While in the area, my party of four decided to drop by Hong Ning to have Filipino food for lunch. The restaurant is in a small strip plaza and the Filipino bakery next door is owned by the same family. We arrived on a Saturday just after noon and plenty of parking spaces were available in the parking lot. The restaurant was very spacious with Filipino decor throughout. Approximately half of the tables were occupied with diners and my party was seated right away. We were pretty hungry and ordered several items to share family style. Pork sinigang arrived first and had the distinct tamarind flavor I expected without overpowering the rest of the dish. Lechon kawali came next and the pork belly pieces were cut into perfect bite sized pieces full of flavor and crunch; the lechon tasted good with and without the liver gravy sauce. Crispy sisig arrived on a sizzling plate and was seasoned very well in the mixture of sauce and onions; I liked that the pieces of pork were mostly meat unlike other places which like to sneak in cubes of fat. Crispy pata kare kare was the next dish to arrive and at first glance the portion was huge; the portion was very generous with pork and vegetables and was very delicious. Lastly, we had BBQ pork and chicken skewers, each of which were marinated and grilled very well. To drink, I had the sago gulaman which was very refreshing and had the right amount of sweetness. Overall, I was very impressed with my lunch at Hong Ning. Aside from the generous portions, the dishes were not too oily or salty and it is rare to dine at a Filipino restaurant that prepares its food in way that doesn't feel like it is clogging up arteries. Along the wall in the back by the restroom is a collage of Filipino and Filipino American celebrities that dined at the restaurant, which surprised me for a restaurant in the suburbs. Came here on a random Friday night last night with no reservations and luckily there was lots of parking as it's located in a strip mall with shared parking. We were greeted quickly and warmly as soon as we came in. And the same lady who welcomed us in was also our server. Let me tell you she was absolutely incredible. She was personable, helpful, very welcoming and had a great sense of humor as well. She was constantly checking in on us, which is great, especially because this was our first time. You can tell from the pictures we ordered a little bit of food not too much and let me tell you everything actually turned out surprisingly delicious. I do find the Filipino food is a little bit of hit or miss, especially in the states. However, everything was delicious. In fact, we only had a little bit of leftovers and managed to clean the plates of everything else. This place is truly authentic. You can still tell that it's owned by a family, which I think is fantastic. The decor is incredible as well. But most importantly for me, which is not how photographic the places, but rather the quality and the taste of the food. One fun thing is that the café next-door is also owned by the family that owns this restaurant. And so you can order food and desserts from the next-door and they'll bring it over to you at the restaurant. I will do a separate review of the café as well. Another fun thing was that as we were on the way out from dinner, we noticed that they were setting up a traditional kamayan set up on a table nearby for a party of six. We had the privilege of meeting the owner and he helped tell us about their set up their pricing and also that quite frankly you can customize us any way that you like. I've only had take out from Hong Ning prior to dining in for the first time. I was happy with it then and had anticipated it would be just as good. Our group ordered lumpia, kare kare, bangus, palabok and lechon kawali. The kare kare came with in house bagoong and it was savory but not too shrimpy. As everyone knows, each Filipino cook has different ways of making their dishes. All was good and not disappointed in anything we ordered. Came for the lumpia, I will keep returning for the ube panna cotta! Wow, that was the highlight of our meal. The lumpia was crisp with a nice light wrapper, and I like that it is filled with pork and shrimp. It's a nice shareable appetizer for 2 to 4 people. The chicken adobo was good and served in a rich, thick sauce, the way I like it. But the chicken was cut in random pieces, and it was hard to get meat without pieces of bone in each bite. It pairs well with the garlic rice. The pancit sitanghon is delicious with plenty of crisp vegetables. Do not skip dessert. It was delicious. Price was not bad for 2 entrees, 2 sodas and appetizer, and dessert. They also sell bags of freshly baked pan de sal and jars of garlic sardine to go. Since moving to the 'burbs, this is our go to spot when craving Filipino food. Service can be slow at times, but for the price point and quality of food it's pretty good. Ambiance is casual and more recently I've noticed no issue accommodating large groups. Our go to dishes when we come by... calamari and sisig to start, BBQ skewers and chicken inasal are always solid options and an order of the pancit canton as well. Yeah I know seems random, but these are my favorites. They do have a lot of all the classic favorites from lumpia shanghai, crispy pata, kare kare, adobo, deep fried bangus (fish), etc. so likely something for everyone. For dessert, the ube panna cotta is very good. Of course could always go with the halo halo, but man that ube panna cotta... Anyways, that's all I got on this one. The service here was unbelievable. We were seated ahead of 2 other parties and waited 15 minutes and were never greeted by a waiter and was never served any water. People that arrived after us were being served and offered drinks. We continued to wait an additional 5 minutes just to see if they would attend to us, and the host in front was soaking in Tagalog telling them to serve the other people first - thinking we didn't understand. Tried this place for the first time. I had been craving some lumpia and since there's a limited amount of Filipino restaurants in the burbs near me, I figured I'd try it while out shopping in the area. My BF has never had that cuisine and he's picky so I took a chance! We both enjoyed it. He got the lunch special and let me try a bite of the garlic rice. We agreed that it could be more garlic-y but overall yummy. The pancit bihon was VERY tasty and came with a HUGE portion for the price. We both ate it and I still brought home about 2 servings worth I think. Food is great and tastes like someone's Nanay or Tatay made it with so much love! It was served promptly with the hallmark Filipino hospitality. We were a group of ten paying in 5 separate checks and they accommodated our request with no problem. The restaurant is clean and the tables comfortably seating smaller and bigger groups alike. The acoustics allows conversations to take place without people having to talk loudly. The owners Ernie and Malou were present to help and support their crew. I really enjoyed the Shanghai Lumpia--definitely order if you're considering. It was some of the best I've had. The Crispy Binagoongan was also lovely. It was the perfect balance between meat (crispy pork) and veggie (eggplant). I want to come back and try more dishes. The only thing I would improve about my experience was the ambience. This is only my second time going to this restaurant. I love the mixture of two cultures as they serve both Filipino and Chinese food. Our waitress, was very polite and took our order effectively. This place is somewhat lively, but somewhat peaceful. The only con about this place is that there is 90 minute time limit per table. Dishes that we frequently order include Pork Lumpia Shanghai (aka tiny Filipino egg rolls), Lechon Kawali, BBQ Skewers, Adobo, Pinakbet, Kare Kare, Crispy Sisig, Pancit Bihon, and Palabok. For dessert, it is usually the Halo Halo and Leche Flan. As an American-born Filipina, my faves are the Lumpia Shanghai, Adobo, and Palabok. I could eat those all day long! The service is fast and friendly. I don't think my mom has any patience for less than that! Needless to say, she is always a happy customer here. Filipinos are very family-oriented (and food-oriented LOL) which makes this Hong Ning a perfect place for a family luncheon. We are repeat customers at this Filipino restaurant. We normally order lechon, kare-kare, and/or chicken adobo. These are all good here. However this time we decided to have something different. Pusit (calamari in garlic butter sauce) was so tender and flavorful. Sinigang na Bangus (milk fish in tamarind base soup) packed a nice tangy and savory punch with lots of veggies. The entrees don't come with rice (extra cost). You cannot eat Filipino dishes without rice. I think the entrees should be served with at least a small bowl of rice... Then charge extra for more. We ordered quite a few dishes to share as you can see, 70-80% of the dish met the expectations with a very reasonable price in Chicago suburb considerably. Worth trying! I enjoy eating here when I'm lazy to cook Filipino dishes. So here are my favorite dishes so far are: For appetizer you must try their Shanghai pork eggrolls, it's hot and crispy that comes with a sweet and sour sauce. I also like their crispy Patas (Fried pork knuckle/joint a dish that you really need to get your hands dirty. Pork lechon kawali deep fried crispy pork belly serve with a sweet liver dipping sauce. For the main dishes: Sinigang pork soup, the pork belly is so soft and fatty. The vegetables are typical but I love the sour taste of the broth. Their combo adobo which is pork belly and chicken in a flavorful vinegar type sauce. I don't care much of the chicken by itself though. Also their assortment of noodles are all good to try. Keep in mind that all these dishes are meant for sharing, big portions of you're eating solo. I am just surprised that our dishes didn't come with white rice. We had to pay extra. A large bowl of white rice is good for two maybe three people depending how hungry you are. The dining area is very clean and inviting. They do a good job of keeping the single stall bathrooms. This place is popular and it does get busy during lunch and dinner rush hours. It is located around in a Filipino community. When it gets busy service is very slow. I do like that they leave a carafe of water at your table. Desserts are pretty good there as well too. If you have room I would recommend their halo-halo which is a sweet shaved ice dessert topped with so many coconut flavors, and Ube sweet taro ice cream, etc. Overall a tasty Filipino restaurant that I would recommend to coming back here again and again! read more

Could be one of the best Filipino restaurants ever. The food is amped-up versions of the stuff I grew up eating. Don't worry, it's still made traditionally with no "Americanization" dilution. It's just presented a little more classy than what you see in a home... and this is a good thing. As far as recommendations, every dish we had was awesome, so just look at the descriptions and ask questions and you're sure to get something delicious. They also offer boodle fights here, though with COVID, I'd be cautious about that. Both are just fried crispy pork that they used for crispy binagoongan. My Gripe is that, it didn't make it authentic for us. The sisig basically tastes like fried egg mixed with citrus flavored pork. Good Filipino restaurant! I always compare the food at Filipino restaurants to my moms cooking and Hong Ning comes pretty close. Their sinigang has a great balance of sourness and saltiness, and their chicken inasal is off the chain. The restaurant is not that big, but big enough to accomodate our party of 25 people! We took up like 75% of the restaurant. Very homely decorations with a wall of interesting pictures that make up the Philippines. Service was pretty good for serving a large group. We ordered Pinakbet (half green beans, barely had squash and other veggies and half was sliced boiled fatty pork!), Pork Sinigang (all we can taste was bland sour soup and how can you go wrong with Pork sinigang ), classic Karekare (the most tasteless karekare I've ever tried around Filipino restaurants in Chicagoland) and Palabok (this is the only dish we actually enjoyed).
