I ordered delivery last night and was a bit hesitant based on reviews. But we were pleasantly surprised. What we ordered (and my rating is next to it) 1. Egg Rolls - These egg rolls were pretty fat and fried nicely; however, they won't be ordered again bc the stuff inside was just basically cabbage, and no other flavors were found. 2. Scallion pancakes - pretty good, yet again, the flavor was missing here; I couldn't even see any scallions! 3. Boneless Spareribs - pretty tasty; hubs said they were right up there with some of the best. I am not a huge fan anyways, so we will go with his rating! 4. Dumplings - Fried, these were really tasty! and paired well with the dipping sauce. Winner! 5. House Special Lo Mein - very, very good. Not too saucy, but enough and the noodles weren't overcooked! 6. Sesame Chicken - Kiddo loved this one. I tried one, and yep, I will get it again! 7. Kung Pao Shrimp - this was my favorite of the evening. The shrimp was juicy and plump and pretty large pieces too. The sauce is cravable! 8. Seafood Delight - I was impressed by the large pieces of seafood, and the sauce was garlicky and light and just enough. The veg was steamed perfectly, still with a bit of bite, and not overcooked! 9. Hot and Spicy Beef - how do they get the meat so frickin' tender! This did have a good kick; as advertised, it wasn't so much that you couldn't eat more. Of the nine dishes, Kung Pao Shrimp was the obvious winner. But 7/9 will be ordered again. Delivery was very smooth and fast! No hidden charges when ordering online, like another place I tried a few weeks ago. And plenty of leftovers to munch on later. Oh, one more ding, minor because I had some on hand, but they didn't send the lil cups of Chinese hot mustard? Oversight maybe? We will be ordering again! If you want fresh - do not eat here! I spent over $60 bucks here and I am a local. The rice made us both sick with stomach pains, it was almost black in color. Whatever they fry the food in has definitely not been cleaned for years. Our scallion pancakes tasted like a grease pancake, no flavor and the "ginger sauce" was soy sauce and water - yuck! Everything was greasy and flavorless other than the crab rangoon which was decent. I would not recommend this place, there are WAY better places on the north shore. For the over prices they charge, they should be ashamed feeding this to people! Sad because I am 2 minutes walking distance and they will never receive my business again, nor my friends. read more

I placed an online delivery order last night: - the online order process was simple and easy - I live on the outskirts of Salem, and the order arrived in 30 minutes despite them being busy with Halloween visitors (OK, I'm guessing at how busy they were) - the order was correct, and the food was delicious - I didn't have to drive downtown to pick it up. They used to be a great option before I moved. I just moved back and went and it's not the same. the special plate used to be full of rice, now they only give you some rice. The crab rangoons used to be so full, with great crab; is they're sad and pathetic. Even the poor chicken fingers lost about a pound a piece. Long time customer. Always order the same special meal. Tonight it came with a strong taste of something chemical or pharmaceutical. Felt sick after 2 bites. Chemical in food burned my lips. Called HKK many times. No one speaks english. Didn't care about public health, just wanted to bicker over a refund I hadn't even asked for. After milk and charcoal the nausea is going away. It really disappoints me to have to write this review because up until today, this was my go to place to get Chinese take out! Last weekend I ordered some take out and paid over the phone with my credit card (which I normally do). I am not sure who changed the tip amount, but when I went to verify the charge on my account I noticed they added almost $10 more for my order (which is much more than the $2.00 tip I signed for). I tried calling the restaurant and was put on hold for over 10 minutes! Now I am going to have to go in person to dispute the charge. The food is usually very good and the portions are big, but if (and that is a very BIG IF) I ever order again I would either pay cash or pick it up myself. Your average American chinese. Yes it's greasy and salty but I'm guessing that's what most people are looking for with this place. I love the hot and sour soup and their spare ribs. The combo dinner D5 is my go to. Comes with pork fried rice, beef teriyaki, chicken wings and ribs. The delivery time is amazing. My husband is enroute to Hong Kong King to demand a refund as I write this review. We expected a good experience from the many positive comments, however, we were given unspeakably terrible food this evening. So terrible, we question if it was even made today. Among the offenses; cold, stale rice, mutated chicken wings and 100% fatty boneless spare ribs. All of this complete with a putrid odor. Not the worst Chinese food in Salem, but close. The spring roll was really greasy. The egg foo yung was thick with big chunks of veggies, which would be okay if you like giant cubes of celery. I prefer more egg in my foo yung. The "gravy" that came with it was super thick and tasted strongly of soy sauce. The crab rangoon was atrocious. Prior to moving to Salem my girlfriend and I ate here, in August 2013, on a recommendation from a local at bar who told us it was the best Chinese joint in town. So we went and ate, and we both were quite disappointed. I don't remember what I had then, but I just remember thinking "this food is mediocre at best." Tonight, 1/25/14, after reading the reviews on Yelp and seeing many folks liking it and swearing by it, I thought I would give it another shot and order something that sounded interesting on the menu. I ordered D15.Cashew Chicken with pork fried rice. Now, let me begin by saying there wasn't a single cashew to found be in my meal! Instead of cashews I got huge cubes of celery (and I don't much care for celery). The chicken and the sauce weren't too bad, but there wasn't much of a kick to it. The food itself has a very "oily" smell to it; in fact, the oil smell overpowers all the other smells. The fried rice was disappointing: it looked and and smelled like it was fried in three day old grease with a very over powering oil taste to it. I ordered a spring on the side and it was simply put - awful. I couldn't tell you exactly in what oil it was fried in but it had a very unpleasant taste to it. This was particularly disappointing as I'm a big lover of spring rolls. The Wonton soup was at least a day old and tasted like it's be sitting on low heat for about twelve hours. Have you ever stopped at a gas station late a night and grabbed some coffee and it tasted burnt? Well, the wontons have a very similar taste to them. Not to forget to mention it was salty. In short, I don't recommend this Chinese place to anybody. Although, I am aware one cannot expect the same quality as "fancy" restaurants in the smaller take out joints - but this place just stinks. read more

We moved from Salem more than 6 months ago (after only living there for about 6 months) and we *still* talk about how much we miss HKK. The food is so tasty. We have been ordering from them for many years. Tonight was the worst we have ever had. My wife said her soup was more like dishwater. The rice was like eating salt from a spoon, or maybe it was the lobster sauce since we put it onto of the rice. How do you mess up an egg roll. They did it. This was the worst of the worst.
