Over twenty um years ago my engagement ring was stolen, I thought I was okay with only my wedding ring all these years but my husband surprised me with a diamond ring from Zales, he told me the center was a full 1 carat and the side stones were 1/2 a carat total. Well we got a call from Zales stating we had the wrong certificate for my ring. When we went into Zales and got the correct certificate they didn't say anything to us and I just thought it was a change in the cert #. Well it turned out that my ring had the center stone 3/4 and the side stones were 3/4, total same but BS! Tried to resolve the problem with Zales but only for a 1/4 more carats of diamond we were informed it would cost anywhere from $1500.00 on up depending on quality, what BS!!! I was walking pass the Honolulu Trading Co. and saw a ring very simular to mine so I went in. I met Gerald there and he showed me the ring and also told me there's alot of other loose diamonds he had available that I would love. I tried to go back to Zales to resolve the ring problem but was given the same options, later one of the side diamonds fell out, Zales replaced it since it was insured but to me it was a sign to return the ring. I went home and talked to my husband, I told him that although he experience good service from Zales what they originally told him about the ring he bought wasn't true and they didn't want to resolve the issue that was satisfactory in my eyes. I told him that I am so grateful and appreciative that he bought me such a beautiful ring but Zales ripped him off, I wanted to return the ring and get a better one from the Honolulu Trading Co. It took me three tries to return the ring to Zales and I got a beautiful 1.22 carat solitaire diamond from the Honolulu Trading Co. for the same price my husband paid at Zales! Love the jewelry and vintage items in this shop. The owner will bargain a bit with you over prices, which is a bonus. My only complaint? The saleswoman was totally disengaged while I was searching for a pendant with a Tahitian pearl attached. She was looking out the window, wouldn't make eye contact, etc. I find this irritating when I'm getting ready to drop over $300.00 for an item. Those sales sign her paycheck, after all. I sold Tahitian pearl jewelry at an upscale shop for a year. Our whole focus was being educated about pearls and sales. Any down time was spent reading about Tahitian pearls or how to improve our sales. Whatever happened to a little common courtesy? I didn't expect her to name her first born after me, just make a little effort at being personable. Just letting the owner know that this salesperson probably costs him sales. Found "THE RING" at the Honolulu Trading Company..... it only took us a few dozen visits of snooping their cases of used, antique and vintage jewelry until one day a perfect oval cut sapphire with two triangle diamonds nested on either sides of it screamed out at me. I knew I wanted something different, not a ordinary diamond engagement ring but wasn't exactly sure what I would fall in love with.. until that sunny day the sapphire caught the light and sparkled like the cool blue ocean. I still get butterflies looking at my perfection. The staff at the Honolulu Trading Company is friendly and helpful, even after many visits of "just looking" and not puchasing.. they were always so welcoming. And when we finally found "THE RING".. they resized it free of charge, ready to pick up in just 3 hours. My friend and I decided to bring in our gold here to see how much we could get for it. The staff were so nice and accommodating, especially the woman (sorry I forgot her name) who helped us. My friend recvd a little less than a $1000 on her gold pieces, some of which they detached the pearls for her bc she wanted to keep it. They even took her silver Tiffany jewelry. I had some small gold pieces that got me $200 but I was happy. And when they said that a bracelet I brought in was fake, they said it in a way as to not embarrass me. Yes, though, I was a little disappointed. Overall great experience. Didn't have a chance to look at the jewelry but did noticed some beautiful pearls. read more

Went in to sell some American Eagles "$50" Gold Coins. These gold coins contain 1 ounce of gold in them. They offered to buy our coin for 73% of the NY Gold Spot price. This is the absolute rip-off gold pricing we've found while shopping around! And in a rinky-dink store in a so-so location to boot. We eventually sold our gold coins at Hawaiian Island Stamp and Coin on Bishop Street for 98.25% of the London Gold Spot price. This may not seem all that big a deal to you, but on March 10, 2012, this is a difference of $433 that Hawaiian Island paid more than Mr. Ripoff Honolulu Trading Company. Note: Hawaiian Island Stamp and Coins deals in gold coins, not gold scrap. UPDATE June 2014: Au contraire dear OWNER/YELP ADVERTISER. You never told us about selling instead to a coin dealer for a higher price instead of taking your lower price. YOU JUST LIED. Everybody, do you think the owner would say this to someone who walked in? Really? If I recall, I felt you to be a slimy wheeler dealer. That was my impression of you at the time. I knew there was a gold buyer in the building so I stopped by with my old jewelry that's been sitting in a drawer for the past ten years. When I first walked into this shop, I was disarmed by a young and beautiful woman, who smiled and asked if I needed help. I said I have some things to sell, and she guided me to John, I believe. Now when you look at these two people, you already know your not gonna have problems. They both had a casual, professional look about them and they were both knowledgeable, friendly and most of all, honest. I knew when he told me " why don't you keep that one because its a nice piece and you should give it to your kids or someone special". If that wasn't enough, he also advised me to take another piece somewhere else because you probably will get more for it because we don't sell much of those here. The way he said it was genuine concern for me, and I took his advice. Prices were fair, no waiting 3 days or a week for an appointment.
