For the sake of full disclosure, I must admit to being an RI Chinese buffet veteran. Yet somehow, I had missed this one -- until last night. Hong Kong Buffet in Cranston came highly recommended, and luckily we arrived early because within minutes, the line went out the door and into the parking lot. I find it difficult to rate the experience, as it was all over the map. The selection would be one-starred as it offered much less than the others in Woonsocket or East Greenwich, however, I could also give it a four as there were several entrees I have not seen anywhere else (including a tasty General Tsao's shrimp and a shockingly OK prime rib.) They even had a somewhat unique Chinese beef stew, that featured water chestnuts and Chinese cabbage in a traditional Worcestershire sauce. Unfortunately, there were many outright awful entrees, too. The batter-dipped, deep-fried sushi was flavorless, the egg rolls were gross and mushy, and the mussels on the half-shell were downright terrifying. Yet, I must offer five stars for the soft serve ice cream machine. Thank goodness I didn't get to follow a half dozen sticky little kids digging with dirty scoops into the ice cream containers like they do at he other buffets. Overall, it should have been much better. But anyone who goes to one of these expecting a gourmet experience should have their head examined anyway. read more

It took me almost 5 months to discover this little gem. I visited on a Friday night and the restaurant was completely packed. Consequently, food were fresh with empty trays being replaced frequently but drinks were not refilled unless asked. If I have to shell out 13.50 for dinner then I will put as many crabs/mussels/clams on my plates as possible. I will not fill my stomach with cheap items such as fried rice or wonton soup. Better than most of the Chinese buffets here in Rhode Island. A large variety of buffet items and they also have a sushi chef onsite. They always have several different rolls to choose from. I was delightfully surprised. I only went here because my boyfriend was dying for a buffet. We arrived around 5 pm, and you could tell the food was freshly cooked. Everything was spotless. I tried the chow mein, fried rice, roasted chicken and veggies, as well as dumplings and crab Rangoon. It isn't the best Chinese food I've ever had, but the variety is great, and the cleanliness was impressive. I'd definitely come again. read more

So, of all the Chinese buffets I have been to, I have to say that while the food is good here, there is not as much of a selection as I have seen in other places and yet they are priced much higher then other places. The waitstaff is not very personable whatsoever. The restaurant is very clean from what I can tell. Anytime I have been there, the selection is always the same. I would recommend that they try changing up what is being served every now and then. Also, keep up on the sushi a little more. That area always seems to fall short with what is available. If you are in the area and hungry, then by all means go here to eat. But, if you have time, look for another Buffett with better ratings. read more

Thanks to a Southwest over hour delay in my departure I had time to find a place for lunch. Followed Yelps rating and comments and found this close to the airport. Maybe one of the best Chinese Buffets ever and I have been to a lot. Not 500 things but a good assortment with far above average. quality and flavor. They prepare smaller quantities and refill often. I rarely go to buffets, but I went here a few times with my father. The woman who serves could be a little more, what's the word I'm looking for -- enthusiastic, perhaps? She always looks uninterested when taking orders and seems very uptight. Not a good sign. The food was mediocre. Good chicken though, however the boiled rice tasted like crap. I had to fuciously drown it in brown gravy to avoid tasting it. The steamer pot, if it deserves to be called a pot more like a "kiddie cup", should be a little bigger if you plan on serving buffet style rice. Not to mention it's not even near the food, but rather all the way towards the back where the soup is. Good, keep that nasty rice isolated please. The "desserts" they have on display are a joke. Little Debbie puts out better cakes than these fools, and for cheaper! Not much of a variety either. I've had way better Chinese food than this place that's for sure. read more

Sigh, I don't know why my folks like this place so much...it perplexes me to no end, but allow me to shed some light for veteran buffet goers to sway you either "yay" or "nay." First of all, this buffet is the most Americanized Chinese buffet that I've ever been to. To some, that may be highly sought after, with almost every imaginable dish served on the "pu-pu platter" available in the buffet line. However, apart from all of the greasy fried foods, there was nothing remotely authentically Chinese in the buffet. However, there were positives as well. They did have some dishes that were a bit of a surprise: the filet mignon, grilled salmon, decent sushi and sauteed crab. Also, I was really impressed by the use of microphones by the managers to constantly alert the cooks in the back to refill the food. Finally, the smelts and the seaweed salad were a decent surprise, but unfortunately, were all that I really ate. One of the worst buffets that we had! We have been tasting different buffet in California, Boston, Ohio, Florida, and Texas. You can tell that their meats are not fresh and made them either dark or coloring with various dressing (I was told be a Chinese buffet chef, saying that's the typical way to "cover" the unfreshness). We were not impressed with the services either. First time and will be the last time because we gave it a try for vacation. We should read those reviews beforehand. This location and buffet style Chinese Restaurant has come a long way over the years. Right now I think they are very good at providing a high quality buffet for a reasonable price. They also serve a full menu and have opened a self serve frozen yogurt not far from this location. The buffet offers plenty of sweets and self serve ice cream for you. Fresh fruit, cookies and puddings. I always see people eating the fruit, cookies and ice cream all the time. You can also stop by on a busy night on your way home and get the Buffet to go by the pound, I think it's $7.99. This is a great feature for someone in a rush or on the go. You can fill your box with all your goodies and be in and out in 5 minutes. I am a huge Peking Ravioli or Fried Dumplings fan. When they originally opened they served a premade heavy doughed version, it was OK and filling but nothing great. Now who ever the Chef is or who ever decided homemade was the way to go made the right call. They now use a homemade dough with a homemade pork and Chinese cabbage filling. You don't even know the cabbage is there, it is used like parley. They are delicious. At the buffet they are always waiting for you and always hot, juicy and tender with just enough crust. If you are a big a fan of Peking Raviolis like me you can get an order from the menu and ask them to fry them well on one side, or get some steamed they are both full of flavor and nice and juicy. They also offer sushi at the buffet and my friend is a sushi junky and eats plates of it along with chilled peel your own shrimp. The friend rice has been economized and only onions and pork are used. No egg and beans sprouts. I find it very good and use it instead of white rice now. Beef and Chicken teriyaki are very good. The Mandarin Chicken is also flavorful dark meat. The Generals Chicken can be super awesome when fresh and with large chunks. When the pieces get small or too much sauce and not enough chicken I wait for a new order. The peppery shrimp and General Tao's Shrimp are both very good. You have to watch out if you try the peppery shrimp, one segment of shell and the tail are left on those shrimp. Generals are all peeled and deveined and shell-less. Many patrons where getting the boneless chicken fried with sweet and sour or brown gravy. When I was nearby 3 guests came back just for brown gravy. I stirred it well and it was hot and tasty, a little bland for salt or dipped food, but it worked well. Crab Rangoon where decent, sweet but not greasy. They also had boneless teriyaki salmon and some other boneless fish. Along with egg foo young, lo mien, soups, white rice. Even fries, chicken nuggets and pizza for the little ones. They where a few other beef, chicken and vegetable stir frys and everyone was eating them and getting refills. They do one unique thing here, hostess and line chief go from stations to stations and if refills are needed they use a wireless mic and give refill orders to kitchen right away. Bottom line as far as Buffets and Chinese restaurants go this is well worth trying for the value alone, not to mention good, hot, tasty food. If your are in the Knightsville section of Cranston, or just looking for some reasonable good Chinese food give Hong Kong Buffet a shot. They have a nice variety of food options all of which I found tasty. I had a serving of nearly every item and I particularly enjoyed their Singapore Noodles and Sesame Chicken. As far a ambience, it looks like your average $13 buffet with ample parking. Update: When I go again I'll be sure to avoid the shrimp. Needless to say, I was very disappointed. First of all, the waitresses were not attentive at all. My family of 5 & I had to ask for refills a couple different times and I must say, the small cups aren't helping them either. They might want to up their cup size. There's a reason why I haven't been here in years and now I know why. The food was horrible. You can tell it had been sitting out for awhile and the lady calling the orders refused to call for a new batch. She kept stirring it over as if she was trying to hide the dried up noodles which stuck out like a sore thumb. My whole family and I was not at impressed with the food selections. My friend and I discovered this restaurant today after our first choice was closed for some reason. I am so glad we discovered HK buffet. The servers were very attentive and always refilled out water right away. The buffet was filled with typical Chinese American dishes but also included some Vietnamese Spring Rolls and a sushi bar with excellent sushi. The sushi bar itself far surpassed any typical sushi bar where the rolls sit out for too long. There was a sushi chef making rolls for you if you wanted something different. Some of the more unique items on the menu were the stir fried crab, some clam dishes and doughboys. I suspect these items are for the RI palate as I have never seen these at a Chinese Buffet before. It was a great week at the gym, so I figured I'd go grab some Chinese buffet as a reward for myself. I found my buddy who usually joins me for this venture, and we headed north for our usual spot, talking up how pumped up we were to be going the entire way. We pulled into the parking lot and, oh no, it can't be...our usual spot was closed down! Thank goodness for technology because we were not going to be denied. Grab the cell, get on Yelp! and find the closest Chinese buffet. It was a bit farther out than we were headed, but not too far - so off to Hong Kong Buffet we went. The buffet was very clean and continuously refilled. The service was friendly and super efficient. Our empty plates were cleared before we could even get back up to the table. It was a nice touch to have free refills on our sodas since that isn't always the case at these buffets. The prices are more than reasonable. My intention was high protein; any meat, especially meat on sticks - a huge weakness of mine. The chicken and beef teriyaki were both delicious and above average. I sampled some wings, pork chops, boneless ribs and a few others. They were all better than most buffets I've frequented. There was a sushi station that I did not visit - but the pieces coming out of that area did look good if that's your thing. It was a huge surprise to see the carving station with prime rib and filet mignon. I had the filet - moist, delicious and melt in your mouth goodness. I didn't have any rice or noodle dishes or deep fried meat stir fry plates - but they did all look pretty tasty and judging by what I did have, I would imagine they are. I'm glad we found this spot and I will be back. It's delicious, Americanized Chinese/Asian fare that anyone who enjoys that kind of thing, coupled with excessive overeating is sure to enjoy. If you're looking for quality, great tasting Chinese food. This is not your place. This is my absolute favorite Chinese food place... Let me start by highlighting their General Tsao's Chicken, and their Fried Rice... Both are just amazing, and together, it like Chinese food heaven!! Their sushi is just ok, but I don't fault them for that.. If you want sushi, it's always best to get it from a sushi restaurant. Nim Chow is yummy too! Service is pretty on point. The waitstaff is always very courteous. Even when we go in a large group, they kindly accommodate us. The grossest, most disgusting food ever! Over saturated, greasy, over cooked, and tasteless. Don't eat here unless you want a plate of greasy food that will most definitely raise your cholesterol levels. I was astounded by the heaping plates I saw people bringing back to their tables. I found out about this place because my brother always finds some good spots on yelp. The food is really good, great quality, great sushi and very clean. The wait staff is always checking our tables to clear but honestly it's really annoying when they literally check every 5 min I feel like I am rushed and can't enjoy my dinner. The food is good depending on what time you go. They don't seem to happy when you bring baby's or younger children in. The food is warm but not Hot no difference in dinner or lunch food wise unless it's Sunday 1499 is crazy for the choices they have. Mint muse is amazing. Don't recommend eating the dumplings they were really hard and old. Beef teriyaki was amazing salad bar is great not many dressings to chose from but it is a Chinese restaurant. Hot tea was really good and white rice was kind of burnt but from what I was told ppl like it like that so just a be wear thing. ‍ a lot of fish options and nachos are to die for. My husband loves the chow main but said it doesn't have celery. Always have pizza ,chicken nuggets , Mac and cheese, and ice cream for the kids which I actually think is great if you have picky eaters. I would highly recommend going for lunch and stay away for dinner to expensive. Btw they have cameras all over the place at almost every table. Just like the other reviews I agree it's the best in the state for a Chinese buffet. It's literally a five minute walk from me and I have been countless times. The food has always been good. I always go for lunch or a quick take out (which is mega cheap by the way if you get the right items). Overall really good food, the soft serve isn't icy like other places and the food is overall good. This is also the only buffet I've eaten sushi at and didn't get sick after, so that speaks volumes to me. read more

Good Chinese buffet. Clean. Vegetarian-friendly, including vegetarian sushi. They replenish the buffet items, including sushi, promptly. One staff member, who is always holding a wireless microphone, continually monitors the buffet. When a buffet item gets low, she informs the kitchen using the wireless microphone. Very good buffet. I'm not usually a fan of Chinese Buffet but my husband wanted to give it a try. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The food was very good, hot, fresh and a great variety.
