits weren't done in the timeframe he himself gave and guaranteed me given the circumstances of the situation and I'll have to think twice before coming back to him. Oh yeah, Ray doesn't answer his phones. Yes, I said PHONES. You would think have multiple options of communication would mean there would be more opportunities for actual communication. When working with garments such as cashmere jackets, tailored Italian and British suiting, Japanese denim and the like, a great relationship with a talented tailor is a requirement to keep my clients fitted through the seasons. Ray is very nice and helpful. I had pants, shirts, and jackets tailored by him. Here's my honest review of his work: His sewing and actual craftsmanship seems to be good. So far nothing has ripped. Although there were several times where I would have extra seams. Part of being a tailor IMO should not just be what the customer wants, but what is actually possible. Half of the shirts I've tailored were too slim for me. Yes I asked for slim but half of my shirts were too slim. I never fought with him and he never gave me recommendations. Majority of my blazers ended up being a waste. One of my jacket was pretty much a waste since I can barely move my arms up. I'm sure a good tailor should have known better. This may partially be my fault but I'm not the professional here. I most likely spent over over $600 with him and had to throw away well over 1k worth of clothes away. read more

I've come to Ray a few times now. I've had suits and khakis tailored here, and they look fantastic. Ray is the nicest individual you can meet as well, and makes the whole experience enjoyable. The work is quality, affordable, and the return times are very convenient (I've requested a suit that needed shortened sleeves, sleeves taken in, sides taken in, button shifted, pants hemmed and got it back in a week and a half). Don't judge a book by its cover on this one. Its a small shop in an unassuming neighborhood, but this is where you want to go for tailoring.
