This is by far the least "sweet" cake we have had, which is actually the highest compliment older Asian folks can give to a dessert. Made with fresh and tasty ingredients, combined with creative and thoughtful design. Thank you for the wonderful taro birthday cake. Well worth the $50 in our opinion. It is true that the display has limited options compared with many other bakeries near the city. But I think what they do have is made with care. Definitely higher price than what you'd get near downtown, but then again there's not a lot of other options nearby and it's not meant to be a high traffic kind of store as it's ran by the family. read more

Wow, what a gem! We only found this simple location from the Yelp reviews. Otherwise everything in the strip mall plaza was closed. The milk tea and real mango smoothies were incredibly affordable and perfectly sweet. We came close to close so the pastry selection was sparse. The friendly lady behind the counter introduced us to the caramel pudding cake which was perfectly sweet as well. Will definitely come earlier to try more of the pastries next time! read more

Honestly I was disappointed when I walked first in.. as you can see from the picture the bakery was absolutely empty.. talking about bakery option and people. All they had was what was in the display. Not too much to choose from. I needed more than what they had so I asked to lady if they have more she said yes they can make it and it will take them 15 mins. I tried: honey lemon passion fruit tea. It was good and refreshing. Crepe cake slice of rainbow and passion fruits 3.5/5 not bad and not too sweet. 3.5 for the price. $ 8.99 per slice is a lot for a small slice. Passion fruit and strawberry cheesecake, strawberry shortcake I did not try them because I bought it as a present. I'm sure it tasted good. We were in the area and we are so glad we stopped by! This is near downtown Barrington, and it's a small bakery/cafe with two tables inside and seems to be family owned. When we came in they gave us free samples! We loved the red bean paste bun and bbq pork buns - perfect bread to filing ratio and the inside to both were delicious. We also got Melee rainbow cake which was also delicious and beautiful. I got a strawberry ice tea drink which had fresh strawberries in it. We thought the prices were great for what we got - were used to more expensive prices for Asian style bakeries especially in Chicago. It seems like a relatively new place, so they have a deal if you purchase $30 worth you will get a free dessert. We will definitely be back when we're in the area again. read more

From their fruit-based cream cakes to their mille crepe cakes, the meticulous attention to detail is evident in every pastry, and it's clear that the bakers here possess a true passion for their craft. Their customer service is excellent with a parking lot next to the Metra. ***Ask for the frequency card for them to write down what you bought for gifts later. (Same as a punch card from subway) Only drawback was just two tables for customers to enjoy the tasty cakes and buns. Mainly a carry out bakery for drinks, cakes, and buns. The smoothies are made from actual fruit blended together which tastes fresh with real fruit flavor! The cakes are freshly made moist, not sweet at all! ***Make sure to pre order and call ahead a couple days to order their specialty cakes that come in 6", 8", and 10". The buns are so good they run out quickly in the afternoon. I would preorder the buns too. Their BBQ Pork, custard, bean paste, and cheese hot dog buns are fantastic! A little gem in downtown Barrington. I grew up on Chinese pastries so when I found this place I was immediately brought back to memories of my childhood. Everything was super fresh. The crepe cakes were fantastic. Even my husband who is not super familiar with Asian pastries enjoyed the crepe cakes and coffees. It's a super small business been open for 50 days. We had a strawberry coconut sago and chocolate cake roll with nuts. We had to wait 15 minutes even though we were the only customers. Both were good but lack the wow effect. There are only two tables so the place is mostly for carry-out. The place is tucked in a mall that can easily miss and it's not heavily advertised. There were curtains covering the inside which we find it odd like they were trying to hide something. While we were there, someone was trying to order a soda and the refrigerator was unplugged from the night before to save on electricity. We wish them the best. read more

He did not seem happy to be there, and he had no patience for my indecisive kids in what they wanted. It put a bad taste in my mouth, and I contemplated leaving without making a purchase. I usually order from this place but today I received my order and there was a bug on the top of my cake. The cakes are always sealed when I get them, so I don't know how it got in there and the only reason I noticed was because of the white whipped topping. Hard to believe the positive reviews this place has received. To me, it was disappointing to walk into a place called "Hong Kong Bakery" and see only 3 or 4 selections of "Hong Kong" bakery pastries and then only to have about 6 of each available for purchase. The buns were a decent size but the egg custard tarts were miniature size. And the prices for the few Chinese items they offer are high compared to other Chinese bakeries in Chicago and Naperville. They do have western style pasties and cakes but even with those, the selection and quantities were very limited. They also sell coffee and other related drinks so maybe they will rely on those items for their business. For Chinese bakery items, go elsewhere for a better selection and better prices. They really should drop the "Hong Kong" part from their name. read more

Very " Hong Kong" style bakery, cakes are light, not heavy and overly sweet like most US bakeries. Their cakes are delicious as well as their pineapple buns and egg custard tarts. There aren't many Asian bakeries in the suburbs. I went to the cafe for the egg tart and the BBQ pork bun. This is more of a take-out place. There are two square tables in the cafe. The online menu is very extensive and shows many items as being sold out because they currently lack the bandwidth to produce everything. read more

We ordered a mango mousse cake for our son's birthday and it was a hit! Not too sweet and so full of mango flavor. Also tried their small cakes, earl grey, strawberry and chocolate small cakes that were all so yummy!
