Unfortunately i am saddened but frustrated to see we couldn't receive services in Wahiawā. I signed my mother up to receive the newspaper for an annual services. Two weeks later, services have yet to commence. I called multiple times, and no response from the driver. Pi'ilani, the rep. who helped me was helpful and sincere and tried. I really wish Yelp would allow me to give negative stars. Just spoke to a really rude customer service rep from Honolulu Star Advertiser regarding my paper subscription. I have had nothing but issues with this 6-months promotional subscription and really regret having purchased it to begin with. I purchased this subscription April 2018 from a vendor who had a booth set up during the Camp Erdman free family fun day. It was $20 for Friday-Sunday delivery for 6 months. However we were in the middle of escrow so I delayed the delivery start date for April 29, 2018. It took 3 calls to set up the start date because it took them a while to get my info into their system. Then it had to go through a special process because it was a special promo. Every time I called the customer service rep would have to submit a request for someone to review my account and was promised a return call. I never received any return calls. I ended up just calling them back. It wasn't a big deal since the reps were pretty nice and I know it's not their fault that it has to go through this process. We finally get the paper delivered correctly and everything was going well. Then, last night I received an email telling me that my subscription is ending on June 28, 2018. Wait a minute, that is not 6 months! I called customer service today to have them adjust my end date. That's when I encountered the rude customer service rep. I understand that sometimes we have bad days and we end up taking it out on other people, but her attitude is unacceptable. I am sick and tired of constantly calling this company to get things fixed. I do not need to deal with rude customer service reps as well. So when she put me on hold, I hung up and called back. This time I spoke to another rep who forwarded my request to extend my paid subscription to another department and was told that I would receive a return call regarding my issue. Yeah, I've heard that one before. FYI, for those of you being charged long after you've cancelled your paper, report them to the Better Business Bureau. Been a subscriber with Star Advertiser since they were The Hon. Advertiser and Star bulletin, over 40 years. I live in a condo; Star Advertiser stopped door delivery and we pick up our paper in the lobby. They used to put our name on the paper but stopped doing so and now anyone just grabs a paper for free leaving paying subscribers with no paper. Complained to customer service; nothing, still happens a lot. No one answers phone calls. Do not recommend subscribing if you live in a condo. read more

What's worse? A lukewarm iced tea, or the past two Sunday newspapers delivered on Tuesday? Reading voluminous pages of old news is NOT my thing. I get my news online from the Star-Advertiser website. Then why did I subscribe to the Sunday only newspaper, you might ask. Well for one thing, I am a real estate broker, and real estate open house ads are not usually printed on weekdays. Plus, I got a Sunday only annual subscription for $26. Wow, the Sunday paper delivered, for $0.50 total per e I subscribed in mid-August. OK, so I'm a busy guy, and forgot about the subscription since I never got my Sunday papers. Then when I reconciled my charge card statement the other day, I noticed the 8/12/19 payment for the subscription. So I called the circulation department on Monday 9/9/19 and this is the sequence of the conversation. ... HSA: There is no record of your subscription. Me: I paid. HSA: Oh, your delivery address is your PO Box. Me: Why would I get it delivered there? I provided my physical delivery address. HSA: We don't deliver to PO Boxes. Me: I did not request it delivered there. HSA: Oh, whomever initiated the order must have made a mistake. Me (thinking): So you don't deliver to PO Boxes and you have employees who are so stupid they use an address you don't deliver to? Me: Well then change it to my residence address. That is the address I had asked that it be delivered to. HSA: Oh but the problem is that we no longer have Sunday-only subscription offers so you need to subscribe to a different package. Me: I don't want the paper every day. I can read it at my second office if I want on weekdays. HSA: We have a Wed-Thu-Fri-Sun Special package you can subscribe to. Me: How much is that? HSA: It is a special price. Me: How much? HSA (talking in background with someone else about how much it costs): It is $9.95. Me: Per year? HSA: No. Me: Per week? HSA: No, per month. Me (thinking). So my special Sunday-only subscription price was $0.50 per week, so subscribing under the "Wed-Thu-Fri-Sun Special" is going to cost an additional $1.99 per week for the extra 3 days of papers which I don't want and which are not as large as the Sunday paper, so I will pay $0.66 for each additional day's paper which I don't want, can read online, or can read at the office if I really wanted to. And you call that a Special? I call it a rip-off. Me: I don't want that Special. HSA: That's all we can offer you. Me: Ok, cancel my subscription and refund my payment. HSA (after 3 seconds): Oh, I found your payment. We can start your delivery. I can credit you for the 4 papers you did not receive. Would you like a credit. Me (thinking): Duh. Me: Yes. HSA: OK, I will credit you for the 4 missed deliveries. Me: Thank you. Can I get a copy of my receipt. HSA: Yes, I will e-mail it to you. Me: OK. So I get my receipt and it credited me for 2 issues, so my subscription expires at the end of August, 2020. And the next day, the Sunday papers for 2 September Sundays are in my driveway. This negative review is for customer service. I intended to only have a one month subscription and called to confirm my cancellation before my month ended. I found that I was still charged for another month. When I disputed the bill, I requested to have my account looked into and that I'd be contacted with the results. Not once did they follow up with me despite calling them on three separate occasions. There was a lot of back and forth but no resolve. They once offered to cut my bill in half, though I explained that my issue is not the cost, but the principle. Very dissatisfied with my experience. read more

After over 40 years as a subscriber we finally had to cancel due to the never ending rising subscription price for daily delivery, shrinking size of the paper, diminishing quality of the articles, inability to negotiate a lower price for loyal long time clients, & StarAdvertisers apparent focus on attracting new readers with much lower subscription rates while leaving long time subscribers to supplement the rates of new clients. After we cancelled on 10/31/23, we did nor receive a paper on 11/1 or 11/2, or have access to digital service as one would expect after cancellation. Then all of a sudden we started receiving delivery & digital service again on 11/3. What is going on with this company???? The Honolulu Star-Advertiser is a shell of what either of the two daily newspapers were. Its as far as I know, the only Honolulu online paper to charge people to read some of their online articles. The Star Bulletin's purchase of the Honolulu Advertiser was the beginning of the end of a decent print daily newspaper. The lack of competition led to what we have now. I used to be able to read full Baseball stats daily or near daily. Now you can't find stats at all. The paper has gotten thinner with less content every year. No Saturday paper now even. Quality and quantity has hit rock bottom. read more

Your delivery agent for Oneula Place in Ewa Beach has been trespassing onto our property for more then a year now. I've tried to inform your agent on many occasions that he was trespassing and should find an alternate route. His windows are down and he just looks at me while driving away. Your agent continues to violate our space. I've called on several occasion to the front desk and have been hung up on. I was always professional when speaking with them. No disrespect at all. This review is only for the delivery service and the "special" the run that requires paper delivery if you want the cheap online subscription. First off the delivery guys throws the Sunday paper, breaks my Happy Halloween lawn display and no offer of compensation of any kind when I call customer service :( I didn't make a big deal about it but it's not just the $15 cost of the lights, it's having to go back to Target to find another ghost light set. If they're out, what do I do - go with a missing ghost formation? Ughs. Anyway I've also been unhappy with the somewhat biased high school sports coverage. Without naming names, it's obvious who SA favors with coverage and placement of news stories. In spite of that, I've reluctantly renewed subscription. My 87 yr old mother did not receive her morning newspaper today. I normally get it for her when I arrive every morning at 9:30 or 10 am because she doesn't walk too well and we don't want her walking outside to get the newspaper. Called their customer service but was told there was nothing they could do except credit her account or deliver it the next day because we called after 9:30 am. This is unacceptably horrible customer service. It is not her fault she didn't receive her newspaper. It is their fault that they did not perform a service that we paid them to do as per our subscription to the StarAdvertiser. Bought the Sunday paper today (9/18) and was charged $3 for a regular sized paper (no inserts at all). Is inflation so bad that they no longer put inserts/advertising in the Sunday paper and charge you extra just because it's Sunday?!! Won't be buying newspapers from them again, especially Sundays. I don't subscribe because papers were delivered unreadable (wet from rain and being left outside). I asked for my delivered papers to be bagged 3 X and they didn't do it so I canceled my subscription. Now they pull this stunt? Nope no more Star Advertiser for me. This is an updated review. After seeing my original review on Yelp, a member of the Star Advertiser staff reached out to me and requested he be given a chance to correct the poor delivery service we received for the first few months of our subscription. I'm happy to report that ever since Joe Cooper got involved, the paper has been delivered every day with no issues, so I've updated my review to 4 stars and hope the service continues to be good going forward. Had to submit a review after reading review from Rob S. I think we have the same delivery folks! I agree zero stars would be appropriate. I've had the same problems for 20+ years in Mililani. They cannot take the time to throw the paper under the eave so it doesn't get wet, so I regularly call for a replacement for wet papers. Our paper is regularly thrown under the car on the driveway, in the planter, in the front yard, under the gutter, etc., etc. And its true they do drive-by deliveries. You can hear the car in the morning going by fast as they fly the papers on people's driveways. I have requested delivery under the eave multiple times but to no avail. About 20 years ago, a neighbor made the guy who threw the paper on her roof, get his own ladder to retrieve the paper himself (he asked to use hers). That made me laugh. My brothers delivered the paper as adolescents and they always threw it on the porch at the front door under the eave. Times sure have changed. Star Advertiser does not care to or keep records of their delivery folks and since they're the only major local newspaper, there is no incentive to do better. But in time they will probably die out with the service they provide and because each generation reads less than the previous one. It's a bummer but I do search for other news sources and am waiting for a local alternative. read more

After many complaints, many complaints, on getting my newspaper delivered to me, I am writing this customer complaint about service. I can see why Star-Advertiser has a 2 star rating. I'm giving them less than 1 star rating for the amount of complaints that I have given them. This morning, my Sunday paper, customer satisfaction pissed me off. I will not name the guy that brought the paper to me, but he made it my fault said I didn't get the paper. That look on his face, said it all. If looks alone was enough, I would be dead. I hope he has a better day. This was not his fault, but customer service need to be done, by people who loves their job. OK! I think it is time that someone over fifty tell you what he thinks about The Honolulu Star * Advertiser. I have been a "read a newspaper every single day" person for most of my life. But things are very different now because I'm over fifty and I think that the Honolulu Star * Advertiser has been trying to separate themselves from seniors. First of all, let me explain something that you might not know. For some reason, as you get older little things start irritating you more and more. Wives and gf's of old men that read newspapers know what I mean. I mean, try talking to your "old yeller" and see if is says "I love you" or "you are so beautiful today" when he is reading the paper. The conversation usually starts with "Damn it!" The next thing you will hear is "Will you shut up until after I finish reading the paper!" ....or something like that. Anyway, the Honolulu Star * Advertiser is really irritating to me. 1. I am used to paragraphs that are justified, flush left and right. Flush left, ragged right is just so uncool to me. I hate to say this; but the old Honolulu Advertiser would NEVER flush left, ragged right. Do not shame the "Advertiser" name. If you are going to flush left, ragged right; call yourself the "Bulletin". 2. In the olden days the weather section was on page 2 or 3. Now it is way in the back. What is more important than the weather on a bad news day? Move sunny, partly cloudy and rain more to the front. 3. OK! I admit my eye sight is not 20-20 anymore but can anyone read the Consolidated Theatres listing without a magnifying glass? I cannot make out the titles or the times. And try reading the thing at night with the 60W light bulb in your bedroom. The words look like lines. 4. Who is picking the comics anyway? I would be satisfied with Hagar the Horrible, Garfield, Blondie, Dennis the Menace, Beetle Bailey. Ask any senior who Pearls Before Swine, or Frizz or Luann are and you will know what I mean. Comics are suppose to be funny or have some relevant message. I'm missing the funny and messages in your selections. 5. Why is the obituaries in Section A or B and not Section D? I mean when I see a picture of a friend or relative that died up there in the front; it kind of ruins the rest of the read. Seniors do still have emotions you know. Keep this way in the back so that I can enjoy the front portion of the paper. 6. I'm not asking for braille but can't you increase the size of the fonts in the classified and legal notices. It's the magnifying glass thing again. The type is so small I'm surfing Craigslist and reading the Star * Advertiser on-line. Be warned!! One day you will loose my $2.00 on Sunday's. 7. What is the point of having the headlines so big if the general text is so small? I'm beginning to just speed read the headlines cause the text is so hard to read; it strains my eyes. Can't you reduce the size of the pictures and make the columns wider? My eyes tire from moving left to right and up to down so quickly. You never considered that, right? 8. There was a time when the stock market took up two pages. Who is picking the listed stocks anyway? And with all the abbreviations I'm beginning to think the listing is the owner of the Star * Advertiser's personal stock portfolio. This page seems strictly for him. 9. The ads seem to be the main focus of the paper now. Peel offs on the front page. Big and wide ads throughout the sections. I understand their value but I read the paper for the content and not the ads. 10. It is a good thing I know my way around the computer because if it was your goal for this senior to read your on-line paper for free: Mission accomplished! I only buy a hard copy of the Honolulu Star * Advertiser on Friday's and Sunday's now. The rest of the days I am enjoying all the features of reading your paper on-line. Well I guess I have to apologize. I'm saving $3.75/week which is $195.00/year now. As you get older you penny pinch where you can. No offense but I miss the Honolulu Advertiser. I go to KHON website to get the news for free. The Star Advertiser charges for its online stories that are not as detailed and some times don't even make sense. The paper itself is skinny and not even good enough for a bum to reuse. They need to seriously revamp and find stories worth reading. I miss the old Honolulu Advertiser with a whole section of interesting stories like old cases or significant people of Hawaii. Star Advertiser needs to step up on their quality and marketing game. The guests at the hotel will complain if they don't receive it the first day, but after reading the paper won't complain if it is not their the next day. I was very dissappointed when they started charging online for stories, however it was a blessing in disguise when I learned about all the other great places to visit like the local news station sites. read more

STOP CALLING MY HOME...I cancelled my subscription because the quality of your paper is so bad. If I need to read your paper I will grab my neighbors paper off his driveway - he has the past 3 or 4 days still there getting rained on. I'll just throw it back there after the 5 minutes it takes to get through it. The price is way too much to read about One-sided reporting, the Horoscope, the small column of local crime or traffic accidents, the Longs Ad, and the Sports Section - which btw is written by 8th graders. Read a story about the top HS football game from the nite before and it starts with the deciding 3rd quarter action to the play right before the half and then the final 4th quarter TD - but oh - the losing team did lead the game in the first quarter on these plays - what is going on??!! Who edits this mess??!! The UH game loss is covered by 4 different stories on the first, middle, and back pages of the section - I am confused. There is more front page stories about the Homeless, the Prison, and people on Welfare. If a bank gets robbed - front page - if the bad guy gets caught - back page in some small column. Why was a story like DOWN and OUT in Waikiki front page news ?? A Homeless story again? We got it already! We have a homeless problem! In the coming weeks - let's see -we'll read about how bad prison Inmates have it, how crossing the street without looking for on-coming CARS is hazardous, how many people on welfare are limited to buying Heineken and Steaks when they go grocery shopping, how sitting in traffic is way better that building a rail system, and how we should support the same people who protest every other development project in this State now that they want to build high-raise buildings near Water Front park!! I just don't get it anymore. Oh - one more thing - Dave Shapiro - stop writing - you are so off base with that column you write - I feel sorry for you - do you actually live in Hawaii and go out in public?? read more

I wish I could give a zero!! This isn't the first time I have had trouble with this company. First, they failed to stop delivering newspapers to me even after I called multiple times to tell them that I had cancelled and the papers were still coming. I told them to stop and they didn't. Then they charge me for the months they didn't stop delivering! I had to argue for a while over the phone telling them I refuse to pay for those months because I was trying to cancel and they wouldn't let me! So I finally get to cancel and then they continue to call a few times a week. They always have some sort of great deal for you. I kept saying no... Finally I decided alright let's try just the Sunday papers. Auto payments are only $4 or so a month. That was my mistake. I should have told them to bill me. They do it once and I think it should be ok. But then as I was looking over my bank statement, I notice the next auto payment was for $52!! I quickly called and the guy tells me that someone changed it to the annual payment and took out $52 WITHOUT my authorization! So the guy tells me he will reverse it and I should see it back in my account in just a few days. I also told him I want all my card information deleted and I want to cancel my subscription. It has been 5 with no refund so I call back and a different lady tells me it takes 2 weeks. She claims all card refunds take 2 weeks and if I want more information, she is going to have to find out with another department and she will call me back. She still has not called back. Never ever do business with star advertiser. They will do anything to take your money so don't ever give them your card information. Better yet, just stay away!!! EDIT: Now they are saying 2-4 weeks for my refund!! When I got upset, the lady snickered. I am appalled at this company's total disregard for customer service. read more

Sadly, being an observer on the island of Oahu for three years now I have been very fascinated in many things socially that take place here. For one, people are kind of stuck in their ways - for lack of a better description things done here are safe. It is clear that there are some things here that make Oahu a true paradise (gorgeous land), but others that make is cringe worthy. I am sad to say the Honolulu Star-Advertiser is poorly written, too safe, and frankly not worth paying for. So I am biased, but I would prefer not to pay $5.00 for a NYT at Safeway. OH, and the online version is worse! You can only read 1 article. LOL - forcing readers that might like your publication whisk away to other sources (one less customer that might take your paper - now you have to wait 5-10 months until that individual goes to a store or fair that your street team are advertising a fantastic deal). Think more strategically HSA - you might be the only show in town but thanks to the internet I hope the people of this community realize that it is unacceptable in all capacities. read more

I haven't purchased a subscription for over three years, but this company is calling me after I have previously asked this company to not call me to solicit a subscription. Furthermore, when I asked the caller: "Is this a solicitation call?", she (her name was Elaine) didn't answer the question directly until I asked her another time. She finally answered (with an attempt at more explanation), but I told her I have requested they do not call and wanted to be sure she documented it. However, she was trying say she had another call so I couldn't. This is a rude company that doesn't follow the law (and yes I am on the do not call registry and reported them). read more

I cancelled my subscription early May, and everyday I get a call from 5502445. I emailed Customer Service and complained about getting 4 calls a day from them. He said it was probably Sales calling in the morning. So he said he'll take my number off the listing. But that same day, Customer Service called asking me to subscribe again, they have an awesome deal!! I ignore all the calls but they keep calling. They are trying to get me to subscribe again and I told the lady, I have said NO 8 times and you guys still call and bug me it's frickin annoying, so NO I don't want to subscribe. read more
