My coworker and I went here to get a quick lunch/snack. I decided to sample the spring roll and egg roll. The interior of the restaurant was clean and the food was ready in about 10 minutes. Both the egg roll and spring roll were tasty but I definitely have a strong preference for the spring roll. The egg roll for me was a little crunchier than I prefer but the spring roll was exactly how I prefer texture wise. It was $3.90 for both which I think is a pretty fair price. They also had quite a few lunch specials for less than $10. I'll likely come back but I'm definitely getting 2 Spring rolls next time. read more

I have never had a bad experience until tonight. I was told to bring my food back for a refund. I live to far to travel back. They deliver and should have offered to deliver me a new order. Service - fast and courteous. They had very busy traffic in and out and lots of phone calls for orders. So my first impression was - wow, what a busy restaurant. The food should be very good. I ordered their all day special which I chose shrimp roll and 2 chicken wings to go with the shrimp egg foo young. It was very good! For the price I thought it was worth it. I loved that I did not have to get rice with it. I'm not a rice fan so that made me happy. The wings were a good size and cooked to perfection. I ordered hot and sour soup and wonton soup - both large. There were a lot of wontons in the soup which made the soup very filling! We are interested in trying other dishes. If you have seen my reviews on Chinese restaurants, you know I love me some General Tso's chicken! I judge most of these restaurants based on either this or the sweet & sour chicken, but I feel if you are Chinese takeout spot, General Tso's should be up to par. So one day a co-worker wanted to order from Hong Kong House because she had it before and felt it was better than our typical delivery spot. So I gave it a try. The General Tso's chicken WAS ALL THAT AND THEN SOME! Ohh, I was about to call our go to spot and fire them. The chicken had the right amount of spice, and the rice was very good. I just had to have this again! ONE WEEK LATER It was storming outside and nobody felt like leaving the office. Hong Kong House was on my mind. I ordered myself and received what was the 2nd nastiest GTC I've had in my life! The rice was still good, but the chicken was very grisly and just tasted so bad, I had to make sure I ordered from the same restaurant. I almost called our normal spot to apologize for cheating on them. FOUR MONTHS LATER Apparently my coworkers still love this place and invited me to give it one more chance. Help me to understand how this chicken went from the "King of GTC" to "Was That Chicken" to "Okay Chicken"? Again, the rice was on point, but the chicken was having Identity issues. Easily one of my favorite Chinese takeout places in Hampton roads. We ordered general tso chicken, beef broccoli, house lo mein, and crab rangoon. This is one of those interesting sort of places that at first glance your not sure if you should go in or not...but we did! Yelp told us to, and since we have learned to trust yelp implicitly, we couldn't be but so afraid of the place! Although the decor was a mish-mash, and the order up window looked very jail like in style and appearance...we're adventurous enough, and decided we wouldn't judge a book by its cover or was this their cover?! Ok bad joke, let's move on! The workers/owners were friendly, and served up flavorful egg drop soup...much thicker then the kind I am use to but actually really good (and nice to have something a little off the beaten path that I am accustomed to). Does size matter?! Well, we seemed to think so! The chicken teriyaki sticks were the biggest I have ever come in contact with, and very good! I hate to end with a "meh" but to be true to myself and the honesty of this review, I have to mention the chicken Lo mein...which just had an odd taste. It was almost as if the noodles themselves tasted stale if that makes any sense. It threw off any other flavor, and ruined the dish as a whole. Other then that, our eat in visit was nice enough. The food was pretty good overall, the workers friendly, and the cleanliness was on par. All appreciated. Tried this place for the first time after my go-to "jade garden" temporarily closed for renovations, I've heard about this place before but wasn't feeling daring enough to venture out. The location is small, it has a small dining room area but it gives off more of a takeout only feel (for me at least) we ordered 4 meals, 2 were their $6.25 specials and 2 were regular dinner entrees m: shrimp foo young, sweet & sour chicken, chicken chow mein & Yatka mein, the place smelled great but I didn't get ahead of myself as smells can be deceiving...we got home and cautiously tasted our meals, The food was great! Flavorful, freshly made, and hot. You can taste the freshness, nothing had that frozen, stale, blah, sitting under a heat lamp feel that a lot of local Chinese places are known for, overall we were all quite please, this is officially my new Chinese takeout spot. read more

Hong Kong in the House!!! Well my house anyway. Got a love having delicious food brought to your door. I was looking for a place I hadn't tried before.... Yelpers seemed to recommend this place, and who am I to argue with strangers who may or may not know what they are talking about? ;) In this case, most of them did. The guy on the phone was friendly and helpful. The food arrived hot and fresh. I judge a place by their Hot and Sour soup. In this case, the verdict was..... YUMMY! So many places do it wrong.... Either not hot, not sour or too sour, and on one occasion, I'm pretty sure one restaurant's recipe consisted of dirty dish water and cat litter. Anyway, the soup was just right, and they make the fried wonton noodle thingymajiggers. Not the lame ones from a bag. General Tsao's was good. More of a thick sauce, but it's better than watery. I could actually taste the garlic and ginger. Sweet and sour pork was good.... Actually tasted like real pork. Wow. Kung Pau chicken was flavorful. The chicken was in large pieces instead of tiny ones. I will say that the Crab Rangoon was a little.... Different. It had a sweet flavor on the pastry part. BUT I think this would have been awesome with some lime Ponzu sauce to dip. Normally I have some, but I was out. This is a great, cheap Chinese joint, and I think it will replace my other one I've been going. Food portions are generous for the price, tasty and the service is polite. read more

I've even going to Hong Kong house for a few years now, and I've never been disappointed! When I first started eating at Hong Kong house, it was actually at the one down holland road. I moved, and my boyfriend and I discovered this Hong Kong house (3 mins from our place). At first we were skeptical, because we thought it was not going to be as good as the one down holland! Luckily, it's just as delicious. My advice would be to order the all-day special! You will definitely get the most bang for your buck. They have options for your to choose from (1 entree and 2 sides). I usually get the beef with green beans, chicken wings, and fried rice. Also, get the egg drop soup! It is seriously my most fave egg drop soup out of all the Chinese take-outs in the area. The only difference between this HKH and the one down holland is that I'm not sure if they give you fried wonton with dipping sauces. We actually haven't eaten inside... We've always gotten in to go. I am shocked! We cautiously ordered from Hong Kong House about 2 months ago and its was surprisingly better than other restaurants around us. Then tonight we tried it again. My husband and I have claimed this place as our "go to" for Chinese food. They have really good prices for good food. Our favorites are Sesame Seed Chicken, Chicken Lo Mein, Eggs Rolls, and of course Egg Drop Soup! I have had their Chicken and Broccoli but both times I've got it, it was over cooked and very hard to chew. Their General Tso's is decent but I sometimes get chicken that doesn't taste the best. The sauce is sometimes a gelatin consistency instead of yummy sauce. They do deliver and its a $10 minimum. The little flaws I named are minor because most all of the dishes are delicious! Actually, for the most part the flavor of everything was good even though the orange and gen t's weren't really different from each other. I wasn't expecting much as Chinese delivery food is pretty much similar from place to place. But let me tell you... I was pleasantly surprised. Their sweet and sour pork is pretty amazing.
