This place was pretty disappointing. Based on the reviews, we were expecting much better. I would not recommend this place, when there are tons of better options on the island, including just a short trip south to Wailua. Our entire family of four got different things in our one stop at Honu Shave Ice and all were a bit disappointing. The ice quality was mediocre, the ice cream was barely there, and two of our shave ices had almost nonexistent syrup, to the point where it was just clumped ice chunks. I suspect that they don't train there staff well, given that our experience was pretty different than the reviews. Here are the shave ice rankings from our recent trip to the island (June 2026): Kauai Shave Ice Rankings 2026 1. (Tied) North Shore Bowls in Kilauea - very enjoyable and creative pre-designed flavor combos, nice fluffy ice, good ice cream, flavorful syrups 1. (Tied) Wailua Shave Ice - very enjoyable and creative pre-designed flavor combos, delicious toppings, very good ice texture and ice cream; too light on the syrup for one of our two trips 3. Wishing Well in Hanalei - good fluffy ice and really flavorful natural syrups; downside is it's very crowded (always!) and pretty basic 4. JoJo's in Hanalei - this is a standard shave ice place; ice was a bit compact and icy, but the syrup was plentiful (maybe too much, if you can believe that, for our one visit) and the ice cream was both generous and good 5. Hee Fat in Kapaa - great flavors but the syrup was light coverage, and the ice cream seemed gummy/freezer burned, ice was decent texture; used to be our favorite in Kauai in years past, but it hasn't kept up with other places and maybe the quality has gone down hill 6. The shave ice was great, and there were a variety of flavors. I loved how they had natural flavor options. They were quick and it was cool how you could see them make it. It was also nice being able to sit in the shade. I had the regular Rainbow shave ice. The regular sizes are good for one or two people, depending on the amount you want. read more

Honu Shave Ice was great! It's the cutest little spot to enjoy a refreshing treat! There were a ton a flavors and flavor combinations to choose from along with some specials! You can have ice cream on the bottom (vanilla, coconut, or macadamia nut) and condensed milk on top if you choose. A line can form quickly so get there right at opening if you can. The owner here was so nice and helpful! We had brought a shelter dog to visit and were able to get him a bone broth shaved ice! We also got some scoops of ice cream for the humans and it was such a yummy treat for a hot day. This little stand for shaved ice is nothing but amazing! The staff was very friendly, the flavors are house made and the shaved ice was delicious. My favorite part was the macadamia nut ice cream, not just vanilla like a lot of other places. I ordered the Thai tea special which made me a little nervous because I've only had fruit flavors before and it did not disappoint! Tasted just like a Thai tea but frozen! What a creative array of combinations to choose from! Or, you can make up your own, but the BEST one is Thai Tea! The syrup is delicious over the pillowy ice and the coconut cream drizzle takes it to the next level. I added the haupia ice cream - so yummy!!! My only regret is that I got a small. A great place for shaved ice. Yes there's a shaved ice cart almost everywhere you look but what stood out about this place was not only the larger size portions but also the unique flavors that cater to unique taste profiles. I'm not a fan of fake food colorings and flavors so I tried a less traditional flavor. Green tea. It was delicious. It was slightly sweet and had a slight green tea flavor which mixed well with the condensed milk and ice. The ice cream on the bottom is an absolute must. I opted for coconut and it was good. Prefer macadamia though. Unique to Hawaii. Service: lady working the counter that day was amazing. It was her recommendation to try the green tea and I'm glad I did. While visiting Kauai I decided to try and find the best snow cone on the island. And this place was it. We got there at a great time with no line and the owner talked to my boyfriend and I, and educated me that it is in fact not a snow cone haha but shave ice. It was absolutely amazing! We tried two incredible snow cones: lychee and Thai tea topped with coconut cream, as well as a mix of lychee, passion fruit, and blue raspberry. The Thai tea was freshly brewed and perfectly complemented by the creamy coconut and sweet lychee. The second one was refreshing and fruity, a perfect treat for a hot day! This place is nestled be the ABC store and a gift shop. The wife and kids all had shaved ices, and I had a scoop of Ice cream. My wife and kids stated that this was the best shaved ice they ever had.
