This has such a cute walkway to get inside, I love the decor! Inside you have a beautiful view of the Kennebec River, there are plants and art everywhere. It doesn't feel like a "Chinese restaurant". This was the most atrocious food I have ever eaten. We had a few bites of the orange and sesame chicken and put down our forks. It was some grizzly intestinal appearing battered fried slop in a gummy dark brown molasses appearing sauce that gave me instant diarrhea once I left the place. The chicken Fingers were uncooked with their interior filled with uncooked batter that tasted like some chemical used for motor cars. I asked the server if this was in fact chicken or some other type of animal meat. The interior of the restaurant is slanted and appears as if it's about to collapse into the river. I am a big fan of Lucky Garden. I'm from MA and we have many amazing Chinese places back home. LG is one of the only places around the area that is worth the trip. The people working there are just lovely. I usually get h&s soup, twice cooked pork and a nice crispy egg roll. Their dumplings are very good and cooked properly when asked for them pan fried. A "pan Fried" dumpling is only fried on one side, not deep fried. I've had the buffet a few times and it's also been very good. Although the buffet is a price performer and the food is well prepared I prefer to order off the menu as son many patrons are handling the serving area. Suggestion to provide staff to serve. This would also cut down on waste. So many plates are mounded with way too much food that is simply wasted. Giving 4 stars for the excellent food but the buffet needs attention. read more

I wish I liked this place, but sadly I was very disappointed. I had high Hopes based on the glowing reviews but maybe it's the buffet that's good? Got take out twice. First time was okay. Second time was awful. Pros: Staff is very friend. Lo Mein & Fried rice is good. But it ends there! Hubby had beef & broccoli. You can tell by the photo how poor quality the meat is. I find their crab Rangoon's to sweet. I also got schezuan tofu. Flavor is good, but I REALLY wished they fried the tofu. It came as a soggy mess. :-( super bummed read more

Decent Chinese food and service was good. They have a lunch buffet that lots of people seemed to enjoy. I ordered eggplant and garlic sauce along with egg fu yung. Not a fan of the flavor of the food, we went there last night and spent around $100 for food and the food tasted questionable ,,, I also had to apply my own seasonings and sauces to make it taste right,,. My boyfriend eat some orange chicken last night which was the only thing I didn't try. Well two hours after eating the orange chicken my boyfriend got aggressively sick with vomiting and diarrhea... it got to the point where he slept on the couch with a bucket and even had to call out of work,,, which isn't like him at all! He will not call out unless it's 100% unavoidable.... We have eaten there before without getting sick so I do think it was a simple mistake, I believe it is probably one of the better options for Chinese food here, as in my opinion they all really suck! read more

Stopped in for take out while on a visit from out of town. I had a very simple order. Spring Roll with Hot and Sour soup. When I got back to my hotel room I discovered I did not have spring roll, but had fried egg roll. Opened the soup and tasted it. There was nothing hot or sour about it. I ordered through Door Dash very early in the evening, and the food was prepared and delivered promptly. I had Hot and Sour Soup. It was spicy and sweet without much other flavor. It also was not hot, and it took only about 5 minutes to get from the restaurant to my house. I ordered fried vegetable dumplings. Once again, the food was not that flavorful. The dumplings were fried on one side, and the other side seemed barely steamed, and the vegetables inside were not cooked, just barely heated. I also had Moo Shu vegetable. It was very oily, not flavorful, and barely cooked. Also, there were some hard and sharp pieces of something in the Moo Shu. Once I noticed that, I did not eat the rest of it. Afterwards, the food left a strange, unpleasant aftertaste. I had heard good things about this restaurant, but I was disappointed and will likely not order from them again. read more

I truly don't understand how people like this place. I heard their all you can eat buffet was delicious so I decided to give it a try. The buffet is $16.99. With a soda or tea that goes up to roughly $20, yikes. The buffet was disgusting. There were 11 options on the buffet: a few chicken dishes, some horribly disgusting egg rolls, some nasty rice and some "fried bread." It was extremely tiny for such a large price. The chicken dishes were your classics like teriyaki, lemon pepper, general Tao. They were decent but cold. Most of the dishes like the egg rolls and rice had a mystery meat in them that appeared to be imitation crab. They were disgusting. The rice also had the mystery meat, also disgusting. They were also cold. My husband ordered a side of, "spicy wontons." They were horrible. They came out cold with a mystery meat in them. When I asked the waitress what the meat was she said, "uh.. it's a sausage type mixture." She had no clue. Do not get the buffet here. It's cold, limited and nasty. Maybe if you order specific dishes they will be better. The workers were friendly. But it appeared an entire family lived and or worked at this restaurant. There were numerous small children running around, yelling. The place itself looks seedy. You park on the side, walk to the back of the building, and then down a long narrow, dimly lit hallway. We go here from time to time and have not been disappointed. This past Friday we started with Shrimp Spring Rolls. There were whole shrimp and very fresh veggies inside. For dinner we had Cashew Shrimp and it was the best I have had. The vegetables were so fresh that they must have been newly picked. There were a good number of large fresh shrimp, the cashews were al dente and the ginger was delicious without being overpowering. We also had Sweet & Sour Chicken. The chicken was tender, the batter crispy, and the sauce a perfect balance. The waitress was wonderful and continued to impress the next day when I opened the leftovers and found packages of fresh sauce with more fruit. This review is from the heart. This review I thought about all night to make sure I truly frame how terrible and overpriced the food was. It was possibly the worst chinese food I've had to date. Lucky Garden has been a go to place in Hallowell for a long time. Big place for take out and their buffet, which is very popular for all the fried food coated in glop that so many like. We looked to try two dishes last night. Beef and Broccoli and then the 3 Delights soup. We did ask for the sauce on the side for the beef and broccoli, which trluy exposed what the place really does with their food. I'll begin by saying that both entrees were small for the price they charge, with lots of frozen vegetables compared to meat (or what they call meat.) The soup was thoughtless. Canned soup broth with maybe 3 small frozen shrimp, a few pieces of what they call chicken and beef (maybe 2 pieces each), a handful of the frozen carrot slices shaoed like lightening bolts (you know the pre-shaped stuff I mean) and two slices of cabbage. Those were the delights. I'll come back to explain the meat later. The beef and broccoli really exposes what they are doing with your food. The chicken and other meat in the soup go through a process that chinese restaurants use, called velvetizing. This is where they add some baking soda and corn starch to the raw meat before cooking to change the texture and tenderize the meat. You've probably noticed in the past that chinese food meat has a slightly different texture in this regard. It's actually not a bad thing when done reasonably. I do it when cooking stir fry at home. However, whatever they do to their meat is sooo overdone that the chicken doesn't even look or taste like meat. It is sooo overprocessed that the meat has the texture of like, jellyfish or something. Actually gross and this is usually hidden when they dump their sauces over everything. Very evident and off-putting in the soup, and when you get an entree with sauce on the side. And BTW, the sauce is terribly sweet for being a brown oyster sauce (supposedly). The other thing that made the beef and broccoli very bad is you realize they are not stir frying it. It is all frozen food that is either steamed, boiled or maybe microwaved? Then usually covered in slop gravy. But in this preparation you truly notice that neither the beef nor the broccoli ever came near a wok. No evidence of stir frying at all, just steamed or boiled food. Probably very similar to buying PF Chang's frozen chinese food in the supermarket, microwaving it and dumping the sauce on top. The egg rolls were the best part of the meal. They are certainly not making their own egg rolls, but are are pretty handy with a deep fryer. So there you go, my review on the Lucky Garden. The restaurant that looks like it's about to fall in to the Kennebec River for the past 20 years. I think people still file in there to get their cheap, small buffet. They can have at it, but I'm done with that place. Disgusting. But this is often the price you pay for trying to get good food in central maine and not driving to Portland. read more

It's strange but when I walk into a Chinese restaurant I know just by the smell that the food is going to be tasty, and this place did that for me. We were greeted and got a table right away. They brought us a menu, which had so many items but my husband and I decided to try the buffet, it was small but plentiful. The egg rolls had lots of meat and veggies, the sweet and sour sauce was very good along with the ginger sauce for the potstickers. The potstickers were large and had a nice portion of meat and the dough was thick, which I loved. The crab Rangoon was so good too; the filling was delicious and the wonton wrapper was so light and crisp. The sesame chicken and the lemon chicken had good flavor but was a little thick with the sauce, to our liking anyway. The waitress was very friendly despite being the only one I seen taking orders and cleaning tables during a fairly busy lunch hour. I was visiting from out of town and we decided to stop here due to the good reviews. I decided to get the chicken fried rice and boy was that a mistake. The chicken was not chicken. It was slimy and way too soft. It had no taste. It appeared that this was the remnant of what once was a chicken, but was boiled beyond recognition. The suggestion that this was chicken was the only thing that made it even identifiable. They then threw in some onions so that way you had something to taste. I recently moved to the Boston area, and I was warned that Chinese down here sucks the bag. I crossed my fingers and toes hoping the rumors were false... and I cried salty, salty tears once trial and error dashed all my hopes into a billion pieces. I've eaten at a trillion chinah dinahs in Maine... Oriental Jade, Great Wall, and many others-- but Lucky Garden is THE best, without question. Want a crab rangoon as sweet and as crisp as a fried angel's wing? How about fried rice that is fresh, fluffy, and actually has VEGGIES in it? *gasp* I recommend you give "Lucky G's" a visit. Not sure what was going on here after reading some of the five star reviews. Was glad to have a Chinese place so close after just moving to Hallowell. In total we ordered crab rangoon, sesame chicken, lemon chicken, coconut chicken, and egg drop soup. The soup was better than most places, broth had flavor and wasn't too salty. My sesame chicken was fairly good. Sauce was again flavorful with a good bite of ginger and the chicken meat used seemed to be chunks of thigh meat mostly. The lemon and coconut chicken both had good sauces, you can actually taste what it's supposed to be instead of just the same sauces used in everything. However, this was almost a two star because the meat used seemed like rolled paper thin chicken breast which turned out to be more breading than meat. Will try this place again to see if it was a fluke. read more

Friendly service and excellent food - The Seafood Flower Basket is very good (not sure if it was served in some kind of wonton or tortilla shell, but whatever it was, it was tasty!) But the real star is the Honey Chicken - some might think the thinly-sliced chicken pieces have too much breading and not enough meat, but I loved the addictive crispy crunchy texture.
