Bay View strikes an impressive balance between the two. The ball-tracking technology is excellent, the bays are well maintained, and whether you're dialing in wedges, working on dispersion, or just enjoying a casual round with friends, everything works exactly as it should. I've been to Topgolf locations across the mainland, and honestly, Bay View gives them real competition. In some ways, I'd argue it's even better. Instead of staring at parking lots or city skylines, you're hitting balls surrounded by lush tropical scenery with Hawaiian trade winds and mountain views. It's an experience you simply can't recreate on the mainland. The food, drinks, and service all complemented the atmosphere, making it easy to spend several hours here without ever feeling rushed. Whether you're a scratch golfer looking to fine-tune your game or someone just swinging a club for the first time, Bay View has created something special. It's proof that Hawaiʻi can take a great concept and elevate it with a setting no one else can match.

I think that can be very helpful practice tool, considering I previously had to estimate my distances with my own eyes in the past; now, nothing is up to interpretation and you'll know exactly how your shots went. Its $20/bucket, with 2 levels of covered driving range areas. Overall, been here twice and I liked practicing here. Highly recommend!

One thing I really appreciated was how quickly the pace of play moved--I never felt stuck waiting around, which made for an enjoyable experience. That said, the course conditions left a lot to be desired. The greens were very brown and didn't roll particularly well, and many of the fairways looked dry and worn out. It's understandable for a heavily played municipal course, but the maintenance definitely impacts the overall experience. If you're just looking to get out and play a fast, inexpensive round, Ala Wai gets the job done. If pristine course conditions are important to you, you may want to look elsewhere.

The divots are so close together and uneven that balls can easily ricochet back toward players. It honestly feels like an accident is waiting to happen. It costs $15 to use the range, but there are several other places at the same price point that offer much better conditions and overall quality. The staff also felt disengaged. When I was grabbing my balls and tried to say hello and thank you, it was clear they did not want to be there. If you are in Hawaii and just want to golf cheaply and skip the range, this could be an okay option. If you are looking for a better overall golf experience, Bayview Golf Course is farther away but offers much more of the Hawaii feel. That said, the views are nice, with clear sights of Diamond Head and surrounding high rises.

Also contrasting is the fact that Hawaii Prince is free to play and eat there and Oahu Country Club is for members only, and we are talking very exclusive and invite-only. I saw Barak Obama's face on the wall of members out of hundreds. I am sure I could spend hours looking at all the photos and names and recognize a few big names. The 100 yr old birthday party was hosted by my well-to-do friends, it was their mother/grandmother, so this was a special event for sure. The banquet servers were very attentive and the endless mimosas kept coming. The appetizers were the best thing - crunchy veggie spring rolls, ahi won tons, cucumber with smoked salmon and soft steamed pork bao. For our main course it was ahi steaks in creamy brown butter sauce and a scoop of white rice, or filet mignon. I had the ahi steaks and they were cooked to perfection! The entertainment was hired by my friend, a local newscaster who was a complete and utter hoot who made the entire party fun! Some of us sang very bad karaoke and I felt sorry for the baby shower next door! Our bartender around the corner was Keith, and he was stellar! I wish I had cash to tip him but I came to the Country Club empty-handed. Maybe I can convince my friend to take me back for cocktails so I can tip him very well. Cosmos were super good, liquid bliss and super smooth. The grounds are other worldly beautiful, with soaring mountains and forest in the background and the ocean facing the other way. I don't play golf but hear this course is super difficult but even if you play horribly at least you have the views to soak in. Lifestyles of the rich and famous, so awesome. I retreat back into my scratched-up car, second-hand dress and bag and Nordstrom Rack shoes a few years too old and dream of a day I can come back here again.

However, my shoulder unfortunately developed a recurring dislocation that worsened over time, and I was forced to give up golf despite my reluctance. Even so, thanks to my golf-loving friends, I still feel excited just looking at a beautiful green, even if I can't play anymore. This time, I visited Oahu Country Club for a party hosted by my lawyer's firm. The event was held in a private banquet room overlooking the lush greens, and it was a wonderful experience with delicious food, drinks, and pleasant live music. As expected, the clubhouse cuisine was refined and impressive. There was even a nigiri sushi station, which made me especially happy as a Japanese guest. The club is conveniently located about a 14-15 minute drive from my home. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that even non-golfers can become members, so I immediately started looking into it (laugh). After all, being able to enjoy great food and wine while taking in such a beautiful view sounded very appealing. Unfortunately, the membership fee comes with about six zeros in USD, and we quickly gave up the idea... That said, it definitely reignited my passion for golf. The course at Oahu Country Club is set within a forest and features significant elevation changes, making it quite challenging for beginners. However, it offers a fantastic opportunity to enjoy golf surrounded by nature. The clubhouse itself has a casual atmosphere, but there is a dress code--such as wearing collared shirts--so don't forget to check your outfit before heading in for a meal.
