I have been going to Dr. Smith at Honolulu Pain Relief for many years and love his services and the way he treats his patients! My first appointment with Honolulu Pain Relief was made because of some pain in my neck that started bothering me right after I got sandwiched between 2 other vehicles while waiting at a stoplight. I never saw the rear driver coming and I was already at a standstill when I go hit so I most likely suffered from some bad whiplash after the event. My vehicle was totaled but I luckily got out of the accident alive with just some neck pain that was causing me really bad headaches. This happened back in 2017. They were able to get me in the next day and the driver that hit me had insurance which covered all the expenses. That initial appointment went really well. Dr. Smith greeted me and went over all the procedures that he wanted to do. I was given an assessment, my XRAY was taken, I got a chiropractor adjustment, STIMs therapy session, was given a home-use STIMs machine and got a massage all within that first week. Right after my first chiropractor session, the headaches went away and I felt like new but I still had some back pain so he had me schedule a chiropractor session every 2 weeks for a couple months. I loved all my appointments with him and his team. Even after the other driver's insurance no longer covered my appointments, I used my insurance with HMSA to keep coming back regularly since I got about 6 free chiropractic sessions per year. Although his location is in town and I live further away, I still made the effort to come visit while my insurance covered. His services and the way he treats his clients is sooo worth it! I love my chiro adjustments with Dr. Smith and always ask for him although there are other Chiro doctors in his office. He cracks my back like no other chiro has done. He perfected his technique and I always look forward to feeling my spine crack from one end to the other. I get so much relief right after especially because I also lift really heavy at the gym. Overtime, Dr. Smith improved his office space with more upgraded equipment and more beneficial therapy services. Besides everything I listed earlier, he equipped his office with multiple massage chairs, a wave therapy table that stretches out your back really well, more rooms and tables for privacy while receiving STIMs therapy, a stretch therapist to work with you before or after your chiro session and improved STIMS Laser equipment. My last appointment with him was back in November 2025 and I still received the same caring and thoughtful services he's always provided. I always recommend Honolulu Pain Relief when ever anyone asks me for suggestions for a chiropractor. He's my #1 pain relief doctor. I've gone to him for soo many years, he's practically like family. The quality of care and attention to detail is something I've never experienced at a chiro office before. I'm used to the doctor coming in, cracking a few things, then leaving. Dr. Jason took my xrays, reviewed them with me, and listened to any concerns I had. Afterwards, Giovanni (chiropractic assistant) set me up on the electric stimulation pads for my lower back pain while I was in the massage chair to prep me for my adjustment. Dr. Jason then started my adjustment with some massages (and the famous cracking!). We switched back to Giovanni where he massaged me some more and finished with stretching. At the end of my appointment, Giovanni thoroughly reviewed aftercare summary, insurance copays, possible mail I might receive from my insurance company and what to do next, as well as next steps. I've been coming here for the past year and the staff is always great! Dr. Jason is always kind and making sure that everything feels okay. I still remember from my first appointment and Scott reassuring me about the center since it was my first time at the chiropractor. I went from coming around 1/2 a week due to 1/2 a month depending on activity. My pain has gone down from my chronic pain and I'm more aware of my posture to help with my alignment. Since COVID I've become a little bit of a germ conscious person, so I love seeing their cleanliness standards when it comes to all the equipment from changing out papers to wiping down equipment. Went in to get a massage. The type of care was very poor. Extremely unexperienced Staff. The attitude and the vibe was just all off. The lady in the front at the office desk, this lady with a big forehead, is lacking major communication skills that costed me money out of pocket. I go there to get a massage, I fill out the initial new patient form online, through their automated AI texting, when I actually get there, they put me into a room with no massage table in it, start asking me about pain and what was the last time I got an x-ray, other stuff regarding injuries. I said no I'm here for a massage I don't know what you're talking about. She apologized and said, it was a mistake in miscommunication, mind you they asked me for my insurance card not only during the initial new client application, but also in person. She said I have a co-pay of $17 to receive services, and the deductible, but the deductible can make a payment plan. I said okay. So they rescheduled me for a massage, I go in today, I get the massage, from this vibed out chick, who was obviously having a rough day, it felt like I was getting massaged from a from a clubsy person with two left hands. She kept pushing me, like actually pushing me, not massaging me with her hands, but the literally pushing me with her hands, causing my body to sway back and forth. I was like what the hell... Well maybe this is just a warm-up part or the loosening up of the muscles part... I'm trying to be positive about it, but nope! That was the actual massage for the whole time. And not to mention, I was asked to take my shirt off, only to have them cover me with a blanket, and massage/push on me over the blanket. How the hell is somebody supposed to get a massage with a blanket covering them from head to toe. I couldn't feel one thing, all I felt was pushing and rocking... Anyway the only thing going through my mind was" it's only 17 bucks mine as well roll with it." So she proceeds for about 40 minutes, out of the hour, at the end she goes "oh I have some water in the front waiting for you", gesturing to a tip bowl in the room. So I'm like okay, I know how it is, you want to work, you want to get tips, that's how we survive, I get it, I'm all for that. So being that it was only supposed to be $17 copay for this massage as I was told, I threw $20 anyway just to be a nice person, I get to the front and this big foreheaded lady, who does not smile at all, tells me I owe $89. Wth!??. Is that with the deductible?? The payments??. She said" oh no, that's for the massage, we don't accept the insurance for a massage." Then why did you take my insurance card twice! And if they don't do massages for insurance, you should have said that up front. Mind you, when did my first initial application she was adamant on letting me know that the payment is $17 and you have to pay a part of your deductible. I got countless texts about the deductible, the deductible, the deductible, but this time when I go... nobody says nothing until the end. I feel taken advantage of, I feel like I got ripped off,..... that peaceful, relaxing, serene, blah blah blah stuff was not there at all!! Very disappointed, very unprofessional, very unpleasant visit. And mind you, they made it a POINT to text me at least 5 times during the course of the last 2 days to confirm my appointment, not once did they say anything about the cost within the last 2 days. And now that it's over, it's been a couple hours, not one text, about how was your visit?? I hope you enjoyed yourself, if there's any changes you think we need to do and how we can do it better please let us know.... NOPE NOTHING!!! Very sad Honolulu pain relief center. So to answer the question on what they could do to improve.... They can start out by hiring staff that does not have an attitude, and seems like they don't want to be there at all. (It makes the clients feel uncomfortable, the PAYING clients feel uncomfortable when they got somebody with an attitude, not talking, and not communicating.) Secondly, if you're going to have massage services at your establishment, you need to make sure that the people who are doing the massages, actually know how to massage. And I am 100% positively sure that I am not the first person to have this experience with that massage because that was something that was totally crazy, to the point where it was almost comical. I must say that Dr. Yuri is a godsend. She makes the drive on my Saturday day-off worth the drive to town. The staff here have dedicated in making sure check in quick and you get the muscles relaxed based on your request. Always choose to go with the massage chair if you can bc it helps you get relaxed before your adjustment. During these holidays it's important to keep your health up so getting your body and connective tissues right will go a long way. Parking is available on the structure. Ground floor is the way to find visitor stalls. When you get in the lobby- take the elevator to the 16th floor. The office is at the end of the hall. They accept all kinds of insurance and do help specialize in individuals who were in accidents. They will help with maintenance as well which is my reason for going. I do more office work so my back and shoulders/neck gets a lot more tension. After leaving my body feels like it is put back into place. Dr. Yuri will also take her time with you and even help massage out any knots. She is also super nice and patient. Almost every client including myself she shows such interest in what is happening with your life. Again, do not just take my word for it but schedule an appointment yourself. There are other doctors available too if you cannot get to see Dr. Yuri. New patients can be seen on a weekday. After first consultation/adjustment you can be seen on their Saturdays. I didn't know what to expect, but almost a year on I couldn't recommend this place enough for any issues with physical pain you may be experiencing. Dr. Damian Smith is personable, explains what's going on, and how to get better. His goal is to get his patients to where he never has to see them again. I am thankful things have improved for me. Appointments never take long, but also don't feel rushed. The staff here has been great. They're attentive with other aspects of the treatment. Making appointments in person or online is a breeze, and the automated reminders are helpful. Parking is convenient, but not validated. It's $2 for less than an hour and $4 an hour after that. The clinic itself offers other services like massage, check their website. They take all the major insurance companies on the island with no hidden charges. Dr. Smith is a wonderful doctor and is also super friendly and easy to talk to. I have also seen Dr. Asaoka a couple of times and she's also great! She incorporates some massage into your appointment too, which I love when I'm especially hurting from a gig. Both take the time to listen to what has been bothering me and give helpful advice on how to take care of myself at home between adjustments. The office is super conveniently located in town with a parking structure (which is nice so you don't have to circle for street parking) and the staff (shoutout to Chey!) are always helpful and friendly. I tried a few other chiropractors on island and they don't even compare to the HNL Pain Relief Center! From the first visit where they took the time to x-ray me right then and there and explained my results and created a plan of action, I knew this was the place I needed to be!! I had a protrusion on my L5S1 vertebrae that was touching my left nerve root - significant pain and struggle to even do the most basic day to day things. Dr Doug Teraoka was amazing. I hurt my back doing Latin dancing. And I know Dr Teraoka bc he also does Latin dancing. I asked him one night at one of the Salsa events about my back and he was kind enough to take the time to listen and give me his opinion and some ideas on what I could do. So that next week I called and made an appointment with Dr Teraoka. First off he is so kind and patient and listened to me talk about my problem for a good 15 minutes, then he started his physical examination, followed by several modalities, electric stimulation, heat, ultrasound with e Stim, a device to help realign your spine finishing with a back massage with a powerful massage gun. When I left my back felt much better. I normally have difficulty sitting driving and laying down while sleeping. The night after was the best night of sitting in my car and laying down since my injury. I just wanted to write this to thank Dr Teraoka for all his hard work and kindness. Aside from my back feeling much better. Chiropractor Teraoka was so patient and kind to listen to me throughout the whole one hour visit while he was administering the different modalities we discussed my injury and I shared my thoughts and asked a multitude of questions regarding my injury and treatment. He answered each and everyone with patients and compassion. I highly recommend Chiropractor Dr Doug Teraoka if you have any back pain. In recent months, I've been struggling with pain in my lower back and sometimes my left shoulder area due to the fact that I do a lot of physical activities during the daytime and also do a lot of physical work as part of my full-time job in the afternoon/evening. The pain came and went, but there were times where it was difficult to do things in life and my very good friend and fellow California native Sophia recommended I go to Honolulu Pain Relief Center and see Dr. Yurie Asaoka for advice and treatment. I am so thankful that I finally went to the Honolulu Pain Relief Center, and Dr. Yurie is an amazing and knowledgeable chiropractor! No medicines or drugs involved, and the front desk staff is great as well. Dr. Yurie will perform a variety of stretches and help straighten me out especially when I really need it. For my very first visit, x-rays were taken of my spinal cord and she did such a wonderful job of explaining and analyzing everything and I shared where I've been hurting and what activities I do regularly. She also recommended that I come back at least once a week for 4 weeks or so. I am starting to feel better results and I haven't been feeling nearly as much pain flaring up at the worst of times, but do keep in mind that as with anything, individual results will vary and there are a variety of factors to consider. Dr. Yurie is truly a lifesaver when it comes to dealing with my lower back pain! Again, I plan on coming back regularly to get stretched and straightened out. The Honolulu Pain Relief Center accepts various health insurance plans; just check with them to see which ones they accept and what the co-pay will be for each session. I came here after a moped accident. The staff is very friendly and really liked Dr. Smith. After going for several months and feeling better, I was told I needed to see their doctor to get approved for more visits, but because I was feeling good I decided I didn't need them. Well, that's when I was called and told there was an opening and to come in (without me calling). Thought an adjustment wouldn't hurt. Dr. Smith who adjusted me so many times before and loved his technique, adjusted me and jammed my back so hard (NEVER HAS DONE THAT PRIOR) to the point I was in total shock laying on the table.. Sure enough my back is now hurting worst than it ever has!!! So sad... I would have been a client for life if I didn't realize what they are doing. I've been going there for several months and their service has been consistent. The entire staff puts in great effort to work with your schedule, messages you when a preferred time slot opens up, and are friendly and sensitive to your needs. The massage therapists are strong, attentive and effective - - you don't have to worry who you get because they are all great! Dr. Williams does my alignment and is very thorough. I hate to write this but I still remember when they used to do 60 minute massages for $50 but they have since bumped the price up to $67 and now $70 for 50 minutes. Every time I go in they always cut my massages short by 10 minutes. It's unbelievable that they can charge $20 more and give you 10 minutes less.
