For delivery Chinese food, I was pleasantly surprised when I first tried Hong Kong King! The veggies were fresh and delicious, which isn't always the case with take-out. The prices were really cheap and it literally took 7 minutes for the delivery guy to get to my place. It was weird, but wonderful. After reading everyone's reviews I decided to get delivery from here. They were really quick delivering the food. They forgot my soda but charged me for it. I got the sweet and sour chicken and it was good because I like that way they put the sauce on the side. I also got the lobster sauce and it was gross, not like normal lobster sauce. Way to watery and too many scallions. It came with beef teriyaki and those were under cooked. There almost red it the middle and really chewy. I should have told them to do them well-done. I'm actually putting them in the oven right now. The white rice is not original Chinese jasmine white rice, its like minute white rice that I can make. Not horrifying, and still decent value, but I get the feeling that they just don't try as hard as they used to. More indigestible bits in the chicken dishes. Much better than average. I got a "happy family" and I was very pleased. It's rare to find a place that knows how to cook shrimp properly. It was close to perfect. The Lo mein here is great as well, not the usual greasy stuff I see at some other local places. - 1 surprise though, Scallion pancakes here are awful! APRIL 8, 2014 Just ordered from Hong Kong King at 28 Norman St Salem. Delivery just arrived. Opened up the house rice and smelled badly of rancid fish(shrimp) Opened up the pork strips they are dry and dark meat with loads of fat, low mein is barely edible and the beef chow yoke is barely even marginal at best in tenderness and taste. They did however give us a free order of chicken in some type of sauce with no label or information other than free written on the container.. My 80 yr old mother tried the"free" chicken.... it was full of hot red chili pepper sauce.... she suffered for almost 10 minutes till the heat ebbed away...... I have to say that they flat out SUCK I will be spending the next few hours watching my elderly mom for signs of sickness. 37 dollars went directly into the trash bucket..... IT WAS DISGUSTING. As newer residents to Salem we've been trying out plenty of food spots in town, this one is just awful. The lomein was greasy and smelled of bad shrimp, the general gaos chicken was dry and poor flavored, the fried rice had definitely been reheated for our order and the chicken terriyaki was extremely dry. Everything seemed as if it was a day or two old and had just been recycled for our order. I would never reend this place to anyone, and will never go back. My girlfriend ended up with a stomach ache that lasted the following day as well. Don't waste your time here. read more

Hong Kong King have mixed reviews and are a straight up greasy spoon type of Chinese restaurant, but they made great Crab Rangoons and excellent tofu dishes. At least they DID. Tonight I ordered the same thing I usually order (Schezuan Tofu, which is triangles of fried tofu with mixed vegetables in a spicy brown sauce) and when I got home discovered that they gave me a completely different tofu dish- with some kind if chemically tasting pink sweet sauce and steamed broccoli. I reviewed the menu to try to figure out what they gave me instead of what I ordered and nothing sounds like it could be this pink crap. I'm wondering if the ownership has changed and so the recipes have changed. I'm going to throw out this food and eat grilled cheese for dinner tonight. So bummed. read more

I just moved into one of the buildings next door. This may be a problem because they have the best crab rangoon and beef teriyaki I have ever had! The crab rangoon has a ton of stuffing inside. It's not all crunchy dough like other places. The beef teriyaki is very tender and juicy. The rice is average but I think all rice is pretty average. The best part: It's cheap!!! The food has gone downhill a LOT in the last year or so. Mediocre at best to downright gross. Their Kung Pao used to be fresh and delicious, now...meh. General Tso's was crispy and the sauce light. Now it's goopy and sickeningly sweet. Also, they don't honor the coupons printed on their menus. "Purchase up to $30, get free General Tso's Chicken" would suggest a free entre with any purchase $30 and under but they claim it means $30 minimum purchase (not that I would want the current version of Tso anyway). Same thing with the 15% discount for "purchase up to $50". They claim it means $50 minimum before the discount kicks in. Nope, that's not how the language works folks. False advertising and bait & switch are illegal you know. No matter, I won't be back after the disgusting lo mein I received tonight. The noodles were mushy and tasted metallic. so i ordered from them on new years eve around 4:45 in the afternoon, expecting at least a 2 hour wait. After 3 hours i decided to call them to check the status of my order and was told that it would be another 30 minutes as the order was not ready yet. Ok i can accept that but after another hour of waiting i called them again and then they told me that they lost my order but i could reorder it and they would guarantee me 20 minute delivery. Now since my order was over 50 dollars and now 4 hours late it would have been customary to offer me a discount on my purchase as i have a hungry family waiting to eat for 4 hours and no food, but that was not even an offer by this place. We just ordered lunch for our office. When they told us the total we called back because according to the menu that we just got a month ago the cost had gone up over $6.00 for 2 lunches that's a lot! But the lady told us they had a price increase so OK the food has been good up to this point and we were hungry and their delivery is always no longer than 1/2 an hour. The food gets here and they sent us the dinner size portions which explains the extra cost but don't you think when we called questioning it she would have caught on L as in lunch not D as in dinner! The General Tso chicken is so hard and so dry it has obviously been in the fryer more than once and next to no sauce. My co-worker ordered L9 and got D9 she doesn't eat teriyaki or egg foo young which is why she ordered ribs chicken wings and crab Rangoon. HELLO we call back to say the food is wrong and bad and we ordered lunch and got dinner and all of a sudden she doesn't speak very good English and hangs up on us! We usually order for our entire company for Christmas but will be looking for some where that appreciates our business. read more
