With Hoover Restaurant Week in full swing , my mom and me decided to give Hoover Steaks & Wines a try. I'm so glad that we did. We received amazing service and had a great overall experience. Our server, Eron did a great job with answering any questions we had. He took our drink and food orders quickly. I really enjoyed the restaurant week special steak flight $30. The three different cuts were ny strip, ribeye & sirloin. I opted for medium rare as the temperature- steak was juicy and prepared just right. My mom had a pastrami sandwich & house chips!!! She enjoyed her meal & had some leftovers. Those house chips were delicious! This isn't a huge place but definitely comfortable. You can purchase cuts of meats, sides, wines to go. I really like that you can pick your cook of meat and they will prepare it for you in house. You pay the per lb price plus $15, which isn't bad. I came here for lunch one day with my friends and fellow Yelp elites Roxanne S. and Wendy J. They had a lot of menu options. We ordered a steak flight and shared everything here family style. It was fun to try so much of what they had to offer. We started with the wine down flatbread. We all agreed the balsamic glaze was a bit overpowering. For our steak, we ordered the medium steak flight which was cut in little pieces and perfect to share. I really liked the chimichurri sauce and cowboy butter they came with too. The cowboy butter was a game changer! I can't stop thinking about it. For our sides, we each picked a side which ended up being macaroni & cheese, corn elote, and my choice in the tallow roasted potatoes. I will say the mac & cheese and corn elote were not too memorable for me. And the tallow roasted potatoes were not very flavorful to me and what I was envisioning. Absolutely not. Everything I had was gross. So stinking expensive for gross food. It's like they're trying too hard on some dishes and to where it's gross and then not trying enough on others. Service was terrible. Called in earlier in the day about if we needed a reservation and they were unfriendly on the phone. Then we got there and it was just a crap experience for the $400+ total the 4 of us spent. When we walked up, there was an employee that came up to us awkwardly like we didn't belong there it was weird. Service sucked. Everything took so long to come out, food came out at different times. Appetizers took forever, wine was gross, a worker was carrying clean and washed cups stacked 3 feet tall pressed up against his clothes, ears and neck and placed them out ready to be served. - I understand gross things happen in a restaurant that we could never imagine but out in the dining room where people are eating to visualize that is tacky. Make sure to use a straw out of your cup. At 9:28 there were 4 tables left, us, 1 couple at the bar & 2 outside. We were finishing our glass of wine and a lady came up to us and said " by the way, we did close 30 minutes ago". I would never return here ever again, and I would never recommend it Chairs are so hard and uncomfy. Cheap plastic cups to drink out of. Such a joke for the price We moved here two months ago and everywhere I go has been incredible food, I don't research anything when we go places because I have trusted the Birmingham area that much, unfortunately, that ends now Expensive food trying to be upscale and trendy. Skip it Our table ordered -Charcuterie board for 4- $35. Smallest charcuterie board and biggest waste of money. Whatever jelly they use on it is absolutely disgusting and I think it's the same thing they put on the flatbread. I wouldn't pay $5 for this charcuterie board -Pimento cheese/ tasted like it came out of a Walmart container, half the bread pieces were way too hard, and then some were soft at the bottom -ribeye & mashed potatoes, no flavor Whatever this wine eater or whatever they called this flatbread was. We heard great things about Hoover Steaks and Wines, so our family decided to try it out. We had five people. There was one large table inside, and a few smaller ones inside and more tables outside. The shop as a whole is smaller. To me, this is more of a wine, butcher shop but they do serve food. You can also buy preprepared meals they you can heat up at home. Our party of five decided to eat in. We really enjoyed our meals. I ordered the Wine Down flatbread which was really good. It was a 9" flatbread that came with prosciutto, grilled chicken, peach pepper jelly, goat cheese, mint, pepper drops, caramelized red onions, and balsamic glaze. My sons ordered the Philly cheese steak sandwich and the Pastrami sandwich. They said both were absolutely deliciou. My son's girlfriend ordered a wine flight and really enjoyed it. read more

Had the Big Buc Burger, cooler medium and chips, which was pretty good. Bacon was cooked just right. Joy, our server was great, she had an awesome attitude and consistently wore a smile on her face. Vibes were chill inside, it was relatively quiet, despite having a bigger group sitting beside us. People came to purchase wine or food. The wait staff checked them out and waited tables as well. We made a great choice in deciding to drop in here. We arrived around 6pm on a Thursday, and it was a little busy. We sat at the bar and received menus right away. It took a little while for them to ask about our drink order (remember we were at the bar so they were filling orders for everyone), but that gave us time to look over the menu. The drink menu has a wide selection of beverages!! Wine, wine, and more wine!! The bottles around the room added to the overall ambiance! Red wines, white wines, flights and tasting nights...we will definitely go back soon to try other wines and items off the food menu. Every item we had was delicious!! In addition to the wine flights, they have a steak flight...AMAZING!!! And remember I said it took them a little while to take our ordered? Can't believe there are not more reviews. Another hidden gem across from the Hoover Met. It's tucked away in a large outdoor strip/shopping mall right in middle of a residential neighborhood. I believe it is family owned and the owner lives in the adjacent neighborhood. In fact, many of nearby residents just drive their golf carts to dine there. They offer a calendar or events where they feature wine tasting. Outdoor seating is spacious and available. Indoor decor was minimal but available. They are also a "fresh" market with large open cases where their fresh meats and steaks are displayed to be purchased. In fact, you can pick out your cut of meat and tell them how you want it cooked. Or if you choose a meat menu item, you will rest easy knowing that it came right out of their display case. Their menu items are short and simple. Apps include charcuterie boards, spinach & artichoke dip and crab cakes. They offer sandwiches and flatbreads like the Finley Philly and The Met Meatball Madness. There's a couple of salads and their sides include potato salad, twice baked potato, veggies and their famous mac & cheese. There's sliders, wings and burgers. Brooke tried a steak with their chimichurri sauce and she raved about it. I tried the Hoover Burger... a juicy Wagyu beef blend patty grilled to perfection, topped with white cheddar, crisp lettuce, a slice of tomato and house aioli sauce on a toasted brioche bun. The presentation was immaculate. The taste was spot on. Yom Yom Yom. I also tried their mashed potato and it hit the spot even without gravy! Pretty good experience. Mind you, know what this is. A combination butcher and restaurant operating in a retail location. So, as a result, the dining experience itself is a little barebones in terms of indoor seating. We tried sitting out on the patio at first, but we asked to be relocated due to sudden, unexpected windy conditions. A good selection of beers and wine. Not expansive, but perfectly sufficient. The service was cheerful and prompt. The steaks themselves were very good, especially given the price point. I thought a flight of red wines for $21 and a flight of steaks for $28 was reasonable. Add the four bucks for a twice-baked potato, and you enjoy a nice steak dinner without breaking the bank. Because we were meeting friends out on their side of town, it's probably not where we'd go as a destination, but I would recommend it for a more casual night out. Well done. read more

This restaurant was super cute! First time here! We came on a Friday night and were able to find a spot easily. The menu sounded good, I ended up going with the pastrami and it was delicious! HSW is such a vibe! Surrounded by all these fabulous Whites, Reds, and Rosé bottles of wine, with the opportunity to sample without purchasing, was an awesome experience, coupled with a curated food list featuring an abundance of great selections, which was perfect for a Thursday night. Being transparent, our service started slowly, as if the staff were still trying to figure out which stations they would cover, but once our server greeted us, we had an awesome night. However, what I appreciated most about the night was that the owner observed how my experience began! He also comped me and my friend's drink. This kind gesture lets me know he is intentional about providing the best experience for customers when they visit their establishment. My coworkers and I went to Hoover Steaks & Wines for a Christmas luncheon. We made reservations and I'm glad we did because the restaurant is somewhat on the smaller side. I'm usually pretty good with looking at pics and the menu when I'm trying a new restaurant, but I didn't. The restaurant is really more of a meat/wine store, but a restaurant at the same time. I loved the idea that you can buy your own meat and take it home to cook or the restaurant could cook it for you for a fee. But when I saw the name, I thought it would be more of a high-end type of restaurant. Just FYI, it isn't. As soon as we entered, we were greeted and seated. Our waitress was very nice and patient being that it was all of our first time going, because we really had to look over the menu a few times. I ordered the crab cakes which came with a side of tossed greens, which was more so like a small salad. The crab cakes were delicious. They definitely had more crab than filling. I did have a few broken pieces of shell in the crab cakes, but other than that, they were a nice size and seasoned well. I also ordered a side salad with grilled chicken. I ordered the side salad knowing my crab cakes came with tossed greens, but I didn't realize the tossed greens would be more like a side salad at the time. The chicken on the side salad wasn't as seasoned as I preferred it to be. So the side salad was just ok. They also have a variety of sandwiches that my coworkers tried and they all said they were pretty good. All in all, decent visit to Hoover Steaks & Wine. Big fan of this new gem across from the Hoover Met--they have awesome gourmet sandwiches premium meats, and some of the best scratch-made mac and cheese in Birmingham. Pear salad was amazing! So-called pastrami was not pastrami, but just corned beef. Heads up, sandwich is a reuben. Not New York style at all. Wines here are outstanding, though, and the steak flight shows their strengths off very well! Burgers are really good, but the chef doesn't seem to know the difference between rare and well done.
