At last I found decent Chinese food in Midcoast Maine. Hong Kong Island has delicious boneless spareribs, admirable lo mein, and hardy main dishes. Now if they only added Tsingtao beer, we'd be set. Cheerful service and ample seating round out its charms. Prices and portion sizes make this restaurant one of the best values in the area. Their wonton soup had a fabulous broth and the hot and sour is very rich. The bottles of duck sauce on the tables and availability of Chinese mustard allow you to add sweet or heat to any dish. Excellent food and service. The food was reasonable, fresh, big portions and so so good! The only thing I wouldn't order again are the scallion pancakes because they were hard throughout and not crispy on the outside and soft in the inside as they should be. Maybe it's because I'm a New Yorker, but this food was not the best, but before we get to the food lets start with the woman behind the counter for that acted like we Didn't order $100 worth of food and we didn't deserve extra condiments. She also didn't bag our drinks and fried noodles. lo mein - was flavorless, and since we didn't and extra sauce there was no helping it. Sweet and sour chicken - was decent. Chicken wings - ‍ I wasn't breaded, I'm not sure how they were prepared, all I can say it it was interesting. Crab Rangoon - I filled up on them because it was the best of the worse. Food ok. I'm from Boston were the Chinese food is amazing. The biggest complaint is either someone from the kitchen or the waitstaff are smoking indoors and every so often you get a wiff of the cigarette smoke and it makes you food taste like an ashtray. Its hard to avoid. You'll be eating and everything is fine, then the smell of smoke gets you and your next bite taste horrid. Than the smoke disappears and the next bite is fine. Staff was amazing. The Japanese sizzling chicken was amazing! The smoky flavor that saturated every bite of the delicately prepared morsels of poultry make dinner more of an experience than a quick dinner. Appalling. Seriously, I will never eat Chinese food again. Went here for takeout with a friend. Really didn't have anything in mind before we walked in, but once I looked around, I knew anything with meat was out of the question. My friend, on the other hand, was much more adventurous. I ordered chicken & broccoli and some steamed dumplings. First of all, the chicken and broccoli does not come with rice. This was perplexing, as I had ordered this as my meal. Anyway, another charge for rice, at a Chinese restaurant.... Go figure. I should have simply ordered the rice and skipped the rest. The broccoli was cooked to a slimy perfection, which swam in a watery grave of salt and cornstarch. (Getting hungry yet?). The vegetable dumplings, we're so awful, let's just say in couldn't make it through one. My friend had the beef lo mein. Okay, this is where things go from Asian to Italian, which in my book, is NEVER a good thing. The "lo mein" was spaghetti. Actually Ronzoni or more likely Hannaford brand dried spaghetti. The beef was chewy and you could literally hear the record-scratch in his head after a few well intentioned chomps. The look on his face was pure horror. I smiled, not because I thought to myself "I told you so", but because he eats ANYTHING, and HE couldn't do this. Seriously, the man is one gene away from a goat, and just slammed the brakes on eating another bite. Additionally he went the extra dark, scary mile and ordered beef (gotta love this guy) fried rice, which made it one forkful as well before the same look of horror filled his face and, ultimately, the room. All in all we ended up eating frozen pizza which we didn't completely bake because we were so hungry. That was gourmet compared to the entire meal we just threw out. No one got sick, which seems like some sort of miracle in itself, but the thought of eating Chinese food again does make me sick and that should say it all. Hong Kong Island should really be renamed The Hong Kong Island of Dr. Moreau, for its strange and scary fare. read more

I'm a vegetarian so sometimes finding good choices is tough and usually menu items are an afterthought but not here; the Scallion Pancakes and Kung Pow Tofu were both fantastic. Veggies and tofu were perfectly cooked, crisp and fresh and the sauce was excellent. I would absolutely come back and try others and the staff are very friendly and attentive. Very impressed with this place. The story on how we decided to come here is... Once Upon A Time , there was a Hong Kong Island on Pleasant St., in Brunswick, Maine. It was mine and my husband's first date and it was very memorable... Well, we're on a mini weekend vacation and just checked into our room, at Lord Camden (another nice place) and wanted to find a place to get a bite. My husband mentioned Chinese food and he found a place called Hong Kong Island (awesome and how fitting!) and I said, lets go!! Oh my!! Very happy we checked this place out!! The place was amazing. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. We ordered way too much, but everything tasted sooo good and cooked perfectly! Nothing was soggy or greasy or burnt. We really enjoyed this place and have decided its definitely worthy of a family road trip, being almost 2 hours away from our home!! I asked our waitress if we could take one of their paper placemats home as a sovereign with us and she was more than happy to and gave me a new one. Really worth stopping here, if you're in the mood for really good Chinese food. We will definitely be back!! Almost forgot... We had there General tso chicken is was nice and spicy but not wayyy too spicey. We tried the garlic chicken that was yummy. We had egg rolls I heard those were good. We had chicken fingers, pork fried rice, vegetable lo mein, they also ordered crab Rangoon which they said wasn't overly sweet it was just right. Beef spare ribs. The prices were reasonable for everything we got. Hands down the Chinese place to go if your in the area. Very friendly staff working there and the price was reasonable. We opted to take the food out. It was a hot day and the place did not offer much air conditioning. We ordered the chicken and brocoli, beef fried rice, stir fried mixed vegetables, beef with snow peas and shrimp Lo mein. Everything was hot and fresh but in terms of the taste, it was definitely not the best but decent. We were just so happy to find a Chinese restaurant at a Caucasian dominated town. Stumbled upon this restaurant purely by accident. It was very close to our vacation rental and it was getting late and we were hungry. We ordered the house special fried rice and two egg rolls just because we figured that it was pretty simple and if we didn't like it we weren't out a huge amount. Well we were very pleasantly surprised. Food was delicious, very fresh including shrimp. Egg rolls are jumbo and equally delicious. We've been back here two more times this week and each time food is always spot on. Best crab rangoons we've ever had and yes I know it's imitation crab. We ordered on the app, and waited for 40 minutes for the app to tell us our food was ready. I decided to go in and see if it was ready, and the person at the counter was shocked there was an order they missed. I heard yelling in the kitchen and then a lady came out and politely told me my food would be ready in five minutes. I think it was obvious to us both that they had missed our order. But hey, it happens. When we got the food 15 minutes later, then we drove home eating wontons and egg rolls which were fine. At home, we discovered the general gau's was just the meat and no broccoli, the chow mein was chop suey (I checked the receipt, and it was ordered correctly). It wasn't terrible, it wasn't good, and I'm sure they were rushed, but to be honest, I'm writing this because I'd rather they had been honest with me, told me they didn't have what they needed to make what we ordered and given us a refund... I don't even want to cause trouble, so I will only leave this up for a little while, I'd just like the people who dealt with me, to consider being on the level next time. I'm writing this really only to let them know... It's a hard business, I do wish them well, they have a nice main dinning room and I hope they can reopen that up again soon. But eating fried food with no veggies or veggies without noodles, because we were being pushed out the door sucked. Especially when we spent about $60. So that was really a waste of money. Beware - after I placed a large take out order here and paid with my card, then a few hours later, someone tried to use my card number fraudulently. Why do I blame the restaurant? Because I didn't use my card anywhere else the whole week I was in Rockland. I'd give zero stars if I could. My bank had to cancel my card while I was on vacation and I have incurred a late fee because another payment didn't get made. I won't be returning and I would recommend avoiding this place. read more
