Jess Loves Black Pot Beach (Black Sesame)

After another adventure-filled day exploring Kauai on our honeymoon, we stopped by Familee to recharge. Honestly, I went in with high expectations (I grew up in the food industry and have had my fair share of Korean shave ice ( called "bingsu" in Korean), so I wasn't sure it could live up to it. Atmosphere was welcoming. The menu had so many delicious options that I had a hard time choosing, but I finally went with the Jess Loves Black Pot Beach (black sesame). The moment I saw it was shaved "milk"ice (most places do shaved ice), I just knew it was going to be good and the first bite didn't disappoint at all. It genuinely felt like I was back in Korea eating bingsu. So nostalgic, in the best way. My husband loved it just as much! We also got to meet and talk to the owners, Tim and Jess, and they're just the sweetest couple. Hearing their story was so inspiring, and we're rooting for their business to keep thriving. We're definitely going back before we head home. Finding this place was such a sweet surprise on our trip!

Tucked away in Kapa'a, this bingsu spot was the perfect treat after a hot beach day. The menu boasts size small and large options, small being pictured here. The flavors blend local flare and Asian influence, including matcha and ube, which we ordered. We will definitely be back on our next trip and were happy to have something a little different than our normal shave ice routine! Definitely don't be in a rush when you get here. There's lots of space to sit outside the storefront, but it does take about 5 min to make each dessert...so don't wait for your friends to enjoy if you get yours first!

It was yummy and delicious. Price was very reasonable and portion was good, too. Service was excellent and ambiance was good as well. I will definitely come back again.

We came here because we love Bingsoo and also needed something to cool us down from the wonderful island humidity. Bingsoo was our answer. Hidden in the back of this tiny strip mall, we ordered the large Ube snow. I really enjoyed the toasted coconut, which gave it a more nutty flavor than coconut; however, the ube flavor and condensed milk could have been pumped up a bit more. We also ordered the regular-sized mango snow after eating the Ube snow. Both items were picture perfect and cooled us down. APPRECIATE: Cool naming conventions that matched the theme of the store name. All too clever, which combined Korean, Hawaiian, and American culture into one lump sum.

Oh, so light and delicious! Familee is our favorite bingsu shop in Hawaii. Each bingsu is made with care by the owners. The sweet milk ice is shaven into the finest snowflakes and topped delicately with organic syrups and powders. Our favorites are the Umma's Caffeine Fix (coffee) and Nick's Honu World (green tea). If you love kinako, get the Appa's Injeolmi. We always get the Na Palee (mango) when it is available in the spring and summer.

The most delicious (and beautiful) shave ice we have ever had! Friendly and professional service. Highly recommend!

I really REALLY liked this Shave Ice. The ice was so finely shaved, the toppings tasted natural and top quality, and the size was plenty. Definitely worth it. Each one we ordered was great! Just know they are tucked in the back of the colored little shops and don't worry, there is plenty of parking and restroom near too.

Definitely a hidden gem. It is towards the back so follow the sign. My favorite shave ice place! I love matcha so Nick's Honu World was perfect. The ice is so fluffy and delicious. The mochi on the side is a must.

Some of the best Korean bing soo/shave ice ever had. Flavors are delicious and the ice texture is perfection. You do have to eat it immediately though as it will melt! They have NO vegan options here though as the ice is made from whole milk.

Best bingsoo! This must be how it tastes to have a snow cloud melt in your mouth. Familee Korean Shave Ice is lightly sweetened with condensed milk and topped thoughtfully with toasted black sesame powder that added a delightfully savory nuttiness contrasting beautifully with the homemade red beans which added hints of sweetness and texture, and the strawberries added a wonderful freshness that rounded out the light as air treat. Location is in the back a bit off the street but well worth the trek.

Great service and delicious Korean-style shave ice! A little hard to find as you can't see the building from the street or even when you initially enter the shops out front. Look for the larger yellow colored elevated building behind the beach rentals business. Menus rotate during the week, I think you can find the schedule on their insta

FamiLee Korean shave ice was a nice little find. It is located in Kapaa across from the Kauai Federal Credit Union (old Otsuka's building). There is a little shopping area there made up of small individual buildings painted different colors. If you follow the wooden walkway and take the first left following it back behind the little shopping building you will come to a larger yellow building. This is FamiLee Korean shave ice (or bingsu in Korean). This version of shave ice is one of my absolute favorites. This stands out from traditional Hawaiian shave ice for 3 very distinct reasons, 1. The toppings, syrups, flavorings are made fresh, not store bought syrups. 2. The ice itself is sweetened and flavored with milk/cream giving it a taste even without added flavorings. 3. The way the ice is shaved makes it much finer and fluffier than Hawaiian shave ice. This is a small family run business and service is always friendly. It is our favorite shave ice on the island with Wailua shave ice in close second. Would definitely recommend giving it a try!

Wow. Amazing. The ingredients are incredibly fresh. I almost didn't stop for this but now I can't wait to go back.

The portion was generous, the shave ice had the perfect texture, and they definitely did not skimp on the syrup or the scoop of ice cream at the bottom. By the time we left, the line had grown quite a bit, but after trying it myself, I can honestly say it is worth the wait. All in all, I would have Wailua again, would try something else - maybe one with liliko'i and pineapple.

Its right off a main road and you cannot miss it. Parking lot was a bit small, but there was plenty of parking. AMBIANCE: When I went there was plenty of seating. A bit dead, but I also did go pretty early. There were a bunch of decor of older American pop culture like Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, etc. But also Hawaiian themed decor (obviously). SERVICE: You gotta walk up to the front to order. I was approached almost immediately as soon as I walked up to the menu on the screen. The girl working was super friendly and welcoming. I made my order and she gave me a pager for when my food was ready. FOOD: I ordered the chili pepper chicken, which was recommended from the girl at the counter. My friend ordered the ahi katsu. The chili pepper chicken was good! It was crispy and extremely flavorful. It was slightly too salty for my taste, but luckily the rice does help balance it out. Some of the crispness was sacrificed for the sauce, but it was overall still pretty crispy. I loved that they used boneless chicken thigh. I was expecting bones or lots of breading but it actually had a perfect ratio. I wasn't much a fan of the mac salad. It was like a mix of mac and potato salad, but more like a potato salad. I'm not big on potato salad, so that makes sense. My friend's ahi katsu was alright in my opinion. The sauce that's on it was good and enjoyed all the flavors. The tuna was just a bit overcooked to my liking, but idk how else one would make a katsu without overlooking it too much. Maybe bread the fish and freeze it before frying? Idk man, I'm not a chef lol but the tuna would definitely be better if it was less cooked. OVERALL: Honestly, I would still come here again. I still enjoyed the meal and the service was pretty quick. Both items were both worth trying. All the flavors were there and the little things I didn't like were just personal preferences. Its a great place to pick up a lunch plate and enjoy it at the beach.
