Hop Bo Chinese Restaurant ~ 2 145 Palm Bay Rd NE # 109, West Melbourne, FL 32904. "The Valve" Here we are with another spot on the boarders of Palm Bay, technically West Melbourne, FL. Felt like deja vu pulling up to this place. Just like every other Chinese takeout place scattered across these badlands. Just yesterday I can remember being a kid kicking and screaming in one of these dingy lit places with the hazy tinted menus that look like something Wish would sell today. Outdated to put it nicely. As I was trying to google what Hop Bo meant in English I walked inside what seemed to be a traditional Chinese takeout joint. Nothing different going on here at first glance, or second, or third. They happen to have a few tables and chairs to sit down at so I grabbed a menu and started scouring what appeared to be a math exam with all the numbered choices. I ordered an orange chicken combination platter(egg roll and fried rice included), beef teriyaki on a stick, and crab rangoon. Now as I was waiting for my food, I started observing my surroundings in detail. Really taking it all in in there. The table tops were clean, but besides that, place didn't look like it'd been deep cleaned in awhile. Giant mirror with dust all over it. Dead flies scattered all over the ground in the corners. (Shown in pictures) Walls scuffed up and the look as if it's been 12 different establishments before this one. They opened in 2002 according to the pictures hanging on their wall. Also they're trying to flex some awards from 2007 and 2008 as shown in pictures lol. Which is prly the last time those flies were swept up, but who knows. Didn't bother with the bathroom I had seen enough. Couple of young kids running around in the kitchen. One came up to me to say hi and lingered directly behind me for a bit. A young girl helping answering the phone and a girl about my age also taking phone orders in front. Now once my food was ready they put all items in a small box as if you just left Sam's Club with a few things. Not the worst idea on that part. But once I sat down trying to get pictures I realized I had no plates to start pulling things out so I had to improvise at that point. Also tried to buy a bottle of water after the fact and they wouldn't do any Apple Pay or debit card transactions under 5 dollars which is what lead me to leaving and eating this one at home. Orange chicken was just like every other overly breaded orange chicken you find almost anywhere. Dark meat overpowered by orange breading. The flavor on the orange wasn't bad, but I could just feel the sodium hitting my blood stream within a few bites. The fried rice wasn't anything special either. The beef teriyaki didn't smell good to me, chewed on a corner for a minute and threw the rest away. Egg roll also didn't smell good. I'm not a big fan of this type of food, sodium city one could say. The best part of the meal was actually the crab rangoons. Which is the only thing I kept eating. I did notice they had a diet section and vegetarian section on their menu. They got a few points for that part. Anyways nothing crazy here. The flies and sodium kind of did it for me, so I'm gonna go drink roughly 8 green juices and take my blood pressure medication now and just end this one here. The different kind of Chinese takeout. The service was good and easy to get in and out of. The menu items are typical takeout Chinese restaurant. What was a little bit different about their food was the quality. The rice was a little more dry than what one might expect. In no way what I consider this offensive. It lacked the normal gobs of Grease you expect from take out Chinese restaurant. The chicken I got was a pretty good cut of chicken it wasn't chewy at all. The flavor was prominent and strong. Overall the food was really good and not greasy at all. My only complaint is the portion size. Most Chinese takeout restaurants give you more food than you could eat. After eating my combination take out platter I still oddly felt hungry. I know that I had enough calories because of the rice but the meal itself was portioned a bit on the small side. Which is actually probably pretty great for most of us overweight Americans. read more

This restaurant has been in business for years. The quality of the food has changed with each change in their kitchen staff. Just had a very good experience with Hop Bo West Melbourne. We ordered Moo Goo Gai Pan, Tofu w/ Mixed Vegetables, and Beef w/ Black Bean Sauce (spicy as my sister likes it) for lunch. Everything was very fresh and the veggies were tender crisp, not raw and not overcooked. Prices are very reasonable. Was told it would be ready in 10 minutes and I was there within 15 and our order was ready. Our last two Chinese restaurants went out of business - this is now our go-to! read more

I liked this place. The guy that took my order was very helpful, friendly and spoke clear English. We ordered the beef with broccoli, chicken with green beans, house fried rice and Singapore noodles. Everything was delicious!! Fresh which is always something I look for in Chinese food. Location is great because I needed to go to the grocery store to pick a couple of things while my food was being cooked. This used to be my favorite place to get Chinese food. Mainly because the egg rolls can't be beat, not now. I just got my order tonight and decided to order 6 extra to freeze for later. Wish I hadn't they were very mushy. I accepted the fact that I waited an extra 35 minutes in the small store along with 15 other people to get my order. I even tipped them. So I called to asked about the egg rolls hoping it was just a bad night. Nope. They changed the sauce to a white sauce versus a red sauce. No more eggs rolls for me. It's okay....just okay. Take out is the only option here. Order was supposed to be ready in 30 minutes - it took an hour and 5 minutes. Mo-Shu pork has been a favorite. It was good but the pancakes that come with it were not the ones they usually had. Not a change for good. Teriyaki chicken was dry. Spring rolls were the highlight of the meal. Service is the main issue. Some of the others who were waiting tried to cancel their order but were assured it was almost done - took an additional 10 minutes. We used to order for pickup for years but yesterday we were disappointed! They said food was going to be ready in 35-40 min, I arrived in 40 min and waited at the restaurant for 45min. The trays of sauces and fortune cookies were empty. The food was not hot, it did not feel it was freshly cooked, the beef in the beef with broccoli was hard! I decided to write a review of this place since I didn't feel that the other reviews were doing it justice. Now, I'm not going to tell you that the food is the best in town, or even that Hop Bo has the best Asian food in town. It isn't even the best Chinese food that this little slice of paradise has to offer, but I will tell you that it is good, honest, and dependable Chinese food. The wife and I have been picking up Hop Bo at least once a month for some time now. It is very close by to our house, and so far, they haven't given us any reason to look elsewhere. It does look a little generic, entering the stripmall storefront...and the menu board with the 70s stock photos of a glistening beef with broccoli ain't doing this place any favors either. But once you look past the outward appearance, you can see an authentic chinese kitchen staffed by competent cooks, preparing all the food fresh, cooked to order, in a ridiculous amount of time. I live about 7 minutes away, leave right after calling in my order, and every time it is bagged up, ready-to-go, before I arrive. Onto the food.... We always, always get the Wonton soup. Admitedly, it is almost certainly made with some kind of concentrated chicken flavoring, as it is super-naturally yellow, yet it is never too salty, which seems to have become the standard. It is a clean and simple broth with more than enough tasty, tender pork wontons and, of course, the requisite scallions. The egg rolls are okay, but nothing to write home about. On the entree side, the wife loves their General Tso's Chicken, and I am a loyal fan of the moo shu pork, but we have both had less than desirable dishes on occasion. Most notably, the lo mein, and fried rice were both somewhat lacking in the flavor department. We have also found that some of dishes can be a little heavy on the veggies, and therefore, a little light on the protein. I debated giving Hop Bo 4 stars, but settled on 3 because of the disappointments that we have had in the past. However, it is a place that we will continue to frequent thanks to the excellent soup, decent entrees (once you find something you like,) and dependable, friendly, fast service. read more

We have been ordering from this takeout restaurant for almost 10 years. Being from New York City, we fully understand that this is Melbourne and we cannot compare the Chinese food in this area to what we are used to. That being said, Hop Bo has it's hit and miss dishes. Some are very good while others are just ok. The fried rice is pretty bad but we have not found any Chinese restaurants in town that know how to make authentic fried rice. Unitl moving to Melbourne we had never seen fried rice that contained peas and carrots - that is just plain wrong. The closest we have come to NY style fried rice is Thai Fried Rice, in particular at Asian Gourmet which is a Vietnamese restaurant on Eau Gallie/US1. Back to Hop Bo, most of the dishes we have tried that we felt are very good are: General Tso's Chicken (excellent) , Szechuan Chicken (not bad but has a tendency to be a little greasy), Moo Shu Pork (very good), Pork Egg Foo Young (excellent), Wonton Soup (excellent), steamed and friend dumplings are excellent as well. Their chicken and broccoli and chicken and black bean sauce is also good. They give you a very large portion at a good value. We always have leftovers the next day and my husband is a big eater. We have never had a problem like some other reviewers about getting a wrong order but we are not the type of people that would bring it back either. We figure, it would be an opportunity to try something new. If you are on the fence because of some bad reviews, you should just give it a try and decide for yourself. Everyone's taste is different. Out of all the chinese restaurants in town this is the one that we and our friends always order from. I feel they are the best Chinese restaurant you can find in the area (including Red Ginger on Wickham which we did not feel was as good and was overpriced). read more

I had to wait for nearly 45 minutes after ordering my food. I see people coming and going to pick up food ( it's Friday after work ) so I thought perhaps it would be worth the wait. *** !!! WRONG !!! *** I ordered a large container of " Hot and Sour " soup but what I got was "SWEET " and hot soup. I called and complained ( first time ever calling to complain about my food anywhere ) and threw a large container in the garbage disposal. The shrimp toast was full of oil and burnt, the batter on the sweet and sour pork was still uncooked and doughy. Never again will I ever step in that place again. The people that goes there must not know what good Chinese food is. I can say that without malice because I am Asian ... I had to give at least a star but it should be 1/2 a star. read more

I just didn't feel like making dinner after getting back from a road trip, so I decided to try this place out. I was a little leery after my last two attempts at going to new eateries ended in disappointment, but fortunately the third time was the charm. Although they loaded my shrimp with cashew nuts with celery like most takeout places do, I was pleased to find that there was more than the paltry amount of shrimp as some places might offer (though I could have wished for more, I love shrimp, but for the price you can't ask for too much) and the sauce was very tasty. Not only that but the cashew nuts were actually crunchy and not all soft like they'd been stewing in sauce all day. Let's start off by saying that you get exactly what you would expect from Hop Bo. They deliver a consistent product of decent flavor, have good service and make your order quickly once order. It is a fast food American Chinese food place, and the menu reeks of what America has come to believe is true Chinese food. If you are looking for true authentic Chinese food, I would suggest to you that you look elsewhere. Stay away. First off I tried ordering online through chinesemenu. Even though they an online website, this website isn't linked to their store so the order did nothing even though the menu matches the store description exactly. Now after placing a phone order and being quoted a 40 minute wait time, it's now been over 90 minutes with no end in sight. I don't have a problem with a place being too busy, they just need to be up front and let people know the truth. I have seen many people walk in now and be told their order will be ready in 5 to 10 minutes, only to come back several times and be told the same. I'm not a huge fan of Chinese cuisine but I do enjoy their egg rolls, spring rolls, and sticky white rice. My husband loves their sweet and sour chicken (especially since they serve it without pineapple which is he not a fan of). Hours of operation are broad and it is always very clean inside.
